Angel Tree 2019 Recap Through your generosity, we helped twenty‐four St. Barnabas fam‐ilies have a merry Christmas. This was a great example of steward‐ship; it took me, talent, and treasure to make it a success. There were many people that helped with registra on, gi prepara on, and of course those who took cards and shopped for the families. On behalf of the parish gi recipients and the Angel Tree Commi ee we thank you very much for your help and your loving care of our parish families.

Rosary for Peace Every Second Sunday You are welcome to join us for a Rosary for Peace at 10:00 am on the second Sunday of each month. We meet in the church by the statue of Mary next to the organ. St. Barnabas Catholic Church offers prayers and condolences to... Joanne Palmeri, family and loved ones of Frank Palmeri who died December 29, 2019. Frank was well known in the community as the owner/operator of Frank’s Roman Pizza, much loved restau‐rants in the Asheville area. A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 4 here at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Chalk it up to… One of the customs associated with the new year on Epiph‐any weekend is to mark the top of your front door with chalk (blessed, if possible). This year the inscrip on would be "20+C+M+B+20". The first and last segments, 20 and 20 indicate the year. The three middle consonants are the ini‐

als of the tradi onal names of the three Wise Men: Cas‐par, Melchior, and Balthasar. By doing this and reci ng a prayer, it is said that all who cross the marked threshold will enjoy Christ's goodness and blessing in the new year.

LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Na vity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long‐awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revela on that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all na ons—Jews, Gen les, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it a racts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The le er to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gen les as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON (1774‐1821)

T hough her liturgical designa on is “Religious,”

Elizabeth Seton, her feast‐day prayer reminds

us, was also wife, mother, educator,

foundress. Born into a wealthy Episcopalian family, Eliza‐

beth married William Seton, whose un mely death in

Italy where the young family sought healing for Wil‐

liam’s tuberculosis, le her, at twenty‐nine, a widow

with five children. Inspired by the faith and charity of

the Italian family with whom they stayed, Elizabeth em‐

braced Catholicism despite her family’s disowning her

and ceasing financial support. This woman of many firsts

(and several voca ons!) opened the first free Catholic

school, beginning the American Catholic educa onal

system, and founded the first American religious com‐

munity for women, the Sisters of Charity. The tuberculo‐

sis that claimed her husband took also her oldest and

youngest daughters and, finally, at just forty‐seven, Eliz‐

abeth herself. Another first: in 1975 she was canonized

the first na ve‐born American saint. Once asked to sum‐

marize her spirituality, she replied: “Faith li s the stag‐

gering soul on one side, hope supports it on the other,

la venida de Jesús como el rey y Mesías tan esperado por el pueblo judío, y en la Epifanía celebramos la revelación de Jesús como el Salvador y la Luz de las naciones; es de‐cir, de judíos, gen les y de todos los pueblos. La estrella brilla con tanto fulgor que atrae a los ma‐gos que vienen de países distantes para adorar a Jesús. No son judíos, y sin embargo se ven atraídos al que es la Luz del Mundo. Combined Mission Collec on ‐ Weekend of January 19, 2020 Collec on for the Church in La n America "Share Your Faith" is the theme for the collec on for the Church in La n America. Your gi helps fellow Catholics ‐ who are rich in spirit but lacking in material resources ‐ to par cipate more fully in the life of the Church. Throughout La n America and the Caribbean, the Catholic Church is an effec ve sign of faith and hope. Generous contribu ons made by United States Catholics to the annual collec on for the Church in La n America provide support for nearly 300 pastoral projects annually and serve as "concrete tes mony of the preferen al love for the poor which the Church in America nur‐tures." (Saint John Paul II, Ecclesia in America, no. 33) Collec on to Aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe “Restore the Church, Build the Future” is the theme for the Collec on for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Genera ons of young Catholics are once again learning about the roots of their faith and receiving the sacraments a er 75 years of militant atheis c Communism and some of the most devasta ng religious repression in the history of the Church. The Collec on to Aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe nurtures the growth of religious educa on, scholarships, training for seminarians, assistance to the elderly without pensions, and food for children. Catholic Home Missions Appeal “Strengthening the Church at Home” is the theme of the Catholic Home Mission Appeal. The annual appeal provides help for poor and isolated Catholics who find it difficult to receive the sacraments or to par cipate in parish religious educa on programs be‐cause of long distances, few resources, and a lack of priests. Here in the United States 85 dioceses have benefited from Catholic Home Missions funding for evangeliza on, outreach, religious educa on, campus ministry, seminarian educa on, diaconal for‐ma on, lay ministry training, and Hispanic ministries. Approximately 45% of the dioceses in the United States are simply unable to provide the basic pastoral ministries of word, wor‐ship, and service for their people without funding from the Catholic Home Missions Appeal.

United States Mission Collec on Formerly the Black and Indian Missions, this collec on supports evangeliza on programs in almost every Archdiocese and Diocese in the United States.

Within the Diocese of Charlo e, some of the evangeliza on projects par ally funded by The United States Mission Collec on in‐clude Campus Ministry at Thea House in Greensboro and workshops and special programs sponsored by the diocesan office of Afri‐can American Affairs Ministry. Su donación ayuda a los demás católicos, que son ricos en espíritu pero carecen de recursos materiales, para par cipar más plenamente en la vida de la Iglesia. En toda América La na y el Caribe, la Iglesia Católica es un signo efec vo de fe y esperanza. 14th Annual MARCH FOR LIFE Charlo e! Jan. 10, 2020 The day will begin with a Mass for the Unborn at 9:00am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church at 6828 Old Reid Rd. Charlo e, NC 28210.
