Learning from the past, life is a journey, through present to the hopes of a better future. With the onset of spring, its a new beginning, a new hope to realize our dreams. The unique Indian tradition and ideologies has gained interest worldwide. The dignified path set by our forefathers emphasizing

on simplicity and spirituality has always led us to attain a higher target. Let those values melt into the minds of whole India and stay together for a better nation.

As per the astrology based of Sun, the day in which Sun enters Aswini is Vishu. In malayalam calender this day is marked on Medam 1st and Keralites celebrate this day as NewYear. The blessings of Lord Sun increase the energy and inner strength for the whole living beings. The richness

of the harvest is totally submitted to God as an offering. Selfless service is an important concept in

most Dharmic religions. Because God is perceived as having a relationship with others, serving the needy people is indirectly serving God.

Indian tradition emphasis on importance of sharing, be it joy or riches. It is our responsibility to uplift the under privileged ones as far as possible. Sevadarsan has always tried to keep its priorities in track of such uplifts. As part of Vishu we had introduced Vishusevadinam and have been sending our Kaineettam to the inmates of various Bala/ Balika Sadanams back in Kerala. To those who dont have anyone to own or share the joy and sorrow, this amount that reach as the Kaineetam would be so special. It reaches them as the love and blessings from our part that gives a feel of attachment.

In 2011 social E Magazine, Sopanam was introduced to help promote the talents of its members. Completing three years of publishing, the kind of response that we received is overwhelming. The quality, variety and the range of subjects we deal with in this family magazine has undoubtedly contributed towards the diffusion of our rich tradition and culture worldwide. Sopanam is growing into a international magazine with creativity of the members as our foundation and the articles by eminent writers as value addition.

We should contribute constructively for the betterment of the expatriate society in Kuwait and stand together for the common cause that arises. Lets join together, and make this happen to develop a noble society through our seva attitude.

Even when the fuel is wet, it will dry as soon as you put in fire and get burnt as it is meant to. Kinship with virtuous people is also like that. Even when people are drenched(wet) with greed, they will lose their lust and anger in the fire of knowledge. Along with that they will lose their greed also and find happiness.

Integrated and Holistic Health:An Yogic approach

India's contribution to the world of medicine is immense and vast.Yoga and its philosophy plays an important role in the whole Indian tradition of Health. This philosophy advocates for the integrated and holistic development of our physical, mental and moral-spiritual aspects of being. The philosophy of Yoga is practical and applicable in our day-to-day living. Yoga has been documented to normalise physiological function and recent advances in the field of research have shown that it has sound scientific basis. In this article we are trying to analyse Yogic concept and Health.

Yoga understands health and well being as a dynamic continuum of human nature and not a mere state to be attained and maintained. The lowest point on the continuum with the lowest speed of vibration is that of death whereas the highest point with the highest vibration is that of immortality. In between these two extremes lie the states of normal health and disease. For many, their state of health is defined as that state in which they are able to function without hindrance whereas in reality, health is part of our evolutionary process towards Divinity. The lowest point on the dynamic health continuum with lowest speed of vibration may be equated with lowest forms of life and mineral matter while the highest point with highest speed of vibration may be equated with Divinity. The process of human evolution passes through numerous forms on the journey from the lowest to the highest. This journey is very well brought out in a verse from the Shivapuranam that describes the evolutionary journey from the non-moving state of rocks, grass, small plants and trees to the moving state of worms, various animals, birds and snakes up to the human state and finally ending at the divine state of sages and celestial beings. Hathayoga Pradipika, one of the classical Yoga texts gives us the assurance, One who tirelessly practises Yoga attains success irrespective of whether they are young, old decrepit, diseased or weak. He gives us the guarantee that Yoga improves health of all alike and wards off disease, provided we properly abide by the rules and regulations. (yuvaa vrddho ativriddho vaa vyaadhito durbalo pi vaa abhyaasaat

    siddhimaapnoti sarvayogeshvatandritah-Hathayoga Pradipika I:64)

YOGIC VIEW OF W.H.O DEFINITION OF HEALTH

World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being and not merely absence of disease or infirmity. WHO has also in recent times suggested a fourth dimension of spiritual health but has fallen short of defining it without confusing it with religion. From a Yogic perspective it is heartening that the WHO definition gives importance to well being that is a vital aspect of being healthy as well as feeling healthy. There is no use in a doctor telling patients that all their investigations are normal when the patients themselves are not feeling well.

