Q3 2012
“At the base of this is the simple fact that the technical specification of the SpectraExact is better than the competition.“it was developed as a capable platform to provide a robust and reliable analysis to a required accuracy.
it was designed to be highly configurable, enabling it to be suitable for a wide range of process applications; the ability to vary the pathlength means the capability is there to offer a wide range of measurements.
“We regularly revisit the unit – as with the recent fourth upgrade to Version d – but remain constantly impressed with the original
engineering. Accordingly we are able to constantly support the measurement with improvements that extend the versatility of the unit.
This covers engineering innovations – such as chemraz ‘o’ rings to ensure improved leak tightness for use in high concentration, highly toxic gas measurements – as well
as integrating advances in control and communications that keep developing, such as Ethernet connectivity and digital communications.
“it’s also proved to be very customer friendly. Customers like the ease-of-maintenance and it’s highly reliable in processes that cause less robust analysers significant operational problems.”
“ THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT SPECTRAExACT COnTInUES TO BECOME MORE & MORE SUCCESSFUl.”

roger hightonProcess Photometry Product Manager, Servomex.
Servomex IR photometric technology uses infrared light to provide measurements, operating on the principle that molecules of many gases absorb energy in the infrared region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. Specific wavelengths of infrared energy are known to cause the bonds within the gas molecules to vibrate. As different gas molecules are exercised by different wavelengths they absorb energy from infrared light at their specific wavelengths when it passes through the gas sample, therefore making it possible to detect and measure the presence of certain gases.
Each gas has a unique absorption spectrum so by passing infrared light through a sample containing the target gas and by measuring the reduction in the received energy, it is possible to gain an indication of the gas concentration in the sample.
Applying this principle to a gas analyser for effective use in an industrial context has seen a number of different techniques – and problems – evolve.
The single beam single wavelength model requires frequent calibration to ensure accuracy; while the dual-beam configuration can present vibration issues under extreme process conditions. The problems are overcome in the SpectraExact by employing single beam dual wavelength or single beam multiple wavelength arrangements, so there is a single optical path and a robust pyroelectric detector rather than a microflow detector enabling accurate and reliable readings for process control, plant safety and legal compliance applications.
the spectraexact’s single or dual component gas analysis is designed to measure corrosive, toxic and flammable sample streams.
With a proven track record in extremely accurate and reliable analysis of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, ethylene, acetylene, sulphur dioxide, chlorine and helium, the SpectraExact is suitable for use in a wide range of production processes including:
• PurifiedTerephthalic Acid (PTA)
• TolueneDi-Isocyanate(TDI)
• EthyleneDichloride(EDC)/ vinyl Chloride Monomer (vCM) production
• FCCU(FluiditedCatalyticCracking Units)
A high integrity cell option further enhances the measurement flexibility of the SpectraExact, enabling a host of important industry uses.
These include the careful control of water content in ethylene dichloride (EDC), such as in vinyl chloride plants to protect against catastrophic corrosion of reactor tubes, prevent plugging of reactor tubes and increase reactor throughput by avoiding costly shutdowns.

modern semiconductor fabrication plants employ sophisticated gas distribution systems (GdS) to deliver a variety of ultra-high purity (UHP) gases from bulk purifiers to the process tools. These GdS are controlled and monitored by Continuous Quality Control (CQC) systems that allow fabs to maintain extremely low levels of contaminants in their process gases. As device line sizes decrease at an unprecedented rate and the impurity control points of UHP gases are reduced to their limit, the task of controlling contaminants is becoming more demanding.
The principal contaminants monitored by CQC systems are oxygen and moisture, of which moisture is the most difficult to control due to its adsorption and transport characteristics, particularly at sub-ppb levels. These characteristics not only gate the initial dry down of a GdS but also make leak detection and process trouble shooting of process excursions difficult.
Within materials production, especially metal working, the control of furnace gas atmosphere has to be controlled in order to improve the quality of the treated metal parts. measurement of oxygen plays an important part in helping to ensure the quality of the treated metal parts: the combustion mixture associated with a rich exothermic gas atmosphere must often be controlled to reduce the oxygen levels. This avoids product oxidation, which can be wasteful and costly for manufacturers. Applications include bright annealing, low and medium carbon steels, brazing with bright finish or clean hardening of low and medium carbon steels.
in addition to their value as a quality control tool, oxygen analysers are being used to help protect against accidental explosions and fires in furnaces that utilize special processing atmospheres such as hydrogen and dissociated ammonia. The NFPA recommends that under certain conditions, furnace atmospheres are monitored for oxygen prior to start up to help ensure that the atmosphere is below its explosive limit.
Sealed enclosures equipped with at least one pair of gloves that are attached to the front of the enclosure, gloveboxes isolate a particular process from the environment usually for reasons of safety. many of the processes conducted within glove boxes must be performed under oxygen-free atmospheres such as nitrogen, helium or argon to help ensure that maximum isolation from the outside environment has been achieved.
most oxygen sensors used to monitor glove box atmospheres have a relatively short life span of several months as they exhibit inherent operational problems including a relatively short operational life, a tendency to read low due to loss in sensitivity which then requires frequent recalibration, and the potential susceptibility to oxygen shock if exposed to large concentrations of oxygen. The combination of false low readings, frequent recalibrations and slow speed of response has prompted glove box users to look for a better solution.

