of giving and culture of art in heart. Therefore, in every piece of art and

culture exhibited here at Somang Gallery has an engraving of our sharing

heart and soul. This is engraved in every donor’s heart, every artist’s world

and above of it all, in every one’s heart who’s here to join us today.

소망갤러리는 기부문화와 문화예술의 세계를 접목하고자 하는 간절한 소망의 마

음을 바탕으로 시작되었습니다. 그렇기에 소망갤러리에 전시되는 모든 문화, 예술

품엔 나누고자 하는 귀한 소망의 마음과 혼이 새겨 있습니다. 소장자의 기부하는

마음속에, 작가의 세계 속에, 또 무엇보다 소망 갤러리에 참가해 주시는 모든 사람

들의 마음속에 새겨 있습니다.

Greeting 인사의 말씀

작은 소망이 씨앗이 되어 마침내 ‘소망 갤러리’라는 큰 결실을 맺게 됐

습니다. 이 프로젝트에 동참해 주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

캠페인을 시작한지 얼마 안됐는데도 많은 미술품과 골동품, 공예품 등

이 갤러리에 답지해 행사를 주관하는 소망소사이어티로서도 무척 놀랐

습니다. 한인사회의 유명인사들은 물론 저희 취지에 공감하는 각계각층

의 한인들이 적극적인 호응을 보여줘 전시회 개최가 가능하게 되었습니

다. 특히 한국서 이종국 작가와 신옥균 화백도 동참의사를 밝혀 더욱 힘

이 납니다.

시작은 참으로 우연이었습니다. 지난해 여름 40년 넘게 살고 있던 집을

처음으로 수리하면서 집 곳곳에 먼지를 잔뜩 뒤집어 쓰고 앉아있던 제 개

인 소장품들을 발견하게 되었습니다. 기증받거나 구입한 그림과 글씨, 병

풍과 장신구 등 값나가는물품들이 적지 않았습니다. 그중 백자는 450년

이나 되는 문화재급임을 뒤늦게 알게 되었습니다.

이처럼 귀한 소장품들을 그냥 방 한 구석에 썩히고 있었다니 나도 참 재

미없는 삶을 살았구나 하는 뒤늦은 후회가 불현듯 들기도 했습니다. 나

와 비슷한 가정이 적지 않을 것 같았습니다. 이들이 내놓은 소장품들을

한데 모아 전시회를 열면 어떻까 하는 생각이 스쳤습니다. 주변 지인들

과 상의해 보니 의외로 반응이 컸습니다. 그래서 생각해 낸 것이 ‘생명살

리기 갤러리’였습니다.

현금이 아닌 소장품을 기증받아 이를 판매, 수익금 전액을 어려운 사람을

위해 쓰자는 것입니다.

돈의 용처는 참으로 많습니다. 의료보험이 없는 빈곤층의 싱글맘 돕기에

서부터, 아프리카 주민들을 위한 구호 프로그램 등 생명이 위협받고 있는

지구촌 곳곳에 희망과 용기, 그리고 꿈을 심어주고 싶습니다.

처음은 작은 시작에 불과하지만 앞으로 해를 거듭할수록 더욱 풍성한 갤

러리로 꾸려가게 되기를 기대합니다.

행사를 위해 불철주야 사랑의 수고를 아끼지 않으신 소망소사이어티 공

동위원장 마동환, 차원경 선생 그리고 스태프들과 봉사자들, 특히 전문적

인 자문과 많은 도움을 아끼지 않으신 로스앤젤레스 한국 문화원 김재원

원장님과 UCI, Joseph S. Lewis III 예술대학장께 감사를 드립니다.

무엇보다 소장품들을 선뜻 내어주신 분들께 진정으로 고마움을 전합니다.

Last summer I was working on some extensive home improvements, many of

which were long overdue from the four decades I have lived there. While shuffling

things here and there, I came upon a large collection of paintings, calligraphies,

embroidered screens and craftworks which had for a very long time been quietly

stored away.

One piece in particular, a white porcelain dating from the Yi Dynasty was later

estimated to be over 450 years old. Reflecting on its history, I came to regret

that I had allowed these treasures to be cloistered away for so long and gone

unappreciated. I felt guilty that my custodianship had failed to value these works

of art.

I have been very fortunate in my life, and this episode reminded me that comfort

can allow things to fall into neglect. This exhibition is an attempt to do some justice,

to bring together for the display and sales a collection of Korean artworks and to

have those procedes go toward the benefit of people who are victims of neglect; in

particular the children of Africa, and medically uninsured single mothers.

We wish that the efforts of the Somang Gallery will instill hope, courage and help

bring people’s dreams alive.

On behalf of the Somang Society, I would like to express great appreciation to

the generosity of effort and treasure that was donated by the Korean American

community to make our exhibition come to life.

Thanks to you, the Somang Gallery art exhibition has blossomed into an endeavor

that has far surpassed its initial humble vision.

It must also be emphasized that it has required a genuine community wide

effort to assemble such a large collection consisting of hundreds of pieces. This

exhibition represents the contributions of a generous and vibrant Korean American

community, not merely the donations of a few select benefactors. Two Korea’s

famous artists, Mr. JONGKUK LEE and Mr. OK-KYUN SHIN, also donated their

work to help raise funds.

In closing I would like to give special thanks to Mr. Jae Won Kim, director of the

Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles, and University of California Irvine Art Center

for their invaluable advice and collaboration.

I am also very grateful to all the staff and volunteers, especially Mr. DAVID T. MARH

and Mrs. Won-Kyung Cha whose co-chairmanship of the Gallery made this charity

event a great success. With all of your continued support, I am certain that our

exhibition will continue to grow in the many years to come.