This qualitative aspect of health is something that Yoga and Indian systems of medicine have considered important for thousands of years. The definition of asana given in the Yoga Sutra as sthira sukham implies this state of steady well being at all levels of existence (sthira sukham asanam- Yoga Darshan II:46). Patanjali also tells us that through the practice of asana we can attain a state that is beyond dualities leading to a calm and serene state of well being (tato dvandva anabhighata- Yoga Darshan II: 48).

Yoga aims at enabling the individual to attain and maintain a dynamic sukha sthanam that may be defined as a dynamic sense of physical, mental and spiritual well being. The Bhagavad Gita defines Yoga as samatvam meaning thereby that Yoga is equanimity at all levels. (yogasthah kurukarmani sangam tyaktva dhananjaya siddiyasidhyoh samobutva samatvam yoga uchyate Bhagavad Gita II:

    48) This may be also understood as a perfect state of health wherein physical

homeostasis and mental equanimity occur in a balanced and healthy harmony.

    YOGIC CONCEPTS OF HEALTH

Yoga is first and foremost a moksha shastra meant to facilitate the individual to attain the final freedom, liberation or emancipation. One of the important by-products of the Yogic way of living is attainment of health and well being. This is brought about by right-use-ness of the body, emotions and mind with awareness and consciousness. This must be understood to be as healthy a dynamic state that may be attained inspite of the individuals sabija karma that manifests as their genetic predispositions and the environment into which they are born. Yoga also helps maintain and sustain this dynamic state of health after it has been attained though disciplined self effort.

Structural aspects of the human being: Yoga considers that we are not just the physical body but are of a multifold universal nature. Concepts of pancha kosha(fivefold aspects of our existence) and trisharira (threefold aspect of our bodily nature) help us understand our multi-dimensional real nature where health and result from a dynamic interaction at all levels of existence. At the level of the gross body, Yoga and Ayurveda consider that the human body is made up of seven substances. These sapta dhatus are rasa (chyle), rakta (blood), maamsa (flesh), medas (adipose), asthi (bone), majjaa (marrow) and sukra (semen). Both these ancient health sciences understand importance of tridosha (three humors) whose balance is vital for good health. Health is further also understood as harmony of prana vayus (major energies of physiological function), upa prana vayus (minor energies of physiological function) and stability of nadis (subtle energy channels) with proper function of all chakras (major energy centres that may be correlated to the psycho-neuro-immuno- endocrine axis).

Tridoshas and health: The tridosha theory of health and disease that developed during the late Vedic period (circa 1500-800 BC) is common to virtually all Indian systems of medicine. Tridosha concept has correlation with pancha mahabhutas (elements of the manifest universe) as well as triguna (inherent qualities of nature). Health is understood to be the balanced harmony of the three humours in accordance with individual predisposition while disease results from an imbalanced disharmony.

Qualities of physical health according to Yoga: The Yogic view of health is that the first signs of entering Yoga are lightness of body, health, thirstlessness of mind, clearness of complexion, a beautiful voice, an agreeable odour and scantiness of excretions (laghutvam arogyam alolupatvam varnaprasadam svara sausthavam ca ganghas subho mootra pureesam Yoga pravrittim prathamam vadanti- Shvetaasvatara Upanishad: II-13).In the Patanjala Yoga Darshan we find an excellent description of the attributes of bodily perfection (kaya sampat). It is said in Vibhuti Pada that perfection of body includes beauty, gracefulness, strength, and adamantine hardness (rupa lavanya bala vajra samhanana kaya sampat-Yoga Darshan III: 47). The effulgence that is characteristic of good health is also mentioned when it is said that deep concentration on samana (energy of digestion) leads to radiant effulgence.

Qualities of mental health according to Yoga: Yoga not only considers physical health but also more importantly mental health.

