PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED

Elizabeth Pires Anna A. Albergo

5th Sunday of Lent

“Then Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.’” To the woman caught in adultery, Jesus was literally a savior. She was about to suffer the death penalty, according to the law of Moses, but the Lord preserved her life. He did not pretend she was inno-cent or excuse her behavior. His protection was not the result of anything the woman did or said to earn His favor. Rather, His freely bestowed mercy became an opportunity for her conver-sion. He saved her and set her free—not only from the self-righteous scribes and Pharisees—but from her own destructive behavior. The woman’s physical life was spared, and if she chose to follow Jesus’ instruction to abandon sin, her spiritual life was also saved as a result of this dramatic encounter. We also have access to this freedom. When He died on the cross for us, Jesus became our savior too. Instead of con-demning us, He set us free from the power of sin. But like the woman in the Gospel, we have a choice to make. Jesus’ sacri-fice is sufficient to remove the “death penalty” for us, but we are the ones who decide whether or not we will “sin anymore.” We decide whether we will be slaves to selfishness, lust, and envy or whether we will pursue a life of generosity, self-control, and peace. Jesus does everything he can for us, short of taking our will captive. We, finally, have to decide: will I follow the path of Jesus, who has saved me, by resolving to sin no more? Or will I depart from my savior, and return to the same old self destructive patterns? The holy season of Lent is made to assist us in our decision to repent and to change for the better. There is no better time than now to sincerely resolve to begin anew.

THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY: EXAMINING YOUR CONSCIENCE

The spiritual exercise of examining our con-science is something that every Christian should do on a regular basis. The habit of reviewing our actions or be-haviors each day to see how our life is, or is not, in ac-cord with the way God asks us to live can be a wonderful opportunity for spiritual discernment and growth.

Of course, as the Rite of Penance reminds us, "the inner exarnination of heart and the outward accusa-tion must be made in the light of God's mercy." (6) In other words, the way for us to begin to examine our con-science and to uncover the areas of sin in our life that need to be healed by God's forgiveness is to start with God's love. God has created each and every one of us, redeemed us through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus, and has given us all that we need to live a good and moral life. In the light of God's goodness and mercy, we should never be afraid to be brutally honest with ourselves about what our sins are.

When going to the of Penance, it is important to spend time examining our conscience before we go to Confession. It's not helpful to think about our sins for the first time only while we are waiting on line, for example. If examining our conscience is a regular part of our prayer life, this preparation for the sacrament will come easy. In examining our conscience, we should look at our relationships both with God and with other people. We should ask ourselves if we are really growing to be a bet-ter, more loving, and less self-centered person, and if we are growing closer to God. We should pray to the Holy Spirit for the Spirit's guidance to see those areas of our life where sin has damaged our relationship with God and with others.

Sometimes we will discover that our sins are quite specific and have to do with concrete actions; other times we will discover that our sinfulness is related to a general pattern of behavior or attitude. To help us in discerning what our sins are, the Ten Commandments are a great place to start, as are the Beatitudes, as found in Matthew 5:1-12, for example. There are also many guides to ex-amining one's conscience that can be found in spiritual reading and in other Catholic resources. For example, the Bishops of the United States have provided some guides for the examination of conscience their website: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and- wor-ship/sacraments-and sacramentals/penance/examinations-of-conscience.cfm

Remember that not all sin is equally serious. Sin might be serious enough such that I have broken off my relationship with God (mortal sin), or it might be less seri-ous and only damage my relationship with God (venial sin). Whichever it is, we should never hesitate to confess all our sins openly.

Our celebration of Sacrament of Penance will be all the more fruitful and beneficial to the degree we have done the work ahead of time in examining our con-science.

One of the most important members of our family of faith are our priests — the Fathers who are there for us day in and day out throughout our lives. Ordained in June of 2015, Fr. Sean Magaldi grew up in Williston Park where he attended Mass with his family at Saint Aidan Parish. It was in his junior year at Chaminade High School that he first started thinking about studying to be a priest.