I am honored and pleased to have this wonderful event, “Somang Gallery”,

which was put together with warm hearts at our Korean Cultural Center.

This event came about as a result of your concern and support. Your

collections and the buried treasures that you donated were a big part in

making this event possible.

In particular, the Somang Society put together various programming for the

elderly like today’s event, “a beautiful like, a beautiful finish.”

Through this event, everyone will have a place in their hearts of the wonderful

memories and lives of the seniors by witnessing the beautiful culture of giving

joy.

It is not easy to help others but this meaningful event will show that sharing

love is natural.

Furthermore, I thank all the members of the Somang Society, contributors for

making this show possible, and especially extend my appreciation to BoonJa

Yoo, president of the Somang Society.

Through this event, I hope that everyone will be able to take away with them,

sharing your heart with others who need help.

아름다운 마음이 깃든 멋진 전시회를 저희 LA한국문화원에서 개최하게됨을 기

쁘게 생각합니다.

이번 소망갤러리 전시는 많은 분들의 관심과 지원으로 이루어졌습니다. 소중히

간직하고 있던 작품에서부터 집안 깊숙히 묻혀있던 소장품들을 도움이 필요한

이웃들을 위해 기꺼이 기부를 하여 이번 전시를 개최하게 되었습니다.

특히 소망소사이어티는 연장자를 위한 다양한 프로그램을 진행하면서 “아름다

운 삶 아름다운 마무리” 라는 행동을 이번 행사를 통해 직접 보여주고 있습니다.

연장자들의 삶 속에 아름다운 기부문화가 접목되어 기쁨과 소망을 나누어 줄 이

번 소망갤러리 행사는 모두의 기억과 가슴속에 자리잡을 것입니다.

남을 돕는 일이 쉬운 일은 아니지만, 그리 멀리 있지도 않습니다. 이번 나눔의

사랑을 보여주는 뜻깊은 행사에 많은 관심을 보여 주시기 바랍니다.

살면서 벌려놓은 이런저런 일들, 만나 얽힌 이런저런 인연들, 꿈과 현실

사이에서 꽤나 마음 씀이 지극했던 일들 모두를 다듬어 끝내 줍니다. 몸

의 아픔조차 죽음은 더 우리를 괴롭히지 않도록 해 줍니다. 죽음은 그

러한 의미에서 실은 축복입니다. 그것은 삶에 주어지는 위로이고 안식

입니다. 죽음이 없었다면 어쩌면 삶은 사뭇 지저분하게 끝없이 이어졌

을지도 모릅니다.

그러나 죽음이 누구에게나 이렇듯 고운 마무리나 따뜻한 안식으로 이르

지는 않습니다. 모든 삶의 과정이 그랬듯이 죽음도 삶이 반드시 만나야

할 ‘삶의 현상’이라면 우리는 이를 위한 준비를 하지 않으면 안 됩니다.

벌려 놓았던 일들도 추스려야 하고, 만난 인연에서 겪은 미움과 사랑도

결 곱게 빗어야 합니다. 스스로 속을 태우며 한스러웠던 일들도 걷어야

하고, 몸의 아픔도 담담하게 받아 들여야 합니다. 그럴 수 있는 준비를

하지 않으면 죽음이 축복일 수가 없습니다.

그런데 그 준비 중에 자칫 놓치기 쉬운 것이 있습니다. 마음 다짐도 몸

가꿈도 잊지 않으며 살면서 지녔던 살림도 정리 해야 한다는 사실을 잊

을 수가 있습니다. 생각해보면 우리 누구나 참 애쓰면서 살아왔습니다.

살려니 마련해야 할 것도 많았고, 또 살자니 예쁜 것, 귀한 것, 편한 것을

찾으면서 참 많은 살림을 장만하며 살았습니다. 그러다보니 모은 재물

도 꽤 되고, 귀한 것들도 적지 않습니다. 그러나 죽음은 이제 그러한 것

들이 죽음과 더불어 적어도 내게는 쓸 모 없는 것일 수밖에 없다는 것을

가르쳐 줍니다. 그렇다면 우리는 삶을 마무리하는 마지막이 이르기 전

에 서서히, 그리고 경우에 따라서는 서둘러, 이 살림들도 다 정리해야 합

니다. 물론 내가 죽으면 그 모든 것이 ‘남의 것’이 되니 내가 치우지 않아

도 된다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그렇습니다. 그렇게 됩니다.

하지만 만약 내가 아직 죽기 전에, 죽음을 예상하면서, 이 살림들을 잘

손질해서 필요한 사람들에게 주고, 또 그것을 할 수 있으면 팔아 어려운

이웃들을 위해 사용할 수 있게 한다면, 우리는 내 ‘죽음 맞이’를 아주 가

볍고 즐겁게 할 수 있을 것입니다.

생각해보면, 죽음을 앞두고 되돌아 보면, 참 많이 가지고 살았습니다. 그

저 축복이라고 말하기에는 부끄러울 만큼 욕심스럽게 살았는지도 모르

겠습니다. 죽음을 진정으로 축복이게 하려면 이제는 이 모든 것에서 놓

여나야 합니다. 담담하게 자유로워야 합니다. 소탈하게, 담백하게, 그리

고 어쩌면 그래서 순수하게 살다 죽음을 맞이해야 그 죽음이 바로 우리

가 진정으로 바라는 평화로운 안식의 죽음이 될 것입니다.

