SON if, as the American philosopher

Walter B. Pitkin believed, ‘life begins at 40’ then Turner Sims has a great deal to look forward to.

Our anniversary year opens with a ‘new’ auditorium, the seating having been replaced for the first time since the building opened in 1974.

This new look has been made possible thanks to a hugely generous anonymous donation which has enabled us to complete Phase One of a major refurbishment programme to revitalise the building. Phase Two, improving backstage facilities for artists, revamping the foyer, and upgrading lighting and sound provision in the auditorium, is now our focus. The Ruby Campaign, which we launched in June as part of this anniversary year, seeks your involvement in making the dreams become reality.

Alongside our capital programme, the artistic programme is in rude health as we enter our fifth decade. As you browse through the brochure you will find many familiar names and faces visiting to celebrate the anniversary with us: Nicola Benedetti, John lill, emma Johnson, and the Takács Quartet among the classical highlights; Tim Garland, Neil Cowley and Kekko Fornarelli in the jazz series, and Susheela Raman and She’Koyokh in the global series. Meanwhile, upholding Turner Sims’ deserved reputation for presenting some of the most exciting new artists and pioneering projects, Autumn sees debuts for pianist and Chopin Competition winner Rafał Blechacz, double

BBC Folk Awards nominee Olivia Chaney and African singer Dobet Gnahoré. One of the most exciting big bands of recent times, Troyk-estra are here fresh from their Parliamentary Jazz Awards triumph, whilst having presented the Glastonbury Festival’s first ever silent film with live soundtrack in the summer, the Dodge Brothers and pianist Neil Brand reprise the performance here in November as part of Southampton Film Week.

The anniversary wouldn’t be complete without some special occasions. In December we are taking over the O2 Guildhall Southampton to present The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain on their first visit to the city and on 19 November itself, 40 years to the day since Elisabeth Söderström’s inaugural recital, we bring together a star studded cast for a gala concert.

The Spring 2015 season, which will be announced later in 2014, will continue the celebrations but for the moment, whether you are an artist, audience member, user of the building, concert or education partner, or funder, thank you for supporting the venue over the last 40 years, and for making it what it is today: a special place to experience GREAT MUSIC LIVE.

As we mark our anniversary as one of the finest music venues in the country, exciting refurbishments are taking place at Turner Sims.

The first step is the replacement of our auditorium seating, which has been made possible in part through a significant contribution from an anonymous donor – but this is just the beginning. Planned renovations include upgrading our auditorium lighting and sound desks, modernising our backstage facilities and improving our foyer.

We invite you to play your part in this important moment in our history by donating to The Ruby Campaign.

Every penny raised through The Ruby Campaign will help us achieve our vision for Turner Sims, ensuring its future as a destination for world-class performers and artists, and enhancing your experience.

Donate towards our future and become part of our history…

Make a donationYou may choose to make your gift anonymously, or be acknowledged on The Ruby Campaign Roll of Donors.

Name a seatFor gifts of £250 or over, you will be offered the opportunity to name a seat in our auditorium – for yourself, or perhaps as a special gift for a loved one. In recognition of your generous support, you will also receive a commemorative certificate.

PiANO SeRieS 2014/2015

The music of Chopin and some of the defining works written for the piano feature in this year’s series performed by some of the instrument’s greatest exponents, many of them competition winners.

Beethoven’s 32 sonatas stand as the pinnacle of the piano repertoire and we hear the Appassionata as part of John lill’s recital, and the Pathétique as part of Rafał Blechacz’s debut recital. Blechacz first came to prominence when he won the

International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 2005 and the composer’s music features in his recital and that of Yundi, Chopin competition winner in 2000 who performs all four Ballades and the Twenty-four Preludes. ingolf Wunder, a prizewinner in the most recent Chopin competition in 2010, combines Chopin with Liszt whilst Federico Colli, the most recent winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012, includes Ravel’s fiery Gaspard de la nuit for his debut recital. French repertoire of a

different kind – for four hands at one piano – is the focus for Pascal and Ami Rogé. The series is completed with two programmes of classical repertoire. Christian Blackshaw closes the season with Schubert’s last three sonatas, separate works but conceived as a single collection, and Radu lupu presents music by Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven.

