Since the Capitol Theatre’s Grand Re-opening, things just keep getting better and better! In July, Frenchy’s Rooftop Terrace was fully furnished with a custom drink rail as well as beautiful dark brown rattan outdoor couches, chairs and tables. It boasts an exceptional view of the Clearwater Harbor. According to Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO, “It’s a retreat. It’s a very special place, a quaint and attractive space – open to the public but private in feeling. We’re going to make it a top attraction.”

Just in time for the beginning of the 2014-15 season, the final touches were added to the Ray and Geri Trautlein VIP Lounge. Decker Ross Interiors installed custom benches built by Ruth Eckerd Hall’s house carpenter with comfortable cushions, which wrap the perimeter of the room, along with upholstered cherry wood chairs with “antique” side tables, velvet valances with tasseled fringe on the windows and neutral screen shades. “We were excited to be consulted on design, colors, lighting finishes and artistic accents throughout this historic Clearwater landmark,” remarked Suzan Ross, ASID and owner of Decker Ross Interiors.

“It has been an honor to work with Zev and all of the professionals associated with Ruth Eckerd Hall,” continued Suzan.

Zev promises, “We have more surprises coming soon in further beautification of other areas at the award-winning Capitol.”

Recently, the Capitol Theatre was honored with the prestigious statewide Roy F. Kenzie Award in the Outstanding Rehabilitation, Renovation and Reuse Project category by the Florida Redevelopment Association (FRA), which is dedicated to assisting Florida professionals and volunteers in revitalizing their communities. The award honors the best programs and projects in Florida redevelopment and acknowledges the excellent work an organization is doing. George Cretekos, Mayor, City of Clearwater shared, “The renovation of the Capitol Theatre was meant to assist in the revitalization of the Cleveland Street District of Downtown Clearwater. Since its reopening, the theater has become a destination that not only enhances the arts but also promotes the area for the benefit of the entire Clearwater community.”

Additionally, the Capitol Theatre won the 25th Annual Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts (TBBCA) Nonprofit Impact Awards, which honors charities that have elevated Tampa Bay’s cultural community through innovative arts programs, outstanding business practices and/or neighborhood revitalization. “Clearwater turned a corner with the Capitol Theatre being the new crown jewel of downtown,” said Zev. “We’re attracting national stars, with nearly every show selling out in advance. We proved with astonishing speed that residents and tourists will flock into Downtown Clearwater if you give them what they want!”

Sections of the World War I Wall of Honor listing discovered during the renovations of the Capitol Theatre with the names of servicemen and servicewomen has been successfully moved to the Clearwater Library. These sections featuring part of our history can be seen at that location as well as at the Capitol Theatre. Also, in its partial first year, the Capitol Theatre was already listed as 21st in the world for all theaters with 1,000 seats or less for ticket sales by Pollstar, an entertainment industry publication, for the timeframe of January – September 2014. The Capitol Theatre will be moved to the Clubs and Small Venue category going forward and we anticipate it making the top 10 by next year, cementing its success and the success of Downtown Clearwater.

Since 2011, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Expanding the Experience Capital Campaign has raised funds for the refurbishment of the Capitol Theatre and the renovation of Ruth Eckerd Hall. Now that the refurbishment of the Capitol Theatre has been successfully completed (see previous page), it’s time to concentrate on the next phase of renovations to Ruth Eckerd Hall. Toward this goal, Elden Weiss has contributed over $775,000. We are pleased to recognize Elden for his generosity. Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Grand Concourse will be named in his and his late wife’s honor – the Elden G. and Ruth K. Weiss Grand Concourse.

“Elden’s decision to give back to the community by supporting the performing arts is a true inspiration for us all,” stated Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO.

Elden and Ruth, who celebrated a full 62 years of marriage before she passed away in 2005, were members and supporters of Ruth Eckerd Hall since its Grand Opening in 1983. One of the many passions they shared was their love of attending Broadway shows.

