    Waste Wise

    News

MARVELLOUS RESULT FOR CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY Last Friday morning the school joined in with the excellent Clean-Up Australia Day project that has been a feature of the national calendar for decades. This event was a part of our “Waste-Wise” school project. Everyone met in the assembly area and after a briefing about the importance of putting litter in the bin, recycling and especially being careful with plastics, each class was allocated an area of the school to clean. We met later and were amazed at how much “micro-rubbish” we collected. There were some bigger items too, including an engine block discovered by Room 11. The amount of plastics picked up was a real concern, making up over 60% of the rubbish. Unfortunately, many plastics end up in the ocean as seen recently in Bali. The clean-up demonstrated to the students why they shouldn’t litter. Let’s hope there is even less to pick up next time we do this. Waste Wise Committee

World of Maths We attended the ‘World of Maths’ incursion on Thursday 1st

March. We really enjoyed it. Read what some of the

    students thought about the experience.

On Thursday the 1st of March 2018, Rooms 12 and 11 went to an incursion at the library. We had to solve different mathematical board games, Rooms 12 and 11 were put into groups of three. I was with Emily Bowden and Summer Warburton, my friends. It was so hard to pick which game to play first because there were so many board games on the ground. We picked a game that was a race. Summer went with red, Emily went with green and I went with blue. Summer’s colour came first, mine came second and Emily came third. Half way through the lesson Mr Krajcar yelled at the top of his voice and said,” EVERYBODY BE QUIET!” Just before we left, Michael made us sit down and he explained that every night he feels upset that he takes money from kids each day, so he will give us $5 each. He had a contract and asked Mitchell to sign it. Michael took two $50 dollar notes out, then Mitchell signed it, but he didn’t read it and it said on the sheet that whoever signed the contract had to give Michael $5 dollars. Some people grabbed the contract and tried to rip it to little particles, but they ripped it up in little parts. We left the library all together in sadness that we didn’t get $5 dollars and then got back to class

    blaming Mitchell! By Bella

…..There were lots of maths puzzles. I was in a group with

Summer and Bella. One puzzle my group did was the bridge puzzle. There was a storm coming in 17 minutes and some people

that had to get across the bridge before the storm. There was only

one torch and someone had to hold the torch the whole time. Bella, Summer and I could get across the bridge in 18 minutes

    minimum.

The man running the World of Maths was very funny. His name was Michael. He showed us a magic trick where he made a cloth

disappear. He said he would give us five dollars each but we

needed to sign a piece of paper. Someone signed it, but it actually said we had to give him five dollars each! Luckily we didn’t

actually have to give him money. He taught us maths can be

FUN! Some maths puzzles my group played and liked were the ball one

where you had to flick a ball and add up the numbers you went

past. We also liked the one where you had to see which net would fit around the hamster cube. There were lots more fun games!

I had lots of fun at World of Maths. I hope they come again with

    even more fun games!

    By Emily

….I was in a group with Xander and Heath. When we were in our groups

    we went to the library.

When we got to the library we were told about the activities, then we got

to go do them. My favourite was the

puzzle where you had to make a square with the shapes we were

given. We had to finish all the

activities. When everyone finished we had to

sit down and we got to see a magic

trick. Afterwards we had to go back to class. By Daniel

……We had to form a group. In the group was Mark [me], Thomas and Claire. First the World of Maths guy had to tell us the rules, like if something fell on the ground you had to pick it up. After that we had to go and choose an activity. Our first activity was the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Our aim was to make a leaning tower. We got it 14 levels high before it fell. At the end someone had to sign a paper that said everyone gets five dollars, but it was a trick because it only applied on weekend days, so if it were on any of the other days we had to pay him 5 dollars. Then someone ripped it and he said you had to pay double if it got ripped. Then he did another trick. He had a piece of cotton in his hand and he closed his hand and then opened it again and it was gone. After that he explained that he had a fake thumb and he said he bought it from ebay for three dollars. Then we went back to our class. My favourite game was a bee hive game where you had to find a path through a bee hive. But you could only have a one block path, so no other blocks could fall out. I really liked that incursion because we got to play a lot of

    games. By Mark.R

….It was all about learning how you can

    make maths fun.

Before we left the classroom to go to the library we had to choose a group of

three. I was with Charlie B and Duke.

When we got to the library we sat down while Michael, who was the person

running it, explained the rules. Then we

got to choose a game and start playing it. The first game my group played was one

where we had to put a little wooden

person through all the doors and see which room he ended up in. My

favourite game was the one where you

had to try and get a little ball through a maze. When we had a go the ball got so

stuck Charlie had to use his pencil to

free it! At the end of the World of Maths Michael did a magic trick where he

made a hanky disappear and then

reappear. After that he said he would give us all

five dollars, but Mitchell had to sign a

contract. Mitchell didn’t read it and ended up paying him five dollars! But

then someone, who also had not read the contract, ripped it so we had to pay him

    ten dollars.

The World of Maths was very fun and my favourite part was when Michael did

the extremely cool magic trick that I still

didn’t get after he showed us. My least favourite part was when we had to pay

    him ten dollars.

……The first thing the maths guy told us

was the rules, like if you drop something on

the floor you had to pick it up. The first thing my group did was the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

I think the tallest height was 36 layers.