This separation process determines the presence and relative concentration of gases and impurities in a sample. Correctly applied, GC is exceptionally accurate and measures down to part-per-billion concentrations in gaseous samples, making it particularly suitable for use in high-purity processes.
GC is an atypical gas analysis technique insofar that the measurement is made following the individual separation of the gas sample, rather than within the sample. The components of the mixture are separated by circulating a gas sample using an inert carrier gas, known as the mobile phase, into a flow-through circular
tube known as a column. The different constituents of the gas mixture are separated due to their interaction with the column material, known as the stationary phase, which causes the different molecules in the sample to elute at different times. These specific retention times are detected by an electronic sensor at the column exit as the individual molecular properties of each gas cause it to travel through and exit at a different time.
The comparison of retention times allows users to qualitatively identify gas types by the order in which they elute from the column – most simply, this is enabled by plotting the detector signal strength against time elapsed on a graph. In stable conditions, a particular gas will elute with the same retention time, allowing specific gas types to be deduced from the area of the peak. In addition, the relative volume of each gas concentration can also be
measured by the detector as each gas elutes from the column.
GC process conditions vary according to application and require individual optimisation. Setting these conditions, known as method, includes considerations such as setting column and detector temperatures and specifying carrier gas flow rates, sample loop size and the column’s diameter, type and length. Some analysers offer the ability to change the route of sample and carrier flow, facilitated by valves operated by user-variable timings.
A range of different sensors types are used in GC analysis, chosen on the basis of gas type and applications: Servomex’s SERvOPRO Chroma can be factory-fitted with a combination of sensor technologies for increased flexibility of measurement, with the most commonly used being
the flame ionisation detector (FID) and thermal conductivity detector (TCD).
Given the sensitivity of GC, it is most useful in process control to optimise a gas, as well as to qualify the quality of a supplied gas. The most frequent application for GC is the measurement of impurities in bulk gases: for instance the Servomex SERvOPRO Chroma measures a range of gases including h2, O2, N2, Ch4, CO, CO2 and NMhC in h2, O2, N2, Ar and he. Other key applications include measurement of crude argon and medical nitrogen. When correctly optimised for a particular application, the exceptional accuracy, sensitivity and flexibility of GC make it suitable not only for ASU processes but also vital in industries and applications as diverse as semiconductor manufacture, steel making and hydrogen production.

Reliability The sensors are housed in a unique insulated sensor head with close couple extractive probe that ensures outstanding performance. The heated sample block prevents condensation and the zirconia cell’s capacity for reliable readings from a wet sample massively decreases the capacity for measurement errors.
Diagnostics The FluegasExact’s Flowcube flow sensor technology is an industry first in that it facilities true system diagnostics. This ensures valid measurements within specification and allows user-defined alarm levels to be set with confidence. Comprehensive software diagnostics, available at a push of a button, leads to quick and simple maintenancce.
PreventiveMaintenanceThe flow sensor technology has been placed before the measurement transducers so positive flow conditions can be validated. The zirconia cell offers extremely accurate and stable readings in a low-flow extractive design that delivers an exceptionally long service life. The sample block internal temperature interlock provides peace of mind that sample flow into the sensor head can only occur when adequate temperature has been achieved to prevent any condensation in the analytical sensors.
Measurement AssuranceThe unique Servomex zirconia oxygen sensor is a world-leading technology and is able to measure fluegas oxygen without a sample conditioning system. The thick film catalytic sensor measuring technology for combustibles analysis facilitates continuous process optimisation - resulting in significant fuel savings and emissions reduction.
Safety The flame trap design is approved and tested to exacting standards and the FluegasExact is approved for use in hazardous areas without compromising its performance.
