WELCOME TO THE SOUTH COAST,
Get ready. Youre about to stimulate your senses...
The smell of salt air is the first clue that youve arrived in our lovely coastal com-munity. Permeating the air and mixing with the sweet smell of the ocean are the fra-grant ethnic foods and delightful seafoods, freshly harvested and prepared just for you. The food visual and mouth-watering savory will be hard to forget.
The restaurants in our cities and towns and the booths at our fairs and festivals all share in this expertise. The choices that we offer at these eateries and events are truly enormous. Trust me. Youll have a tough time deciding, but why rush? Wed rather you explore.
The sounds you experience are the crash-ing of waves, crooning of seagulls, and blowing of horns from fishing boats. And there is so much more to hear. Theater events, jazz and folk performances, symphonies, and music festivals await you here. All of them command your attention.
Sites that you will see here are truly wondrous, from battleships to whaling ships, museums to gardens, historical sites to parks, zoos to bike paths, and so much more. And lets not forget shopping! Our shops offer guests a collection of unique items for themselves, their homes, or that special someone. Is there another place that offers so much?
The fifth sense is all you. Maybe you will feel the sand on your toes as you walk along one of our many beaches. You might opt to put on some comfortable walking shoes or get ready for some exploring. Start by checking out our city and town profile pages or our beautiful center map. Plot your course. Youve arrived!

8The City of Fall River is located approximately 50 miles south of Boston in the beauti-ful Southcoast region of Massachusett s. Formerly a leader in textiles, the historic mill buildings still shape the landscape of our City. Similarly, we also recognize the importance of and promote emerging technologies as seen through the creation of our Life Science and Technology Park at Fall River, which is home to the Massa-chusett s Accelerator of Biomanufacturing. This new park abuts our two booming business parks which boast of widely recognized companies such as Blount Seafood, Matouk Linens and Phillips Lighting.
Sites such as Batt leship Cove, which houses the largest inventory of retired US Naval Ships, the Fall River Carousel and the Fall River Marine Museum att ract many visitors and locals alike to our waterfront. Also along our waterfront is the beautiful Heri-tage State Park, which has a great boardwalk perfect for a waterfront stroll and is the location of many summer events. Just north of the Heritage State Park you will find the Commonwealth Landing, which is a former mill building that has been converted to a mixed use facility and is the location of the only Jerry Remys Restaurant in the Southcoast.
Nothing compliments great cuisine like wonderful entertainment. Whether you are interested in an intimate concert at the Narrows Center for the Performing Arts, live theater productions by Litt le Theater or well known acts that grace our stages during summer concert series, Fall Rivers entertainment venues have something for you. Along with live entertainment the City also has a number of museum facilities and art galleries that boast of wonderful artifacts and inspiring talents. One of the more recent additions to our museum inventory is the Fall River Childrens Museum, which has many interesting and educational activities and programs that are known to keep children entertained for hours.

THE HISTORY OF NEW BEDFORD BY NEW BEDFORD WHALING NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
NEW BEDFORD
New Bedford is a vibrant city rich with history, culture, art, architecture and a community proud of its seafaring heritage. The city was once the whaling capital of the world and homeport to a fleet of hundreds of whaleships. To-day, its the nations top fishing port. The same streets, buildings, and harbor ares visited by the likes of Herman Melville and Frederick Douglass, preserve the stories of early settlers, whaling merchants, maritime workers, and the many people for whom New Bedford was both a port of entry and of op-portunity.

DOWNTOWN INFORMATIONOne of the pleasures of visiting downtown is to walk its cobblestone streets and look at its stately buildings, banks, and storehouses from New Bedfords whaling heyday. A visit to the many museums, galleries, restaurants, and re-tail stores is a perfect complement to your national park experience. Many historical and cultural attractions in the downtown area are open to the pub-lic, with some charging admission.
HERMAN MELVILLEIn 1841, Herman Melville sailed out of New Bedford harbor on the whaleship Acushnet. That whaling experience inspired Melville to write what many consider the greatest American novel ever writtenMoby-Dick.
HETTY GREENBy the time of her death in 1834, Henrietta (Hetty) Howland Robinson Green was recognized as the richest woman in the world. The Witch of Wall Street" invested the whaling fortune she inherited into real estate, railroads, and money lending.
FREDERICK DOUGLASSIn the hopes of finding work as a caulker on New Bedfords waterfront, Fred-erick Douglass arrived in this city in 1838 after escaping slavery in Maryland. He and his wife Anna stayed with abolitionists Nathan and Mary (Polly) John-son in their Seventh Street home.
UNDERGROUND RAILROADIn the mid-1800s, New Bedford was the whaling capital of the world. The success and global, exploratory nature of the whaling industry helped to create a bustling, cosmopolitan seaport community, and one of the richest and most diverse cities in the world. Opportunities for individuals and fami-lies from all backgrounds to make a living and prosper were readily available at sea and in the shoreside businesses that supported the whaling industry.
New Bedford was also attractive to slaves seeking freedom because of the opportunities for employment presented by the whaling industry, the active abolitionist community, and the coastal trading system that provided escap-ing slaves opportunities to hide on vessels heading to New Bedford from southern ports.