At the end he said if someone signed the

paper they had to give him 5 dollars. He also

showed us the disappearing tissue trick. The

things you need are 1 fake finger and 1 tissue. First you show everyone the tissue

then you cup your hands and put the tissue in

the fake finger. Lastly you put it on and do everything backwards and take the tissue out.

    By Thomas

……In my group were Thomas and Mark. Everybody in the school went on either Wednesday the 28th or Thursday the 1st of March First we went to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The challenge was to build the tallest tower we could. The tallest we could make the tower was only 14 blocks high. Next we went to the challenge were we had to make the blocks level and also spell a word. After the levelling blocks we went to the fishing challenge. The challenge was to sort the fish into two colours, green and blue, and then we could sort the fish from fat and thin, short and tall, then the challenge would decide how much the fish cost. Fourthly we went to the Ski Race Challenge. The challenge was to count how many flashes you could count before your ski person finished. The red skier was the fastest because his track had the least turns. After 2 hours Michael, the guy running World of Maths, called us to sit down in front of him and proceeded to do a magic trick. The trick was that he was going to hide his hanky. It turned out that he had a fake thumb and hid the hanky in that. Next he got Mitchell from our class to sign a contract saying that if you sign you get five dollars, but Michael was the only one who got five dollars. Next he told Will to rip the contract, but he got ten dollars if you rip the contract! By Claire

….It is where a funny man comes in with lots of fun maths activities. I was in a group with Tess and Maddie. First, my group went to an activity where there were lots of shape nets and only one net would cover the mouse. Then we went to an activity where there was a house and a small doll on some string. You had to thread the doll through all the door ways in the house and you could only go through one door once. It was quite hard. Then, we did an activity where there were lots of little fish and you had to slide them down a maze type game board where there was a handle to slide the fish in to sections of skinny or fat and blue or green. After that, we went to an activity where you had to put a small triangle thing with a tiny wheel on the bottom of it. You had to try to add up all the numbers that your triangle went past. It was so much fun. Then we went to this activity where there were lots of shapes and a place to put the shapes in to form an animal or a building. At the end, Michael (the guy who ran the show) did a funny trick with a handkerchief. Then he did a contract thing where someone got up to sign a piece of paper that said we would all get five dollars, but down at the bottom of the paper it said that we had to pay the man five dollars. It was a very good incursion. By Meg

    …My partner was Mitchell. When

we were in the library, Michael,

the guy who was running the

    maths incursion, introduced

    himself.

Michael told us the rules. The

rules were don’t spend too much

time at a game and that’s

    probably it. The first game

Mitchell and I played was a game

where you had to catch a fake

fish with a magnet on it with a

fishing rod, which also had a

magnet. What you need to do is

catch a fish then put the fish in a

    sort of obstacle course. Another

thing we went on is a sort of a

    racing game with three metal

    balls and three different one

    metre courses and the purpose

of the game is to see what metal

ball is going to get to the bottom

    first, second and third.

At the end of the incursion

Michael fooled us with a magic

trick with a fake finger, which

fitted him very well, and a

    handkerchief. So he had the

handkerchief in his hand and put

it up to his mouth and then he

hid it with his hand, then put it in

    the fake finger. He randomly

    chose me as a demonstration.

After that we went back to the

    class. By Tom B

……. I WORKED WITH HEATH AND DANIEL AND COMPLETED MOST OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT WERE THERE. SOME ACTIVITIES WE DID WAS WHERE WE BUILT BRIDGES OUT OF BLOCKS TO HOLD UP A BIG CUBE. ANOTHER ONE WAS WHERE WE HAD TO FIND THE RIGHT BLOCKS TO MAKE THE SHAPE, WE DIDN’T DO TOO WELL AT THAT. THE NEXT THING WE DID WAS WE HAD THESE THINGs THAT SLIDE DOWN A TRACK, SO WE HAD TO SAY GO, THEN PRESS A BUTTON UNTIL IT GETS TO THE END. THEN WHEN IT GOT TO THE BOTTOM WE STOPPED THE BUTTON AND COUNTED HOW MANY FLASHES IT TAKES TO SEE WHO’S ONE WON THE RACE. AT THE END THE WORLD OF MATHS GUY HAD A BALL GAME WHERE WE ALL HAD TO CATCH A BALL TEN TIMES AND WE WOULD GET FIVE DOLLARS. HE LIED AND GOT SOMEONE TO SIGN A CONTRACT FOR THE MONEY, BUT THE PERSON WHO SIGNED IT FORGOT TO READ IT FIRST AND IT SAID WE HAVE TO GIVE HIM FIVE DOLLARS INSTEAD! THEN HE DID A MAGIC TRICK WHERE HE HAD A PIECE OF CLOTH THAT HE MADE DISAPPEAR IN TO A FAKE THUMB. By XANDER

HOW TO GET CONNECTED Each parent has been or will be given their own secure login to Connect. If you have not yet registered with Connect, please send the school an email at [email protected] and we can issue a registration email to get you started. If you have multiple children you only need one login – even if your children attend different public schools. We hope that you enjoy the Connect experience and see it as an exciting new way for you to stay in touch with school information and events.
