NOTE FROM THE EDITORHope you all had a good Christmas and are looking forward to a prosperous New Year. Elaine Ryan has some good tips about that on page 4. I’d like to congratulate all the advertisers in this issue for understanding the importance of advertising in a

shrinking market. With a genuine two-month shelf-life the Shannon Scene has proven itself the most cost effective means of reaching every home in Shannon. It will continue to be so in 2009 and regular advertisers will be rewarded with some great deals, so don’t hesitate to give me a ring. This is also the time of year when a lot of you have made New Years resolutions about losing weight and getting fit and there are lots of good options in Shannon, including the enthusiastic ladies at Curves. And on these long dark winter nights, a good way to cheer yourselves up in January would be to go along to the Winter Music Festival in Sixmilebridge and in February go to see Shannon Musical Societies show ‘All Shook Up’ . They both promise to be very entertaining.

It’s the beginning of a New Year, this one bringing a heightened feeling of uncertainty. We have seen a significant increase of fear within people and companies over the last few months. Fear is a strong emotion that seeks to be confirmed it is right and will not enable you to make informed decisions. It is a time to reflect and ask, does the slow down in the economy offer opportunities or threats to you? I guess it is what you choose. Yes we have a choice; we can choose which it will be. If you feel this news offers a threat then take some action - make yourself recession proof. How? It could mean retraining, getting a new job or moving sector. Looking at how you run your business or how you run your life, or a combination of these actions! We have a choice; we can choose which it will be. Through coaching you begin a journey...a journey that enables you to reach those goals and often exceed your wildest dreams. It is a journey of self discovery; it will unlock your potential and will enable you to achieve what you once thought was impossible, eradicating all those fears and doubts on the way... Just ask yourself

what would you embark on if you knew you could not and would not fail??? “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” --Thomas A. EdisonElaine Ryan is a highly experience accredited coach and has worked with individuals and companies in this capacity for a number of years with amazing results. Coaching is proven to contribute to the growth of businesses and to obtaining the company’s goals along with bringing work and life balance. Park AFC was founded in 1972 and have their home grounds located at Riverside Park adjacent to St. Patrick’s Comprehensive School and Cluain Airne. With the completion of the new changing rooms in February this year, the facilities at Riverside Park now consist of changing rooms with four separate dressing rooms, shower facilities, referees room and kitchen area. We have three football pitches - our main pitch, second pitch and schoolboys pitch, in addition to a fully floodlit training area and private car parking. Park AFC play in the Limerick league and have 16 teams, starting at Under 6’s playing non-competitive football all the way up to our 2 junior sides as well as our ladies team. Training takes place each week and for the winter, training will take place in the astro-turf pitches of the GAA club in Shannon. Training for Under 6’s, 7’s, 8’s, 9’s and 10’s takes place on Thursdays at 6:00pm. These times may be subject to change so please check out our website www.parkafc.com for updates. One of the most important aspects of the club is the

continuous training of our underage teams and to this affect we currently have over 20 FAI certified coaches and 3 coaches who have reached UEFA Youth Development level. By maintaining that all our coaches complete these courses, it ensures that underage players are coached to a high standard and as they progress year by year they are also coached in a consistent manner. The end result

of this is that we hope the players increase their enjoyment of playing football and also see their skill levels improve. In order to provide funding for this ongoing training and the day-to-day running of the club, Park hold many fundraising events throughout the year and also have a 300 Club. This

is a draw among the 300 members that takes place each month with prizes of €1000, €100 and €50. We are always looking for new members to the 300 Club draw and for only €10 a month you will be in with a chance to win these great prizes and also help in supporting a local club. If you would like more information on joining the 300 Club or would like any other information please ring 086 8931226.

cLARE SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT SERVIcESupporting Employers - Supporting People with Disabilities

Employers, when recruiting do you look at all options available to you? What would your reaction be if you were asked to consider employing a person with a disability? Would your reaction be based on valid information you have about the abilities of people with disabilities

or assumptions and misinformation picked up over the course of time? Clare Supported Employment Service (CSES) operates locally to address the employment needs of job seekers with a disability and employers, in order to facilitate genuine progress for both groups. Unfortunately people who have a disability are still two and a half times more likely to be unemployed than non-disabled people. “This need not be the case,” comments Alice O’ Carroll, Team Leader with Clare Supported Employment. “We carry out in-depth profiling with candidates. We are then in an excellent position to match candidates with positions available”, she added. The service has successfully placed over 250 candidates with varying disabilities with businesses in County Clare to date.

