YR4 Fiction Text Professor Weber by Joe Duffin

Let me tell you the story of an amazing scientist called Professor Lily Weber. She built robots and loved maths and science. She

loved the problem solving and puzzles of maths and she loved how science explained the workings of the world around her. As a child, her dream had always been to build inventions to solve problems and help the world. She learned how to build simple robots as a teenager, but as she grew into an adult, her inventions became more and more sophisticated.

Professor Weber’s primary ambition was to build a robot clone of

herself, that walked, talked and thought just like she did. She

wanted the robot to be so like her that even her own mother

wouldn’t be able to tell them apart! A robot clone just like Professor

Weber would surely be as brilliant as she was, and perhaps even

more accomplished and could help her with other important

inventions. Weber created many prototypes, none of which was

exactly as she hoped, but with each attempt, Weber moved closer

and closer to building the perfect robot.

On one memorable July day, Professor Weber finally accomplished

her goal. She had built the perfect robot clone. Everything was

perfect. The robot’s hair was long and blonde like Weber’s, their

faces, shape and voices were identical.

“I can’t believe I’ve finally built you!” sobbed Weber as she threw

her arms around Robo Weber.

The two Webers were instant friends and colleagues and did

everything together. They liked the same foods, same TV and loved

doing science projects. They even built a car that could drive by

itself. Unfortunately, after a few months had passed, the real

Professor Weber began to realise that she missed working alone

and having time to herself. That is when when Weber decided that

she would start asking her robot clone to do household chores

while she, the Professor, worked on challenging science projects.

However, just like the Professor, Robo Weber disliked doing

household. Like her creator, she wanted to do stimulating science

work, not clean the house they shared over and over again.

The robot clone became more and more unhappy, and the Professor

realised that by achieving her ambition, she had caused only

sadness to her creation and to herself.

Alone in her workshop one evening, the Professor reluctantly

reached a heart breaking decision. There was no room in the world

for two Lily Webers, so one would have to go. Calling Robo Weber

to her workshop, the Professor put her arms around the robot and

hugged her. Silently she removed the power pack from the robot’s

abdomen and the robot fell silent.

One day, thought the Professor …one day the world may be ready

for my invention. But not yet.

Sadly, she dismantled the robot clone, sighed and returned to her

scientific work.
