    by Dave Wilcox

David Young is only a few years older

    than the prized Zinfandel vines

growing on the steep hillside west of

Paso Robles where his Minassian-YoungWinery is located, but the 30-year-old has

already spent almost half his life learning to

    make handcrafted wines.

Unlike so many other vintners who pursue

winemaking after succeeding in some other

career, Young knew from an early age that he

wanted to be involved in the wine industry.

Spending summers as a teenager working

as a cellar rat in Napa sparked an abiding

passion for winemaking that Young pursued

in college, earning a viticulture degree from

Cal Poly. Although he grew up in San Diego,Youngs parents met at Cal Poly and the family

maintained ties to the San Luis Obispo

    County area for 40 years.

While still attending the university in San

Luis Obispo, Young landed a job as assistant

winemaker at Norman Vineyards, only a few

miles down the twisting road from where he

would later start his own winery.

Thats definitely where I developed a lot

of my love for Zinfandel, said Young.

Young said he initially envisioned himself

growing grapes and then selling them, but he

enjoyed the satisfaction of being completely

    responsible for the finished product.

I liked taking something to completion,

rather than handing something off to a

    winery.

Young is intimately involved with all

phases of the winemaking process, from

    nurturing the vines to bottling.

I like being as much hands-on as I can

    with every lot.

By learning his craft through years of

working in all areas of a winery, Young knows

the end result is what matters.

As long as youre making solid wine a

maintaining its integrity into the bottle, th

    the main thing.

Fate and some heady real estate inve

ments helped Young become one of

regions youngest winery owners, insteadheading off to graduate school.

That was his plan, until Young was offe

the post as winemaker at Norman. It was

opportunity Young couldnt pass up. Afte

couple of years at Norman, the Beckett fam

put the old Peachy Canyon winery on

market. Young managed to buy the proper

thanks in part to those investments, a

    produced his first commercial vintage

    2004.

    Minassian-Young opened its tasting roo

a year later and the winery is now produc

about 3,000 cases annually. The expans

tasting room and its adjacent deck offer v

tors stunning vistas of the vineyard and t

Santa Lucia mountain range. Its hard

imagine a better spot to enjoy a late fall aft

    noon sampling wine.

The vineyard includes 10 acres of 27-ye

old head-pruned Zinfandel vines with n

plantings of Mourvedre, Syrah and Couni

    grapes. The Zinfandel vines are

    dry-farmed (theres no irrigation)

in the limestone-rich soils of Paso

    Robles west side.

We farm our grapes with an

    emphasis on quality and sustain-

ability, said Young. The Zinfandel reflects the

heritage of the west side, while

the Rhne-style wines that are an

    integral part of Minassian-

    Youngs program showcases the

varietals that are coming of age in

    the region.

Young notes that his wines are

    made with either estate-grown

fruit, or come from select vine-

yards in the region. About two-

thirds of the fruit used by Young

    comes from other growers,

mostly on the west side of Paso

    Robles. Blends are made with

grapes from a single vineyard, he

said, to reflect the unique quali-

ties of their particular soils and

    climate.

We really try to maintain the

    integrity of the vineyards.

    Young said he makes different

styles of wines, depending on the

varietal. I try to maintain a

    brightness in my Zinfandel.

    Other releases includes Viog-

    nier and Marsanne-Rousanne

    blends. The winery also just

    released its first bottling of

Carmels Gallery 21 will be one of the few locations to present

Eyvind Earles watercolors, originals and drawings in a trav-

eling world-wide art show in the spring. Many of the pieces

were sold-out and will not be seen again publicly. Today, Gallery 21

displays over 100 of Earles vibrant color images that celebrate nature.

Gallery 21 lends a new fresh ambience in the art gallery world

with white painted walls, soft curved edges and arched doorways,

which bring Earles colorful works to life. The gallery is light, airy and

appointed with colorful acrylic furnishings by artist Haziza. This

makes the rooms the perfect backdrop for Eyvind Earles creations.

Director of Gallery 21 Ioan Szasz is very knowledgeable aboutEyvind Earles amazing life story, from his birth in 1916 to his passing

in 2000. Gallery 21 has been in Carmel since 1991 and relocated to

its present location on Sixth Street in 2004. This is the same store

that Earle visited and in which he wished to have his Gallery.

