INCORPORATING THE LATEST ADVANCES IN GAS SENSING TECHNOLOGY AND SIGNAL PROCESSING METHODOLOGY, THE NEW SERVOPRO NANOCHROME FROM SERVOMEX TRANSFORMS ULTRA-TRACE PURITY MEASUREMENTS FOR UHP GASES.

SERVOPRO NANOCHROMEUHP GAS ANALYZERULTRA-TRACE GAS ANALYZER REVOLUTIONISES UHP GAS ANALYSIS FOR THE SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY

Designed specifically for the measurement of contaminant gases and hydrocarbons that can be present at ultra-trace levels in semiconductor manufacture, the NanoChrome delivers a superb and stable sub-ppb measurement for H2, CH4, CO, CO2 and NMHC in a range of common background gases including He, H2, N2, Ar and O2.The result is an analyzer that offers not only numerous measurement and performance advantages over traditional Flame Ignition Detector (FID) and Reduction Gas Detection (RGD) technologies, but delivers substantive cost and safety benefits not previously available to customers that rely on the highest possible gas purities to maintain product quality.

The NanoChrome delivers exceptional low detection limits through an innovative high-sensitivity Plasma Emission Detector (PED) specially developed by Servomex. Already field proven through ultra-trace measurements of N2 and Ar, the extended measurement wavelength enables the enhanced PED to include measurements for H2, CH4, CO and CO2, as well as a direct hydrocarbon measurement with no need for a methaniser.

As the PED sensor requires only a carrier gas, external contamination from air and fuel is removed. While it is still very important to have a clean carrier gas, techniques exist to obtain a clean helium or argon carrier gas with a total impurity level below 1 ppb. In addition, avoiding the use of hydrogen and air reduces ownership cost as less gas is consumed and less purification systems are required.

The analytical sensitivity and reliability of the NanoChrome is enhanced by advanced signal recovery, utilising specially developed adaptive chromatographic filtering methods and ProPeak peak detection techniques for a more sensitive and selective measurement than previously available for UHP gases. By utilising a Direct Analysis Methodology, the NanoChrome removes the doubt associated with measurements made by FID and RGD measurements with the certainty of exceptional measurement accuracy.

Integrated alongside the Servomex DF-500 ultra-trace analyzer series and DF-700 moisture analyzer series, Servomex now offers the semiconductor industry a single, complete solution for reliable UHP gas analysis. Supported through a global support network of sales, service and support, Servomex is the only gas analysis manufacturer to deliver a single supplier solution for all UHP gas purity measurements.

SERVOMEX GAS DETECTIONOxyDetect

THE FIRST PRODUCT TO BE LAUNCHED UNDER THE NEW SERVOMEX GAS DETECTION BRAND, THE OXYDETECT IS A SAFE AREA MONITOR WHICH UTILISES ADVANCED NON-DEPLETING PARAMAGNETIC TECHNOLOGY TO ACCURATELY MONITOR OXYGEN LEVELS – WITHOUT THE SENSOR DETERIORATION THAT AFFECTS TRADITIONAL ELECTROCHEMICAL SENSORS USED IN COMPETITOR DETECTORS.

SERVOMEX OXYDETECTGAME-CHANGING GAS DETECTION FROM SERVOMEX

Designed for use in life critical applications, the OxyDetect utilises the Hummingbird Paracube® Micro paramagnetic sensor, whose industry-leading levels of linearity, accuracy and reliability have ensured its use as a trusted oxygen sensor for the OEM medical market. The OxyDetect therefore demonstrates several advantages over traditional technologies, ensuring users enjoy an unprecedented level of safety and performance as well as a lower cost of lifetime ownership.

The OxyDetect’s non-consumable design ensures longevity and eliminates the costs associated with the regular replacement of electrochemical, galvanic or fuel cells, as well as the recognised problems of cell degradation when in use or kept as a stock item. As the OxyDetect’s paramagnetic measurement stability also eliminates the requirement for frequent calibration, users avoid frequent labour and downtime costs, incurred either when a traditional cell is calibrated or replaced due to anticipated expiration or sudden failure.

The robust non-depleting technology delivers both substantial cost savings and minimal

maintenance requirements to make it the ideal choice for integration either into a new Fixed Point oxygen monitoring system, or as a replacement technology for existing point monitors using inferior depleting technology.

