NEW! Memorial Day – Mass at Normal Time

The church office will be closed on Monday, May 30 for Memorial Day. Daily Mass will be celebrated at 8:30am as usual. Let us all take time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service for our beloved nation.

God Bless America

NEW! Altar Sodality

The Ladies Altar Sodality will have a lunch meeting on Wednesday, June 1 at Olive Garden (Eastwood location) at 11:30am. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend. For more info, please call Mary Jean Romano at 205-856-0499.

NEW! Paving Completed

Paving of the side parking lot was completed this past Monday; striping was done on Tuesday. Please make note of the new handicapped spots on the side of the rectory garage and also in front of the patio area. Work is due to take place next week on installing the fencing along the top of the retaining wall, the railing going down the stairs, additional drainage lines in the new flower beds at the bottom, and also several landscaping projects.

NEW! Josh’s Ordination – Congratulations

We extend heartfelt congratulations to Deacon Josh Altonji, ordained this weekend (Saturday, May 28 in Huntsville)! Deacon Josh will be going to Mexico for the month of June to continue studying Spanish. We wish him a good summer as he begins sacred ordained ministry in the Church! And let us continue to pray for him as he approaches priesthood ordination a year from now!

Welcome, Daniel Sessions!

Daniel official joins us this Sunday, May 29, and will be with us until the end of June. From there he will go to St. Paul’s for a couple of weeks before going to World Youth Day in Poland! We welcome Daniel to the St. Barnabas family. I encourage all to invite him over for a meal or otherwise make him feel welcome and supported. Daniel is a Birmingham native and a graduate of John Carroll Catholic High School. He will be going to continue his seminary studies in Washington, DC this fall.

NEW! “I Love America” Patriotic Concert

Everyone is invited to a fun, patriotic birthday celebration for our nation! St. Aloysius Church will host its 4th Annual “I Love America” concert on Friday, June 24 at 7:00pm. Combined choirs will lead the audience in many popular patriotic songs. Joining the choir will be the Waylighters Gospel Quartet and Voices of the South Barbershop Chorus. Come see a tribute to our armed forces as the Lake View American Legion Post 2011 presents the Colors and Service Flags from each branch of the military and the P.O.W. There is no charge for this entertaining and inspiring evening. St. Aloysius Church is located at 751 Academy Drive in Bessemer.

Work Completed in Rectory

In preparation for Father George’s arrival new carpet has been laid in the guest room and upstairs hallway of the rectory. Later in June, new carpet will be laid in the pastor’s rooms also. This replaces carpet that is over 20 years old, stretched, stained, discolored, and worn out. In addition, with the painting of the guest room and hallway two weeks ago, most of the rectory’s paintable walls (i.e., those that are not wallpapered) have now been refreshed. Much work remains to be done in the rectory, but we have at least made a dent in the list for now!

Dante’s Divine Comedy Study

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has recommended that all Catholics read Dante’s Divine Comedy. We are happy to offer a DVD study on the trilogy this summer at Guadalupe Hall on the grounds of EWTN in Irondale. It is a Catholic Courses study taught by Prof. Anthony Esolen of Providence College. We will begin a four-part study of the first book, Inferno, on Thursday, May 19 at 7:00pm. For full details see http://EpiphanyStudies.blogspot.com or call Mark McCoy at 205-661-3693. You may also email him at [email protected].

Dominican Nuns Vocation Retreat

The cloistered Dominican nuns in Marbury, Alabama are holding a Vocation Retreat on the weekend of June 3-5 for young women aged 16 through 27. Retreatants will learn about the nuns’ contemplative life of praise and intercession at the heart of the Dominican Order for the salvation of souls, including the nuns’ special devotion to Eucharistic Adoration and Perpetual Rosary. To learn more go to http://www.stjudemonastery.org.

REMINDER! Warm Weather Dress: Modesty

Please be mindful of modesty when dressing for church services. One’s attire should not distract from another’s prayer. Appropriate apparel should not be tight-fitting or revealing. Our attention should be focused towards the Lord. Thank you for your attention to this issue!

CATHOLIC VOCABULARY

This Week’s Term: SCRUPLE SPOON

A “scruple spoon” is a very small ladle-like spoon that is used to place only a drop of water in the chalice when the wine and water are mixed at the Offertory during Holy Mass. The scruple spoon’s use is very uncommon today, though it is still seen in some places. The name suggests that it was used because of scrupulosity on the part of the priest about how much water he put in the wine. But, in fact, it simply made it easier to put only a small amount of water in (as the rubrics require) and not have to worry about over-pouring. In fact, if the priest were to dilute the wine too much, it would no longer be considered true wine and thus the consecration would not happen! At a time when the Precious Blood was almost never distributed to the people, such that the priest only put a very small amount of wine in the chalice just for himself, using the scruple spoon was a very practical way of doing things right and well.

NEW! First Saturday Mass

Mass will be offered at 8:30am on Saturday, June 4.

NEW! Thank You, Frederick! Welcome, Kenny!

Frederick Pollman, our Sunday organist for nearly a year now, has taken a position at St. Stephen’s University Chapel in Birmingham and so will no longer be playing for us on Sundays and directing our choir rehearsals on Monday nights. We thank him for his talented service!

We also welcome Kenny (Kenneth) Sutton, who is taking Frederick’s place. Kenny is an accomplished musician who has played for us on several occasions already. We are happy to welcome him to St. Barnabas on a stable basis for our Sunday liturgies and choir!

NEW! Ordinations to the Priesthood

On Sat., June 4 at 11:00am at the Cathedral of St. Paul, two of our diocesan seminarians will be ordained to the priesthood: Deacon Jim Handerhan and Deacon Wyman Vintson. All are invited to attend! Please pray for Deacons Jim and Wyman as they make the final spiritual preparations for this wonderful new chapter of their vocational journey!

NEW! Father Jerabek Time Away

Father Jerabek will travel to see his family in New Hampshire, including a recently-born niece, June 6-13. During that time all schedules will remain the same and Masses will be covered by Monsignor O’Connor and the Franciscans. Please pray for safe travel!
