By the time you read this, theEaster season will be over- kidsand adults will have eaten their fillof chocolate eggs and families willhave reconnected over the schooland bank holiday. Hopefully theweather will have improved suffi-ciently to allow us to contemplatethe garden and the possibility ofsummer barbecues. But maybe, just maybe we should also con-template something else; afterEaster Christians celebrate theresurrection story and the fact thatGod is on the loose. God is out ofthe box!

You see when you think about it weall have a tendency to box God, tokeep religion firmly under control. We tend to access God on ourterms subjecting God to the rules

and regulations of Church struc-tures and practices as and whenwe want to access them. We createclubs of church goers, and toooften we exclude others particu-larly those on the margins ofsociety from our religious experi-ences. But people and especiallyreligious people should take timeto reflect on this; it is because ofEaster that we believe in the resur-rection and so God is free, freefrom the constraints of religioussystems, free to use religion tomeet our needs in the most unex-pected places and in the most un-expected people. God you see stillspeaks to us both within churchesand beyond them. His resurrectionoffers the possibility of changingpeople and society by touchingthem hope and love. His resurrec-

tion speaks of a different perspec-tive where all people matter andwhere we are touched with aninnate beauty and worth becauseGod freely loves us.

And if God is free, if Christ is risen, well the world is turned upsidedown and our prejudices andpersonal ideologies are challengedto see that God is no longer blackor white, man or woman, gay orstraight, catholic or protestant. What matters is that God by hisresurrection is still working in theworld to renew it , transforming usby his love and mercy and the for-giveness of our sins.

SandownRY invited comments on the recently heldCharrette on Sandown. It was generally felt that it was very profes-sionally led, well chaired and did aneffective job of bringing out peoples views. The Charrette was not to address whetherSandown should be developed, but that itwas a given that it would, and that over thethree days discussion would be whatwould be there, how it would be developedand within what context. BS commentedthat the consultants had noted that withouta good town centre a development atSandown would not thrive. BS felt that thiswas the most important conclusion and un-derlined how critical the town centre devel-opment is to the town as a whole.GV observed that one interesting point toemerge was that those landowners whoretained a long term interest in the landbeing developed (like the Cawdor Mainte-nance Trust at Delnies) were able to placeconditions on the future use of the landwhich are much stronger and harder tooverturn than Planning conditions. Thiswas both relevant and useful in respect ofSandown, where the trustees of theCommon Good could – if they chose –maintain oversight and impose similar con-ditionsThe Charrette is process is not over. Oncethe consultants fine tune the ideas putforward, sketches and displays will beavailable for public viewing at the Golf ViewHotel on 29th February from 3pm until7pm, with meeting commencing afterpublic viewing at 7pm. RY encouragedresidents to attend the viewing at the GolfView HotelTown CentreRY noted that Nairnshire Telegraph hadreported that Old Community Centre wouldbe demolished starting on 05 March 2012and would take a couple of months. Shewas hoping that this could be extended toinclude the Petrol Station owned by the Co-op but this is still being negotiated. Thesite would be cleared, landscaped andmade into parking. It was hoped that thestone King Street buildings would beconverted into use, whether housing orbusiness. Councillor Liz MacDonaldfavoured the buildings being used forrented council housing.Veterinary Practice application (Lodgehill)