The central theme of Yoga is the golden mean, finding the middle path, a constant search for moderation and a harmonious homoeostatic balance. Yoga is the unitive impulse of life, which always seeks to unite diverse streams into a single powerful force. Proper practice produces an inner balance of mind that remains stable and serene even in the midst of chaos. This ancient science shows its adherents a clear path to the eye of the storm and ensures a stability that endures within, even as the cyclone rages externally.Maharishi Patanjali tells us that we can gain unexcelled happiness, mental comfort, joy and satisfaction by practicing contentment (santoshat anuttamah sukha labhah- Yoga Darshan II: 42). This link is quite apparent once we think about it, but not too many associate the need for contentment in their greed for anything and everything in this material world.

Qualities of spiritual health according to Yoga: The Bhagavad Gita also delineates qualities of a spiritually healthy person in verses 1, 2 and 3 of chapter XVI. These include: fearlessness (abhayam), purity of inner being (sattva samshuddhih), steadfastness in the path of knowledge (jnanayoga vyavasthitih), charity (danam), self control (dama),

spirit of sacrifice (yajna), self analysis (svadhyaya), disciplined life (tapa), uprightness (arjavam), non violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satyam), freedom from anger (akrodhah), spirit of renunciation (tyagah), tranquility (shanti), aversion to defamation (apaishunam), compassion to all living creatures (daya bhutesv), non covetedness (aloluptvam), gentleness (maardavam), modesty (hrir acaapalam), vigour (tejah), forgiveness (kshama), fortitude (dhritih), cleanliness of body and mind (saucam), freedom from malice (adroho), and absence of pride (naa timaanita).

Relationship between food and health: Yoga emphasizes the importance of not only eating the right type of food but also the right amount and with the right attitude. Importance of not eating alone, as well as preparation and serving of food with love are brought out in the Yogic scheme of right living. Guna (inherent nature) of food is taken into consideration to attain and maintain good health. Modern dietary science of diet can learn a lot from this ancient concept of classification of food according to inherent nature as it is a totally neglected aspect of modern diet. We are what we eat!

Yogic methods to attain and maintain health: The science of Yoga has numerous practical techniques as well as advice for proper life style in order to attain and maintain health and well being. Bahiranga practices such as yama, niyama, asana and pranayama help produce physical health while antaranga practices of dharana and dhyana work on producing mental health along with pratyahara. A detailed description of these techniques and their benefits on health is beyond the preview of this lesson and will be discussed in detail in other lessons. It will suffice to say here that Yoga works towards restoration of normalcy in all systems of the human body with special emphasis on the psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrine axis.

In addition to its preventive and restorative capabilities, Yoga also aims at promoting positive health that will help us to tide over health challenges that occur during our lifetime. Just as we save money in a bank to tide over financial crises, so also we can build up our positive health balance to help us manage unforeseen health challenges with faster recovery and recuperation. This concept of positive health

is one of Yogas unique contributions to modern healthcare as Yoga has both a preventive as well as promotive role in the healthcare of our masses. It is also inexpensive and can be used in tandem with other systems of medicine in an integrated manner to benefit patients.

To live a healthy life it is important to do healthy things and follow a healthy lifestyle. The modern world is facing a pandemic of lifestyle disorders that require changes to be made consciously by individuals themselves. Yoga places great importance on a proper and healthy lifestyle whose main components are:

    1. Achar Yoga stresses the importance of healthy activities such as exercise and recommends asana, pranayama and kriyas on a regular basis. Cardio- respiratory health is one of the main by-products of such healthy activities.

    2. Vichar Right thoughts and right attitude towards life is vital for well being. A balanced state of mind is obtained by following the moral restraints and ethical observances (yama-niyama). As Mahatma Gandhi said, there is enough in this world for everyones need but not enough for any one persons greed.

    3. Ahar Yoga emphasises need for a healthy, nourishing diet that has an adequate intake of fresh water along with a well balanced intake of fresh food, green salads, sprouts, unrefined cereals and fresh fruits. It is important to be aware of the need for a satwic diet, prepared and served with love and affection.

    4. Vihar Proper recreational activities to relax body and mind are essential for good health. This includes proper relaxation, maintaining quietude of action- speech-thoughts and group activities wherein one loses the sense of individuality. Karma Yoga is an excellent method for losing the sense of individuality and gaining a sense of universality.