From solo piano to full-on big band, the jazz series profiles a wide range of instrumental combinations.

The piano trio is one of the most enduringly popular line-ups in jazz and in the Neil Cowley Trio, Kekko Fornarelli Trio and The Peter edwards Trio we have three fascinatingly different takes on the medium.

British trio Troyka’s distinctive sound is recast in big band form with a rare outing for Troyk-estra, one of the most exciting large groups to form in recent years. Three members of another band of the moment, Snarky Puppy, are at the heart of the Bill laurance Project which with string quartet included offers an enticing mix of jazz and classical. Pianist Ketil Bjørnstad’s intimate music is influenced not only by his

classical beginnings but also his Norwegian heritage, whilst another pianist celebrates a very personal jazz association: Darius Brubeck reflects on his father Dave’s music as well as presenting his own. Finally two British legends, saxophonist Tim Garland and bassist Gary Crosby, make welcome returns to Turner Sims to present their new groups.

in a season which encompasses music from across the world there is a particular focus on the female voice in its many guises.

The homelands of the Ivory Coast and Brazil are the inspirations for Dobet Gnahoré, and Mônica vasconcelos respectively, showcasing traditional songs and rarely heard music. British Indian vocalist Susheela Raman draws

on a Euro-Afro-Asian musical landscape for her material, whilst Turkish-born singer Çigdem Aslan is part of She’Koyokh’s Eastern European musical celebration and De Temps Antan perform foot-stomping traditional music from Quebec. Closer to home two ‘Best original song’ nominees at the 2014 BBC Folk Awards appear in the shape of lisa Knapp (who guests with Harvey Brough, Clara

Sanabras, and the University of Southampton voices), and multi-instrumentalist Olivia Chaney. Spiro’s music may have English origins but encompasses a global sound which has elements of Steve Reich, dance music and the Penguin Café Orchestra. Finally, who better to guide us in this or any season than Nicholas Crane, a man with an encyclopaedic knowledge of maps and the places they take us?

an exhibition formed over many years, she has travelled extensively to capture the

dedication of classical pianists and their struggle to attain perfection.

amy’s work candidly explores the passion of pianists as they submit themselves to painstaking rehearsal, the pressure of live performance on the global stage and challenging studio-recording sessions.

Grammy award winner and Radio 3 Music Award nominee Dobet Gnahoré joins us on her first UK tour, accompanied by her band and contemporary african dancers from the uK. one of the freshest talents in new african music, she sings in seven languages and embraces musical styles from West african mandinka melodies to congolese rumba andfromIvoryCoast’sziglibiti to cameroonian bikoutsi.

Gnahoré’s not-so-secret weapon for lifting her performance to another level was her wild, acrobatic dancing, which she saved for exactly the right moments.

The sounds that hit you first are sounds that you are familiar with; they sound folky, but once you start listening to the music and how it’s composed you hear elements of systems music – people like Steve Reich, Philip Glass, dance music. All sorts of musical influences are woven into this very contemporary music. This is soulful music, passionate music and I love it.

THe UKUlele ORCHeSTRA OF GReAT BRiTAiNAT O2 GUILDHALL SOUTHAMPTON

The rise and rise of the humble ukulele is surely down in part to these magnificent all-singing, all-strumming exponents of the ‘bonsai guitar’.

in their musical world nothing is sacred, and any type of music can go with any other – from classical ballet to classic ballads, punk, soul, rock and roll, ‘the ukes’ are a multi-talented bunch, and their twisted wit, sharp-tongued satire and on-the-money arrangements are

coupled with a deliriously funny dead-pan delivery. turner sims brings this magical group to Southamptonforthefirsttimefor an evening of festive fun.