A planning application had been submittedto the Council for a small rear extension tothe Lodgehill Clinic building to enable itsuse as a veterinary clinic.Traffic Issues, RatrunsBill Young had written a letter on behalf ofNWCC to Mr Richard Evans, Area Roadsand Community Works Manager of THCregarding Local Authorities Traffic Ordersregulations of 1999 and Prohibition ofVehicles except for Access, Marine Road toAltonburn Road, Nairn. The letteraddresses the ‘rat runs’ through the westend of Nairn due primarily to installation oftraffic lights. A96 through traffic is increas-ingly using these residential streets toavoid traffic lights and tail backs of trafficduring peak times. This creates problemsin a quiet residential area with elderlyresidents. The lack of pavements on somestretches is a safety issue – along SandownFarm Lane and by the Links, an area withopen play parks which visitors are encour-aged to visit. The letter invited solutions, and proposed the installation of restrictedaccess signage. BY noted that there wouldbe a statutory consultation process andlooked forward to receiving a responsefrom Highland Council.BS was disappointed that public and pressreaction had so far been very negative.Prejudiced comments did a disservice tothe serious points being raised. The problem had arisen because of the authori-ties’ failure to consider the local impact ofthe additional traffic lights. It was not onlya matter of ‘rat runs’ through the West Endof Nairn. There was also a serious safetyissue of traffic using theCroy/Cawdor/Auldearn road as an unoffi-cial bypass. There should have been morejoined up thinking between TransportScotland and Highland Council planners..

RY felt that the problem of traffic tail backswill resurface during the summer monthsand wondered how could this beaddressed. Police are not traffic planners, they enforce laws and do not analyse trafficflow. Mr Colin Macaulay pointed out thatpolice are there for crime prevention and‘driving without due care and attention’ isa crime. Anyone can contact the police toreport this, which could result in theoffender receiving points on their licence.Cllr LM advised consultation with the police

over traffic issues and encouraged CC’s towrite to Keith Brown the Transport Ministerto keep up the pressure for the NairnBypass to be brought forward as soon aspossible RY looked forward to receiving areply from THC Any other Business- Firhall BridgeRY enquired how Mr Murd Dunbar was pro-gressing with campaign to improve acces-sibility across Firhall bridge. MD repliedthat the pipe on the bridge was to beremoved in May, as per copy of letterreceived from Ron Mackenzie of THCdated 17 February 2012, but was stillseeking the funding for ramps. The costwas likely to be some £30,000. MD hadheard from Cllr Graham Marsden that nonaccessible signs were to be placed nearthe bridge, after discussion with AccessPanel regarding access. Cllr LizMacDonald mentioned the possibility ofsome cash for the accessibility rampscoming from the discretionary fund whichhas £50,000 per annum to draw upon. However if £30,000 were to be allocated toFirhall bridge, this would mean significantlyless funding being available to the manyother local organisations, groups andevents such as the Book and Arts Festival. The discretionary fund prefers to matchfund projects. Chances of matchedfunding might be significantly greater ifcontributors could also be obtained fromelsewhere. There then followed discussion overfunding from various sources. BSregretted that when amounts of moneybecame available for community use, suchas the Sainsbury money, there had beenno consultation on how this money shouldbe assigned. The money had beenallocated to improvements to shopfrontage in the High street, CCTV improve-ments and street lights. Even if these wereworthy projects, BS felt there should bemore transparency and local public dis-cussion to get ideas on how to allocate themoney. and to prioritise needs within thecommunity. Cllr Liz Macdonald agreed.John Dolan hoped there might be an op-portunity for ‘community gain’ from devel-opment at Nairn South, and MD added thatthere could be similar monetary opportuni-ties with Sandown.

“ ”Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners

In practically everything, save Christianity, there is a great variety. Christianity is unique in every respect. There is only one Christianity and it stands alone and apart from all the religions of the world. It cannot be compared with these religions, because it has nothing in common with them. It is the only and it is supreme, just as Jesus Christ is the only and is supreme. Only one Being in all the universe has the right and power to save the lost: Jesus Christ alone can save sinners. He came into the world to save sinners; He died on the Cross to save sinners; He was raised from the dead and exalted at God’s right hand to save sinners; He is appointed to save sinners; He is proclaimed in Scripture as the Saviour of sinners; and He does save all who receive Him by faith as their own personal Saviour. He alone can save you from the power of sin, the penalty of sin and make you a new creation with a new nature and new desires.