홀로 이러한 결단을 하기는 쉽지 않습니다. 그런데 뜻이 맞는 사람들이

더불어 함께하면 즐겁고 행복하게 이 일을, 곧 살림을 잘 처분하면서 이

루는 죽음준비를, 할 수 있습니다.

소망소사이어티에서 하는 이번 생명살리기 소망 갤러리 행사에 우리 즐

겁게 참여하면서 우리의 죽음준비를 할 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다. 이제

까지 애지중지하던 것들을 내놓아 이웃을 위한 사랑을 실천하면서 내

죽음을 진정한 축복의 계기로 만들었으면 좋겠습니다. 우리는 이를 실

천할 수 있습니다. 이미 익숙하게 죽음을 준비해 왔기 때문입니다.

Death complete life.

It refines and completes all the things of our daily unfinished assignments, entangled

relationships and the things we cherished the most in realty and in our dreams. Death

prevail even our worst physical ailment. In that essence, death is actually a blessing.

Death is a comfort and rest given to our lives. Without it, we might have to continue our

unending, restless life forever.

But, not everyone perceives death as this beautiful thing or welcoming resting place.

Like every step of one’s life we should prepare it if it’s part of our life. We should

recollect our unfinished projects, straighten our hatred and love from our encounters

in our life. We should let go of our worst regrets and calmly accept even our sickness.

Death can never be a blessing without that process.

In doing so, there are things that we should remember which we often forget. One of

them is that we forget to organize and clean out our households as we organize our

body and mind. Thinking back on my life, we all truly strived our best in life. We needed

and wanted many different things and household items for many different reasons

and routes. Hence, I find that I have accumulated quite a few treasures and precious

antiques in my house. However, death teaches me that these things will all be no use

to me when I’m not here on this earth. If so, we should gradually prepare for this before

the ultimate ending

comes so that we don’t have to hurry at the last minute. Of course, some might think

that there is no worry once they are here anymore since everything will go to somebody

else anyway.

But, what if I can contribute all the proceeds from selling all these in advance to our

needy neighbors or fix them to donate to our neighbors while we organize our life

before it ends. We can probably ‘welcome our end’ very lightly and joyfully. Looking

back at my life before it ends I think I had so much in life. It might be even more than

just blessing but more like embarrassing greed. If I wanted death to be a blessing to me

I should free myself from all these. Serene freed. Humbly, clearly and maybe that will

bring me a truly peaceful and resting ending that I can welcome with a pure heart.

It won’t be an easy decision to doing all this all by myself. We can do this together

happily and joyfully with other people whom share the same philosophy to prepare

one’s death through clearing out our unused household collections.

I’d wish that we can all participate joyfully together in Somang Society’s philosophy

and prepare for our beautiful end. I wish that I can turn my own end into something

beautiful and blessing by donating my own treasures and collections in caring my

neighbors. We can do this. Because we are already well on our way for preparing

death until now.

I’d like to sincerely congratulate this ‘Life Restoring Somang

Gallery’. I’d like to send my deepest respect, trust and love

to Somang Society as one of ‘Welfare Worker’ as they now

even endeavor into life restoring campaign along with their

strive to help Korean American citizens to prepare for their

ultimate end of beautiful life.

Somang Society has touched many Korean charity foun-

dations here in California last year by donating more than

100 wells which was over their original number of goal to

a remote area of Chad, Africa where people’s lives were

threatened by not having clean water.

I can’t express well enough how deeply I am touched this

time again by their bold and decisive action toward open-

ing this ‘Life Restoring Gallery’ after their well project in

Africa last year.

In fact, many of us can only think of holding some kind of

‘Baja’ sales when we try to help others. We, then, believe

that we delivered our responsibility by just donating few

pieces of clothes or used house goods. So, I send my big-

gest applaud to Somang Society’s mind blowing idea of

donating proceeds from selling donator’s collection items.

It reminds of my old friend I used to know at Theology

school whom passed away recently from a much pro-

gressed cancer. She used to take care of the most com-

plicated accounting works by just using her old abacus in

no time for over 10 years. One day, she just hung her one

piece of cloth by her hospital bedside and gave out all her

other belongings to needy neighbors and organized all her

surroundings and left this world light hearted.

I heard that this Somang Gallery came from President,

Yoo’s idea when she found so many collection items from

organizing her attic during remodeling of her house. Isn’t

this also a part of preparing end of one’s life? It also gave

me a big awakening lesson what a true happiness is from

possessing nothing.

I feel the weight of one’s life in each donated items at this

gallery. I wish this will be a chance to bring a true happi-

ness where there’s a pain. Further, I wish that Somang

Gallery can send wave of motivation to all of us to look

back at our neighbors and ponder upon a true meaning

of sharing.

‘생명살리기 소망 갤러리’ 개최에 진심으로 축하드립니다.

재미 한국인들의 아름다운 삶의 마무리에 진력하고 있는 소망소사

이어티가 이제는 사업영역을 넓혀 생명살리기 캠페인에도 적극적으

로 참여하고 있어 같은 ‘복지 동역자’로서 깊은 존경과 신뢰, 그리고

사랑을 보냅니다.

지난해 아프리카 오지 차드에서 식수가 없어 생명의 위협을 느끼며

살고 있는 주민들에게 당초 목표를 초과해 100개가 넘는 우물을 파

준 소망소사이어티의 감동 드라마는 이곳 한국의 자선단체들 사이에

서도 큰 화제가 됐습니다.

우물 파기에 이어 이번엔 생명살리기 전시회를 한다는 소식에 또 한

번 그 아이디어와 즉각 실천으로 옮기는 결단력에 감탄을 금치 못

합니다.