Eyvind Earles first one-man-showing was in France at age four-

teen. Earle created his work from his imagination and memory. He

used every medium, including watercolors, etchings, lithographs,

serigraphs, drawings and sculptures. A bio of his amazing life and a

book of his 833 Christmas card designs, some dating back to 1938,

can be viewed at Gallery 21. Earles simplicity, color, style and detail

in his artwork are traits that make his pieces intriguing and inspiring

to his collectors. His interest in the metaphysical, the writings of

mystic teachers and his need to express his visual images to fulfill his

being can be viewed in his art.

Artists Audrey Lynne Cook and John Cody are also on display at

Gallery 21. Cook is famous for her graceful and elegant horse and cat

sculptures. As her mentor, Earles influence can be seen in Cooks

work. Cook also began at a very young age and had a father who was

a jewelry and photograph artisan. Cooks works include scripts in

ceramic, resin, stone and wood. She also fabricates wearable sculp-

ture with gold, silver and bronze.

Artist John Cody became intrigued by stone carvings while

working on an archaeologists Indian tribal ground excavation. Cody

creates free flowing, organic sculpture that he personally quarries

from the serpentine boulders of the San Rafael Mountains. Codys

combination of his carving methods and choice of stone create an

appearance that acquires a life of its own.

Gallery 21 is located on Sixth Street, between Dolores and Lincoln

in Carmel. Ioan Szasz is the Director. Call for dates of Eyvind Earles

Traveling Show. Artists John Cody and Audrey Lynne Cook will both

be featured in their own Gallery 21 shows. For information, phone

If youve driven over Highway 46 west-

bound, then you know Peachy Canyon.

The signs point to it and the Schoolhouse

vineyard that punctuates the rolling hills tells

you to whom it belongs. This was and is

Zinfandel country and Peachy Canyonwinery made a name for itself with the bold

flavors of Zin from its inception.

The Peachy Canyon schoolhouse is just

that actually, an old schoolhouse built in

1886 that housed the Bethel School. After its

service in the name of education, it became a

home and from there was transformed into

Peachy Canyons tasting room home. The

grounds are overseen by Princess, the 11-

year-old cat who was born on the property.

She greets guests as they enter with a friendlypurr or a rub on the leg as you head for the

tasting bar. The pale yellow walls, recently

painted, accent wood and tile flooring and

the quaint interior belies a very busy and

    hard-working winery family and their

employees. The Beckett family owns Peachy

Canyon and Josh Beckett is at the helm as

    head winemaker.

It is at the tasting bar where Peachy

Canyon shines, of course. Known widely for

Zinfandel from several different vineyards,Beckett also produces Cabernet Franc, Viog-

nier, Petite Sirah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvi-

gnon among others. Josh Becketts hands-on

style of winemaking gets everyone at the

winery involved. He takes suggestions and

hints from harvest workers in the vineyard,

tasting room workers, just about everyone

who comes into contact with the wines.

It wasnt always thus, however. Joshs

family was in the wine business, but he had

no desire to be. Running off first to San Di

to manage a surf shop, it wasnt until af

college and a hand in a few other careers t

Josh came back to make wine. Having do

so, Peachy Canyon now produces so

84,000 cases a year and has won countl

    medals as well.

The open spaces that surround the scho

house are as inviting as the tasting ro

themselves. With room for guests to ha

picnic lunches in the shadow of a beauti

gazebo beneath the local native oak trees,

view is one of vineyards as far as the eye c

see. The schoolhouse itself is a stroll ba

ward in time and the quiet grounds can h

you believe you are nowhere near a bustl

winery. Indeed, the winery itself is off pr

erty, allowing Peachy Canyon to foc

directly on their customers in this facil

Carina Cellars welcomes Jules Reuter to the tasting room for his

second show, and the first of the Winter Art Series at Carina Cellars.

After 23 year as a Visual Effects Editor for NBC and Fox Network,

Reuter was able to hone his visual skills and develop aesthetic sensi-

bilities. Then in 2004, after retiring from network television, Reuter

moved to Guadalupe on Californias beautiful Central Coast, where he

currently resides as a landscape and travel photographer.