Only one way has been provided whereby sinners may be saved. That way is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” Acts 16:31. “To him that worketh not, but believeth... his faith is counted for righteousness” Romans 4:5. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” Ephesians 2:8. It is alone by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that sinners are saved. Good works, morality, baptism, joining a church, observing the Lord’s Supper and any similar things do not save you. These things are all good and right in their place but they are not a means to salvation. Salvation is not something the sinner must work out or merit, but it is provided by Christ’s redeeming work and the free gift of God to all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. The sinner cannot earn or merit salvation, he must receive it as a free gift from God.

Only one thing remains for the sinner to do in order to be saved. He must turn from his sin and come to Christ, believing on Him and receiving Him to be saved. And he may freely come to Christ, since he is invited to come. Dear reader, come to the Lord Jesus, for though you have nothing to commend you to God, yet you are called, and He says, “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” John 6:37. Therefore, come as you are, and do not delay.

namely sinners, or those who are lost. The supreme purpose for which Jesus Christ came into the world is that He might save sinners. He came to save you.. Jesus Himself declared, “I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” Matthew 9.13. All men by nature and practice are sinners, but multitudes do not own nor confess that they are. For such there is no hope of salvation. Only those who own and confess themselves lost sinners before God can be saved.

Parliament Blog& Tides

Over the Easter recess, I am looking forward to a visit tothe USA and Canada in connection with Scotland week.It will be my first major visit of this type as Scotland’s manin energy, enterprise and tourism. It will include a visit tosome of the oil and gas companies which have a strongpresence in Aberdeen, but which are mostly headquar-

tered in Texas. I am sure that some Spotlight readers are old enoughto recall the first series of the US TV show, Dallas.

I am looking forward to telling them that unlike in Dallas Texas, inScotland the Ewing’s never really went away! Seriously though, there is a great chance now in oil and gas and also

in renewables to see Scotland continue to succeed. We have seenover the past couple of weeks, major wins - in Nigg global energy newskills academy - in Edinburgh the Green Investment Bank andGamesa the offshore wind turbine manufacturer to create 800 jobs. None of this happens by accident and I pay tribute to the people who

work in HIE, Scottish Enterprise and SDI who do the boiler room workto make all this happen.

In fact one of the top people in the enterprise network told me thaton the day the Gamesa decision was to be delivered - by phone - asto whether they chose Scotland or England - he was so nervous thathe could not sit at his desk - but paced around the block. All of that andthe sunshine is shining a spotlight on us too. There is a divinity lookingout for us.

Various news reports of misbehaviour in theParliament bars might lead some to believethat we MPs do nothing more than spend ourweeknights in the bars around Parliament.Unfortunately, for most of us this is untrue.

But when the opportunity arose for a quick half pint in thename of work, who was I to pass it up?When I was told that Stephen Crossland from the LochNess Brewery was in Parliament to visit his ale and I hadbeen invited to join him for a half pint, I didn’t need to beasked twice, I was delighted that a real ale from my con-stituency had been chosen to go on tap in the ParliamentStrangers bar. The Loch Ness Brewery is a small 2-barrelplant that produces 6 regular beers a year using the finestof malts, hops and highland water. What better way todemonstrate what the Highlands have to offer? And it seems the aptly named Ness Minister beer proveda big hit amongst the MPs. By the time we arrived onWednesday afternoon, three of the five kegs that hadbeen sent down were already empty. Fergus Ewing MSPDanny Alexander MP

The superb weather in March really caught everyone on the hop. On lawns all round the Firth, we soon began to see the grass start growing, far too early, and of course it soon needed a cut ! I may be too late of course, but the first cuts should always be just a trim. Indeed, my mission this season is to persuade as many amateur green keepers as possible to resist the urge to scalp the lawn. I have to say, it seems to be a “man-thing”. It is truly the worst thing you can do to a piece of lawn turf. A domestic lawn is a completely different beast to the putting green at the golf club, different base, different grass and a different treatment regime. Scalping a lawn takes the leaf off the grass plant, removes the colour, and inhibits strength and growth. Weak grass on a lawn provides less resistance to the competition, and in our part of the world, that means MOSS. We all have enough trouble keeping it at bay, without actually encouraging it to flourish !