When asked what inspired his gift to Ruth Eckerd Hall, he replied, “We have enjoyed going to the Hall so much. We love coming to the Broadway

shows, we are treated so well, and I love that the VIP Team always tries getting me my favorite seats. We have been very fortunate and I want to give back so others can have the same kind of enjoyment Ruth and I have had. It was a gift of the heart and I was happy to do it.”

Elden hopes his gift will help encourage others who hold Ruth Eckerd Hall near and dear to make a meaningful contribution to the Expanding the Experience Capital Campaign so that generations to come can continue to experience the joy that Ruth Eckerd Hall brings to the community.

For the second year, the GRAMMY Museum’s® acclaimed Music Revolution Project, an educational initiative that offered 30 talented youths from several Tampa Bay Area high schools the chance to totally immerse themselves in musical workshops, allowing them to edit, write and record their work, which resulted in the creation of new musical numbers. The entire program took place at the Maria P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. The mentoring sessions and the material they wrote and recorded were guided by GRAMMY Museum® instructors and internationally known artists such as John Blackwell, Prince’s drummer. The students also had the rare opportunity to observe a sound check with Graham Nash of the GRAMMY® Award-winning group, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees. The

four-week program culminated with the world premiere of the students’ new works live at the Capitol Theatre to a sold-out crowd requiring a second show be added!

“We were thrilled to produce our second year of the GRAMMY Museum’s® Music Revolution Project with Ruth Eckerd Hall, our official affiliate,” said GRAMMY Museum® Executive Director Bob Santelli. “Through the passion and commitment of our first-class partners, paired with a dynamic music and arts community in the Tampa Bay region, it is our hope that we can help develop a new generation of innovative music talent.”

“I am ecstatic that Ruth Eckerd Hall was a part of this incredible opportunity for these students again this year,” commented Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO. “We welcomed them and our partners at the GRAMMY Museum® with open arms!”

The GRAMMY Museum’s® Music Revolution Project was made possible with funding from Lisa Yob, founder of the Yob Foundation, which emphasizes broadening students’ musical and creative skills while helping establish relationships. The program is also designed to increase self-esteem, help students develop entrepreneurial skills and grow their ability to secure employment at a post high school age. A perfect example of meeting those goals and seeing Ruth Eckerd Hall’s mission in action are The Ries Brothers.

Alumni from last year’s program, Charlie and Kevin Ries were selected to participate in the exclusive Los Angeles GRAMMY Museum’s® Music Revolution Project. Since that time, they have gone on to headline and open at many events and for several artists across the area as well as being the youngest lead-in act to the headliner in the 34 year history of the Clearwater Jazz Holiday when they opened for the legendary band Chicago. They also opened for Chicago in Orlando and Atlanta. Then some exciting news followed – The Ries Brothers were invited to open for Chicago on the southeast leg of their current U.S. tour! Charlie and Kevin shared in an e-mail to Zev, “There is no doubt that our participation in the GRAMMY Museum’s® Music Revolution Project as well as the many experiences that Ruth Eckerd Hall has already given us has played a huge role in getting us to this point and for that we wanted to say a BIG thank you!” Congratulations, Charlie and Kevin!

Meet Sandrinne Edstrom from Tampa, Florida. She recently left the Sunshine State to attend the Musical Theater program in Ithaca, NY. The singer and saxophone player moved with her family from Sweden when she was five. Music helped her learn to speak English. “I just know that theater and music are what I’m supposed to do. It feels so natural – and it leaves a mark on the world.”

The GRAMMY Museum’s® Music Revolution Project (MRP) at Ruth Eckerd Hall helped her appreciate musical accompaniment and particularly, the bass line. “The whole song can come from the bass. It’s building music from the ground up.” During the program, Sandrinne also realized her potential as a musician and songwriter – it expanded her scope, range of musical styles and ability to compose.

Because of MRP, Sandrinne gained a new appreciation for different genres of music, specifically naming her new love of Funk and Psychedelic Country. She enjoyed the master class with a DJ and now wants to try her hand at that as a career. She also was surprised

by the lessons she learned about contracts and agents.