사실 이웃돕기 하면 기껏 생각하는 것이 바자회 정도입니다. 대부분

각자 집에서 쓰던 생활용품이나 옷가지들을 몇점 기증하고는 책임을

다하는 듯 생각하지요. 그런데 소장품을 기증받아 수익금을 자선기금

으로 적립하겠다는 발상의 전환에 멀리서나마 박수를 보냅니다.

갤러리 소식을 전해듣고 문득 말기암 선고를 받고 투병 중 세상을 떠

난 신학교 친구가 생각이 납니다. 10년 넘게 우리 재단의 복잡한 경리

업무를 주판 하나로 말끔히 정리해주곤 했던 분입니다. 어느날 그 친

구는 병원 입원실에 자신이 입었던 옷을 걸어놓고 필요한 사람들에게

모두 나눠주는 등 삶을 마무리하고는 이승을 훌쩍 떠났습니다.

소망 전시회도 알고보니 유분자 이사장이 집수리를 하는 가운데 골방

에 보관된 소장품들을 발견하고는 사회에 기증을 하기로 결심한데서

비롯됐다고 합니다. 이 역시 삶의 마무리라고 할까요. 한편으론 무소

유를 통한 행복이 무엇인지를 깨닫게 해줘 큰 교훈을 얻었습니다.

이번 전시회에 출품된 작품 하나하나에 생명의 무게를 느낍니다. 전

시회가 고통이 있는 곳에 참 행복을 가져다 줄 수 있는 계기가 되기

를 기대해 봅니다. 아울러 소망 갤러리가 동기부여가 돼 모든 사람

들이 한 번쯤은 내 이웃을 돌아보는 그런 자극을 주었으면 하는 바

람입니다.

소망 갤러리는 역사적 유품과 예술세계를 기부문화와 접목

하여, 생명을 살리고저 하는 간절한 소망의 마음들로 이루

어 졌습니다. 그렇기에, 소망 갤러리에 전시되는 모든 역사

적 유품과 예술품엔 생명을 살리고저하는 소망의 마음과 혼

이 새겨 있습니다.

소장자의 기부하는 마음 속에, 작가의 예술세계 속에, 또 무

엇보다 소망 갤러리에 참가해 주시는 모든 분들의 마음 속

에 새겨 있습니다.

육체적 정신적 장애로 어려운 삶을 이어가는 이웃들에게,

실질적인 도움과 소망을 주고자 하는 것이 소망 갤러리의

“생명 살리기”입니다. 잠자고 있는 오랜 소장품들의 가치

가 소망 갤러리에서 생명을 살리는 부활의 가치로 다시 태

어나는 것이고, 아직 드러나지 않은 작가의 세계와 작품이

소망 갤러리에서 귀한 가치로 창조되는 것입니다.

그렇기에, 소망 갤러리에서는 모든 작품의 가치가 객관적으

로 정해진 액수보다 생명을 살리고저 하는 마음으로 평가된

다 할 수 있겠습니다.

소망 갤러리를 통한 생명살리기의 행보는 이제 시작입니

다. 더 많은 소장자들의 기부를 통해 더 많은 생명을 살리

기 기원하고, 더 많은 “생명 살리기” 마음에 동참하는 작가

들을 발굴하여 그들의 세계를 열어가는데 일조할 것입니

다. 아울러 소망 갤러리는 문화와 예술을 통한 새로운 장르

의 기부문화를 정착시킴은 물론, 문화와 예술을 통해 세대

와 인종의 벽을 초월한 범 커뮤니티적 소망 갤러리의 “생명

살리기”로 성장해 갈 것입니다. 곧 탄생될 소망 WEB 갤러

리를 통해 기증되고 팔린 모든 귀중품들의 기록은 물론, 기

증자들과 작가들과 새로운 소장자들간의 NETWORK이 형

성될 것이며, 이렇게 지평을 넓혀가는 소망 갤러리가 될수

있도록 모든 분들의 후원을 간절히 소망하는 바입니다

Somang Gallery was created with the hearts of those who were inspired by

the idea of converting dormant values of cultural & historical artifacts, kept

unappreciated and merely collecting dusts at times, into vibrant living values

in helping lives of our neighbors whose fundamental needs of everyday

life have been greatly deprived due to their physical, emotional & social

disabilities (so called “illegal alien status”). Many compassionate people

are donating their treasures for the same cause, and an increasing number

of artists are approaching Somang Gallery to join the idea of bridging the

“world of art” and “world of giving.” And Somang Gallery shall continue to

provide venues for artists to display their passion and for collectors and

generous givers to show their care.

All funds generated through Somang Gallery shall strictly be used for the

purpose of helping these impoverished neighbors. The appropriation of

funds shall be determined by an impartial selection committee, whose

members’ lives are directly involved in helping people in needs, and the

administration of funds shall be done with complete transparency.

Unlike at other galleries, the values of the arts & artifacts at Somang Gallery

are not measured in terms of objective standards but rather in terms of

purity of hearts that want to share their belongings and talents in helping

others in need. From a certified 450-year old vase from Lee Dynasty to a

souvenir that was picked in a family trip, the genre & selections of items

at Somang Gallery is vastly open and broad. But every item carries a

common inherent theme, which is a genuine interest & desire to help those

in needs.

Somang Gallery has now just embarked. With support of those who read

this message and of those who participate in Somang Gallery event,

Somang Gallery shall continue to grow and hopes to be a formidable entity

in joining “world of art” with “world of giving.”