LEISURE cENTRE cLOSURE FOR REFURBISHMENT

Shannon Leisure Centre will be embarking on major refurbishments in 2009. Work will commence on Jan 3rd and it is regrettable that

the building will have to close to the public for a period of 21 weeks, however this disruption will be for the long term benefit of and the community in the long run by increasing our ability to offer the best product attainable. The good news is that the playground will remain open for the children of our community during this period. It is anticipated to re-open the newly refurbished leisure centre on 2nd June 2009. A lot of ground work has been done over the past number of years by the board of directors, management and employees to raise much needed funds for this project. To date there is a shortfall of over €100,000 which management hope to raise through their continuous fundraising efforts. This extensive €1.3m undertaking includes:· Communal changing village for swimming pool users. This has the added benefit of increased security for our patrons by means of individual changing cubicles and personal lockers· Re-tiling of complete swimming pool area.· Revamped reception area· Café· Ladies and gents changing rooms for gym & hall users· Gym· Lift access to our 1st floor gym· Increased parking· Two state of the art flood lit tennis courts· Skateboard Park.Shannon Swimming & Leisure Centre Co Ltd will continue to offer exceptionally competitive rates to our valued and loyal costumers long in to a bright and prosperous future.

Research overwhelmingly shows that businesses who advertise in a recession increase market share during and after the recession (think about it - if your competitors stop and you keep going, you will pull ahead of them).

Sixmilebridge will be the place to be on the 16th, 17th, and 18th of January next, as crowds gather for the tenth annual Winter Music Weekend. The

packed programme, features many of the acoustic acts who have made the Winter Weekend so special over the last ten years.Top of the bill is a U.S. band, Special Consensus, who will play a concert in the Mill Bar on the Friday night. Playing acoustic concerts in the Courthouse will be singers Kate Purcell and Niamh Parsons, oldtimey stalwarts the Broken String Band, local singer/songwriter Lou McMahon, and shanty singers Kimbers Men from the UK . Making a much-anticipated return after blowing us away in 2004 are Tchobello, a four-piece busking band from Lille in northern France. Cajun and bluegrass heroes Prison Love renew their long-standing relationship with the festival, while blues fans will look forward to seeing Clive Barnes back in the ‘Bridge. Frankie Lane and Paul Kelly play their own special brand of folk/country, i n c l u d i n g a stint at the picker’s session. The UK’s Boat Band will be

remembered and welcomed back by those who saw them in 2007. Dave Saunders and Sean Vaughan will play in session as ever, as will many other local and visiting musicians. A new feature of the festival is the programme of events in the Bunratty. Back in the ‘Bridge, Sunday should be a cracker, with set dancing in the GAA hall, a Classical recital AND a New Music concert in the Courthouse, and the finale that evening with the Josephine Marsh Band headlining, not to mention the sessions all over the village! With more than 35 events on over weekend, music lovers will be spoilt for choice. The hectic schedule of concerts, sessions, and pub gigs will provide enough to satisfy even the most demanding fan of quality acoustic music. What better way to blow away the winter blues! For full details of the programme, see www.wmw.ie or contact Brendan Walsh on 086 846 4509.

SHANNON gRAVEYARD cLEAN UP - cALL FOR HELP!

