Dear Friends,

As you read this letter, our Lenten journey is underway. Many of you came to one of the Ash Wednesday Masses to celebrate God’s Word and Eucharist – and were marked with burnt palm that we use as ashes. Likely, the priest, deacon or lay minister said these or similar words, “turn from sin and believe the Good News” or “remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Each seems to have its own intent, but both are reality checks on our life journey.

Last week I wrote a bit about the journey of those through the RCIA process – Lent is a time of purification and enlightenment. So, did you get your ashes? Did you come to Stations of the Cross? Maybe a daily Mass? Prayer group? Visit the sick or bring food for the hungry? Wonderful! This is an ideal time to use our rich traditions to anchor ourselves in the life of the church. Keep it up, it makes the world a better place.

Still, what are you giving up? What am I giving up? For me, I used to give up different foods or activities – only returning to them once Lent was done. Oh ... those potato chips are so tempting. You know, as I watched the abhorrent anti-Semitic desecration of a Jewish cemetery in the Philadelphia area, and the many threats toward our sisters and brothers of Judaism and Islam, I wonder if I gave up something with a new ap-proach might make a difference. Instead of potato chips – how about judgement? Instead of a television show – how about racial, religious or ethnic biases? Instead of sleeping late – how about close mindedness? And so much more. Let us work towards an Easter season that raises people to new life – and it will happen if we take the mark of Ash Wednesday with a renewed sense of purpose.

Al leer esta carta, nuestro viaje de Cuaresma estará en marcha. Muchos de ustedes vinieron a una de las Misas del Miércoles de Ceniza para celebrar la Palabra de Dios y la Eucaristía - y fueron marcados con palma quemada que usamos como cenizas. Ya sabes, mientras observaba la abominable profanación antisemítica de un cementerio judío en el área de Filadel-fia y las muchas amenazas a nuestras hermanas y hermanos del judaísmo y el islam, me pregunto si renuncié a algo con un nuevo enfoque que podría marcar la diferencia . En lugar de papas fritas - ¿qué tal el juicio? En lugar de un

programa de televisión - ¿qué hay de prejuicios raciales, religiosos o étnicos? En lugar de dormir hasta tarde, ¿qué hay de teniendo la mente cerrada? Y mucho más. Trabajemos hacia una temporada de Pascua que eleve a la gente a una nueva vida - y sucederá si tomamos la marca de Miércoles de Ceniza con un renovado sentido de propósito.

Lenten Regulations

Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended. Good Friday: This is a day of fast and abstinence from meat. There is a limit of one full meal on this day for all between the ag-es of 18 and 59 inclusive. Days of Abstinence: (All Fridays in Lent) All who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat. Easter Duty Obligation: After they have received their First Holy Communion, Catholics are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept should be fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are also bound to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year, but this is not limited to the Lenten/Easter season.

Please join us for our penitential soup dinner following the 6 p.m. Mass on Thursdays during Lent. This week the soup will be provided by Elaine Rhinehart’s Prayer Group and St. Michael’s Regional School parents from St. Bridget. Bring your own bread and share in the fellowship.

Making money and spending money becomes the center of their life and they actually become a slave to money. The solution –live Steward-ship by becoming more generous. 40-Hours Eucharistic Adoration Again this year, our parish will be conducting a 40-Hour Eucharistic Adoration beginning on Wednesday, March 15 and ending on Friday, March 17. On Wednesday, March 15, we will begin the devotions with Mass at 6:00 PM, followed by a procession around the church and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The 40 Hours will con-clude on Friday, March 17 with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction following

the 8:00 AM Mass. We will need at least two adorers to be present before the Blessed Sacrament during the entire 40 hours. Please prayer-fully consider signing up for one or more of the 40 hours. There will be a particular need for adorers during the late-night hours from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM on Wednesday and Thurs-day. This is a great opportunity to spend quiet time listening to the voice of God as we journey through the Lenten season. ADORACIÓN EUCARÍSTICA DE 40 HORAS Una vez más este año, nuestra parroquia llevará a cabo una Adoración Eucarística de 40 Horas que comen-zará el miércoles 15 de marzo y terminará el viernes 17 de marzo.

El miércoles, 15 de marzo, comenzaremos las de-vociones con misa a las 6:00 PM, seguido de una proce-sión alrededor de la iglesia y exposición del Santísimo Sa-cramento. Las 40 Horas concluirán el viernes 17 de marzo con una procesión del Santísimo Sacramento y la Bendi-ción después de la Misa de las 8:00 AM.

Necesitamos que al menos dos adoradores estén presentes ante el Santísimo durante las 40 horas. Por fa-vor considere la posibilidad de inscribirse para una o más de las 40 horas. Habrá una necesidad particular de adora-dores durante las horas nocturnas de 10:00 PM a 6:00 AM el miércoles y el jueves.

REUNION DE MINISTERIOS Habrá una tarde de oración presentada por el Padre Mi-

chael Field el martes 14 de marzo a las 7 pm en la Iglesia. También estaremos discutiendo el nuevo sistema de pro-gramación de software que comenzaremos a usar para el próximo trimestre. Es por Rotunda Software y se llama Mi-

nistry Scheduler Pro. Muchas parroquias de la diócesis están utilizando actualmente este sistema. Debe facilitar

las cosas para todos. También se tomará algún tiempo pa-ra revisar los procedimientos de los ministros eucarísticos. Un par de días antes de la tarde de oración, recibirás un
