Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences (SNIMS) is the first Medical College ofGurudeva Charitable Trust (GCT) founded by a group of Philanthropic followers of Sree Narayana Guru, the great saint and social reformer of Kerala. The goal of the institution is to provide top class medical education and quality health care at affordable cost.

The location of SNIMS is 14 kms away from Nedumbassery Cochin International Airport in between national highways NH 47 and NH 17 at Chalakka Spread over 46 acres, away from the noisy congested city.

The Academic Block Accommodate the pre-clinical and paramedical departments, students labs, museums,lecture halls with audio visual aminities, examination halls, central library, digital library, 24 hours internet connection, large conference hall, auditorium etc. the 500 bed hospital offers a range of clinical specialities and emergency services.

SNIMS campus provides separate bath attached hostel facilities for boys and girls in addition to in-house accommodation to faculty members. It also has well-toned playground, well equipped GYMs to keep students physically fit.

Started MBBS classes in the year 2009 with batch strength of 100 students each and our first batch was appeared for the final examination in 2014. Of these, students allotted by the Government are admitted in 50 seats and the remaining 50 are filled by students who pass the entrance examination conducted by the management with the approval of the Government. We are blessed that we have experienced faculty from all over India, who have excelled in teaching and research in their disciplines.We aim for the growth of the student in the academic front as well as total human being. The results of the examinations speak for the dedication of the teachers and the hard work of the students. Sports and literary activities are promoted to contribute in our effort to mould good individuals who can contribute in their own ways in the development of the society.

CAMPUS

SNIMS Campus is situated in 25.34.438 acres of land in a Rural area. The medical college is housed in a unitary campus near its teaching hospital having room for future expansion.Separate hostel facilities for boys and girls are provided where spacious rooms on twin sharing basis, common rooms, computer rooms, gymnasium and facilities for indoor games add to the attraction. Canteen facilities are excellent where quality culinary fare is served. Health Insurance is mandatory for all students and the stay in wardens ensure supervision and security.

FUNCTIONSThe College council looks after the matters of academics, student activities, student discipline, staff issues and development of Institution. It also have the role to establish and monitor systems and processes to set strategic direction, identify and manage risk, record other activities such as:

Drawing up details of curriculum and training programs and all other academic matters. Enforcement of discipline in the campus. Organizing interdepartmental meetings like Grand Rounds, Statistical meetings and clinic

pathological meetings including periodical research review in the Institution regularly.

AUDITORIUM AND EXAMINATION HALL

Auditorium is provided in the level 2 of Academic Block. Auditorium/Examination Hall (Multi-purpose) of 824 sq.m area as per the MCI requirement is available.

CENTRAL PHOTOGRAPHIC CUM AUDIOVISUAL UNIT

Central photographic and audiovisual sections with accommodation for studio, dark room, enlarging and Photostat work is provided in the ground level of Academic Block. Accommodation are provided for Artist and Medical Illustrators and Modellers.

CENTRAL WORKSHOP

There is a central workshop having facilities for repair of mechanical, electrical and A/c and Refrigeration equipments of college and the hospitals. It is managed by a qualified personnel.

LECTURE THEATRE

4 air conditioned , gallery type Lecture Theatres are available in this institution out of which 3 of them having seating capacity for 100 students and one will be of capacity for 250 students each. The audio-visual aids including Overhead Projector, Slide Projector, LCD Projector and a microphone are also provided. All the departments shared these Lecture Hall in a scheduled manner. E-Class facility is also there.

PLAYGROUND AND GYMNASIUM

The management takes good care of the same and let their students live a healthy and fit life. A healthy lifestyle also helps the students to concentrate more on the studies and keeps them active throughout the day. A well equipped gymnasium and sports ground are provided for students within the college campus. A physical Instructor is regularly providing guidance, support and supervision to all these activities.