세월의 강물속으로 무심히 흘러 가다보면 어느덧 지상의 삶에서 영원

으로 향하는 시간의 문턱을 넘어서며 아쉬움 속에 머뭇거리는 자신을

바라보게 될 날이 올 것입니다.

그때서야 조급한 마음으로 우리의 마지막 여행 준비를 서두르기에는

그 죽음이라는 불청객이 언제 어떤 모습으로 우리를 찾아 올 지 그 누

구도 예측할 수 없습니다. 그렇기에 삶의 마무리 준비는 삶의 여정 안

에서 항상 죽음을 인식하면서 일상 안에서 이루어져야 하는 중간 과정

이 아닐까 합니다.

아름다운 삶의 마무리 전시회를 위한 소장품들을 대하면서 많은 느낌

들이 스쳐지나갑니다.

오랫동안 우리에게 보며 즐기는 기쁨도 주고, 한편으로는 멀어진 눈길

속 한 켠에서 잠들고 있던 소장품들이 때를 만난 듯, 세월의 입김 속에

빛바랜 모습을 털어내고 깨어나는 듯 합니다.

마치 자신의 존재 가치를 발견 하고자 하는 인간처럼, 우리 고유의 정

서가 깃든 작품들이 이웃 타인종에게 다가가는 기회와 더불어 생명을

살리는 귀한 일에 쓰임 받기위해 부르심을 받아 거듭 나듯이... 그리고

단순하고 간소한 삶의 의미를 한번쯤 생각해 보게 됩니다.

잎새를 떨쳐버리고 빈가지로 묵묵히 서있는 나무를 바라보면 나 자신

도 떨쳐 버릴 것이 없는지 되돌아 보게 됩니다.

우리의 삶도 비워내고 묵은 것과 결별하는 작업을 통해 보다 새로운 삶

을 가꾸기 위한 여백의 아름다움이 깃들지 않을까... 대나무가 한번 씩

용기가 필요할 것입니다. 소유의 집착과 미련에서 오는 번잡함이 자신

을 돌아보는 성찰과 주변 정리를 통해 단순하고 홀가분한 마음으로 돌

아가는 것, 그것이 바로 삶의 마무리 준비의 첫걸음이 아닐까요? 나아

가, 아름다운 삶의 마무리 준비가 타인의 생명을 살리는 일로 이어져

더불어 사는 삶, 나눔을 실천하는 사회로 나아가는 작은 물꼬 역할을

할 수 있다면 그것은 무엇보다 귀하고 뜻깊은 일이라 생각합니다.

이 세상에서 가장 아름답고도 가치 있는 선물, 사랑...

그 최고의 선물인 사랑으로 우리 주변에서 꺼져가는 생명의 불씨를 살

리는 발걸음에 많은 분들이 동행해 주시길 소망합니다.

There will be a time when we all have to face self-hesitation to step over

to this door of everlasting time, crossing from our lives even before we

realize it, while we are all floating in the current of Life’s river.

In knowing that, we can’t rush our journey to prepare our end because

we can’t predict when this stranger will visit us in what kind of shape.

So, I think this is rather a middle process where we prepare in our daily

lives’ journey by recognizing and acknowledging its existence as part

of our lives.

Many thoughts come across my mind while looking at all the gallery

collection items for this event in order to ready this beautiful life’s

journey. All of these pieces once gave us joy and the chance to

appreciate them, then for a while they were just stashed away far from

our view and now it looks as if they’ve just shaken off their dust and

faded looks from this long breath of life’s years. It’s as if they are trying

to say that they are worthy of existing. These items once again called

upon this mission to be used to restore many of our neighbor’s life. It’s

meaningful because it reflects our own cultures and ethos. I get to think

about simple and thrift lifestyle in doing so.

Looking at this tree standing quietly without any green leaves on its

empty branches makes me think if there’s anything that I should also

shake off from my own branches. Why don’t we have some room

in our life to store beautiful space through shuffling our own self and

let go of old and aged things…we need courage to make a decision

in order to get rid of our crummy belongings and surroundings and

refresh our life out of complacency. It’s like the bamboo shoots makes

its stern knot to grow even further and straighter. Isn’t this be the first

step toward preparing our finish line by letting go of your obsession of

possession and looking back our self to return to our original simple

and lighted heat and mind. Furthermore, it will be the most valuable

and meaningful deed when its used towards sharing and helping our

neighbors.

Love…the most precious and beautiful gift in the whole world. I dream

that many of you come and join with us in this walk of restoring

diminishing light of our neighbors by sharing this beautiful gift of love.

Artist Lee, Jong Kook 이종국 작가

대학에서 미술을 전공한 후 입시미술학원을 운영하며 큰 돈도 벌어봤지만, 똑같은 지식

과 똑같은 성공을 꿈꾸며 매일 바쁘게 살아야 하는 도시를 떠난 자연 속에서 정체성을 찾

고자 25년 가까이 산중생활을 해왔다. 그리고 15년 전 충북 청원군에서 가장 깡촌으로

손꼽히는 오지, 벌랏마을에 들어와 야생의 삶을 살다가 아내 메루를 만나고 아들 선우를

맞이하게 되면서 가족이라는 뿌리를 내리게 되었다. 한편 1973년 이래 마을에서 중단된

전통한지의 맥을 잇고자 닥나무를 심어 종이를 만들고, 전통한지 공예를 되살리면서 마

침내 벌랏을 한지체험마을로 만들었다. 현재는 다양한 한지 작품을 만들고 다양한 워크

숍과 강의 등을 통해 자연과 전통 한지를 알리는 작가로 활동하고 있다.

