Through our Catholic Faith, GROWING IN MIND, HEART, AND SPIRIT TO BECOME LEADERS IN THE WORLD

On Saturday, March 18th, sixteen Saint Barnabas students competed at Roncalli High School in

the 3rd annual South Deanery STEM Competition. This event invites students in grades 5th-8th to

come together for a day of problem solving, teamwork, and engineering. The students worked

in teams of four to build a prototype that would be able to accomplish a variety of objectives.

The student had no idea what their challenges would be before the event, and had to collabo-

rate quickly to construct their designs. Here is what a few of our students had to say about their

experience.

Describe the task you were given.

“My team and I were asked to build a vehicle that uses the potential energy of a mousetrap to propel it

forward.” – Andrew Galt, 7th grade

“Our team was asked to build a catapult. It had to be able to stand on its own, and shoot a ping pong ball

onto a target to earn points. It also had to shoot the ping pong ball the farthest distance.” – Ava Nelson,

6th grade

What was the most exciting part of the day?

“When our team was announced and how happy we were for that moment.” - Naomi (Frank) Himes 6th

grade

“The most exciting part of the day was when we were finishing our prototypes. Everyone was hurrying to

make their catapult and go test it one final time.” - Gracie Sipe, 6th grade

What was your favorite part of the day?

“My favorite part was earning points and how exciting it was. We could hear other teams’ scores and we

didn’t know what we would get.” – Naomi (Frank) Himes 6th grade

“My favorite part of the day was when we saw that our “car” moved a positive amount of feet. I felt

proud of myself and the team.” – Andrew Galt, 7th grader

What was it like to interact with students from other Catholic Schools?

“To interact with other schools was very fun because we were all competing, but at the end of the day, it

was great to share STEM with our South Deanery community.” – Ava Nelson, 6th grader

“Interacting with other Catholic school students was exciting and interesting. Hearing about the similari-

ties and differences between our schools made me very curious as to what it was like at their schools.” –

Whitney Meinerding, 6th grader

“I thought it was good to interact with other students because you might not ever meet them in your ca-

reer as a student. Most of the students there liked to do the same things as me, and when we go to high

school, we might meet up with them there.” – Annie Bauman, 6th grader

What would you say to someone interested in competing in next year’s competition?

“The STEM competition is very fun and it boosts your self-esteem. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to do it. There are

lots of exciting moments and no matter what, you’re happy when you leave.” – Luke Skartvedt, 6th grade

We are so proud of how well these students represented our school! A big congratulation goes out to all of them!