“I found confidence within me that I didn’t know was there. I will be a better performer and writer because of MRP,” Edstrom said. “Every day I thought MRP was a miracle. I could never have participated if it wasn’t FREE. It’s a dream come true. Thank you for making it happen. I’ve not only made new best friends but I had a life-altering experience.”

MRP helped her realize her dream to be a performer and songwriter. It even seems more attainable! “I want people to get inspiration from my music! To not be afraid to get out of their comfort zone and apply themselves to writing in different styles. To fall in love with music as deeply as I have!” Music has touched her in ways she never imagined and she hopes her music will pass that gift on to others.

The members of this year’s GRAMMY Museum’s® Music Revolution Project selected Sandrinne as the lone participant to travel to Los Angeles (at no cost) to attend the 2014 GRAMMY® Awards as the guest of the GRAMMY Museum’s® Executive Director, Bob Santelli. Good luck, Sandrinne!

Thank you to Lisa Yob, founder of the Yob Family Foundation, our donors and our members for helping students, like Sandrinne, make their dreams come true!

The 15th Friends of Music event was an exciting end of summer bash at the Capitol Theatre that featured two-time GRAMMY® Award-winner, Colbie Caillat along with very special guest, Jonathan Jackson (Avery from ABC’s multi-award nominated drama, Nashville) + Enation. In honor of Colbie’s first hit single and one of the best-selling tracks of all time, Bubbly, members used their ”passports” to attend the pre-party, which included a bubbly biergarten complete with costumed bar maids, German music and an array of German dishes. At this unique music experience, the next two GREAT Friends of Music events were announced! Save the dates for the number-one selling duo in music history and inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – Daryl Hall and John Oates on Friday, December 5, 2014 and a sibling trio that is one of country’s hottest acts – The Band Perry on Friday, March 13, 2015.Thank you to each of the Friends of Music members for your support in bringing the performing arts into the lives of children who would not otherwise experience them! Children like Annika, who received tuition assistance and according to her parents, “had a special learning opportunity that boosted her social and emotional development as well as provided memories that will last a lifetime as she acted in her first performance at Ruth Eckerd Hall.”

BrEakfasT Thanks CirClE of sTars MEMBErsAs a way to show our appreciation to our Circle of Stars members for their generous ongoing support, we held an event that we called Breakfast with Bobby. The event featured an interactive conversation with Bobby Rossi, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Chief Programming Officer, who talked about his early experiences in the industry as well as some of the more memorable events during his nearly twenty years (he will celebrate his 20th anniversary in January 2015) at the Hall. Bobby shared his insight into what it takes to get stars onto the stage – some good, some bad but all humorous in retrospect. Look for other such event in the future as we want our Circle of Stars members to get to know the people who work behind-the-scenes to make the magic happen!

A drummer for nearly 15 years and a Ruth Eckerd Hall member since 1999, the performing arts have always been an important part of Rick Lopez’s life. He grew up in Tampa and started playing the drums at 13. By the time he was 17, Rick had joined a band called the Pastels and they won the Battle of Bands, which got them a prime gig – being one of the four local opening bands for the Rolling Stones.

Vology and the Tampa Bay Rays teamed up to support the performing arts and arts education at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Vology donated $250 for each Rays home game walk during the regular season. Their donation totaled $39,000! From left to right are Kathryn Shevlin and Barry Shevlin, Vology CEO presenting their generous donation to Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO, Suzanne Ruley, Ruth Eckerd Hall Interim Chief Development Officer and Bobby Rossi, Ruth Eckerd Hall Chief Programming Officer. Vology is a reseller of new and certified pre-owned network equipment headquartered in Oldsmar, Florida serving 10,000+ customers in 65 countries. We thank them for the recognition and for supporting our mission to provide the community with superior performing arts opportunities.