There is a small town called ‘Bol Lot’ in a remote area of Sojun Ri, Moonui Myun,

Chungwon Koon, Choongbook, Korea. It’s a Shangri-La. The word, ‘Lot’ in Chinese

means ‘Falling’ which means that it is in the most remote area where sometimes the

town’s people don’t even know when there is a war in the country…they say it’s a

legend. It’s the end of the earth where one can live a free life from all the worries of

the world for the peculiar shape of the land which is ‘closed front and back entrance

with opened up sky’. There, this nature guy with his family lives for the past 15 years.

Yi, Jong Kook…who spent all his life wrestling with mulberry trees for his crazy pas-

sion for ‘Hanji’. (Hanji is traditional Korean paper handmade from mulberry trees.)

He, now, lives his second life as not only a Hanji craftsman but also as a painter

and an ecology researcher ever since he started painting on the paper and saw the

providence of mother nature.

나눔의 기쁨에 동참하며이 종 국

산골에 움막짓고 혼자 살아가던 시절, 저의 시선을 멈추게 하는 소

리와 움직임에 가 닿으면 거기엔 늘 새와 바람이 있었습니다. 이른

봄 골짜기에서 제일 먼저 봄을 풀어내는 것도 새 였는데, 새의 그

맑은 소리에 봄꽃도 피어나고 산속의 뭇 생명들이 트림하듯 깨어

났지요. 새의 움직임에서 삶의 혜안을 얻었듯이 배추밭에서 막 깨

어나 풀풀 날아오르는 나비의 모습에서 깊은 영감을 받게 됩니다.

자연이 주는 커다란 나눔이며 기쁨입니다.

우리는 저마다 차고 넘치는 것이 있는 반면 조금 부족하고 더 채워

야 할 필요도 있습니다. 누군가는 물질은 넘치거나 부족하고 누군

가는 관심과 사랑이 넘치거나 더 필요할 지도 모릅니다. 그것이 물

질이든 마음이든 우리는 서로 나누면서 채워지고 하나가 되며 온

전지는 것 같습니다.

저는 작가로서 작업하는 것이 나눔이라 생각합니다. 닥나무를 키

우고 풀을 제거하고 나무를 자르고 삶고 두들겨 종이를 만드는 것

의 제 삶의 근간이 됩니다. 천년을 이어온 종이가 시대의 변화속에

서 외면당한 아픔을 딛고 우리가 이어가는 삶의 쓰임을 회복하며

치유되고 진화해가기를 바라는 진정성을 담아가고 있는 것이지요.

제가 전통이 사라지는 것을 아쉬워하며 전통한지 복원에 오랫동안

노력을 기울여 온 것은 문화적 소외는 정신이 가난해지는 것이라

여겼기 때문입니다. 한지를 복원하면서 저는 정신적 풍요를 갖게

되었고 그러한 저의 경험을 나누고 가르치고 있는데 좋은 반응을

얻고 있습니다. 지속가능한 귀농교육과 해외전시도 많은 관심을

받고 있는데, 나눌수 있다는 것이 얼마나 기쁜일인지요.

나누는 기쁨이 계속적으로 전해져 갈 때 세상은 어떻게 달라져갈

까요! 지난 이맘때쯤일 겁니다. 저는 소망소사이어티의 나눔 행사

에 동참하며 많은 관심속에 좋은 전시를 치를 수 있어 기쁘고 감

사했습니다. 그때 동영상을 통해 소망소사이어티에서 실천하고 있

는 아프리카 우물파기 프로젝트 과정을 보게 되었는데 깊은 감명

을 받았습니다. 우물에서 물을 푸며 환희에 차 기뻐하는 아프리카

인들의 모습도 좋았지만 이런 저런 어려움을 통해서도 한사람 한

사람의 마음이 모아져가는 과정은 감동적이었습니다. 자신의 고

통은 뒤로 한 채 애써 모아놓은 쌈짓돈까지 보태면서 기쁨에 겨

워 흘리는 눈물은, 나눔은 받는 사람뿐만이 아니라 주는 사람에

게도 커다란 기쁨임을 보여주는 산 증거였지요. 우리는 아마도 본

성적으로 남도 행복할 때 우리자신도 진정으로 행복해지는 것같

습니다. 그럼에도 타인의 행복을 위해 애쓰고 실천하기는 쉽지 않

은 것같습니다.

그러한 한계를 깨고 당신 스스로의 실천은 물론 다른 이들의 본성

까지 일깨우고 앞장서서 이끌어주시는 소망소사이어티의 유분자

회장님께 커다란 박수와 존경을 보냅니다. 오지마을 산속에서 살

고 있는 저를 이끌어내 이곳까지 오게 한 유분자회장님, 이렇게 나

눔의 기쁨에 동참함에 깊은 감사를 드립니다.

About being a part of this joy of sharing...Lee, Jong Kook

There are always birds and winds when I reach out to this sound and movement which grasp my attention in this remote area of countryside where my little mud-hut is. In early spring, there goes these birds appearing first to greet the sea-son. Their pure chirping sound awakes spring blossoms and all living things in