MEDICAL EDUCATION UNIT

The Medical Education Unit (MEU) of SNIMS is to polish the skills of medical faculty at SNIMS in the art of teaching. The focus is not only on teaching, but also on developing the complex roles of being mentors, assessors, curriculum designers, facilitators and role models. The unit is equipped with teaching and training materials on various subjects of Medical Education Technology.

COMMUNICATION SYSTEM & IT SUPPORT

The College and Hospital is Interlinked with telephone & Intercom System. Unlimited Internet Facility 24x7, of 2 MBPS speed with a BSNL leased line & highly secured servers are provided. A well developed Hospital Information System (HIS) is available. The IT Department Is responsible for regular updating the website of the institution.

CANTEEN & CAFETERIA

Cafeteria is situated inside the hospital. The food and snacks served in the cafeterias are freshly made and left overs are disposed of the other day. The canteen is adequately staffed with cooks, maintenance and administrative personel . Caters to all patients, patients relatives, doctors, interns and residents. Both veg and non-veg of quality and hygiene are available at reasonable price and served to the students as well as faculties and staffs. Separate sitting arrangements for doctors, staffs, patient and patient parties are provided.

ELECTRICITY

The energy supply of 400 KVA the institution is obtained through Kerala State Electricity Board. To ensure un-interrupted power supply the Campus is provided through generator backup 500 KVA in College as well as in hospital. All electrical arrangements are controlled and maintained by electrical department of institute headed by the Electrical Engineer. The electricians are available round the clock.

SANITATION & WATER SUPPLY

Safe drinking water, basic sanitation & hygiene is one of the prime concerns globally. Adequate sanitary facilities and safe drinking water facilities are provided for the staffs & students in all sections as required. For the maintenance works the plumbers are always available round the clock.

NON CLINICAL DEPARTMENTSANATOMY

i. Demonstration Room – Two demonstration rooms (45 sq.m each) fitted with strip chairs, Over Head Projector, Slide Projector, Television, Video and other audiovisual aids, so as to accommodate at least 60 students.

ii. Dissection Hall – (277 sq.m.) to accommodate at least 100 students. It is well-ventilated with exhaust fans. Extra Learning aids are also provided. In addition, an embalming room (18 sq.m.), space for 3 storage tanks (one of 18 sq.m. & two of 9 sq.m.each) and cold storage room with space for 10-12 dead bodies (18 sq.m) or cooling cabinets are provided.

iii. Histology Laboratory (150sq.mt.) with accommodation for work benches fitted with water taps, sinks, cupboards for microscope storage and electric points for 60 students. A preparation room (18 sq. m) for technicians and storage of equipment is there.

iv. Research - There is a research laboratory (50sq.m) for research purposes.ASv. Museum-There is a museum (150sq.m.) with all facilities are provided.AS

vi. Departmental Library-cum-seminar room (45sq.m) with 113 books is provided.

PHYSIOLOGY

i. Demonstration Room (45 sq.mt.) fitted with strip chairs, Over head Projector, Slide Projector, Television, Video and other audiovisual aids, so as to accommodate at least 50-60 students.

ii. Practical rooms- 3 laboratories with adequate accommodation is provided to accommodate 60 students.Amphibian laboratory (one)-(150 sq.m) is provided with continuousworking tables. One preparation room (14 Sq.m) provided with the amphibian laboratory.Mammalian laboratory (one)-(60 Sq.m) provided with four tables. One preparation room (14 sq.m) is provided with the Mammalian laboratory.Human Laboratories:a) Haematology Lab. (150 Sq.m) provided with continuous working tables. One preparation room (14 Sq.m) is provided with this laboratory.b) Clinical Physiology Laboratory (60Sq.m) provided with 8 tables with mattresses and adjustable hand-end.

iii. Departmental Library-cum-seminar room (30Sq.m) with at least 80-100 books.iv. Research laboratory (50 Sq.m) for research purposes.