Shannon Graveyard Maintenance Group was set up in 2002 as a sub-Committee of Shannon Parish Council. The original intention was that we would look after any old graves which were not tidied on a

regular basis. We are fortunate with Illaunamaugh as Clare County Council hire a landscaper to carry out the main cutting of the grass, as it is a lawn Cemetary the grass is easier to cut as there is no kerbing to contend with. There is a great community spirit as all the families with loved ones buried in Illaunamaugh know the families around them & will help keep each others graves clean & tidy. We do ask that families take home any old wreaths/flowers /wrapping with them as there is no rubbish collection from Illaunamaugh. In Lemenagh the caretaker relies on the help of our dedicated volunteers to cut the high grass & maintain the graveyard. From early Spring we have regular clean ups in both Graveyards (March 7th being the first - see next issue for other dates) & we are urgently looking for volunteers to help with these clean ups . If we could get about 30 people to help for each of the clean ups it would mean that the back would be broken with the hard work & great progress would be made. The dates for the clean ups are displayed in both Graveyards by the gates & usually a lot of work would be covered in about 3 hours on the designated Saturday. If you would like any other information or if you are willing to help with the clean ups please contact Nicole Murphy on 087 2102807 so that we can organise a meeting in January to discuss how we will progress in 2009.

Globally, there are 45 million people who are blind and 90% of blindness occurs in the developing world. Three-quarters of all blindness is preventable or curable. The following are two of the 35 poems in the book - the first was written about his grand-daughter who is visually impaired, the second was written about time spent working with his father.

ST AIDANS NATIONAL ScHOOL - 2ND gREEN FLAg

Last year St Aidans School in Ballycasey achieved their first Green Flag by reducing their waste by 80%. This year, 2008/09, they are working on their

2nd Green Flag - for Energy reduction. They have set up a committee again, consisting of children, parents and teachers, who meet once a month to plan one big thing for them to concentrate on to keep their focus. So far this year they have had an energy free day where they were all asked to walk to school and the teachers were asked to carpool. They didn’t use the heat, lights, sockets, tv’s or whiteboards that day, and stayed warm by doing activities in the

yard. In November they had a competition to compose a Green Code rap for the children to learn and recite weekly. In December they did an energy experiment looking at units of energy used in the school, and in the spring they are planning to initiate Walk on Wednesdays (WOW) to encourage the children to walk to school, amongst other things. They are very lucky that one of the parents has knowledge of website design and has been able to update their website, which is now a great resource for parents. The school produces a weekly newsletter which is sent to 50% of parents via email - thus reducing paper waste.

SHANNON cHAMBER A New Year – New Stresses?Learn how to manage them with Shannon ChamberThe excitement of Christmas is over and as we settle back into normal routine once again and plot our courses of action for 2009, it’s most likely that at some stage, we will get ourselves into a tizzy and a little bit stressed out wondering how to keep all parts of our lives working in harmony. Not an easy challenge considering the daily demands placed on most of our shoulders in these fast moving times.Take note however, that there are people out there who can help us manage our stress, and whether we want to admit it or not, there are very few people who can escape this phenomenon; it’s pretence to admit otherwise. To help us give this whole area some thought and to work out a system for managing stress, Shannon Chamber has come to the rescue by organising a ‘Stress Management’ breakfast briefing which will be held on 15 January. Full details were not available at the time of going to press but watch their website’s events section www.shannonchamber.ie. This should be a very enlightening seminar. Places will be limited so if you want to be there, you’re advised to book early. The seminar is open to member and non-members alike but if you are interested in becoming a member, simply contact one of the team at: SkyCourt Shannon on 061 360611.

SIT ‘N KNIT cIRcLE STARTINg UPAnyone interested in helping to form a Sit n’ Knit circle in Shannon please contact Mary Somers (Evenings on 061 719809 ).Meet, mingle and trade yarns with local knitters (including

crocheting or tapestry)! Come to a Knitters Meetup and have fun comparing patterns, sharing techniques and trading tips on stitches. This will be a social group dedicated to bringing people together to share in their love of sticks and yarn. The goal is to meet several times a month in different venues and spend a couple of hours happily working on a project. Come to one or come to all! The Knitalongs as well as good ol’ gatherings to chat and knit will provide a friendly atmosphere where we can all share in the pleasure of knitting, as well as help each other with a pattern or project, yarn swap, and of course show off your handmade goods.