If you haven’t done so already, now is when you need to give your lawn a spring fertiliser, and perhaps make a start at weed killing. We started our customers’ lawns in March (usually an early spring start for those living along the milder “banana belt”, from Nairn to Fochabers), and in April we tend to get going in Inverness and the surrounding area. Crucial in spreading lawn fertiliser is an accurate application. It’s easy for us as we have calibrated rotary spreaders, and I know some of you have little “trolley” spreaders. You have to be careful though as it’s all too easy to end up with “tiger stripes” of burnt lawn ! Lawn weeds are also up and running now and it is a good idea to get on top of them while they are young, and before they seed.

With the mower coming out of the shed now, it is a good time to check the blade, and if it is blunt or pitted, get it sharpened. A blunt blade chews the grass rather than cutting it, and will leave a ragged cut on the grass leaf causing bruising and brown tips, and making the plant more susceptible to disease. Also check the cutter height is not set too low, we recommend a cut of not less than 1” as it leaves a decent amount of leaf on the plant, allowing good photosynthesis to occur and a green and healthy plant. The most common problems we see are scalped, weak lawns with poor colour and the resultant bad moss. Now is a good time to aerate and scarify the lawn, especially if you didn’t get it done last Autumn. We tend not to scarify once new grass starts growing as we find it often takes too much of a hammering from a vigorous scarifying machine such as ours. We use a professional blade scarifier which cuts through thatch build up (the perfect habitat for moss to

flourish). This is a more rigorous process than simply raking out existing moss (which just grows back) as it actually removes the main cause of moss growth.

Aeration is good at any time and I know some of you will have forked the lawn (back breaking and ineffective). We use a big hollow-core tining machine as do the golf and bowling clubs. It takes thousands of cores out of the root zone easing compaction, improving ventilation and drainage and allows new root growth. If you have problems with moss and lichen this is one of the best things we can do for you.

Flourless Triple Chocolateand Orange BrowniesAfternoon Tea is very fashionable and proving very popular at

Knockomie and these Brownies are one of the varieties we bake.

They are always very popular. During the Summer sunny weather

we can serve Afternoon Tea in the garden, available between 3pm

and 5pm daily.

300g White Chocolate

75g Unsalted Butter

275g Dark Chocolate 70%

4 x Large Eggs

175g Caster Sugar

100g Milk Chocolate Chips

200g Ground Almonds

Finely grated rind of 1 Orange

Heat the oven to 190°C and you will need a 23cm x 33cm x 1.5cm

deep oven proof tin, lined with baking parchment.

Method

1. Break up 150g of white chocolate in a bowl with the butter and

place over a pan of barely simmering water to melt and mix

together.

2. Roughly chop the dark and white chocolate and place in a

clean bowl. Add the milk chocolate chips.

3. In a separate bowl beat together with an electric hand whisk the

eggs and sugar until light and frothy. Beat in the melted butter and

white chocolate mixture, and the grated orange rind.

4. Stir in the ground almonds and the chopped chocolate pieces.

5. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and place on the centre shelf in

the oven. Bake for 35 minutes until risen and firm to touch. Test with

a skewer to ensure it comes out clean. You might need to test

various sections to make sure you test the sponge not the choco-

late chunks!

6. Leave to cool completely in the tin. When completely cold, turn

out and cut in to squares. Indulge and enjoy!

You can substitute the ground almonds for self raising flour if you prefer.

Dreamingof...

