With this season we complete our milestone 40th anniversary programme. I’m delighted that we follow a star-studded Autumn with an equally eminent Spring. There are some mouth-watering events and series to look forward to, many of them created exclusively by or for Turner Sims.

Our Associate Artists the Elias Quartet and London Sinfonietta reach the end of their formal three-year partnerships with two fascinating takes on music history. Schumann’s three quartets are comparative rarities in chamber music programmes and the Elias’ three-concert series plus associated talks, specially created for Turner Sims, will be an opportunity to re-evaluate these important works in the composer’s canon. Meanwhile, the London Sinfonietta and composer Fraser Trainer guide us through the music of the last 100 years.

In our jazz line-up it’s a particular pleasure to present a special weekend focus on saxophonist John Surman. John’s music has been a regular part of the Turner Sims programme over the past two decades and in his 70th birthday year it is fitting to celebrate the work of this master instrumentalist and composer. Reaching 70 in a different

way is the Borodin Quartet who stop off on a worldwide tour to perform works from two composers with whom they are synonymous: Beethoven and Shostakovich. And with Pascal Rogé, joined by his wife Ami, presenting French repertoire; Chopin competition winner Yundi performing an all-Chopin programme; and Emma Kirkby exploring the golden age of Early Music there are opportunities galore to see artists in repertoire for which their interpretations are justifiably celebrated.

Our Ruby Campaign continues apace as we seek to deliver the second phase of our revamp to the building following the Summer 2014 refurbishment of the auditorium seating - I’m hugely grateful to everyone who has supported the appeal thus far. Two prize winners from the Chopin Competition – Ingolf Wunder from 2010 and Yundi, outright winner in 2000 – make their debuts with Chopin and, in Wunder’s case Liszt too. Another winner – of the 2012 Leeds Competition – is Federico Colli and his debut showcases his approach to a range of repertoire, from Mozart’s glorious variations to Scriabin’s technically challenging last sonata.

A different challenge is faced by Christian Blackshaw who closes the series with Schubert’s monumental last three sonatas. Lastly Pascal Rogé, known for his solo and chamber recitals here, visits with wife Ami Rogé for a magical evening of music for four hands on one piano. French repertoire, of course, is to the fore.

Put together a list of legendary British jazz saxophonists and composers and it is more than likely that Courtney Pine, Andy Sheppard and John Surman would appear on it.

All three present new projects at Turner Sims this season: a celebratory weekend for John Surman, the world premiere of a new project for Courtney

Pine and Zoe Rahman and Andy Sheppard showcasing music from his new quartet album. New material also comes from Norwegian Marius Neset whilst American Ravi Coltrane completes an extraordinary quintet of saxophonists. Legendary Brazilian group Azymuth revisit their 1975 debut album Azimuth, and we journey from Brazil to Manchester

to welcome GoGo Penguin, whose debut comes hot on the heels of earning a 2014 Mercury nomination for their acclaimed album v2.0. Finally no celebration past and present would be complete without a vocal element. Ian Shaw and swinging New York band Hot Sardines both guarantee celebratory occasions whatever repertoire they are presenting.

The Spring season is full of family connections.

Master performer Amjad Ali Khan appears with his two virtuoso sons, whilst two aspects of British folk are represented by The Unthanks featuring Tyneside sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, and the rising star family members of the Sussex-based

Young Coppers. European rising stars come in the shape of Finnish band Frigg who showcase their energetic Nordic fiddle sounds for the first time, and Portuguese singer Gisela João whose exciting new take on fado is making waves in her Portuguese homeland. At a global level Iain Stewart and Callum Roberts offer views on oil and the

oceans respectively, and Catapluf’s Musical Journey comprises many musical elements from around the world. Finally Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham may not be directly related but their 25 years touring together has made them a regular fixture and part of the family for audiences at Turner Sims.

One of India’s greatest musicians, Amjad Ali Khan is the unrivalled master of the 19-string fretless North Indian lute called the sarod. Born to Indian music legend Haafiz Ali Khan and heir to illustrious musical lineage that invented the instrument itself, Khan gave his first recital at age 6 and was a national celebrity by his teens. Marked by a plaintive, almost voice-like sonority and nearly superhuman speed and clarity, Khan’s artistry has

gathered legions of fans from all corners of the globe. Appearing with his two sons, both virtuosos in their own right, tonight is an opportunity to see this master of the sarod and his family at work.

This young Italian pianist from Brescia, with his engaging stage presence and trademark cravat, impressed the contest’s jurors and audience alike.

Composer and multi-instrumentalist John Surman is one of Britain’s most well-known and well-respected jazz performers. Turner Sims has enjoyed a strong relationship with John over many years including presenting the first UK live performances of his ECM discs Rain on the Window and Saltash Bells. As part of our 40th anniversary, we are delighted to present a weekend of music which celebrates this outstanding artist.

In an exclusive performance for Turner Sims, John Surman is joined by an outstanding rhythm section featuring some of the UK’s finest young jazz performers.

John Warren’s 1971 masterly jazz suite, Tales of the Algonquin, stands comparison with the music of Gil Evans or Maria Schneider. John Surman, who was principal soloist on the original recording, brings the work to the stage with its creator, John Warren and SYJO.