"The priesthood was something that I started thinking about in high school; throughout col-lege it was in the back of my mind but I wasn't ready to take the next step to enter the semi-nary. After graduating from college, I started working as a Catholic Campus Minister at Hofstra University. Working with the stu-dents at Hofstra helped me realize that God was calling me to be a priest and I needed to enter the seminary." Father Magaldi currently serves as an Associate Pastor at St. Patrick in Smithtown where he shared his goals as a priest. "My goal is to get as many people to heaven as possible — in-cluding myself— to journey with the people of our Diocese in growing closer to Christ."

Active members share the faith through a variety of face-to-face ministries and spiritual works of mercy. These include teaching religion, bringing Communion to the sick and home-bound, praying with the elderly at nursing homes, praying outside abortion mills, and much more. The prayers of the Blessed Mother and our Auxiliary members support our wit-ness and efforts. We also enjoy retreats, days of recollection, and social interaction with other local Legion of Mary groups several times a year. You will learn more about the Catholic faith, help save souls, build friendships, grow in holiness, and help prepare yourself for judgment day. For more information, please call Marie at 631-682-3007.

On Good Friday, our parish will take up the annual Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. Each day, the news reminds us of the violence and instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a community that struggles to remain in the land of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. Please help support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to the Good Friday Collection. This Pontifical Collection allows the Franciscans and oth-ers to continue caring for Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s people in the Holy Land. Please be generous.

Celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy with a great new app from Our Sunday Visitor! 365 Days to Mercy is designed to accompany you on your spiritual journey during the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The app includes daily reflections on mercy, everyday Scripture reflections, Pope Francis’ tweets, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Novena, and lots more. Go to your app store and search “365 Days to Mercy” and install it today!

Family Liturgy

“THE JUBILEE OF MERCY IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER IN DEPTH INTO THE MYSTERY OF GOD’S GOODNESS AND LOVE. IN THIS LENTEN TIME, THE CHURCH INVITES US TO GET TO KNOW BETTER THE LORD JESUS, AND TO LIVE FAITH IN A WAY COHERENT WITH A LIFESTYLE THAT EXPRESSES THE FATHER’S MERCY. MY LIFE, MY ATTITUDE, MY WAY OF GOING ABOUT THE WORLD MUST BE A CON-CRETE SIGN OF THE FACT THAT GOD IS CLOSE TO US. LITTLE GESTURES OF LOVE, OF TENDERNESS, OF ATTENTION THAT LET US THINK THAT THE LORD IS WITH US, CLOSE TO US. IN THIS WAY WE OPEN THE DOOR OF MERCY.” ~ POPE FRANCIS

In keeping with Pope Francis's suggestion to "fast from indifference," we encourage every child to perform a kind deed for someone each week and then write it on a leaf. Return the leaf and, throughout Lent, we will watch our tree (located in the Lower Church) begin to bud with these Leaves of Mercy. Leaves may be picked up and returned at the Young Stewards Corner in the back vestibule of the church.

Questions? Please contact Kristen Ng at 266-1049 or [email protected]. May God bless you as we journey through the season of Lent!

In keeping with Pope Francis’ Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home, St. Anthony’s is taking steps to become a “green” campus.

We have begun recycling all recyclables generated here at the Church and rectory.

Please help us by placing all recyclable trash in proper con-tainers when using the Church and meeting rooms

Northport and East Northport Rotary clubs are collecting shoes to help Soles4Souls in

fight against global poverty Attention anyone with a closet: Those shoes you no longer want are desperately needed to fight the human tragedy of natural disasters and global poverty. The World Bank estimates that approximately 400 million chil-dren worldwide – more than the entire U.S. population – live in pronounced poverty. Millions of these children will grow up never having had a pair of shoes, resulting in significant chal-lenges for their health and wellbeing. Lacking proper footwear, countless children will not be able or permitted to attend school. And tens of millions of these poverty-stricken, barefoot boys and girls will be infected with soil-transmitted parasitic diseases like hookworm, causing lasting suffering and lifelong debilitation.

What you can do to help: Used and new shoes of any kind (yes, high heels and boots) can be dropped off between March 1 and March 31, to the vestibule of the Church

Please tie shoes together in pairs

the rear of the Church before and after all the weekend Masses. During the week items can be brought to Parish Outreach, Monday -Friday between the hours of 10:00AM and 2:00PM. Thank you for helping us minister to the lambs of our community who are in need.