BIOCHEMISTRY

i. Demonstration Room (45 sq.m) fitted with strip chairs, Over head Projector, Slide Projector, Television, Video and other audiovisual aids, so as to accommodate at least 50-60 students.

ii. Practical class room- There is a laboratory (150 Sq.m) with all facilities also be provided.iii. Departmental library-cum-seminar room (30 Sq.m) with at least 80-100 books. iv. Research laboratory (50 Sq.m) for research purposes.

PATHOLOGY

i. Demonstration room (45 Sq.m) fitted with Over Head Projector, Slide projector, Television Video and other audiovisual aids, to accommodate at least 50-60 students.

ii. Practical Laboratories for Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology/Cytopathology (150 Sq.m) and for clinical Pathology/Haematology (150 sq.m) with preparation room (14 sq.m) is provided.

iii. Separate service laboratory each (25 Sq.mt.) for Histopatholgy, Cytopathology, Haematology. A balance room (14 Sq. m), store room (14 sq.m) and special room for high speed centrifuge (14 sq.m) and a wash room (14 sq.m) with continuous water supply.

iv. Museum- (60 Sq.m) for specimens, charts, models with a sitting capacity of at least 25 students.

v. Autopsy Block- There shall be an Autopsy room (400 sq.m) with all facilities is provided. vi. Departmental library-cum-seminar room (30 sq.m) with at least 80- 100 books.

BLOOD BANK

Blood Bank is provided in the ground level of the hospital.The Blood Bank caters to the need of all the patients of the hospital. All blood collected is split into various components like Packed Cells, Fresh Frozen plasma, Cryoprecipitate, Platelets and single donor platelets on request.SNIMS has an air conditioned Blood Bank and it includes:

Registration and Medical Examination Room and selection of donors room with suitable furniture and facilities.

MICROBIOLOGY

i. Demonstration room- (45 Sq.m) to accommodate at least 50-60 students is provided.ii. Practical laboratory (150 sq.m) with a preparation room (14 sq.m) is provided

iii. Separate service laboratory each for Bacteriology including anaerobic; Serology; Virology; Parasitology; Mycology; Tuberculosis and Immunology (each 25 Sq.m) provided.

iv. Museum- (60 Sq.m) for specimens, charts, models, with a seating capacity of at least 25 students provided.

v. Departmental Library-cum-seminar room (30Sq.m) with at least 80-100 books is provided.vi. Research: There shall be one research laboratory (50 Sq.m) for research purposes

PHARMACOLOGY

i. Demonstration room- (45 Sq. m) to accommodate at least 50-60 students.ii. Practical laboratories- with accommodation for 50-60 students.

ANIMAL HOLDING AREAThe Animal House is a resource centre for students and faculty of various medical disciplines. SNIMS have a well established Animal House, registered as 1274/ac/09/CPCSEA. The Animal House possesses complete facilities for breeding and maintenance of laboratory animals under standard husbandry condition. Animals are housed and used for breeding of and experiments for medical research as per rules & regulation of CPCSEA. SNIMS also have Animal House Committee and Animal Ethics Committee for regular monitoring of Animal House besides Veterinary Officer as in charge of Animal House. Veterinary clinical services & care are given to all animals housed at the department.

FORENSIC MEDICINE

i. Demonstration room (45 sq.m) to accommodate at least 50-60 students.ii. Museum (150 Sq.m) is provided.

iii. A laboratory (150 Sq.m) for examination of specimens, tests and Forensic histopathology, Serology, anthropology and toxicology.

iv. Autopsy Block –Autopsy room (400 sq.m) with facilities for cold storage, for cadavers, ante-rooms, washing facilities, with an accommodation capacity of 20-25 students is provided.

v. Department Library-cum-seminar room (30 Sq.m) with at least 80-100 books.vi. Research laboratory (50 Sq.m) for research purposes.

COMMUNITY MEDICINE

i. Demonstration room (45 sq.m) to accommodate at least 50-60 students.ii. A laboratory (150 Sq.m) with facilities for purposes of demonstration

of various laboratory practicals is provided.iii. Museum (100 Sq.m) for the display of models, charts, specimens and other material

concerning communicable diseases etc is provided.iv. Departmental Library-cum-seminar room (30 Sq.m) with at least 80-100 books. v. Research laboratory (50 Sq.m) for research purposes.

