SHANNON SCENE - the local magazine for shannon

Don’t listen to people who say you shouldn’t vote. This is misguided nonsense. Voters make things happen. If you want change, you must vote. Here are five good reasons.1. Everyone is equal on Election day – we all have one vote - the richest and most powerful - the poorest and disadvantaged.2. It gives you the right to complain. We are responsible

for the kind of politicians we get - you have no right to complain if you don’t participate in the election.

3. People have died to secure the right to vote, literally died. Voting is an extraordinarily important right--not just a chore. In some countries some people still do not have the right. In Ireland we should exercise our right.4. Because every vote matters. Elections have been changed based on just a few votes. In the 2002 General Election in Cork South-Central, Kathy Sinnott (Ind) lost by 6 votes to John Dennehy (FF) on the 10th count. In the same General Election in Limerick West Dan Neville won by one vote and Michael Finucane lost by one vote.5. Each and every vote is the voice of an Irish Citizen. One voice speaking out can change the course of history.ONE VOTE CAN AND WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

ONE VOTE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE - TOP FIVE REASONS TO VOTE

We rarely find ourselves in situations where an action we take can cause something major to happen, but that is exactly the position you will find yourself in as you stand over a ballot paper with a little pencil in your hand on the 25th February.Think carefully! The box you choose to tick will help determine a course of action that will directly affect your life and those of your loved ones for years, perhaps generations to come. It really is that important. I don’t ask for your trust lightly. I wouldn’t ask for it or even be contesting this election if I wasn’t utterly convinced that the policies we have put forward are the correct ones, if not the only ones, to get this country working again. This election is about national issues and most importantly the economy. We will create an environment where jobs are protected and created. Did you know that if every small business in the country created just one new job, we would half numbers of people currently unemployed! We will keep tax as low as possible. We will create a completely new health system - one that actually works. We will streamline government

agencies and cut out inefficiencies, saving billons and at the same time protecting frontline public sector jobs. We will reduce the number of politicians and put a ceiling on higher public sector salaries. It really will be a total change. No doubt, it will be very difficult but we are determined to see it through.Of course we have our local and regional issues too and

none bigger than protecting and growing Shannon Airport. No candidate is better placed than me in this election to fight for Shannon. I live here. I work here. I employ people here. Other candidates talk a lot about Shannon airport, because they think it will generate votes, but I know the Airport and the real behind-the-scenes issues involved. Many of you will already

know me as a guy with an open door and a willingness to help where I can. That won’t change. In fact now you will have a guy who can carry your issues all the way to Dail Eireann. It’s about time Shannon had a TD of its own. When was it ever more important? Use your power. Vote for change. Vote for a Shannon TD. Vote Tony Mulcahy.

SHANNON SCENE - the local magazine for shannon

Shannon Gospel Choir is celebrating only their second birthday later this month. It doesn't seem too long ago when they got together to nervously bring Gospel music to Shannon. They weren't quite sure how it would be received, but were

delighted with the reaction from the people of Shannon.Over the past two years they have gone from strength to strength, singing at masses all around the Shannon region, supporting the Harlem Gospel Choir a couple of times, and they were invited to have their own gig in Dolans (Limerick) last April after singing there with Paddy Casey a few months previous. They have also performed at charity fundraisers, concerts and for the last two years have entertained guests at all The Limerick Strand Hotel's Christmas party nights Most recently, the choir appeared live on RTE1 television in the middle of January singing in a mass celebrated by Fr Harry Bohan, parish priest of Sixmilebridge.Viewership figures for this program are quoted to be like being in front of a full Croke Park, but there wasn't time to get nervous. It all went smoothly and the Choir were delighted with the feedback from RTE, and all the text messages from friends, family and total strangers!.SGC are now gearing up for their next big challenge. They have been asked to be the support act for Paul Brady, as he brings his current tour to the Oakwood Arms in Shannon on Saturday the 23rd April. Paul Brady is an internationally renowned and respected Singer/Songwriter and multi instrumentalist, and the people of Shannon are in for a real treat. SGC are really looking forward to the experience and it's a chance to perform in Shannon in a relaxed setting. Call the Oakwood Arms on 061 361500 for further details.

The Festival (4 - 6 March) is a wonderful social and literary gathering for book club members and readers. Supported by Clare County Library, the festival includes author readings, discussions, workshops and walking tours, advice on running book clubs, on reading lists, and an opportunity to meet with other Book Club members. The programme will includes authors’ readings, lectures, music, workshops, exhibitions and more. We are keen to give book clubs an eclectic mix that reflects the reading passions of many, so our programmes have a very broad brief. We include poetry, drama, historical, food, political, crime and memoir writing as well as fiction. Irish language book clubs are also catered for with sessions as gaeilge. Did you know that the first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place not in Ireland

but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched

through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their music,

the parade helped the soldiers reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as

fellow Irishmen serving in the English army. Today, nearly

three million people line the 1.5-mile parade route to watch the procession, which takes more than five hours. We don’t get quite that many people watching the parade in Shannon but over the past few years it has certainly grown in size and popularity with new groups joining in every year. This year one of the new entrants will be the Shannon Traditional Boat Building Club. Their entry will be a currrach which ferried goods to the Aran Islands. There will also be all the old favourites including the very colourful Midwest Indian/Irish Association, Ballycasey Craft Centre, marching bands, including the Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band, Ennis Brass Band and the CBS, the Scouts and the Taekwon-Do Club. The parade will start, as it has for the past 2 years, on the Link Road, past St Caimins School. The parade will then proceed up Sli na Mara and onto the Town Centre where the festivities will carry on. Let’s hope the weather is as good as it has been for the past two years. If anyone would like to participate please contact Mike Fleming on 087 6140550 as soon as possible.

ST PATRICKS DAY PARADE

NEw ‘MEET AND PLAY’ GROuPAnyone interested in getting together with others with their musical instruments e.g. guitar, keyboard, fiddle, etc should contact Mary on 086 6024445. The idea is that people who want to become more

motivated to practice get together regularly to play and practice together and be encouraged by others

to play and improve their interest. It is also a way of allowing people to have fun with their

music while putting their classes into action.