Reuter finds himself particularly drawn to the landscapes of Cali-

fornia, especially the Guadalupe-Nipomo dunes. Recently though,

Reuter has begun to explore other areas of the world for their natural

beauty, which led him to spend a month in Tuscany, Italy. The result

of this trip is Reuters current exhibition in the Carina Cellars Tasting

Room, a collection of photographs of the Val dOrcia, which were

captured using a Leica D-Lux II camera. Reuters philosophy as a

photographer is that your negatives should be as close as possible to

what you print, which is why he uses minimal darkroom or

computer manipulation of his images. The vibrant colors and stark

contrasts presented in this show allow the viewer to experience the

beauty of Tuscany, as Reuter witnessed it himself.

    Hands-on Education Leads to

    Hands-off Winemaking at Carina Cellars

    by Mark Storer

Carina Cellars is young as Central Coast

wineries go. In 2002, owner David Hardee

and winemaker Joey Tensley began Carina

and set up shop in Los Olivos. The success has been

notable and it comes from the right place: Great

wine. Carinas wines include many Rhne white

varietals and the Viognier is among the most widely

purchased from the Central Coast. Joey Tensleys winemaking education is of the

hand-on variety. But hands-on for Tensley means

hands-off in the cellar. No oenology degrees, no

university classes, Tensley started with Fess Parker

in 1993. Working in the cellar and running the

mobile bottling line gave him the education he

needed to begin an appreciation and understanding

of wine. Like so many winemakers, Tensley knew

that the best way to learn how to make wine was to

    begin making it.

In 1996, Brian Babcock of Babcock Winery

and Vineyards hired Tensley as the assistant wine-

maker. I learned from Brian hands off wine-

making, says Tensley. Babcock stressed the

importance of the vineyard and his renowned

reputation as a thorough, focused and passionate

winemaker helped Tensley begin to learn to trust

himself and his own opinions and decisions.

Within two years, Tensley began to make his own

wine under an eponymous label while also

serving as assistant winemaker to Beckmen

Winery and Vineyards. Tensleys own l

produced 100 cases of wine, not quite enough

open a business on, but enough to give him

    experience he needed.

I like to let the vineyard speak for itself, s

Tensley. I cant make quality wine from medio

grapes. Its all about the resources. Those resour

include the great vineyards of Santa Barbara Cou

and it is there that Carina Cellars made its home

    Carinas award-winning wines have be

Tensleys passion for five years now and along w

long-time assistant, Lino Garcia, Tensley has mathat passion grow and thrive. Letting the viney

speak for itself has also allowed him to let his wi

speak for themselves. Tensleys old-world exp

mentation, like blending small amounts of Viogn

with the dark and bold Syrah grapes, has not o

won him lavish praise from sommeliers and w

critics, its provided wine consumers a taste of ne

world wine using old-world techniques. Fr

Carinas smoky and delightful Syrahs to the cri

clear Viognier, Tensley has crafted a niche of gr

wines at affordable prices in a stand-out fashion

    Hands-on education for hands-off winemak

has made Carina Cellars a unique brand on

Central Coast and Joey Tensley may well h

perfected a niche that has been known for so lo

in the old world and the new great wine begins

    W

hen Tom and Carol Hinkle first glimpsed the site where they

would eventually establish Rio Seco Vineyard and Winery, they both thought the same thing: It was a mess.

They saw more than a dozen or so abandoned cars, remnants of a

charred home, and chicken and pig pens. Then there were the bullet

holes piercing the walls of an old barn where authorities had busted

one of the areas largest marijuana-growing rings.

But as a professional baseball scout with more than 25 years expe-

rience, Tom Hinkle has developed his ability to witness potential that

    others might overlook.

He could look past the mess, to the site, and saw the promise and

so many possibilities, Carol Hinkle said of her husband.

    That promise has been kept.

Despite a schedule that keeps him on the road much of the year,Hinkle and his wife, a retired schoolteacher, have developed Rio Seco

into a respected winery that produces about 4,000 cases annually.

Thirty of the ranchs 64 acres are planted, with a little more than half

growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc. Hinkle

said after much investigation, he also decided to plant Roussanne and

Viognier as the winerys white varietals. Rio Secos blend of Viognier

and Orange Muscat is playfully named Rio Vio.

