ALICE IN WONDERLAND

ALICE: Should I or shouldn't I? You know what they say: "If you don't explore, you'll never

discover." But my sister Mathilda always says, "Look before you leap." Well, I'm looking and it

looks pretty deep and dark and I can't see the bottom and maybe it goes all the way to the

center of the earth and I'll be burnt to a crisp in the molten core like the bad marshmallow

we've all heard so much about! (pause) Or not. (pause) Ok, I looked. Now it's time to leap!

(ALICE jumps down the rabbit hole and falls a long way. Her dress acts as a parachute.)

END OF MONOLOGUE

THE LION KING

SIMBA: Hey Uncle Scar, guess what! I'm going to be king of Pride Rock. My Dad just showed

me the whole kingdom, and I'm going to rule it all. Heh heh. I’m gonna be a mighty king so

enemies beware. I’m working on my roar. Here, listen! (roar) I can’t wait to be king! No one

bossing me around… Free to play all day... Free to do it all my way! Hey, Uncle Scar? When

I'm king, what will that make you?

END OF MONOLOGUE

DID YOU KNOW...?The Wells Theatre is so old that some say it is haunted! There have been many ghost sightings throughout the building over the years - some even reported from the current Wells Theatre tenant, the Virginia Stage Company!

LET’S PUT ON A PLAY!Spend a few minutes getting into character and traveling to make-believe lands

with these fun monologues, or speeches written for ONE actor. Most of the words are spoken aloud, but words written like this (in italics) should be acted, not spoken!

LET’S PUT ON A PLAY!TWO FUSSY FROGSBy Phyllis J. Perry

CAST OF CHARACTERS

TAYLOR – A timid, but curious frog who lives on the banks of the Elizabeth River

JAMIE – A brave frog with a big appetite who lives on the banks of the Elizabeth River

AT RISE: It is late morning and the two frogs are sitting in Town Point Park talking with one another.

TAYLOR: I wonder where all the flies are today? And the gnats and dragonflies. I need to catch something to

eat soon. I’m starving. Croak-croak.

JAMIE: Ribbit. I’m hungry, too, but I’m awfully tired of flies and worms and crawly insects. Breakfast, lunch,

and dinner–that’s all we ever get. Ribbit.

TAYLOR: Remember that last week we found a school of tiny fish. They were very tasty. Croak-croak.

JAMIE: I remember. Ribbit-ribbit. But we’re not often that lucky. And the kids I see playing in the park, and

the people who come for what they call ‘picnics’ seem to have all sorts of exciting things to eat. Why not us?

TAYLOR: (Wistfully) Yeah. Some of the things I see them eating do look awfully interesting. But that’s people

food, I guess, and we’re frogs. Croak-croak.

JAMIE: Say, I have an idea. Ribbit-ribbit. Instead of swimming out to the lily pads to the middle of the lake

when people come today, why don’t we hide in these cattails close to shore. Maybe we can find a way to get

some of those good looking things to eat.

TAYLOR: Sounds dangerous to me. Croak-croak. What if the people have one of those awful dogs with

them? One came running after me last night. It even followed me clear out into the lake!

JAMIE: He couldn’t catch you though, could he? Ribbit-ribbit.

TAYLOR: Of course not. But he scared me. Croak-croak.

JAMIE: People aren’t supposed to let their dogs

run loose here in the park, but I know sometimes

they do. Ribbit-ribbit. We won’t go near

anyone with a dog. Promise.