the mountainside from their lazy sleep. I often get inspired by this nature, butterfly flopping it’s weak wings on a cabbage leaf, as I get wised up about life from a bird’s line of moving. It’s a nature’s big gift and joy to me.Sometimes we are over loaded and sometimes we are needy. Someone might be over loaded with things and someone might be over loaded with love and caring or in need of them. Whether it’s the things or hearts, we become full and complete by sharing them. I believe my workings are my sharing as an artist. Planting a mulberry tree and watering them, cutting them and beating them down to make paper became the root of my life itself. This thousand year old paper had to overcome people’s dis-regard which came along with wind of change. It holds the sincere hope of evolving and continuing its useful life again. The reason why I strive so much to revive this disappear-ing traditional ‘Hanji’, losing its traditional value is because I believe that cultural isolation is a poverty of one’s mind. I’ve become rich in spirit from reviving work of ‘Hanji’ and I get more of positive reactions from students whom I share and teach my workings with. It has become a big joy to me to lead on-going educations on how to return to nature and doing over-seas galleries.How the world will change if we keep on continuing our effort to share this joy with everybody? It was around this time of last year. I was happy and thankful that I was able to hold a gallery with much attention as part of Somang Society’s benefit fair. I was deeply moved by Somang Society’s Well Project in Africa region by watching video of their works. It was touching not only to see many African neighbors jump-ing for great delight for the fresh and clean water pouring out of their new well but also to see the whole process of overcoming obstacles by pouring in everyone’s heart one by one. It was a living proof to all of us that givers get as much joy as takers get by looking at these volunteers shedding tears of joy when they even chip in the last little change from their pocket not concerning their own need. Maybe it is our instinct that we become truly happy when others become happy too. Although, it is also true that it’s not an easy task to strive for other people’s happiness.None the less, I send my biggest applaud and respect to President, Yoo at Somang Society who leads by example by not only pro-actively do it but also awakes other people’s in-stinct. She even drew me out of my small mud-hut house in remote countryside…I deeply thank you for letting me part-take in this joy of sharing.

“집안 소장품 기부해 이웃 도와요”

소망소사이어티, 내달 `생명살리기’ 갤러리 개최

전통공예품이나 미술품 기증받아 경매통해 모금

“집안 구석 어디에선가 잠자는 소장품을 깨워 사람의 생명을 살리려고 합니다.

한인 여러분 들의 동참을 바랍니다.”

미주 한인사회에서 기부문화를 이끌어오고 있는 소망소사이어티(이사장 유분자)

는 오는 3월 ‘2012 생명 살리기 소망갤러리’를 개최한다. 소망갤러리는 한인들이

지니고 있는 한국 전통공예품들이나 미술품 등을 기증받아 전시회를 갖고 경매를

통해 얻은 수익금으로 불우한 한인들을 돕는다는 계획이다.

전시회는 LA 한국문화원에서 3월1일부터 3일까지, UCI 클레어 트래벌 예술학교

에서 8일부터 10일까지 두 차례 개최한다. 이번 소망갤러리는 기부문화와 문화

예술의 세계를 접목해 생명을 살린다는 취지로 돼 있어 의의를 더한다. 소망갤러리

준비위원회 마동환 위원장은 “예술품을 전문적으로 감정하거나 예술적인 감동을

전하는 것이 우리의 분야가 아니다”며 “이를 통해 새로운 생명을 살려내는 것이

우리의 분야이며 우리가 관심을 가져야 할 부분”이라고 지적했다.

준비위원회는 전시회에 참관하는 사람들을 대상으로 고유의 일렬번호를 주고

전시된 물품 옆에 희망하는 구입 금액과 번호를 적는 방식으로 경매를 진행하기로

했다. 모아진 금액은 소망소사이어티에 사연을 통해 도움을 구하는 대상자들을

선정해 지급하게 된다. 심사의 공정성을 위해 준비위원회나 소망소사이어티에

소속되지 않은 외부 인사를 영입한다는 방침이다. 현재 소망갤러리는 감정가 2

만달러에 달하는 일붕 서경보씨의 달마도를 비롯해 이석 임송희씨의 산수화 등

70여점의 작품들을 모았다. 이들 중에서는 동양화가나 공예가가 자신의 작품을

직접 기증한 것도 있다.

유분자 이사장은 1630~50년에 제작된 것으로 추정된 조선백자 소문병을 비롯해

44년 동안 이민생활을 해 오면서 수집한 50여점의 예술품들을 기증했다.

유 이사장은 “얼마 전 집수리를 위해 살림을 정리하다 집 한 구석에서 먼지 쌓 인

장식품이 몇 만달러나 되는 골동품이라는 것을 알았다”며 “이런 물품들이 모여

어려운 생명을 살리는 귀중한 나눔이 될 수 있을 것”이라는 생각에서 일을 시작

하게 됐다고 설명했다.

현재 2012 생명 살리기 소망갤러리 준비위원회는 12명으로 구성됐다. 마동환

변호사(굿네이버스 USA 이사장)와 차원경(소망소사이어티)씨가 공동 준비위원장

으로 돼 있으며 서양화가 최용순씨와 박영선 상속전문 변호사 등이 준비위원으로

활동하고 있다.

소망갤러리는 한인들이 소장하고 있는 작품 기증을 받고 있으며 문의는 소망

극심한 식수난을 겪고 있는 아프리카 극빈국 차드에 ‘소망 우물’ 100개를 세워

생명수를 선물했던 소망소사이어티(이사장 유분자.이하 소망)와 굿네이버스

USA 중앙일보가 다시 손잡고 새로운 생명살리기 프로젝트를 진행한다.

소망측은 25일 LA한국문화원(원장 김재원)에서 기자회견을 통해 ‘생명살리기

소망갤러리’ 프로젝트의 시작을 알렸다.

소망갤러리는 한인들의 소장 예술품을 기부받아 이를 판매한 수익금으로 육체적

정신적으로 고통받는 한인들을 돕기 위한 사랑 나눔 갤러리다. 기부와 문화예술

을 접목한 새로운 시도다.

