DEAR FRIENDS, We are delighted to welcome you to the Center for the Performing Arts! In May, we announced a fabulous season, packed with world-class artists. From classical pianist Lang Lang to country great Merle Haggard, the new season is filled with artists you’ll want to see live and in-person. We followed the big season announcement with another major addition: the legendary Diana Ross is coming to the Palladium stage on August 23. Take a few minutes to discover the season inside these pages or go to the Center’s website for additional details at TheCenterPresents.org. As we head into our summer programming, we invite you to start a tradition with your family. Bring your children and grandchildren to see the innovative – and interactive – Erth’s Dinosaur Petting Zoo (June 13-16). You and your family will marvel at these elaborate puppets and the mastery behind the petting zoo. The family lineup this summer gives you a taste of things to come in our 2013-14 family series. We encourage you to share these magical moments together, as a family. This month we kick-off our 2013 Encore Celebration Gala Weekend! There will be everything from a gourmet meal and auction, to live music, performances, and dancing. Plus, the Center along with the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative will induct a new class in the Songbook Hall of Fame. This year we are honoring the contributions of Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Jimmy Webb and Rita Moreno. Join us June 28 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom and June 29 at the Palladium. As you plan your summer activities, include a visit to the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Gallery. The gallery continues its exhibit “Blast for the Past: Roaring Hot ‘20s Jazz.” Located on the Palladium’s gallery level, this interactive display of memorabilia and recorded music pays homage to the celebrated artists of the jazz age and its place in Indiana history. Visit the gallery on weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm.

You also will want to enjoy a performance by one of our resident companies sauch as Legends of Love presented by Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre or Civic Theatre’s Young Adult Program production of Anything Goes.

IN THE NEWS WriteStuff literary conference - July 20 WriteStuff Writers Conferences and the Center for the Performing Arts present “Across the Arts: A Gleeful Literary Celebration.” Join Indiana’s finest filmmakers, best-selling New York Times authors, award-winning newspaper journalists, columnists, magazine writers, editors, publishers and musicians. The guests will be featured in a Writer’s Studio on the Palladium concert hall stage. The day-long event concludes with an after-party and movie screening.

The literary panels are formatted as a Writer’s Studio, allowing ample time to get up-close-and-personal as the guests share private reflections during an audience Q&A. Meet award-winning filmmakers including Angelo Pizzo, Academy-Award winner for “Hoosiers,” and Michael Husain, 13 time documentary award-winning film director, writer and producer. Authors and film professionals will be at autograph tables with signings scheduled throughout the day.

General admission for the July 20 event is $60 and includes access to the after-party and movie presentation by Heartland Film Festival. General admission for seniors is $40 and students are $18 (with school ID). Tickets are on sale at the Palladium Box Office, by phone at 317.843.3800 or online at TheCenterPresents.org.

The Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition Kicks-Off! The Great American Songbook High School Vocal Competition kicked off the first round of Regional Events on May 11 at Georgia State University. Seven students participated for a chance to come to the Palladium for the Final Vocal Academy & Competition July 21-26. The two winners of the Southeast Regionals are Melinda Rodriguez from Miami, FL and Maya Jacobson from Clearwater, FL. There are four more Regional Events taking place throughout the month of June, so stay updated on Facebook (/FeinsteinInitiative) to meet more Vocal Competition finalists! A special thank you to Van Heusen Music Corp. for their support of the regional events.

Bookies Take Over Palladium Stage The Palladium Bookies is a book group dedicated to reading and discussing books about the performing arts. They meet on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7pm. The meetings begin with registration and a short time of mingling (wine, water and snacks are served) before breaking into discussion groups in various meeting rooms in The Palladium. Discussions are lively and lots of fun! Participation each month is limited to the first 60 to register.

THE TWO BEST NIGHTS OF YOUR LIFE! The Center for the Performing Arts and the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative announce an expanded weekend lineup for the annual fundraising gala. The 2013 Encore Celebration Gala Weekend presented by Krieg DeVault is now two nights – Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29. The Friday evening event, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis, includes a First Merchants Bank cocktail reception, Kreig DeVault dinner, dance and auction, with the Saturday evening Songbook Hall of Fame performance and induction ceremony at the Palladium in Carmel.

The Saturday evening of the gala weekend will feature host Michael Feinstein, Broadway and television star Megan Hilty performing a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli, television legend Jimmy Smits and guitar virtuoso Jose Feliciano honoring Rita Moreno, and vocalist Tom Wopat performing songwriter Jimmy Webb’s hits. Together, the artists will honor the inductees’ musical contributions to the Great American Songbook. Saturday evening will include pre-show cocktails and a post-show after party sponsored by Katz, Sapper & Miller.

The 2013 awards include: Legend: Awarded posthumously to an artist who made a significant contribution to the Golden Age of American popular music, typically defined as the period from the early years of the 20th century through the 1960s. Inductees: Frank Sinatra, 2013; Cole Porter, 2012.

Songbook: Awarded to living songwriters, both lyricists and composers, who have made a significant impact on American pop culture by creating the most beloved songs from the American popular songbook. Inductees: Jimmy Webb, 2013; Alan and Marilyn Bergman, 2012.

New Standard: Awarded to the artist, songwriter and/or performer, who continues to create the soundtrack of our lives by writing and/or performing music that will stand the test of time and become the pop standards of tomorrow. Inductee: Liza Minnelli, 2013; Rita Moreno, 2013; Barry Manilow, 2012.