Shannon Golf Club have received the coveted award of Munster Club of the Year 2008. This award was in recognition of the club’s outstanding team work, hospitality and professionalism during the hosting of the 2008 European Men’s Senior Team Championship which was acknowledged by all the visiting teams, their officials and visitors. The inclement weather that arrived the week of the Championship put Shannon Golf Club very much to the test and to their eternal credit showed to all that the weather was just not going to beat them. The course staff performed outstandingly and demonstrated how you can beat the weather and present a great golf course each day. The catering and bar staff also got high accolades and again were highly praised by all during the week.

Overall, the team work and performance of everyone involved under the direction of the General Manager, Michael Corry, 2008 Captain, Billy O’ Sullivan and 2009

Captain Michael O’ Connor under such pressure is indeed a tribute to Shannon Golf Club. The Captain of Shannon Golf Club, Michael O’ Connor accepted the award on behalf of the club and thanked the Officers, Members and Staff of Shannon Golf Club for their contribution in winning this prestigious honour. I get up at about 7.30 every morning, go down to the kitchen to make some breakfast and take it back to bed until 8.30 when I hear the front door close behind my son and daughter who have left for work. I then get up and have a shower and shave and I either go to Mass at Mary Immaculate at 9.30 or at the Oratory at 10.00.

I get to the Town Council offices (beside the fire station) by 10.30 and check the post. The Town Clerk job has always been part time, it takes up 2-3 hours of my time every day. I took it on in 1982 to supplement my income as, with nine children at home, it was difficult for the older ones to study, so I sent them to boarding school. When I left school after my Leaving Cert in 1954 (I went to Flannan’s in Ennis) I worked in Shannon airport for 6 years in the Duty Free. I then took a leave of absence from work to go to London for 6 months, which turned into 3 years. While in London I worked for London Transport and also as a wages clerk with several building firms. I also attended night classes and trained in data processing and systems analysis.I returned home in December 1962 and was offered a job as Accounts Payable Officer in EI (a branch of General Electric) where I worked for 5 years before moving to Lana Knit when they computerised their system. I met my wife in 1957 when she was only 15, her sister married my brother in 1960 but Eithne and I did not start

dating until August 1963 and we got married in 1965. Tragically she died in 1994 of a heart attack. My life was always for my family and even more so since Eithne died. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for any of them.I worked at Lana Knit for 20 years until it closed down in 1987, and spent the next 10 years until retirement working as a Revenue Collector. At around 2pm I go home for a light lunch and read the paper for a while. I go back to the office around 3pm and then put my Commissioner of Oaths hat on and visit several solicitors who might need affidavits signed. I took up golf when I retired and joined Shannon Golf Club. I am also a member a the Shannon Town Golf Society and we play in different courses around Ireland (a different one about once a month). I am also a member of the Shannon Twinning Association. We have monthly meetings and in the New Year will be planning our next trip to Guincamp in September. I have been there many times over the years, at first with the Twinning Association but I made some very good friends over there and travel to visit them occasionally and they visit me here in Shannon. Unfortunately I am not a linguist and never mastered the French language but luckily they all speak good English. In the evening I either cook for myself at home or else go out for a meal, and then, for a bit of a social life I sometimes go to the GAA to meet some friends.Another thing I was involved in was the Shannon Tsunami Project, who undertook to provide the village of Pottisubbiah Palem, in Sri Lanka with fresh water. The cost of this project was estimated at $16,756. The Shannon Tsunami Project raised in excess of €10,000 which was given to GE volunteers in that area who got sponsorship for the balance and installed the pipes for the fresh water supply together with a fresh water tower. If I don’t go out in the evening I enjoy reading and usually head off to bed around 10.30 or 11.00 after a hot toddy. I watch TV for a while and never have any trouble sleeping. It must be my clear conscience!
