We’d like to say thank you for your wonderful support of our two school fundraisers, the Gala Day and the Walkathon. These two events raised a huge amount for our school which will make a significant difference to the range of things we can offer for our students’ learning and the school environment. And this was matched by your generosity towards the Christchurch community through the mufti day and food donation box. Our Sherwood school families are fabulous. I live on a rural property near Kaukapakapa with my husband of 34 years and a menagerie of animals: cat, dogs, miniature horses and chickens. We don’t have any children but are fortunate to have a large extended family, mostof whom live in the Auckland area. Out of school hours I love to paddleboard, walk (usually doing a couple of halfmarathons each year), read, and travel. I enjoy a bit of genealogy and some work as a volunteer with a dog rescuecentre. So I have a very full and interesting life. This will be our final newsletter before the holidays, so I wish you lots of fun family times. We plan to be back nextterm with a new look newsletter which will be much more userfriendly in its format. It will also have the capacity tobe viewed in many languages a real benefit as we have 18 different first languages in our school community.

WE NEED YOU!

At the end of this term our current Board of Trustee’s term will end and some of the current board will not bestanding for reelection; so we need some new board members to join our group. To whet your appetite, I thought I would list what a School Board of Trustees (BOT) actually does:

The Board of Trustees represents the school’s wider community, including the diverse groups and isaccountable for the performance of the school. The BOT provides strategic leadership, sets the vision for the school, and ensures that it complies withlegal and policy requirements. (Policies are at a governance level and outline clear delegations to theprincipal).

In practice, this involves attending BOT meetings twice a term to review the school’s performance, discuss resourceand staffing concerns, that the school’s budget and finances are being managed responsibly, to discuss someproperty issues (not covered by Ministry of Education) and ensures that the school is compliant with Health andSafety Legislation. Some BOT members are also on committees that meet prior to the main BOT meetings andthey present to the board e.g. finance, property. The BOT only influences the curriculum in the broadest sense and BOT members represent the wider schoolcommunity and not just their own child/family. A BOT provides governance whereas the Principal and hermanagement team manage the school. Being a BOT member is both stimulating and interesting; if your interest is piqued, we are holding an information

Kia ora, Ni hao, Hello, I have the privilege of being your new teacher starting in Term 2. I am so excited to get toknow you all and to be a part of your learning journey at Sherwood Primary School. I believe that learning is alifelong journey and I feel grateful to be able to be a part of shaping and nurturing the lives and learning of the nextgeneration. I am passionate about education and have loved the last 10 years of teaching which I have spent atChelsea Primary School in Birkenhead. I am looking forward to teaching at Sherwood Primary School as it will be alot closer to my home in Albany Heights that is a bonus! I am a separated Mum of two grown up daughters Morgan, who is 26 years old and is currently living in Melbourne and Sally who is 20 years old and is still living withme at home, training to become a Paramedic. I enjoy reading, movies, dance and good food. My latest learningcurve is teaching myself to crochet slouch beanies for my family for winter. I am a qualified Ballroom & LatinAmerican Teacher and Judge (looking forward to watching Dancing with the Stars on tv soon) so dance is mypassion, even though I am not as fit as I used to be! I am looking forward to getting to know all of the children, families and educators here and to be a part of the Sherwood Primary School family. Please come and say helloand if I look lost, please help me to get to where I need to be as I might need some help finding out whereeverything is! Enjoy the upcoming school holidays and I will see you soon.

Safety At The School GateWe would once again like to draw your attention to the issue of safety around our school gate. We have a number oftraffic and parking restrictions in place for the safety of our students. There are a still a number of parents who arenot respecting these and are putting our students in danger. We ask that you please:

Please do not park in the end visitors carpark at pickup and dropoff times. With only limited spaces this createscongestion and blocks the footpath access. In addition, cars coming in and out creates a hazard for students usingthe footpath.

We understand how difficult it is near the school at busy times. Have you considered dropping your child furtheraway on Sartors Avenue and letting them walk to school? Great exercise! Or joining or starting a Walking SchoolBus? Please contact us if this option is of interest to you.

Do Not Park On BrokenYellow LinesThis is illegal as it obscures the view of the crossingand also narrows the roadway at busy times.

Do Not Do U-turns In The Area

Adjacent To The School

Entrance

This is prohibited at all times.

Do Not Wait Longer Than 2

Minutes In The Pick-Up And

Drop-Off Zone

Also, do not leave your car unattended in this zone We suggest that if your child has not arrived withinthat time that you move on and drive around the