Time can be limited in our busy lives today but taking a few days away can sometimes be all we need to recharge our batteries! For some a City Break may be the answer. There are a few good choices from Scottish Airports - one of the most convenient being the flight from Inverness to Amsterdam. A wonderful choice of Galleries, museums and colourful nightlife all a relatively short hop from home! Paris is another destination that never loses its appeal. The Champs Eysees, Arc de Triomphe and of course the Eiffel Tower are the obvious tourist stops but a wander through the Latin Quarter, St Germain and Montmarte gives you a real flavour of this beautiful city. This year is the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris so a wee side trip there will no doubt please the younger (and younger at heart) members of the family!

Athens is now within reach with direct flights from Edinburgh. The Acropolis, Temple of Athena & the National Archaeological Museum are all in the city and a trip to The Sacred Site of Delphi to see the Temple of Apollo would provide enough knowledge to get a Gold Star in any school project on Ancient Greece! The Plaka area of Athens with it's maze of narrow streets is perfect for browsing stalls selling pottery, jewellery and marble. Eating out here is mainly outdoors in the Tavernas specialising in Souvlaki (kebab), spanakopita (spinach pie) & Meze (greek tapas) all washed down with some surprisingly good local wine!

A short break doesn't need to be just a city however. More frequent flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow mean you can have a few days in the sun. Fly to Palma in Majorca - a wonderful city often overlooked - and you can combine a city and beach. Faro Airport makes the beaches of the Portugese Algarve easily accessable and Faro itself is not to be missed with some lovely churches and an old walled town overlooking the sea. The amazing nesting Storks all over the town are worth a visit alone! A bit longer onboard a plane will get you to Dubai which is perfect for a short break. A stay in some of the world's most elaborate hotels could be the ideal way to celebrate a special anniversary or birthday. Take a very fast lift ride up to the observation deck on the 124th floor of the world's highest building for remarkable views, shop in fabulous high end boutiques and the spice and gold souks or take a Dhow (boat) ride across the Creek - you can even Ski!

outdoorWILD TNATURENATUREThe Caledonian MacBrayne ferry eased away from the terminal at Lochboisdale, South Uist, on a warm, still, late June afternoon. Bound for Oban. Many of the passengers were on deck. the usual mixture of local people, delivery drivers and tourists, taking advantage of the warm sun and the views. A couple were close to me at the rail. They had been on the Uists for two weeks, walking and looking at wild life and, although they had seen a lot of birds, their one regret was that they had not been able see to an otter during their stay.

The Highlands and Islands are rightly famous for containing some of the last true wild areas in Europe and a rich variety of wildlife. Hardly a week goes by without close up images of Red squirrels or fishing Ospreys on the television and other media. So why had the couple on the rail not been able to realise their ambition of seeing a wild otter? After all, the Uists’ are one of the best places in Europe to see these animals. The answer is, of course, that the Scottish wilderness is a tough place to live, food can be scarce and the weather makes survival demanding. So wildlife can be thin on the ground and in addition wild birds and animals avoid or hide from the people trying to watch them –very annoying!

Back at the rail of the Cal Mac ferry, 50 metres away, an otter was swimming silently and low in the water, leaving a faint wake behind. I pointed it out to the couple and tried to show them, but by the time they had found their binoculars the otter had disappeared. Seemingly dissolving into the dark water as the ferry picked up speed.

Over the coming months I will share with you my experiences of spending time with wildlife and help you realise your ambitions, be they watching a wild otter fishing or just being able to see more and identify the birds around you on a weekend walk.

Mike Rae is a communication coach and has travelled the world watching and photographing wildlife. He returns regularly to the Highlands and Islands to continue his obsession of watching wildlife, especially otters!

Driving around any part of Speyside you will frequently see this amazing bird’s image adorned on sides of guest houses, hotels and local businesses. At present two of the most famous Ospreys have returned to their favourite nesting sites. The first is “Lady” from the Loch of the Lowes, Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve at Dunkeld, now in her 23rd year! And “EJ” at RSPB Loch Garten Reserve.
