OUR MISSIONSaint Anthony of Padua Parish is a welcoming, loving Catholic community, centered in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit.
Together we celebrate the liturgy in prayer and sacrament; we educate our children and adults in the faith; we support and reach out to those in need.
We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to con-tinue: to love one another as Jesus loves us, to share the word of God and to serve both within and beyond our Parish family.

Sunday Scripture Reflection Please Pray
September 16, 2018 ~ 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time We know the signs of defeat: slumped shoulders,
downcast eyes, a chastened demeanor. For those of us sin-cerely trying to follow Jesus, defeat is inevitable. We com-mit to spending more time with our kids, but that one pro-ject still looms. We resolve to be a good person, but our selfishness strikes again. It can be easy to get discouraged over our moral failures. Today’s Gospel is a small, intrigu-ing look at this process in the life of St. Peter.
First, Jesus’ questions get the Apostles thinking about his true identity. This results in a confession of faith from Peter: “You are the Christ.” Eager faith characterizes Peter’s relationship with Jesus. First to follow, first to leap out of the boat, and, we know, first to deny. It’s the latter tendency that manifests itself later in the Gospel. When Jesus predicts the Passion, “Peter took Him aside and be-gan to rebuke Him.” Jesus’ rebuke in turn is stinging. While Peter’s caution to Jesus is in private, Jesus intentionally turns back to the others as He declares, “Get behind Me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”
Like Peter, we rarely get it right all the time. Peter understood that Jesus was the Messiah, but he had a false concept of what that Messiah would accomplish. Jesus wants to make sure the rest of the disciples don’t follow down the wrong road. The Christian life is a difficult one, as Jesus later tells the crowds. “‘Whoever wishes to come after Me must deny himself.’” Yet the mercy of God is abundant. If we renew our trust and our efforts after a fall, every de-feat is transformed into redemptive grace. “Whoever loses his life for My sake … will save it.”

In the second reading today, St. James has harsh words for those who do not put their faith into actions. May we be such good stewards of
God’s gifts to us that we can never be accused of having “faith that does nothing in practice.”

Family and Children Faith Formation
One day, as Jesus and His disciples were walking along a road, Jesus asked them, "Who do people say that I am?" The disciples answered, "Some say John the Baptist or one of the prophets." "And you - who do you say that I am?" Jesus replied. Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Messiah." Then Jesus began to teach the disciples what it meant for Him to be the Mes-siah, the One sent to save the people from their sin. He told His friends that He would need to suffer pain and rejection. He told them He would be killed, and after three days, He would rise again.
Being God's chosen Messiah was not an easy job! It wasn't all healing and miracles and good times. There were going to be some really hard times ahead, too. He said whoever wishes to follow me take up the cross.
Jesus is not calling us to pick up a wooden cross. He is calling us to do hard things to love God and other people – even when they hurt us. Do not think about what I want, but what they need. This starts with everyday events like putting down your video game to play with your younger brother or sister.
Have I taught my children about Jesus today? Let's Pray. Dear God, we thank you for Jesus and His willingness to suffer for our sake. Give us the strength and courage to be his faith-ful disciples when it's easy and when it's not so easy, too. Amen.