SOMETHING TO ROAR ABOUT!We sunk our claws into Scott Wright, the Artistic Director of Erth, who is bringing Dinosaur Petting Zoo to the Center this month (June 13–16.) This is what he had to say about dinos, puppets and feeding children to the dinosaurs!How do you make the dinosaur puppets in Dinosaur Petting Zoo come to life?

The great thing about puppetry is that it’s an art form that hinges on bringing the inanimate to life. All of our dinosaurs are carefully crafted puppets and the puppeteers are masterful at operating them.

We always tell our audience that our dinos are puppets, but you can be sure that within minutes they have forgotten what we’ve said and they instantly suspend their disbelief… People want to believe that they are real. Our puppeteers have to be able to operate a puppet externally and internally, meaning that sometimes they may handle the puppet from outside of the puppet and sometimes they also have to climb inside to operate it. It’s kind of a cross between The Muppets and War Horse!

What’s your favorite dinosaur?

My favourite dinosaur at the moment is Australovenator – a dinosaur was discovered in Australia just four years ago. This great dinosaur has anatomical differences to other theropods – it’s got larger feet and arms that are almost equal to a human’s. It can run very fast and captures its prey with its huge claws.

Is it scary coming up on stage to pet the dinosaurs?

I think it’s scary watching the news, so I’d say it’s matter of personal opinion as to what is scary and what’s not! When we invite children onto stage with us, we do our best to ensure that they are brave and understand that the dinos are puppets. But even at the best times our puppeteers are so good at what they do it’s easy to be caught up in the excitement and theatricality of the show.

What’s the best dinosaur fact you know?

Recently people have started to think that dinosaurs had feathers and that dinosaurs actually didn’t become extinct but instead evolved into birds. In reality, only a particular type of dinosaur evolved into birds and not all dinosaurs. There was a huge extinction event that caused most life to disappear forever, but what we have today is what survived and evolved to take its place in the world.

Have you ever fed a naughty child to a dinosaur?!

Oh yes, we do it in every show. It’s one of the funniest and spectacular moments!

8 pm, Tuesdays in April – Opera 101The Center launched its spring class lineup with Opera 101 featuring the artists from Intimate Opera. The course led up to the Kathleen Battle recital. Seven vocal students made their Palladium debut with a pre-concert performance in the Founders Room. 6:47 pm, April 11 – Purdue Glee Club Q&AArranged private Q&A for the Boys & Girls Club members. Six glee club performers met with the 55 students, sharing their experience being a performer. Over half of the Boys & Girls Club members said they had never been to a live concert. 5 pm, April 20 – Chick Corea & Gary Burton SoundcheckGary Burton and Chick Corea took time out of their soundcheck for a Q&A with 83 music students. One group of students traveled from Owen County to attend the concert and Q&A. Thank you to Firestone Building & Industrial Products for sponsoring the jazz education activities. 3 pm, April 21 – Lemonade Day pre-sessionThe Teen Artrepreneur Project was conceived to engage students in selling their musical talents. The Hamilton County Leadership Academy led the implementation, with the Palladium serving as the backdrop for the performances and workshops for 8 students to participate in the pilot year. The musicians performed for a Lemonade Day open house on May 18.

SECRET TO HAPPINESS? 3 generations of Hoosiers playing the ukulele.

Music has always been a part of Charlotte Swisher’s life.

Swisher, 91, spends summers singing with her family around a bonfire at a Lake Tippecanoe cottage. She once sang alto in the United Methodist Church choir. And she passed her love of music to her children, making sure her three adult daughters learned piano in their youth.

Lately, she and her family have fallen sway to the happy sounds of an unusual instrument: the ukulele.

A year ago for Swisher’s 90th birthday, her family arranged to serenade her with a ukulele flash mob. “Our family likes to plan musical surprises for special birthdays,” Dreiman said.

Family members performed several songs accompanied by seven ukuleles and one kazoo, including the reggae-inspired “Don’t worry, be happy,” and “You Belong to me,” Steve Martin’s serenade to Bernadette Peters in the 1979 movie “The Jerk.” Afterward, the children and grandchildren presented Swisher with her own ukulele.

So when her granddaughter, Hannah Feldmeyer, 30, Carmel, invited Swisher, 91, and four female family members to take part in a ukulele class at Carmel’s Center for Performing Arts, it was music to her ears.

Swisher and her daughter, Linda Dreiman, live in Marion and drive on Wednesday evenings to Carmel for ukulele lessons. There they meet Feldmeyer; Feldmeyer’s mother (and Swisher’s daughter) Jane Anderson, Lafayette; and Dreiman’s daughter, Kristen Beavers, Indianapolis. (Swisher’s third daughter, Mary Beth Weckerlin,plays introduced the family to the ukulele but was unable to join them for the classes.)

“Anybody who is playing ukulele is smiling and having a good time,” said instructor Geoff Davis, Noblesville. “These women are happy people. They are graceful, smiling, and are a joy to have in class.”

Reading music is only part of the process. There’s also the coordination of strumming chords, counting and of course singing.

“The ukulele is new to me and to many of us, but it’s such an approachable instrument,” said Feldmeyer, one of the family’s third generation of musicians.

On June 4, the three generations of ukulele players join other classmates in the Robert Adam Room at the Center as a warmup to the Jake Shimabukuro performance. The native Hawaiian’s ukulele pop music includes inventive interpretations of hits like “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”