The Hinkles, who live a few miles south of Paso Robles in Atas-

cadero, knew they wanted to stay in San Luis Obispo County even

after Tom left his job in 1980 as assistant coach for the Cal Poly base-

ball team to become a scout. Hinkle, an All-American catcher signedin 1963 by the Detroit Tigers, is responsible for recruiting future Hall

of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith to Cal Poly.

Some sound investments enabled the couple to buy the 64-acre

spread on Paso Robles east side overlooking a dry creek (hence, Rio

Seco) in 1996. The site had been used to make a B-movie called The

Junkman, which Hinkle said is why so many beat-up cars littered the

    grounds.

They were bonded in 1998 and their initial vintages were made

under the direction of a consulting winemaker. But in 2000, the

Hinkles purchased winemaking equipment from Pesenti Winery

when it was sold to Turley Cellars. The decision to buy the equip-

ment, instead of paying a consulting winemaker, was empowering,

    said Carol Hinkle.

They were now in control of their wine from vineyard to bot

Hinkle scouts his grapes the same way he eyes ballplayers, look

for nuances that distinguish great fruit from good fruit. Like m

good winemakers, Hinkle believes quality wines are made in

    vineyards.

Once harvest is complete and the grapes are crushed, he isnt o

    to tinker.

Start with good fruit (and) keep it simple is the philosophy t

    guides his winemaking, said Hinkle.

The hard part of this business is farming, he said while walk

through the vineyard on a recent postcard-perfect morning. We re

    work to get quality fruit.

Rio Secos red wines spend up to 24 months in the barrel, th

another eight months to a year in the bottle, before their release.

Road trips provide Hinkle with plenty of time to mull ideas for

    winery.

Toms an idea guy, said Carol.

For the baseball scout, its all about the fundamentals: Good fo

good wine, good friends, all coming together in a beautiful spot.

who has assumed the day-to-day winemaking

    responsibilities from Consulting Winemaker

Daniel Gehrs, combines Old World traditions

with high tech savvy to get the most from thegrapes. My job is to allow grapes to showcase

their natural characteristics to let them

express themselves, she says. The wines are

produced at a state-of-the-art facility in

Buellton, but L&L is in the process ofobtaining permitting for a winery on its own

property in the Los Alamos Valley. Currently,

    approximately 20,000 cases of estate-bottled

wine are produced, with goals to double the

    output to 40,000 cases.

L&Ls grapes come from more than 400

acres in the Santa Maria, Los Alamos and

Santa Ynez Valleys of Santa Barbara County,

each of which runs from the coastal moun-

tains west to the Pacific Ocean, promoting a

pair innovation with affordability. Among them are Dolcetto, Malvesia

Bianca, Nebbiolo, Nebbiolo-Barbara, Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio, Rosato,

Toccata, Toccata Classico and Toccata Riserva. Representing

Mandolinas versatility and innovation are its Toccata (a Super-Tuscan

blend of Sangiovese and Bordeaux varietals) and its success with

Nebbiolo, Barbera and Malvesia Bianca, grape varieties rarely

produced in California. Under the Queen of Hearts label, offering

exceptional quality at incredible values, the winery produces

Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

The 2003 Lucas & Lewellen Cabernet Sauvignon Cte del Sol,

priced at $32, has won two Gold Medals and a Best in Class. An 8%

component of Syrah from the same south-facing vineyard provides a

spicy, slightly jammy note, while black cherry, currant and cassis

flavors dominate the palate. Lucas & Lewellen does a fine job with

Viognier, the classic Rhne Valley grape, grown on a small vineyard in

Santa Ynez Valley. The 2005 L&L Viogner, offered at $19, exhibitssubtle nuances of apricot, honey and grapefruit, balanced by a

pleasant spiciness. Mandolinas 2003 Toccata Riserva, priced at $32, is

another winner of two Gold Medals. This Super-Tuscan-style wine

blends Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet

Franc, producing rich and spicy notes of oak, wild berries and black

tea. Like the L&L Cabernet Sauvignon Cte del Sol, this wine can age

    for many years.