Primary Health Centre/Rural Health Training Centre

SNIMS have four primary health centres/rural health training centres for training of students in community oriented primary health care and rural based health education for the rural community attached to it. Separate residential arrangements for boys and girls, interns and

undergraduates with mess facilities shall also be provided in RHTC Munambam which shall be under the full administrative jurisdiction of the medical college. Adequate transport is provided for carrying out field work, teaching and training activities by the department of Community Medicine and other departments (both for staff and students).

URBAN TRAINING HEALTH CENTRE

Urban Health Training Centre in Parur is under the administrative control of Department of Community Medicine. Dedicated vehicular support is provided for commuting the staff and students.

Hospital

SNIMS is a Medical College Hospital in the coastal belt of Ernakulam District, which provides comprehensive medical services and is aiming to establish itself as a centre of excellence. The hospital is located on the roadside and is a teritiary care centre for the population between Ernakulam and Thrissur especially patients from Parur, Aluva, Mala & Kodungalloor & nearby areas. The hospital is a well equipped one with competent doctors in various departments and provides high quality medical care. The hospital has been privileged to have the services of eminent consultants in various disciplines. We are committed to offer the most advanced

diagnosis and treatment in Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry and other super-specialty departments like Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology, Urology and Paediatric surgery. We have fully equipped ICU services, Operation Theatres and Labour Room. Our medical and nursing staff is selected after close scrutiny and find a mix of seniors with ambitious juniors who undergo training sessions and workshops in addition to routine CMEs. The nursing and non clinical staff extend dedicated care and they undergo regular trainings to hone their skills. It also caters to RSBY, ECHS and almost all Health Insurance Firms.

GENERAL

Accommodation is provided for Dean (36Sq.m) and Medical Superintendent (36Sq.m) and offices for supportive staff, Nursing Superintendent’s room along with computer and internet facility and waiting space for the visitors is provided.

CENTRAL REGISTRATION

Both the Outpatient and Inpatient registration and Statistics Department are provided with computer facilities.

ENQUIRY

All the required information about facilities and services can be obtained from the Hospital Enquiry round the clock. Appointments for doctors have to be done after discussion with the enquiry.

OUT PATIENT DEPARTMENT

Timings : 9AM – 4PMRegistration Counter works from 7.30AM – 4PM. Separate Counter for Old and New cases. No discrimination on caste, religion, gender or disabilities. Prior appointments can be fixed the previous day. Appointment patients will be given a preference. Only Emergency walk-in can be seen out of turn. Payments for all specialties can be made at the OP Billing Counter.

CLINICAL DEPARTMENTS

(i) MEDICINE AND ALLIED SPECIALITIES

a. GENERAL MEDICINE

The department is a mixture of Experience & Quality. In addition to the OPD & IP services, also offer 24 hours specialist services in the wards, MICU and Emergency Room. The department has speciality clinics on Diabetes and for life style diseases and thyroid diseases. The department is provided with 4 units and 120 beds.

b. PAEDIATRICS

The services of the paediatricians are available round the clock. The department have a state of the art Paediatric ICU & NICU, Immunization and Well Baby Clinic, Paediatric Asthma Clinic and Neurological Developmental Disorders Clinic including Autism and ADHD. The department is provided with 2 units and 60 beds.

c. TUBERCULOSIS AND RESPIRATORY DISEASES

The department undertakes all types of services (Diagnosis, Treatment & Prevention) of Respiratory Diseases. The department has speciality Clinics on Tobacco Smoking Cessation Clinic, Asthma Clinic and Allergy Clinic. The department is provided with 1 unit and 20 beds.

d. DERMATOLOGY

It is a speciality with both medical and surgical aspects. All procedures in Dermatology & Cosmetology are done here. The department is provided with 1 unit and 10 beds.

e. PSYCHIATRY

Care of acutely ill, rehabilitation of chronically ill patients, nacro therapy, De Addiction therapy, Electro convulsive therapy, Material therapy & Sex therapy are routinely done here. Also provide General Psychiatric OPD and speciality Clinics like Child Guidance Clinic, De-Addiction Clinic & Dementia Clinic. The department is provided with 1 unit and 10 beds.