Let us take the resposibility of our own health, and use the Yogic concepts of Integrated and holistic apprach keep oueselves healthy.

    UNLEASH YOUR BRAIN POWER

Research studies had revealed that brain utilization by

most of the people are limited to 4%. The main cause of

this under-utilization of brain power is because of the

specific assignment of the tasks between the Left-Brain

and Right-Brain. The assignment is as shown in the picture.

While performing any tasks with logic, analysis, mathematics, etc; the Left-Brain is dominated and the Right-Brain is idle. Whereas while listening to music, drawing a picture, dreaming, etc; the Right-Brain is dominated and the Left-Brain is idle.

This partial utilisation of the brain is limiting ones performance. We can improve our performance in any walk of our life by consciously using the Whole-Brain.

Result of Whole-Brain Process is multifold:

    1. One will become Creatively Effective and Effective Creative 2. Transforms the Thinking Style : Dominos Thinking (Linear Thinking) to Out-of-the-Box Thinking (Lateral Thinking). Linear

Thinking will limit our imagination & creativity and hence our career development and progress; whereas Lateral

Thinking has poses no boundary for our imagination & creativity. Recent surveys says that Outstanding Performing

Leaders in every field is practicing and encouraging other to practice Lateral Thinking.

Mind map is one of such tools which can activate Whole-Brain Process.

    Introduction to Mind Map

A Mind Map is a powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlock the potential of the brain. It harnesses the

full range of cortical skills word, image, number, logic, rhythm, color and spatial awareness in a single, uniquely powerful

manner. In so doing, it gives you the freedom to roam the infinite expanses of your brain. The Mind Map can be applied to every

aspect of life where improved learning and clearer thinking will enhance human performance.

When you use Mind Maps on a daily basis, you will find that your life becomes more productive, fulfilled, and successful on

every level. There are no limits to the number of thoughts, ideas and connections that your brain can make, which means that

there are no limits to the different ways you can use Mind Maps to help you.

Originated in the late 1960s by Tony Buzan Mind Maps are now used by millions of people around the world from the very

young to the very old whenever they wish to use their minds more effectively.

    Applications of Mind Map

As with other diagramming tools, mind maps can be used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to

studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.

Mind maps have many applications in personal, family, educational, and business situations, including note-taking,

brainstorming (wherein ideas are inserted into the map radially around the center node, without the implicit prioritization that

comes from hierarchy or sequential arrangements, and wherein grouping and organizing is reserved for later stages),

summarizing, as a mnemonic technique, or to sort out a complicated idea. Mind maps are also promoted as a way to collaborate

    in color pen creativity sessions.

Mind maps can be used for:

    memory enhancement/ retention

    brainstorming/ problem solving

    planning and scheduling the activities

    outline/framework design

    structure/relationship representations

    anonymous collaboration

    marriage of words and visuals

    individual expression of creativity

condensing material into a concise and memorable format

team building or synergy creating activity

    enhancing work morale

In addition to these direct use cases, data retrieved from mind maps can be used to enhance several other applications, for

instance expert search systems, search engines and search and tag query recommender. To do so, mind maps can be analyzed

with classic methods of information retrieval to classify a mind map's author or documents that are linked from within the mind

    map.

What do you need to make a Mind Map?

Because Mind Maps are so easy to do and so natural, the ingredients for your Mind Map Recipe are very few:

    Blank unlined paper

    Colored pens and pencils

    Your Brain

    Your imagination!

Procedure for Preparing a Mind Map

There is a seven step procedure to prepare a mind map:

    1. Set your purpose for Mind Map. 2. Start in the center of blank paper turned sideways; i.e.

    landscape position.

    3. Quickly sketch an IMAGE of your focus in the center. 4. Use at least 3 colors for emphasis, structure, texture and

    creativity.

    5. Draw curved lines radiating from center (thick to thin) connecting main branches to central image and at each

    level.

    6. Use 1 KEY WORD or IMAGE per line for more power and flexibility in thinking.

    7. Use images throughout, as a picture paints a 1000 words.

Physical Activities to activate the Whole-Brain Process

There are few physical activities which can be practices to activate the Whole-Brain Process.

    - Do the things (or at least start thinking) in unusual manner. - Consciously use the other part of the brain. - Do physical exercise which involves both parts of the brain.

