Traffic calming measures were popularized in Europe in the 1970s thus coined the dutch term woonerf as areaction to the growing dominance of automobile over bicycles. Blurring the boundary between street and sidewalk, woonerfs combined innovative paving, landscaping and other urban designs to allow for the integration ofpedestrians, cyclists and slow-moving cars. It uses combination of mainly physical measures that reduce thenegative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behavior and improve conditions for non-motorized street cars

    Woonerf translates roughly as

"street for living," it was first

employed in 1976 Netherlandby Dutch traffic engineer Hans

    Monderman, a streetscape

    stripped of lane markers,

    curbs, sidewalks, zebra

    crossings and other obvious

    boundaries denoting spaces

    meant for single forms of

    transportation. Downtown

    areas were then converted to

    pedestrian areas. Although it

    might seem counterintuitive,

    this integration naturally

    altered driving behavior and

    reduced the number of

    accidents across Europe.

_travel time and distance for all users are

    increased

_local residents are diverted to other streets,

visitors and delivery services are confused and

    delayed

_emergency vehicle response can be delayed

    effectiveness:

+ overall vehicle traffic volumes decreased,

    particularly on the community streets.

+ vehicular traffic coming into the area

    decreased.

+ pedestrian and bicycle traffic volumes rose

along most routes.+ average vehicle speeds fell by 3.5 km/hr (2

mi/hr), with a much greater fall in the

    maximum speed of cars

+ parked cars became less intrusive.

+ traffic accidents fell from 32 in the 4 years prior

to the project to just two in the First 2 years

    following implementation.

    Traffic calming techniques are exercised

along broadway which tends to create

traffic as it intersect with crossing

avenues, blockage improve the flow of

    traffic by reconnecting the grid.

    In downtown manhattan, turns are

eliminated by filling the streets with

    pedestrian malls to control traffic.

    times square 42nd:

broadway is closed to vehicles from 47th Street to 42nd

Street. Traffic would continue to flow through on crossing

streets, but the areas between the streets would become

pedestrian malls, with chairs, benches and cafe tables with

    umbrellas.