Nearly 50 years ago, on a warm May night in Clearwater, the Stones rolled into town. The group had yet to hit its prime. [(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, wasn’t out yet. Keith Richards wrote it while they were in Clearwater. Today the song consistently tops charts as the first or second best song of all time.] But they were already huge. During the spring of 1965 in England, fans were selling the band’s used cigarette butts and trying to buy water the group had washed in. Four nights before they came to Clearwater, the

Stones appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the second time. The City and a local radio station dubbed the Clearwater show the “Star Spectacular.” Local bands were warming up the 3,000 person crowd when word spread that the Stones had arrived. Scores of fans rushed to the railings, some of them climbing on top of the dugouts and trying to storm onto the stage. The Stones made it through four numbers, before being hustled off in a white station wagon. According to a news report, “The boys were likable, a polite group.”

Rick would agree with that. Days before they were scheduled to open for the Stones, the Pastels had their instruments stolen. The Rolling Stones heard about their situation and bought them new ones. According to Rick, “There was satisfaction for us – I’ll never forget opening for the Rolling Stones and I’ll always be grateful that they helped us out when we were in a tough spot.” Rick added, “As a past member of a local band, it’s meaningful and reassuring to me when a Ruth Eckerd Hall show opens with an emerging group – I like knowing that Ruth Eckerd Hall is opening doors to future stars.”

In its premiere at film festivals across the country, Project: Shattered Silence (P: SS) has received many accolades including being named Best Feature Documentary at the 6th Annual Louisville International Festival of Film as well as receiving the Dr. Phillips Focus on Art award at the

Orlando Film Festival and Honorable Mentions from the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival and from the Santa Monica Film Festival.

In addition to film festival awards, P: SS has been nominated for a Suncoast Emmy® in the Documentary Category as well as a nomination in the Editing Category for Mark Harris. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Suncoast Emmy® Awards are just one of a dozen Emmy® Award presentations around the nation. The Suncoast Chapters covers from Louisiana to Puerto Rico.

WEDU saw the great potential of this project and teamed up with Ruth Eckerd Hall to film the process of creating P: SS for a documentary that will premiere on 127 PBS stations across the country. An episode of WEDU Arts Plus, featuring a special eight-minute segment from the documentary, won a Suncoast Emmy® Award last year.

Since being formed six years ago, Project: Shattered Silence has given over 120 teenagers in our community a way to share their personal struggles in their own voice in a unique way using a theatrical platform. “Project: Shattered Silence started as simply an idea,” says Jared O’Roark, Artistic Director/Creator, “I didn’t know it was going to explode the way it has, and it is a very humbling experience to be accepted into any film festivals. It helped me realize that this is not just a theatrical experience but a human connection.”

“The amazing national recognition of our very own Project: Shattered Silence is where we need to be in the ‘new normal’ battle for attention to timely and mature education for our youth countrywide,” said Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO. “We are also proud of our relationship with PBS allies in the Tampa Bay area. Be ready for more youth-oriented one hour TV specials coming very soon.”

Thanks to our Gala donors, students like Emma* can be granted tuition assistance. According to her mother, “Emma was always shy – even finding it difficult to say hello to a stranger let alone speak up in school. Well, those days are behind her and the teachers and leaders at the Hoffman School should be the ones taking a bow! As a 14-year-old teenager starting eighth grade, which can be a huge turning point in a young girl’s life, she truly blossomed under your professional care.” Emma credits her drama training in helping her become a member of the student council and performing a solo in a school play. Your generosity helped her step forward and shine!*Name and photo changed to protect student’s privacy.

Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Ninth Annual Gala, What A Feeling, transformed our Main Stage into a nightclub in steel town as we played homage to Flashdance – The Musical (scheduled to perform at Ruth Eckerd Hall on March 28, 2015), which tells the story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and bar dancer by night with dreams of one day becoming a professional performer. By raising a record-breaking gross amount of $282,000, everyone’s support of this event helps our students, many of them like Alex, find their passion and make it happen!

