WHAT’S HAPPENING AT MLC?

IMPORTANT HIGH HOLIDAY UPDATE - This year we will be taking security for the High Holidays especially serious. The new Infrastructure Committee has instituted a new policy where all guests MUST show their tickets at the door. Please make sure that you bring your tickets with you each day that you attend to prevent any issues. Please also note that if you bring any large purses, backpacks, etc. that they will be checked at the door this year.

Kiddush Helpers Wanted! - The MLC Kitchen Club (yes, that’s a thing) is looking for a few good men and women who want to help setup/serve/clean up the kitchen for kiddush. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn a little about our “new” kitchen and see happy congregants on Shabbat. For furtherinformation or to put your name on the list, please email Caren Rubin, Head Mashgiach, at [email protected].

Save the Date for the Martini & Sushi Party on September 15! - For more details on attending & sponsoring this fundraiser visit https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=aCWrnt or see the flyer in the e-Scroll or sanctuary foyer.

ATTENTION ALL OF YOU WHO LIKE TO CLEAN: IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN - Time to polish the silver! This project will take place on Monday, September 16 at 9am. If you would like to pariticpate, please contact CIndy Swartz at [email protected] or 916-664-7438.

Selichot Film: Won’t You Be My Neighbor - Saturday, September 21 at 9pm in KOH. Many of us grew up either watching or having our children and grandchildren watch Fred Rogers who captivated us with life lessons on the PBS program “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood”. We invite the entire congregation to join together for a viewing of an award winning 95-minute documentary about Fred Rogers titled “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” on Selichot night as we prepare for our High Holydays. This documentary takes us beyond the PBS show that nurtured our children, and serves as one of the best illustrations of how we might answer the question that we ponder each High Holyday season: “How, now, shall I live my life?” Mr. Rogers’ mission and messages are fundamentally Jewish concepts. Judaism teaches that each of us was created as a unique and singular individual, created in G-d’s image. We are each here for a purpose that is uniquely ours. Rabbi Taff will facilitate a discussion following the film and he has planned a special short video to follow the discussion.Following the film and discussion please plan to stay for the traditional changing of the Torah Mantels at 11:15 PM, followed by an inspiring Selichot Service at 11:30 PM that will be conducted by Rabbi Taff, Hazzan Rosner and the Mosaic Law Choir.

Niggun Circle - Thursday, September 5 from 7pm-8:30pm. B’nai Israel chapel, 3600 Riverside Blvd. Come experience the beautiful, calming, and transformative experience of a group joining voices together in niggunim, or wordless Jewish melodies. We will gather and nosh a little, sing with interspersed periods of quiet, and then mingle some more. You don’t have to be “musical” or know any of the tunes ahead of time; a niggun circle is about creating music together as a community, enjoying our collective voices, and quiet contemplation. If you have a niggun you love and want to lead it, bring it! If you just want to close your eyes, listen and take in the melodies, that’s great too. This event is co-hosted by Kol Rinah and Congregation B’nai Israel. Email [email protected] with any questions.

KOH Book Club Discussion Group: The Fruit of Her Hands: the Story of Shira Askenaz by Michelle Cameron - Wednesday, September 18 at 1:30pm. Vividly bringing to life a period rarely covered in historical fiction, this multi-generational novel will appeal to readers who enjoy Maggie Anton’s Rashi’s Daughters, Brenda Rickman Vantrease’s The Illuminator, and Geraldine Brooks’s People of the Book.Based on the life of the author’s thirteenth-century ancestor, Meir ben Baruch of Rothenberg, a renowned Jewish scholar of medieval Europe, this is the richly dramatic fictional story of Rabbi Meir’s wife, Shira, a devout but rebellious woman who preserves her religious traditions as she and her family witness the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe.Raised by her widowed rabbi father and a Christian nursemaid in Normandy, Shira is a free-spirited, inquisitive girl whose love of learning shocks the community. When Shira’s father is arrested by the local baron intent on enforcing the Catholic Church’s strictures against here-sy, Shira fights for his release and encounters two men who will influence her life profoundly—an inspiring Catholic priest and Meir ben Baruch, a brilliant scholar. In Meir, Shira finds her soulmate.Married to Meir in Paris, Shira blossoms as a wife and mother, savoring the intellectual and social challenges that come with being the wife of a prominent scholar. After witnessing the burning of every copy of the Talmud in Paris, Shira and her family seek refuge in Germany. Yet even there they experience bloody pogroms and intensifying anti-Semitism. With no safe place for Jews in Europe, they set out for Israel only to see Meir captured and imprisoned by Rudolph I of Hapsburg. As Shira weathers heartbreak and works to find a middle ground between two warring religions, she shows her children and grandchildren how to embrace the joys of life, both secular and religious.Everyone is welcome, including drop-ins. For more information contact Valla Hoffman at 916-743-8247 or [email protected].

Mosaic Law Congregation Event in KOH: Hand in Hand - Bridging the Divide with Guest Speaker Lee Gordon - Saturday, September 7 during MLC Shabbat service & at 1pm in KOH. Bridging the Divide has the mission of building peace, coexistence and partnership between Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel through Hand in Hand’s integrated schools. Now with six schools and close to 2,000 Arab and Jewish students enrolled, Hand in Hand offers a hopeful path for bridging the divide between the two communities in conflict.