Welcome!
Youve found the most beautiful corner of Massachusetts, and my favorite place in the world: South Coast, Massachusetts.
The South Coast is renowned for its beaches, and on this corner of Buzzards Bay, ocean breezes remind you that the best stuff in life is free. But look just beyond the surface and youll find an area steeped in culture.
New Bedford played an integral role to the whaling industry and our storied past is preserved in world-class museums and historic sites; one of my favorites is Fort Tabor. The seafaring tradition continues with the city getting a nod as one of Yachtings 2012 Best Towns.
Today, the South Coast area is filled with unbelievably talented artists and musicians, and were beyond lucky to play home to one of the nations finest theaters, the Zeiteri-on. The Atlantic even named New Bedford the seventh most artistic city in America.
Theres never been a more exciting time to be a part of this ongoing renaissance. And no matter when you visit, youll find stunning scenery and a variety of community festivals and events.
Finally, I couldnt possibly talk about the South Coast without mentioning its world-class restaurants and bars. You may find me taking my mom out to dinner at one of the areas celebrated seafood eateries, or on date at any of downtown New Bedfords live music venues.
After growing up in New Bedford and traveling to six continents, I dont think theres a better place to visit or call home. On behalf of all of us who call the South Coast home, we hope you discover why we love this place so dearly.

Hello everyone, and thanks for your interest in our little corner of the Common-wealth. The SouthCoast is often called Gods country, and theres no doubt why; this region is home to beautiful and serene beaches, vineyards, and conservation areas. Im honored to call the SouthCoast my home, and Im thrilled to tell you about what we have to offer!
In addition to the natural wonders of the SouthCoast, this part of Massachusetts has an incredible set of entertainment, cultural, and historic attractions. There is truly something for everyone!
Bring your sense of adventure aboard one of the historic sea vessels docked at Fall Rivers Battleship Cove, the worlds largest collection of US naval ships. Settle in for a concert or performance at the Zeiterion Theater or the Narrows Center for the Arts. For you history buffs, learn about New Englands long relationship with the sea and its creatures at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The brave among us can visit the Lizzie Borden House and Museum. Too spooky for you? Try relaxing on Horseneck Beach or sipping a glass of wine at one of our fantastic vineyards instead.
Speaking of wine, for those of you who enjoy your food and drink, youre in luck! The SouthCoast has a remarkably vibrant restaurant scene. You wont be disappointed by deliciously fresh seafood, our multicultural twist on cuisines, and our many seaside bars and restaurants.
We have all this and more, but come see for yourself! Enjoy!

BATTLESHIP COVETheres nothing quite like Battleship Cove, the largest collection of historic naval warships in the world. The Cove includes the Battleship MASSACHU-SETTS, submarine LIONFISH, destroyer, JOSEPH P. KENNEDY, JR. and two PT boats, all of which are National Historic Landmarks. It is important to visit Battleship Cove to see first hand the sacrifices that our veterans so willingly gave so that we have the freedoms we enjoy today. Were coming up to some very significant anniversaries in the next couple of years and it is important that we reinforce these important events to promote patriotism and service to ones country.
FALL RIVER CAROUSELLocated on Fall Rivers spectacular waterfront, Carousel #54 of the Phila-delphia Toboggan Company has been completely restored to the original splendor of its early days at the historic Lincoln Park. Open seasonally to riders, this priceless relic is housed in an elegant Victorian-style pavilion and features four dozen hand-carved horses prancing to Wurlitzer organ music, hundreds of intricate carvings and detailed paintings of pastoral scenes.
FALL RIVER WALKING TOURSWorking with the Preservation Society of Fall River, Fall River Walking Tours offers walking excursions of the Underground Railroad in Fall River, historic homes, and the Oak Grove Cemetery where Lizzie Borden is buried.
IWO JIMA MEMORIALErected in 2005 at the Veterans Memorial Bicentennial Park off of Davol Street in Fall River, the Iwo Jima Memorial stands as a reminder of one ofWorld War IIs fiercest battles. In the month-long battle that took place on the eight square-mile Japanese island, more than 6,800 Americans and near-ly 22,000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives in that winter of 1945 battle. The statue is based on a February 23, 1945 photograph taken by Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosenthal. Of the six men pictured, five Marines and one Navy Corpsman, three of them-Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley and Michael Strank-all Marines, were killed just days after the flag-raising photograph was taken. The three surviving flag-raisers were Marines Rene Gagnon and Ira Hayes and Navy Corpsman John Bradley, who became famous after their identifications in the photo.
WESTPORT RIVERS VINEYARDSWestport Rivers Vineyards has more than 25 years under its belt produc-ing wines. Tours are available. Westport Rivers is perhaps best known for its sparkling wines, especially the Brut RJR, a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay which has been served at the White House, and their Blanc de Blancs, 100% Chardonnay aged seven years. They also produce a 100% Pinot Noir Ros, a Sur Lie style Chardonnay, an Alsatian style Riesling, and a Pineau de Pinot made from 100% estate grown Pinot Noir blended with their own eau de vie for a truly elegant dessert wine.