Following his year-long immersion in song in 1840 and orchestral music in 1841 Robert Schumann spent 1842 focussing almost exclusively on chamber music, producing three string quartets, a piano quartet and a piano quintet. For the last of their three years as Associate Artists the Elias Quartet

present an exclusive series centred around the three quartets. Across three concerts the Elias place Schumann’s works in context with the composers who influenced him, as well as British music from the past 40 years and today. Each event is preceded by an introduction to Schumann the composer and the music for the evening.

The final concert in the series is also the Elias’ final concert as Associate Artists. For this special occasion they are joined by one of the world’s great Schumann interpreters, pianist Jonathan Biss, for the composer’s Piano Quintet. The first pairing of piano with string quartet by a Romantic composer, the work is dedicated to Schumann’s wife Clara, herself a renowned pianist. Emily Howard’s work receives its second performance following its premiere in May by the Elias.

THE UNTHANKS

Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, The Unthanks is a family affair for Tyneside sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, with Rachel married to pianist, producer, arranger and composer, Adrian McNally. Definable only by their restless, peerless eccentricity, The Unthanks see folk music less as

a style of music and more as an oral history that offers perspective on our own time. Their unique approach to storytelling straddles the complex relationship between modernism and learning from the past.

Emma Kirkby, the grande dame of Early Music, has been a regular visitor to Turner Sims throughout its history. Tonight’s programme focusses on the songs of the late Renaissance and early Baroque composers who drew much of their inspiration from the stirring tales of Classical literature.

From Theseus and Ariadne to Dido and Aeneas, Emma and lutenist Jakob Lindberg explore this period of significant musical output through the music of Dowland, D’India, Purcell, Ferrabosco and more.

Combining funk, soul and jazz with Samba, Azymuth are the legendary Brazilian three piece orchestra who were responsible for creating a new sound and genre of their own – ‘Samba Doido (Crazy Samba)’. Tonight they revisit their legendary debut album, released in the summer of 1975, Azimuth. It is the band’s definitive work, a raw stew of psychedelic guitar fuzz, tripped out space-funk and lush jazz soundscapes. 2015 sees them reissue this seminal album to mark its 40th anniversary.

One sixth of the modern global economy depends on hydrocarbon fuels. Without them the planet would grind to a halt. No single resource has ever changed so overwhelmingly the course of mankind’s and earth’s history. Ingolf Wunder grabbed the attention of a wide public when he won second prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2010, the year of Chopin’s bicentenary. For his Turner Sims debut he performs Chopin and Liszt including the Hexaméron Variations. The composers were friends for a period when both were in Paris, and in 1837,

Princess Belgiojoso invited six composers, including Liszt and Chopin to write variations on a theme from Bellini’s opera I puritani. Liszt organised the effort, and composed the introduction, interludes and finale, but the most notable contribution came from Chopin, who ironically transforms the rousing martial sung chorus into a beautifully cantabile larghetto for solo piano.

Grammy-nominated saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, son of the legendary John Coltrane, has matured into an artist at the height of a career built on his talent, not his name. He has been praised for his music’s elusive beauty (Downbeat) and for his style informed by tradition but not encumbered by it (Philadelphia City Paper). Tonight he appears with his excellent quartet.

GoGo Penguin’s skittering break-beats, telepathic interplay and a penchant for anthemic melody all contribute to a sound that’s wholly their own. The trio are an exhilarating live act, drawing on a heady brew of influences from Brian Eno, Massive Attack, John Cage and Squarepusher to Manchester’s grey rain-streaked

Natalie Clein is in demand as a recitalist and soloist with major symphony orchestras across the world. Young Coppers is the new generation of the famous English folk singing family The Copper Family. Performing Sussex folk songs a cappella with stout harmony, accompanied by the stories passed down through the family, Young Coppers continue the family tradition, proudly taking up the baton following the recent and sad loss of their grandfather Bob Copper MBE, winner of the BBC Radio 2 Good Tradition Award in 2001.

A product of the internationally renowned El Sistema programme, this young world-class quartet is comprised of the section leaders in Venezuela’s famed Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. The Simón Bolívar String Quartet have worked with such musical personalities as Gustavo Dudamel, Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle.

There are some obvious facts about this quartet, such as that they come from Venezuela, from the El Sistema family, that they were – and still are – the principals of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, but what you’ll experience new… is the unique power of their music-making.

Turner Sims closes for Easter on Thursday 2 April at 5pm, and reopens on Thursday 9 April at 10am.

Turner Sims Bar opens one hour before the event.

Exchanges and refundsTickets are non-refundable. We can offer exchanges or credit for Turner Sims promoted events, however we must be in receipt of your original tickets at least 24 hours before the performance (4 days for group bookings).

Tickets received fewer than 24 hours before the performance may only be resold if the event is sold out.

These services are subject to a £2 administration fee.

Tickets can only be refunded in the event of a performance being cancelled. Postage is non-refundable.

ConcessionsDiscounts for Turner Sims promoted events are available for over 60s, registered unemployed, registered disabled, children under 18, students in full-time education and University of Southampton staff.