The night included a cocktail reception, silent auction items, a seated dinner, a live auction and dancing to the sounds of the Southtown Fever Band as well as performances by the Hall’s Rhythm & Sole Tap Ensemble and the Center Stage Mixed Ensemble. The event featured emcee and auctioneer Jason Alpert and dinner prepared by Café Ponte.

CorporaTE Thank you DinnEr spoTlighTs sTuDEnT TalEnTSteve Sika, Chairman of the Corporate Development Committee welcomed over 80 representatives to the annual thank you dinner to recognize our “corporate stars!” The evening focused on examples of how the generosity of our corporate donors helps to nourish our students. Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Jazz Band, one of the 12 finest youth jazz bands in the country, and Maya Jacobson, Vocal Scholarship recipient and “Fan Favorite” in the inaugural Dare to Dream Awards held in 2013, wowed the attendees with their skilled performances. A highlight of the evening was a presentation by Southeastern Guide Dogs, which shared a story about Song, a dog that was trained by a Ruth Eckerd Hall staff member as a way to give back to our community. The evening was catered by Carrabba’s Italian Grill and featured a raffle drawing with gifts donated by many of our Preferred Partners – THANK YOU for all you do for the performing arts and arts education!

According to Bo Cooksey, Vice President with Centennial Bank and Preferred Corporate Partner, “Ruth Eckerd Hall has been a big part of my life and holds a special place in the hearts of both myself and my spouse. Whether it is a show, educational event or a concert, the Hall does so much to enhance the lives of the people in the Tampa Bay Region and beyond.”

SchoolTime is a significant arts education program at Ruth Eckerd Hall and it would not be possible without the support of key partners. This program serves school children from Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties and, in many cases, provides them with their first, and in some cases their only exposure, to live theater. Once again, Bank of America has agreed to generously be the presenting sponsor of this impactful program that affects nearly 7,000 children annually. Bill Goede, Bank of America’s Tampa Bay President said, “Ruth Eckerd Hall’s SchoolTime program connects young people to the arts and opens them to a world of possibility. At Bank of America we know we are better when we’re connected. Thanks Ruth Eckerd Hall for continuing to provide this opportunity to local school children.” Thank you, Bank of America, for providing a gift to our youth’s future!

TaMpa Bay TiMEs supporT sparks TalEnT anD BrighTEns youThs fuTurEIn a “tale as old as time,” the Tampa Bay Times Fund generously donated $5,000 to the summer tuition assistance program of the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. The Times Fund has supported the Hall and its educational programs since before they opened. Because of its continued support, 3,600 students ages three

to 17 had nearly 31,000 hours of classroom experiences. One of the many summer programs offered this year was the fully

costumed “concert” stage version of Disney’s™ Beauty and the Beast. At the check presentation in the front row, from left

to right are Justin Hall, Costumer in Residence; Peggy Koski, Beauty and the Beast Costumes; Jarrett Koski, Beauty and

the Beast Director; Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO; Sharon Reid-Kane, Ruth Eckerd Hall Senior Director

of Education; Jounice Nealy-Brown, Tampa Bay Times Fund; Michael Mekus as the Beast and Courteney McClutchy as Belle.

Back row: Suzanne Ruley, Interim Chief Development Officer. The TBT gift helped to start a spark with these talented youths. Now it’s up to each of them to take that spark and turn it into

fire! We think the future sure looks bright.

For over 30 years, Publix Super Markets Charities has supported the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Once again this year, they donated $15,000 to continue to help fund year-round arts education programs where students learn to express themselves, gain self- confidence and practice self-discipline. Over the summer, Publix representatives visited to present their gift. On that day, students from the X-Factor class, where they explore and expand their artistic talents by developing dance routines, learning songs and rehearsing scripts, joined them. The students and several staff members spent time expressing their gratitude to the Publix representatives, who are from left to right in the center holding the check: Allyn Welch, District Manager; Brian West, Media and Communications Relations Manager and Steve Hedgecock, Store Manager. Thank you, Publix, for your unwavering support – annually gifts like yours help change the lives of 51,883 students with 117,414 hours of arts experiences!