(ii) SURGERY AND ALLIED SPECILALITIES

a. GENERAL SURGERY

The surgeons are available round the clock. All routine surgeries like Hernia, Haemorrhoids, Thyroid Diseases, Varicose Vein etc and Laparoscopic Surgeries are being done here. Emergency management & ICU facilities are available here. The department is provided with 4 units and 120 beds.

b. ORTHOPAEDICS

The speciality Clinics provided are Back-Ache Clinic, Replacement Surgery Clinic and Paediatric Clinic. The department is provided with 2 units and 60 beds.

c. OPHTHALMOLOGY

A fully equipped OPD , experienced faculty and a dedicated operation theatre with facilities for all ophthalmic procedures are provided. Regular ophthalmology medical camps & school programs are also provided. The department is provided with 1 unit and 20 beds.

d. OTO-RHINOLARYNGOLOGY

The audiology department provides all audiology tests CPTA and impedance. The facilities provided are Routine OPD procedures like diagnostics Nasal Endoscopy, Video Laryngoscopy , Hearing Assessment tests, Neonatal screening for hearing – BERA/OAE , Speech therapy and Audiotory verbal therapy. Also provide speciality clinics like Headache Clinic, Vertigo Clinic, Voice Disorder Clinic, Snoring Clinic & Hearing aid dispensing facilities. The department is provided with 1 unit and 20 beds.

(iii) OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

The department is committed to providing excellent care to Gynaecological & Obstetrics patient in addition to the specialty clinics. Also provide in house services of Gynaecologists round the clock. The department has separate provision of USG, Colposcopy and Laparoscopy. Gynaecology Clinic, Well Women Clinic, Adolecent Programs, Awareness Camps are provided. The department is provided with 2 units and 60 beds.

(iv) RADIO DIAGNOSIS

Accommodation is provided for 300mA, 500mA, 600mA Rooms. I.I.T.V. System, Fluroscopy System (36sq.m.),Ultra sound room(15sq.m) Room for 60 mA Mobile X-ray system (15 sq.m) , CT Scan system, Store room for X-Ray films related material (15 sq.m) , Museum (25 sq.m.) , Waiting room for patient, enquiry office and staff rooms for Professor & HOD, Assoc. Profs., Asstt. Profs., Residents , Demonstration room.

(v) ANAESTHESIOLOGY

Accommodation for the department of Anaesthesia is provided for staff on duty in operation theaters in that block itself.Offices for Heads of Departments and Heads of Units, accommodation for the other unit staff. Clinical demonstration rooms and departmental Library-cum-Seminar room (30 Sq.m) with a seating capacity of 50 students is provided.

OPERATION THEATREThe operation theatres are centrally air-conditioned and well equipped. The Operation Theatre Unit is provided with facilities as per the MCI Requirements. Two such units are provided for General Surgery, one for ENT, one for Orthopaedics; one for Ophthalmology and one for Obstetrics and Gynaecology and one for septic cases.

Minor Operation Theatre – one minor operation theatre is also provided.

(vi) DENTISTRY

Dental department is organizing various dental health and evaluation program for common public and continuing dental education for dental professionals as well as staff.OPD room is well ventilated and separate chambers for clinical and nursing staff along with filtered drinking water neat and tidy toilets and wash room with sitting arrangement for patients. The department is full fledged as per the MCI Requirement.

