GIFT AMOUNT $
This year, for the first time in anyone’s memory, Chanukah started on the night before Thanksgiving. This surprising convergence actually made
sense. After all, both holidays are about gratitude for what we’ve received … and showing our gratitude by giving to others food, gifts
and sustenance from our heart. In fact, many of us shopped and cooked for days to prepare the perfect meal to share.
Today, let’s consider a different menu – one that can truly ignite our spirit and bring miracles to so many in need.
This Chanukah, serve an extra helping of Thanks

When the holidays sneak up on us - as they so often do, sweltered by Florida’s heat and humidity - it can be challenging to feel prepared for theseason. But with Hanukkah arriving early this year, our gift lists cannot be ignored.
As we compiled this year’s Holiday Issue, we’re reminded of the old age phrase, “it’s better to give than receive.”
Getting wrapped up in the holiday spirit, local volunteers yarn-bombed trees near FAT Village, captured by photographer Kara Starzyk. And while wedon’t have snow here, the Panthers hockey team shared the ice to celebrate the holiday of lights, taken by photographer Gina Fontana on page 16.
Profiling Broward-based philanthropists in a fun mad-libs format on page 14, we get a peek into the values of these selfless individuals and whatinspires them to give back.
And for those of you who are still making that list (and checking it twice) the gift guide on pages 20-21 features products that benefit charity. So youcan give back while giving this holiday season.
Additional ways to do so can be accomplished by attending local holiday events presented in our calendar and featured stories. Another way to giveback while shopping this season is to pick up toys for underprivileged children in Broward; page 25 features a listing of local toy drives.
Because of your selfless acts, we’re reminded daily that all we want for the holidays is world peace (well, that and a new pair of boots wouldn’t hurt).
While wrapping up the production of the issue, photographer James Argyropoulos captured us entangled in our own festivities.
When this issue went to press, we were basking in our post-turkey haze, freshly full of gratitude and what’s really important in life. This is why we’d like totake a moment to thank you - our readers - for being loyal followers and for giving so much back to the community we call home. One of the best parts ofour job here at Society Scene is the daily reminder of our community’s generosity; because the most valuable gifts are those that are invaluable.

For nearly 17 years, I’ve served as theCEO for LifeNet4Families, formerlyThe Cooperative Feeding Program Inc.
I spent my days working with people in need, learning their stories, and seeing first-handhow poverty and hunger destroys the lives ofchildren, seniors and all the ages in between. You can’t simply hand someone a box of food. You have to understand why they are there.Only then can we work together, with thehelp of an informed community, to right thatwrong. So I’d like to take this opportunity toshare the stories of some of our neighborswho have been helped by the generosity ofour community in their greatest time of needand put a face to the issues of hunger, poverty, homelessness, etc.
Sen was let go from her job after five years of consistent employment. Herboss said that random background checks had found an infraction ten years agoin her past and for that he had to discharge her. Sen lost her apartment and usedmoney from her daughter’s disability check to pay for nights on friends’ couchesto keep her family from ending up in a shelter or on the street. Someone directedSen to LifeNet4Families. When she arrived, she was despondent. Life had beatenher up so badly she had almost given up her fight. Here, we helped her prep foremployment. We helped her locate employers who were hiring and we helpedher dress for success. In collaboration with several other partnering charities,we helped her get shoes, a uniform and bus passes. After only three interviews,Sen was hired as a private duty home health care worker for a nice family. Herhousing fell into place about the same time. We continue to look in on Sen and herchildren. We’ve registered them for holiday gifts and they now come here for ourweekly fresh produce day and for their monthly food box. Sun Sentinel Children’sFund, a McCormick Foundation fund, helped pay her move in costs to start hernew life.
With the assistance of the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, LifeNet4Familieshelped Dee pay her rent when she found herself short of funds. Dee is a womanto be admired. She took her sister’s two children in and raised them as her own.Since her sister gave birth to a baby who tested positive for drugs 15 years ago, from that moment on, she has been the only mother her sister’s children haveknown. Once the boys were 15 and 18 years old, Dee decided to go back toschool. With the help of student loans, Dee took classes to become a nurse. Sheliked the feeling of helping others. Unfortunately, not all the student loans came inas planned and Dee had to use her rent to cover the difference. That unexpectedexpenditure made it impossible to get her rent paid, so she arrived at LifeNetseeking support. Because of our partnership with the Sun Sentinel Children’sFund, we had the resources to assist Dee with her rent. We helped set herchildren up for holiday toys and clothing, and registered her for ongoing help withfood and fresh produce. Dee saved the lives of a sick new born and his three-year-old brother 15 years ago. It was good to be able to do something for her inher time of need.
In the spirit of the holidays, I hope that by sharing these stories I can inspireothers to give – of their time volunteering, money, talents, or simply by takingthe time to read stories like this to learn more about the issues prevalent in ourcommunity and show how giving can truly change someone’s path in life.