DARTMOUTHWhen Dartmouth was first settled in 1652, its history was that of an agricultural community, but, during the late 19th cen-tury, its coastline quickly became an attractive resort area.Situated between New Bedford and Fall River, Dartmouth also boasts spectacular river ways, harbors, and brooks, in addition to a beautiful and picturesque coastline. Theres plenty to see and do in Dartmouth, especially if youre into recreational adventures, including kayaking, canoeing, bik-ing, or trail walking. Numerous rivers flow north to south in Dartmouth, such as the Copicut, Shingle Island, Paska-mansett and the Slocum River, while Destruction Brook and Little River are divided in to sections.
There are even more activities if you prefer to travel by car. Take a ride out to the harbor, villages, or the beach, where youll find neat little shops, cafs, and farm stands. Also, if shopping is your thing, Dartmouth has a commercial dis-trict with easy access to Interstate 195.
ACUSHNETOriginally an agricultural community embracing the head-waters of the Acushnet River, the residential town of Acushnet has retained its rural atmosphere, while also providing a home for vari-ous industries. Through the 1800s, the town was the site of water-powered factories and boat yards; in the 1990s, the town hosted construc-tion, manufacturing, and agri/aquaculture industries. It is the original home of the Titleist golf ball.
Acushnet is a quiet friendly community with a popula-tion of 10,607 people, with many miles of winding, country roads. Residents take great pride in the towns schools, openness, and feeling of family. Each Fall, during the well-known Apple/Peach Festival, Acushnets growers, artisans, and the Historical Society welcome visitors from far and wide.

MARIONA delightfully residential town, Marion is described by its residents as having a rare natural beauty and charm. The small-town characterblended with the flavor and benefits of a seacoast commu-nity with modern conveniencesmakes Marion an ideal town for year-round liv-ing. Recreation opportunities are plenti-ful, and Sippican Harbor hosts a variety of waterfront activities, including fishing, pleasure boating, and swimming at the town beaches. There are golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and Tabor Academy periodically opens up its hockey rink to the public. Marions roots go back to 1679, when the area was first settled as a village known as Sippican in the town of Rochester. Roch-ester, Mattapoisett, and Sippicanwidely separate villages under the domain of Rochestergradually developed differ-ent interests and economies. These fac-tors led to independence for Sippican, which was renamed Marion in 1852 in hon-or of the Revolutionary War hero, Francis Marion. Today it has a stable year-round population that moderately increases in the summertime. Over the years, the heterogeneous population has worked hard to preserve Marions rich historic traditions.
FAIRHAVENA scenic coastal town on the shores of Buzzards Bay, Fairhaven shares its harbor with the famed seaport New Bedford. Historically, the town is linked with the sea, as early ship building began here in the 1700s. Even the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought off the shores and Revolutionary War-era Fort Phoenix still guards the harbor entrance. The present waterfront was developed during the height of the whaling days.During that time it was the home of Man-jiro Nakahama, the first Japanese person to live in America. Besides its nautical heritage, Fairhaven also boasts some of the most beautiful public buildings in New Englandgifts from Standard Oil millionaire Henry Huttleston Rogers, who grew up in town. The Italian Renaissance-style library, French Gothic town hall, English Perpendicular Gothic Unitarian Memorial Church, and the Elizabethan-influence high school are iconic struc-tures, designed by noted New England architect Charles Brigham. Fairhavens restaurants, featuring fresh seafood, New England specialties and ethnic cuisine are too numerous to list. There are two hotels in town and several bed and breakfasts, among other accom-modations. For those arriving by sea, a number of marinas are located along the coast. All over town youll find unique shops selling antiques, gifts, fine arts and crafts, locally manufactured hand-bags and chocolates, decorative home furnishings, and more. From outdoor concerts, fairs, and festivals (including an authentic Portuguese festa), to walk-ing tours, fishing, bicycling, and swim-ming at Fort Phoenix State Beach, theres a plethora of activities for you to enjoy while visiting Fairhaven.