CENTRAL STERILISATION SERVICES:

There is an independent Central Sterilization unit capable of taking the total working load of operation theatres, laboratories close to or in the operation theatre block itself. It have adequate equipment like bulk sterilize with separate ends for loading unsettle material, unloading sterile, cold sterilize, Ethylene oxide sterilize, freon ethylene instruments and mattress sterilize, sterile racks, mixers, and trays for instruments.This department work round the clock and all materials, instruments, trays, and dressing material etc. will be supplied round the clock.

CENTRAL LABORATORIES

Central Laboratories is already provided in the Level 2 of the Hospital Block. We have state of the art equipments and established infrastructure which makes our reporting accurate. Technology driven professionals have helped in the up graduation of our laboratory. Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology and Pathology have all the routine tests. We have fully Arterial Blood Gas Analyzer and Fully automated hormone analyzer in addition to histopathology and immunoassays. All tests for diagnosing infectious diseases and tumor markers are available in our laboratory.Central Lab has following sections:

CENTRAL CASUALTY DEPARTMENT

We treat patients of several medical specialties. Our work consists of treatment procedures performed on an outpatient basis, transport of patients to examination units and wards, and preparing patients to emergency operations. Sometimes, a severely ill patient requires all our attention.The casualty services are under the control of Chief Casualty Medical Officer. There are 20 beds available. The Resuscitation area is dedicated to the immediate care of patients and victims in cardiac arrest, airway, breathing and circulation compromise. A patient may be shifted to the Resus area from outside or from an area within the hospital or emergency department itself. The Major Trauma area will have dedicated EM Physicians (along with EM nursing staff). Accommodation for Resuscitation Services including Oxygen supply, Ventilators, Defibrillator and two fully equipped disaster trolleys, Emergency X-Ray, Investigative facilities, Operation Theatres etc are provided. Adequate sanitary arrangements & drinking water facilities for patients, their attendants and the staff of the department are provided in the respective blocks.

Emergency and accidents room functions round the clock on all days. Medical Officer and resident doctors are available 24 hrs all days. Specialists are available on call round the clock 5 beds with equipments for resuscitation Protocol for mass casualties followed Medico legal cases are managed Critical care and Trauma ICU 24 Hour Ambulance Service PRO services available.

CENTRAL HOSPITAL PHARMACY

Pharmacy department of the hospital should be located so that an easy communication with other department is provided. There are multiple pharmacies located in the different area of the hospital.SNIMS Pharmacy is a department or service in this hospital, responsible for the supply of medications to hospital wards as well as ambulatory patients. The department is headed by professionally competent, legally qualified pharmacist who directly supervises and ensures the correct dispensing, compounding & distribution of medication to in & out patients.

CENTRAL HOSPITAL STORES

SNIMS provide a Central Hospital Stores for stocking & supply of drugs, equipments etc.. The main function of Central Stores is to store and provide materials to all the clinical and non clinical areas of the hospital required for their smooth functioning.

CATHETERIZATION LABORATORY

A catheterization laboratory or cath lab is an examination room in a hospital or clinic with diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualize the arteries of the heart and the chambers of the heart and treat any stenosis or abnormality found.Cath lab (Philips Allura FD 10) Angiogram, Angioplasty Stenting and Pacemaker facilities are available round the clock.Procedures

RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES

STAFF QUARTERS

Well furnished Staff Quarters is provided within the campus as per the MCI Requirement. Purified water is provided. Sufficient number of quarters for covering 100 percent of the total Sr. Residents and Jr. Residents and also for covering at least 20% each of the Nurses, Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff is provided. Good Security for 24 hrs is provided for the Quarter Complex.

HOSTELS

The Medical College provide the Hostel facility for the students within the campus. SNIMS have provision for 75% of the total intake of students at a given time. SNIMS Hostel is a seven storied building and 14 rooms each in every floor. Each Hostel room have two or three occupants (27sq.m). Each person is provided with a chair and a table. Every floor have a reading room and lift facilities. Hostel is provided with a visitors room in the ground floor. Messing facility is also provided. A recreational facility room having T.V. , Gymnasium, Music, Indoor games etc provided.
