Evaluation Question 1~ Trailer ~

Convention: They highlight the best bits of the film, the very funny, sad, dramatic action etc

I followed this convention by having dramatic lines of dialogue which were important parts of the film. I also included pivotal scenes which show stages of the relationship, for example the happy scenes and ‘break up’ argument scenes.

I also challenged this convention because I included scenes of the central girl walking, not necessarily dramatic or interesting parts of the film, but does intrigue and draw in audience, as it keeps going back to clips of her walking. It also introduces the character.

Convention: We are not shown the story in narrative order

I followed this convention by using the scenes of the girl walking, the audience may question if the scenes show her walking away from him after the break up.

I also challenged this convention because it does show the relationship as it develops in order, and as it breaks down. However this helps the audience to understand the relationship between the two characters, and you begin to empathise with them.

Convention: They showcase the stars of the film

I used titles to introduce the characters, then displayed a clip of them after the actor’s name appears, therefore following this convention. This is important because one of the unique selling points of this film is the actors used, because they are quite specific to the romantic alternative genre. This will hopefully draw in the attention of the audience.

Convention: Some visual images stay on screen for only just enough time for our mind to realize what we

are seeing

I used an alcohol bottle/glass to follow this convention, the clip flashes on screen shortly. This leaves suspense and questions coming from the audience. I aimed to create an enigma, where the audience may be unsure about what the link is with the clip on screen, but entice them to watch more.

Convention: Conversations between characters usually consist of one line each

I only scripted single dramatic lines for the actors to say. This keeps the audience in suspense and doesn’t give away much. It also adds suspense and gives the audience a feeling of wanting to find out more. Therefore I followed the convention.

“That’s what I need you for.”

Convention: Unusual angles are often used to show events or characters

I also followed this convention by using a close up of the girls face, which was at an angle so half her face was in view. Again I used the view from above the girl, and behind. This keeps her secretive and unknown to the audience, seeming as an usual character.

Convention: Action is interspersed with credits on screen

I followed this convention because I used the titles to introduce each of the characters, then action would be interspersed. Following this, quotes come up and titles such as ‘From the director of 500 days of summer’. This breaks up the shots and helps inform the audience and back up the action on screen. It also addresses some of the unique selling points of the film, for example the director and actors/actresses.

Convention: Voiceovers are used to tell the story and give credit information

One of the most distinct aspects of my film trailer is the lack of voiceover and the minimal dialogue. I challenged the convention by only used titles and short sentences of important dialogue, to keep the story hidden and intrigue the audience. This is in keeping with the mysterious and ‘clouded’ theme of the film.

Convention: Music plays an important role in creating atmosphere

By using an emotive music track I followed this convention. The song builds up and I edited the shots in time to the beat so it follows the rhythm of the action on screen. When doing my audience research, they made clear that music is a very important role in the trailer.

Convention: The trailer builds to a climax, where it ends

I followed this convention by building up the shots to a climax, it quickens in pace and more dramatic shots are shown, then it ends on a slow clip of the male character. This creates suspense and ends the audience with a feeling of mystery.
