2nd Sunday of Lent

“Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw His glory.” Today’s Gospel records the event we call the Transfiguration of the Lord. In this miraculous moment, Jesus’ divine nature was revealed clearly to Peter, James and John. Often, we think only in terms of what happened to Jesus: “His face changed” and “His clothing became dazzling white” and he be-gan a supernatural conversation with two ancient prophets. But that was only half of the story. The other part is what happened to the men. They were able to witness this revelation of Jesus only be-cause they were “fully awake.” Had they stayed sleeping, they would have missed out. They would not have had this astonishing insight into the glory of their friend and Master. It’s an obvious point but one that may need more attention than we’d care to admit. Of course we have to be “awake” in order to absorb the fullness of our faith. If we are not tuned in, not attentive, not exerting any effort, then we are certainly going to miss out. But the fact is that we don’t always real-ize we are falling asleep. Just as Peter, James, and John were “overcome” with sleep, we too can slip into this state without necessarily realizing it’s hap-pening. Spiritually speaking, we can become numb or lazy and slowly fade away from the fervor of authentic faith. This is why the church, in her wisdom, gives us the season of Lent. During these weeks, we strive to purify ourselves by attacking the sins and selfishness that make us spiritual sleepwalkers. This is the time to refocus, to clear away the cobwebs and to become “fully awake.” Ultimately, we pray that these efforts will allow us to truly see “His glory” come Easter-tide.

THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY:

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT SIN

“I am a sinner. This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner.”

Those words of Pope Francis from a 2013 interview get right to the heart of the mystery of sin in our life. The simple fact is that sin is a reality. We can’t rationalize it away, and we can’t find excuses; we sin. As much as we try to blame others and try to find all sorts of reasons to say it’s not our fault, the unvarnished truth is we sin. Ironically, though, it’s only by admitting the truth of our sinfulness that we can truly discover and experience the incon-ceivable depth and richness of God’s mercy. As Pope Francis remarked in 2010, “Only we big sinners have this grace of knowing what salvation really means.” That’s because to understand what sin is, we first have to start with God’s love. We are profoundly loved by God with a love that is unconditional and life-giving. God has given us the gift of life. Through baptism, God has given us the gift of union with Christ and with each other in the Church. In the face of God’s free gift, the only proper response on our part is a response of love that is given back to God, a love that makes our life a gift to Him and that leads to living in the way He asks us to. Sin sets itself against God’s love for us and turns our hearts away from that love. Like the sin of Adam and Eve, it is dis-obedience, a revolt against whereby we desire to have a mastery over our life that in truth belongs to God. Sin is an in-ordinate love of self, even to the point of putting oneself before God. It is a proud exaltation of self, in contrast to the obedience of Jesus, whose observance of the Father’s will brought about our salvation. Sin can be likened to a disorder or sickness. Take the example of our physical health: sometimes we are seriously ill, and sometimes we just have a cold. So, too, with spiritual health: sin can be serious (mortal) or less serious (venial). The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that “sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidarity.” (1849) Sin is a personal act, but our sins can sometimes lead others to commit sin. Our participation in collective wrong-doing can lead to “social sin,” sin that gives rise to social situations and institutions that are contrary to the very nature of God. The awareness of sin in our life should lead us to immediately trust in God’s mercy. We have the great gift of being able to seek God’s forgiveness in the Sacrament of Penance. The Sacrament of Penance brings us the experience of God’s love and mercy, proving to us His desire to keep us always close to Him as His beloved sons and daughters.

Did We Take a Step?

Peter, James and John wanted to build a “booth” for Jesus and just stay on the mountain where His transfiguration took place.

But the Son of God, the Chosen One, knew that He must instead keep moving toward His Crucifixion. We, too, must rise from worship and do what we can to hasten the coming of the Kingdom.

Every generation holds the responsibility to bring our young people into our family of faith. Our Youth, Young Adult and Cam-pus Ministry programs help make that possible.

Joanne Buonocore, Campus Minister at Stony Brook University, shares why the ministry is so important.

"Our Campus Ministry program goals are two-fold; first to be the faith family for our Catholic students on Campus. Many of them are away from home for the first time and we are a Par-ish for them. We are here to help them to grow closer to Christ.

Our second goal is to open our doors to the rest of the students on Campus — to invite anyone in who may be culturally Catholic, but not engaged in their faith, as well as students who are searching for something but are not sure what they are searching for — to welcome them all in."

K of C

Fr. Thomas A. Judge Knights of Columbus ...

Did you Know?

Lent is not a time for unhappiness but rather a time for us to experi-ence a new springtime in our relationship with God and others. In fact, the word “Lent” comes from an Old English word for “spring.”

As the season of Lent begins during this Year of Mercy, devote some serious thought and prayer to your family. In the rough and tumble of daily life, how easy it is to get on one another’s nerves. How easy it is to irritate one’s spouse and children with annoying habits. Sometimes, tempers are short. Relationships can quickly grow cold, even icy. Lent provides an opportunity to gather your family to talk things over, to resolve first to seek God’s mercy, and to practice mercy within the family and beyond. (Excerpted from Columbia Magazine column by Archbishop Wil-liam E Lori, Supreme Chaplain ) .

If you would like more information or wish to be part of our ever-growing Fr. Judge K of C family, or rent our hall for any occa-sion, please let me know.

LIVING MERCY MAKES US MISSIONARIES OF MERCY, AND BEING MISSIONARIES ENABLES US INCREAS-INGLY TO GROW IN GOD’S MERCY. SO LET US TAKE SERIOUSLY THE FACT OF BEING CHRISTIANS, AND LET US COMMIT OUR-SELVES TO LIVING AS BE-LIEVERS, BECAUSE ONLY IN THIS WAY MAY THE GOS-PEL TOUCH THE PEOPLE’S HEARTS, OPENING THEM TO RECEIVE THE GRACE OF LOVE.
