the SPA organisers and all the parents and staff and students who worked hard to make the evening such asuccess. We have some more events to look forward to that as well as being fun, contribute to the school. This week it’s theWalkathon and next week the ShoretoShore. I hope to see lots of you there. Ourr staff and students are also working towards the Goal Setting Interviews, being held on the 3rd and 4th of April. It’s a good time to come along and find out about some key areas of focus for your child’s learning. In closing, the tragic events in Christchurch have caused us all to reflect on many issues, including our toleranceand understanding of difference. Below is a photo on that theme that sums up how I would like us to be as a school.

Information From the Ministry of Education Regarding Measles

OutbreakThere are currently measles outbreaks happening across the world, including here in New Zealand (Canterbury). We have had three cases this year in Auckland. • Measles is a serious disease and symptoms include a high fever, runny nose, cough and sore red eyes, followedby a rash starting behind the ears and spreading to the body a few days later. One in 10 people with measles needhospital treatment and the most serious cases can result in deafness or swelling of the brain. • If you are concerned that your child may be showing signs of this serious illness, please keep them home fromschool and call your doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116. It’s important to call first because measles is highlyinfectious and could infect others in the waiting room. • Students showing signs of illness should also be kept home from activities involving large groups of people suchas school camps, sports events and performance festivals. For information about what to look for and how to protect your child and/or yourself, please visit: www.arphs.health.nz/publichealthtopics/diseaseandillness/measles/ www.arphs.health.nz/news/measlesfaqs/ www.health.govt.nz/yourhealth/conditionsandtreatments/diseasesandillnesses/measles

We will be appointing a new teacher for her Year 4 class to start at thebeginning of Term 2.

Signing In at the Office

During the Day Please sign in at the office when you are visitingduring the day. You cannot walk through the school tosee your child or deliver lunches without first signingin. This is a safety issue for all children and staff. Thisway, in the event of an emergency we know who is onsite at anytime.

End of Day: Before 2.45pm If you arrive before 2.45pm you must sign inand get a visitor's badge at the office. Andthen drop it off before 4.00pm.

Absentees Informing our School

The school will text parents and caregivers regardingany unexplained absences. Please ensure, therefore, that you notify the school of anyabsences before 9.00am. Vital time is spent by ourschool secretary, chasing up unreported absencesevery morning, this can sometimes take up to anhour. This can be done by phone 09 478 3024 option 1, email [email protected] or on our school website under the heading 'ParentCommunication'. If you email your child's teacher, please email theoffice also, as teachers are busy teaching, and don'thave time to read emails during teaching time. Thank you.

WE NEED YOU!

At the end of this term our current Board of Trustee’s term will end and some of the current board will not bestanding for reelection; so we need some new board members to join our group. To whet your appetite, I thought I would list what a School Board of Trustees (BOT) actually does:

The Board of Trustees represents the school’s wider community, including the diverse groups and isaccountable for the performance of the school. The BOT provides strategic leadership, sets the vision for the school, and ensures that it complies withlegal and policy requirements. (Policies are at a governance level and outline clear delegations to theprincipal).

In practice, this involves attending BOT meetings twice a term to review the school’s performance, discuss resourceand staffing concerns, that the school’s budget and finances are being managed responsibly, to discuss someproperty issues (not covered by Ministry of Education) and ensures that the school is compliant with Health andSafety Legislation. Some BOT members are also on committees that meet prior to the main BOT meetings andthey present to the board e.g. finance, property. The BOT only influences the curriculum in the broadest sense and BOT members represent the wider schoolcommunity and not just their own child/family. A BOT provides governance whereas the Principal and hermanagement team manage the school. Being a BOT member is both stimulating and interesting; if your interest is piqued, we are holding an information

meeting for prospective BOT members on Tuesday the 26th March at 1900. Please join us to find out more. With warmest regards Jane Key Chairman of Sherwood Primary School Board of Trustees

Arriving and Leaving School - Safety

You must enter and exit through the main entrance not through car parks. While it may seem easier to get to your vehicle, it is dangerous for children tolearn this way. Deliveries and cars are arriving and leaving and we do not wantto have accidents happen. For yours and your children safety please follow the

path out of the school. This is on going and your help letting other parent /caregivers know who you see doing this will be helpful.