The Town of Mattapoisett has a long and colorful history dating back to 1640. The name, meaning place of rest, comes from the Wampanoag language. For two hundred years the Village of Mattapoi-sett lay within the Township of Roches-ter, but in 1857 Mattapoisett petitioned and became an independent town. The long wharves at the waters edge, built from a local quarrys granite, serve as a silent memorial to the once thriving ship building industry on the shores of Buz-zards Bay. Shipyard Park, adjacent to the wharves, is the site of Jonathan Holmes dry dock where in 1878 the last whale ship to be built in Mattapoisett, the Wanderer, was launched. For many years the flagpole in the park was the mizzen mast salvaged from the Wanderer after it was wrecked off Cut-tyhunk in 1924. Across Water Street is the famous Meigs Tavern (now the Inn at Shipyard Park), built in 1800 by a shipyard owner Joseph Meigs. At the entrance to the harbor stands Neds Point Light, con-structed in 1837 by another shipyard own-er Leonard Hammond. To this day the light guides the way of returning vessels into Mattapoisetts busy harbor. Mattapoi-sett remains a thriving community with schools, churches, stores, restaurants, banks, a library, museum, and a variety of businesses. In the summer the Matta-poisett Harbor is filled with hundreds of pleasure crafts.
WAREHAMWareham, situated at the head of Buz-zards Bay, offers an exceptional location within easy traveling distance to the Boston and Providence metropolitan ar-eas. Boston is about one hour away and Providence is about 45 minutes away. All of the tourist amenities of the Cape Cod area are available in Wareham.
The town has over 54 miles of coastline enhanced by beaches, estuaries, rivers, and ponds that create a subtle contrast to a vibrant, growing community. The towns quality of life offers an excel-lent home for industry, but particularly a spectacular home for residents. From its early beginnings of farming and ship building in the 1700s, Wareham has evolved a diversified industrial and com-mercial economy with ample human and natural resources to support continued growth. Wareham offers a distinctive so-cial and economic mix from stately tech industry to traditional boat building.

TOWN PROFILES
WESTPORTWestport is a small town nestled between Dartmouth and Fall River. It was so named because it was the westernmost port in the Massachusetts Bay Colony when it was first settled in 1670 as a part of the town of Dartmouth. In 1787, the town, along with the town of New Bedford, seceded from Dartmouth. The town is now mostly residential, with a large farming commu-nity. A 15-minute drive from New Bedford, Westport serves up a mix of small-town feel and a family-friendly beach atmo-sphere. Westport is home to Horseneck Beach, the largest public beach in the South Coast chain. Many travelers find their way to this popular coastline attrac-tion by heading down Route 88 off of I-195. If you take this route, be sure to stop in the Westport town square and visit Part-ners Village store. Grab yourself a lunch at their cafe or a refreshing beverage to add to the cooler. Close by are other fine clothing stores and gift shops.
Travelers also have a more scenic option of heading through Dartmouth by way of Horseneck Road. Here you can explore some of the backcountry restaurants, as well as Gooseberry Island another an-other well-known landmark (during World War II, a coastal defense installation was raise on the island). Just across the Westport Harbor, be sure to visit the Back Eddy for a four-star meal and music on the water. Lunch or late dinner will surely not disap-point! If you love lobster, you may even get the chance to buy some fresh ones from local lobster boats. Feeling more adventurous? Westport has you covered. Explore the Westport River by kayak or paddleboard or venture to the local vineyards and brewery for some relaxation.

Sharing a border with the Atlantic, the South Coast has some of the freshest (and tastiest) seafood in the world. But the area is also known for its Portuguese cuisine, with a variety of eateries offering up new takes on traditional favorites. Dig into sea scallops straight from New Bedfords waterfront while enjoying beer and wine from local vineyards and breweries. In addition, for a night out on the town, theres an array of bars.
