The Power of Demonstrated Interest

Moderator: Chuck Bachman, Senior Associate Director of Admisson, Lafayette College

Presenter(s): Chuck Bachman, Senior Associate Director of Admissons, Lafayette College Marty Elkins, Director of College Counseling, Shady Side Academy

Increasingly, the X factor in college admission is “demonstrated interest” (DI). Colleges of all sizes & selectivity fine-tune enrollment formulas to gauge not only ability to succeed but propensity to enroll. With more colleges filling close to half their incoming class via early admission, & turning down students who took a test rather than attend a college visit, what’s a regular admission c&idate to do to convey genuine interest in a college? Where is the line between meaningful use of DI & practices that foster inauthentic behavior? Join a panel of college counselors & admission officers to discuss the basis for using DI on the college side, the impact on students, & the ethics of advising students about its use. Session participants will brainstorm strategies for refocusing attention on meaningful indicators of interest & intent. Participants will propose ways to review, refine, or moderate institutions’ reliance on DI.

Conflict of interest also exists when individuals experience a clash between cultural beliefs & cultural values. Cultural clashes are not limited to warring factions or strangers but sometimes they are found close to home as between parents & children. For example, international students face struggles that their peers do not—a struggle to maintain their heritage while living in a contrary culture. Also, it is common to observe international college students anguished over cultural clashes arising between themselves & their parents because of generational or knowledge gaps.

From the Trenches to the Field: High School Counselors' Perceived Self-Efficacy regarding Role(s) & Responsibilities Pertaining to Students' Mental Health

Needs

Moderator/ Presenter: Sarah Babins, School Counselor, Centennial School District

Paramount to supporting students’ academic achievements is for school counselors to uncover, address, & support the growing number of mental health issues that so often impede a child’s ability to learn. It is estimated that one in four children have a diagnosable mental disorder (New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, 2003) & close to 75% of children in need of mental health services will not receive them (Kataoka, Zhang, & Wells, 2002). A 2002-2003 mental health administrative report revealed that 69% of school districts across the USA reported an increase in mental health needs & services, but only a 15% funding allotment for mental health needs (Foster & Jones, 2006). Students’ unmet mental health needs can be a significant barrier to student success. Conditions contributing to student mental health problems-poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, physical & sexual abuse, & domestic & community violence- are fast becoming a “normal” part of the family & neighborhood culture within which many students grow & develop (Estes, Lockhart & Keys, 1998). As the mental health needs of school-age children increase, community collaborative services, funding, & staffing, have put a tremendous amount of pressure on schools to meet the mental health needs of students (Perfect & Morris, 2011). Professional school counselors are faced with providing prevention & short-term intervention services, identifying students with mental health needs, coordinating mental health teams, making appropriate referrals to community-based mental health professionals, & following up with treatment plans to ensure appropriate services are provided (Teich, Robinson, & Weist, 2007). As schools continue to move forward in meeting the needs of these students, important questions must be asked about whether the services offered at present by school guidance counselors are adequate for the task at h& (Estes, Lockhart, & Keys, 1998).