    Examples of Mind Maps

reshmy KrishnakumarQuestions1. Who wrote the travelogue The Emerald Route? 2. In the Ramayana, who was the son of King Aja and his wife Indumati? 3. Which is the national tree of India? 4. By what name is singer Harjeet Singh Sehgal better known? 5. In which year did Bhopal gas tragedy took place? 6. According to the Hindu mythology, who was born from the navel of Vishnu? 7. The start and finish points of which race are Hopkinton and the Back Bay area? 8. What is the main colour used in the Warli paintings? 9. What was known as Indian saffron in the medieval period? 10. A haunting smell that infuses the entire home which is drawing us to the store room, without an ambiguity where the Jackfruit is stored. An odor of chill air always rests in the room and the environment.

The month April is the time of Vishu, the Malayalam New Year Day that is the first day in

the Malayalam month of Medam, which is the season of jackfruit. Jackfruit is the integral part of Vishukani preparation. Grandma used to tell us that was the right time to have the fruit clipped off the tree to be ripened in the store room.

We kids could always lend a helping hand in the deseeding operation of Jackfruit. While deseeding process Grandma used to scold us with bulging mouth of Jackfruit flesh and seed. However, eating

the flesh before it was dispatched to the kitchen

    was really enjoyable.

My Grandma used to prepare verify of tasty traditional cuisines with Jackfruit, from which I would like to introduce one dish for all of you:

    CHAKKA KUZHACHATHU COOCKED JACKFRUIT

    Ingredients:-

Chakka chula/Jackfruit flesh (raw) - 500 gms [Note fully ripened]

Grated coconut - 1 cup, Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp, Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp, Green Chilly - 2-3 , Garlic - 3 cloves, Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp, Coconut oil - 2 tsp., Curry leaves, Red Chilly - 1, Salt to taste

    Method of preparation:

Cook cleaned and sliced Chakkachula / Jackfruit flesh with 2 cups of water and salt to taste, for 15

    ~20 minutes until cooked.

Meanwhile Grind grated coconut , mixed with turmeric powder , cumin seeds, green chilly and garlic to a coarse paste, by adding little water.

Combine the coconut paste with the cooked jackfruit and mix it well using a wooden spoon. Add salt if needed.

Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When they pop up add dried red chilies and curry leaves. Pour it over the jackfruit-coconut mix. Then serve warm ,,,, very tasty with Kadukumanga.

    Health Benefits of Jackfruit

Immunity: Jackfruit contains an excellent source of Vitamin C & antioxidants. It increases immunity to protect against common diseases like cough, cold and flu.

Energy: Jackfruit contains high amount of carbohydrate and calorie; and it has no cholesterol content. Thus jackfruit makes more safe and healthy food.

make it highly beneficial to protect from colon,

    lung and oral cavity cancer.

Maintain Blood Pressure: Jackfruit contains good amount of potassium which is required to maintain sodium level. Also high potassium is required to maintain fluid level i.e. to balance electrolyte. Thus

it helps to lower high blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

A few grains of riceThis story is about a great Saint called Ramana Maharshi. One day, as

Ramana Maharshi was strolling in his Ashram, he noticed a few grains of rice lying on the ground near the kitchen. He immediately started collecting all the grains. Seeing that the Saint was carefully picking up the few grains, His devotees were surprised and gathered around Him. They could not believe that the great Saint, who had left His home and worldly ties for the sake of God, cared so much for a few grains of rice. Finally, one of His devotees had the courage to ask Him, Gurudv, we have many bags of rice in the kitchen. Why do you take the trouble to pick up these few grains?"

The Saint replied, "You see only these few grains of rice, but try to see what has gone into these grains. The hard work of the farmer, whoploughed the field and sowed the seeds, the water of the ocean, the clouds and the rain, the cool air and the warm sunshine, the soft soil and the rice plants. All these have gone into these grains. If you understand this, you will see the hand of God in every grain. So, do not waste them or crush them under your feet. If you do not want to eat them, give them to the birds."

Moral: How many times do we waste things like water, food, paper, etc., that we feel are unimportant! Next time before wasting things or not taking care of what we have, we can remember this story and see the presence of God in all creation.
