Why must we dream in metaphors?

We're trying to hold on to something

we couldn't understand

We need new metaphors.

Factorial Notation

Definition:n! = n•(n-1)•(n-2)•(n-3)• ......•3•2•10! = 1

Examples:4! = 4•3•2•14! = 24

Examples:6! = 6•5•4•3•2•16! = 720

The Triangle Method ...

We use the triangle method when the vectors are arranged tip-to-tail.

Scale: 1 cm = 2 km

Remember, we use measurements with a ruler and protractor to find the "answers."

Identify each of the following quantities as scalar or vector.

scalar vector

(f) The boat was headed N42°W across the lake.

(e) Jess jogged six blocks west along Portage Avenue.

(d) Jeff was driving at 100 km/h for 40 minutes.

(c) Today we had a 30 km/h north wind.

(b) The airplane flew 515 km/h at a bearing of 315°.