‘TIS THE SEASON
I fell in love with HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth) almost 20 years ago when one of my Guardian ad Litem families needed more than justrepresentation in court. They needed food, clothing, Christmas presents and tutoring/mentoring for their middle school children. I turned to HANDY, and their wonderful supportstaf f got involved, which resulted in the family having a wonderful Christmas. The case managers helped get the family stabilized and back on their feet. Since then, I have proudly
served on the board of the organization and HANDY’s remarkable staf f and board has helped thousands of families regain stability.
The greatest gift one can give is giving of oneself in order to help change the lives of others.
When I think of the holidays I think of my family, friends, my Guardian ad Litem children and my HANDY youth. I also think of my parents who gave so much ofthemselves to help others.
My holiday mood was set when I joined the volunteers and HANDY staf f to honor 300 youth and their caregivers at Holiday Park for the HANDY “Family Thanksgiving.”I was filled with pride as I experienced the metamorphosis of our children into self confident, strong, and well-educated youth. Through the tireless devotion of our staf f, the
transformation has been possible. The youth will be able to achieve their dreams and be the future leaders of tomorrow.
My favorite thing about the holiday season in South Florida is being with our grandchildren, Hannah and Benjamin (twins).
This holiday season I’m obsessed with shopping for the children - my Guardian ad Litem children, HANDY kids, JAFCO, etc.
The cause I care most about is children’s welfare, education and the opportunity to succeed in life. It warms my heart because all children are our future.

I fell in love with community service organizations when I realized the needs of our community’s
children and youth.
The greatest gift one can give is time, commitment, devotion and influence.
When I think of the holidays I think of all people and their opportunity to celebrate their special feelings, to
respect one another and work together.
I set the holiday mood with family and friends.
My favorite thing about the holiday season in South Florida is the opportunity for the rest of the world to come
and warm up in our sun and sand.
This holiday season I’m obsessed with continuing to improve the lives of all our children and youth
who need our special support.

The season of giving hasofficially kicked off, andthere’s no gift that goes
further and stays closer than adonation to the Sun SentinelChildren’s Fund’s annualHoliday Campaign. Thecampaign, running throughDecember 31, raisesmuch-needed funds to supportlocal nonprofit programsthroughout the year. Theseprograms provide an array ofservices that help movelow-income children andfamilies into self-sufficiency.
In 1990, the Sun Sentinelexpanded its long-term supportof helping those in need inBroward and Palm Beachcounties and partnered with theRobert R. In addition, the SunSentinel and the Foundation pay
all administrative and campaignexpenses, so 100 percent of everygift, plus the match, go directlyto support local children andfamilies in need.
The Sun Sentinel Children’sFund is committed to helpingthose less fortunate in ourcommunity improve their livesand break the cycle of poverty. With the generous support ofdonors and matching fundsprovided by the McCormickFoundation, grants are made toqualified nonprofitorganizations with programs

“Children’s Harbor’s Residential Foster Care Program keepstogether brothers and sisters while in the foster care system, as wellas foster pregnant or parenting teens with their babies. We worktherapeutically with the children to address issues from the past, and work toward a healthy and happy future. Children’s Harbor alsomoves each child and teen forward academically, and strives tobreak to the cycle of abuse and neglect. Children’s Harbor greatlyvalues the generous support through the Sun Sentinel Children’sFund. It costs $100 to provide a foster child with one night of safetywith their brothers and sisters in one of our sibling homes.