중앙일보와 구호NGO 굿네이버스 뿐만 아니라 LA한국문화원도 후원한다.

소망갤러리는 3월 1일부터 3일까지 LA한국문화원에서 3월 8일부터 10일까지

UC어바인 모던 아트에서 2차례 개관한다.

전시품은 유분자 이사장이 소장해온 조선시대 중기 백자를 포함한 30여점 과

세계 각지 한인들이 기부한 소품 등 총 70여점에 달한다. 특히 백자는 1630

~1650년대 제작된 소문병으로 가치를 매기기 어려운 문화재급 보물이다. 증서

도 첨부돼 있다. 이번 프로젝트는 ‘골방’에서 우연히 시작됐다.

유 이사장은 “지난해 11월 집 리모델링을 시작했는데 빈방 한켠에 모아둔 예술

품들을 정리하다가 아이디어를 얻었다”면서 “아무리 값비싼 예술품이라도

먼지만 쓰고 있으면 죽은 물건이라고 생각했다. 죽어있던 가치를 깨워 산 사람

을 살리는 일에 쓰기 위한 프로젝트”라고 설명했다.

생명갤러리를 통해 조성된 수익금은 전액 질병으로 고통받는 빈곤층과 싱글

맘 등 절망 한가운데 희망을 심는 일에 쓰여진다. 수혜 대상자는 한인사회 저명

인사 3~4명으로 구성된 심사위원회가 선정한다. 수혜자 수나 지원금액은 아직

결정되지 않았다.

소망측은 이번 전시회를 통해 갤러리의 의도를 알리고 향후 연중 행사로 이어

갈 계획이다. 또 소망갤러리 웹사이트를 제작해 기증받은 작품의 기증자와

구매자를 기록해 최대한 투명하게 운영하겠다고 밝혔다.

소망은 지난 2010년 3월 본보와 손잡고 소망 우물 프로젝트를 시작했다.

아프리카 극빈국 차드에 우물을 파주기 위한 사업이다. 당초 40개를 목표로

했지만 1년만에 2배가 넘는 100개 분량의 기부금 30만달러를 모금했다. 올해

2차 소망우물 프로젝트를 진행할 계획이다.

생명 살리기 소망 갤러리를 좀 더 체계적이고 생산적인 행사로 만들기 위해 마동환,

차원경 공동위원장을 추대하고 김용화, Carol Choi, Sylvia Ahn, Maria Ahn, Vincent

Lee, Bryan Lee, 박영선, 최경철, Kathy Lee, Phil Ahn 10명의 준비위원 모임으로 준

비위원회가 시작되었습니다.

매월 두차례 회의를 통해 다양한 의견들이 형성되었으며 특히 이번 행사는 아름다운

기부문화의 선례를 남기고 죽기 전에 할 수 있는 일, 아름다운 마무리를 위한 행사로

진행될 수 있도록 유도하고 준비하자는 공통된 목적으로 시작되었습니다.

We’ve appointed Mr. Ma, Dong Hwan and Ms. Cha, Won Kyung as our Head of

Committee Member in order to create a more effective and productive Somang Gal-

lery event. Furthermore, we started out with our 10 other Committee Members of

Yong Hwa Kim, Carol Choi, Sylvia Ahn, Maria Ahn, Vincent Lee, Bryan Lee, Young

Sun Park, Kyung Chul Choi, Kathy Lee and Phil Ahn.

We have gathered twice a month to discuss about how we could make this event

a beautiful precedent of donating culture in our community, and to help others think

about what they could do to prepare one’s death. We have a common goal of set-

ting this event a beautiful step towards our meaningful end.

당하는 죽음에서 맞이하는 죽음으로...여행을 떠나기 전 잊지 못할 추억을 남기기 위해 철저한 준비를 하듯이

이 세상을 떠나는 마지막 여행에도 준비가 필요합니다. 생의 마지막 시

기에 가족과 인사를 나누며 인생을 아름답게 마무리하고 싶은 우리의

소망을 이루기 위해 죽음 준비가 절대로 필요한 때입니다.

사람들은 누구나 죽을 때 인간으로서의 존엄성을 유지하면서 편안하

게 가족에게 둘러싸여 마지막 작별인사를 나누고 가족에게 부담을 적

게 주면서 떠나고 싶어합니다. 그러나 불행하게도 이러한 이별을 맞이

하지 못하는 사람들이 많습니다. 그 이유는 미리 죽음을 준비하지 않

았기 때문입니다.

소망유언서(Advance Healthcare Directive)를 꼭 써야 하는 이유뜻하지 않은 사고나 병으로 의식불명 상태가 되었을 때, 어떤 의료행위

를 받을 것인가를 미리 문서로 작성함으로써 임종 시 인간으로서 품위

와 존엄성을 지키게 도와 줍니다. 또한 회복할 수 없는 상태에서 값비싼

생명 연장 장치와 의료 서비스가 남용되는 것을 방지할 수 있습니다. 환

자 자신은 고통을 줄여 존엄한 임종을 맞을 수 있고 가족들은 임종자를

편안하게 보낼 수 있으며 동시에 의료비 부담을 줄일 수 있습니다.

Somang Society is a non-profit organization with a vision to educate

and enlighten the community about the final stage of life and pre-

paring for death. Operating under the slogan of “Beautiful Life and

Departure,” Somang Society’s mission is to enhance the quality of

life of all human beings by promoting awareness about death and to

thoughtfully prepare an individual toward a peaceful and meaningful

end of life. Somang Society educates participants about preparing

for funerals, promotes benefits of cremation, and encourages organ

donation and financial benefaction to charitable causes upon death.