As well as significantly reducing the cost of ownership, saving time and money, the OxyDetect utilises advanced microprocessor-based diagnostics that are safe, reliable and easy to access via a simple front panel digital interface. Suitable for use in indoor environments ranging in temperature from 5°C to 45°C, the OxyDetect offers an isolated 4-20mA output with linear measurement for simple integration, an output range of 0-25% O2 and a fault alarm via mA jam to 0mA.

SERVOPRO AnalyzersSERVOPRO FID

UTILISING THE LATEST SENSOR AND SOFTWARE PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY, THE SERVOPRO FID’S ABILITY TO ACCURATELY MEASURE TOTAL HYDROCARBONS ENSURES PRODUCT QUALITY AND PROTECTS PLANT SAFETY ACROSS ALL INDUSTRIAL GAS APPLICATIONS.

SERVOPRO FID

Due to the global growth of heavy industries, the hydrocarbon content in ambient air has risen sharply in many regions in recent years, these increasing Total Hydrocarbon (THC) levels have brought new challenges for the safe and successful operation of ASU plants: THCs in the air extracted by an ASU must be scrubbed to an acceptable level to avoid contaminating product quality, while the presence of THC in an O2 LP column can be an explosive hazard if mixed with pure O2.Servomex has the complete solution to protect ASU against hydrocarbon contamination: The SERVOPRO FID, a Flame Ionization Detector analyzer designed to assure safe operation within Cryogenic Air Separation plants by assuring the THC level is maintained below flammable limits, as well as providing quality control for pure O2, N2, Ar, and Air

The SERVOPRO FID analyzers uses a high-performance, low-noise Flame Ionization Detector (FID), which burns hydrocarbons present

in a sample, producing charged molecules that cause electrical conduction between 2 electrodes. The FID measures the conduction of charged particles and produces an output which is directly proportional to the concentration of Total Hydrocarbons (THC) in the sample. Enhanced by a state-of-the-art logarithmic amplifier that decreases drift and thermal noise, Servomex’s FID technology offers accurate measurements and clean operation with a guaranteed 100ppb resolution.

As an essential safety instrument, the FID offers extensive remote communication options through full Ethernet and internet connectivity – making it ideal even for unmanned plants. Capable of remotely control via a network or an internet browser, operators are able to check all parameters or troubleshoot the unit offsite. In addition, the FID can also be configured to be monitored via a standard 4-20 mA output to transmit process values to a remote system.

Ease of use is facilitated by a simple and intuitive user interface, enabling users to view values including real time measurements and system status. The unit includes diagnostic options that allow engineers to obtain important operation information including calibration parameters, PID constants, Ethernet parameters and alarm historic data with date and time.

With many FID technologies, the supply of fuel gas is expensive and time consuming. With a smart Servomex design, as well as an on-board flow control device, SERVOPRO FID reduces fuel consumption to its minimum while supporting the flame. In laboratory testing, the SERVOPRO FID consumed no less than half the fuel cylinders of the nearest competitor product, delivering significant fuel cost savings.Dawei Zhang, Product Marketing Manager, Servomex

Servomex Plasma Emission Technology: A leap forward in the measurement of UHP gases

In the field of gas chromatography, many sensors are available that cover a broad range of measurements. ermal Conductivity (TCD) and Flame Ionisation Detector (FID) sensors have been available for decades and are the most commonly used measurement technologies. However, there is now a new technology available that surpasses their performance, especially when ultra-trace level measurement is required.

FID technology is currently the most widely used sensor for hydrocarbons analysis. This sensor is relatively simple to use, offering a very sensitive, selective and linear measurement, but there are operational disadvantages. A FID sensor uses a flame to burn hydrocarbons, which requires air and costly hydrocarbon-free hydrogen fuel gas to burn. In recent years, stringent health and safety requirements means concerns have also been raised over using flammable pure hydrogen.

Challenged to find a safer alternative to the FID, Servomex’s R&D team undertook extensive research on Servomex’s existing Plasma Emission Detector (PED) technology. Determined to improve the technology’s sensitivity and identify a configuration specific to hydrocarbons while avoiding the use of explosive gases, the research has led to the development of a PED sensor optimised for the trace level analysis of hydrocarbons.

The new Servomex PED sensor offers many advantages over FID technology. The new PED sensor is very sensitive and selective to any molecules containing carbons (organic or inorganic), being up to 10 to 100 times more sensitive than a FID measurement, depending on the carrier gas.

The best FID sensors offering a detection limited between 10 ppb and 20 ppb methane equivalent, a limitation is due to the FID sensor requiring carrier gas, fuel and air to operate – making the sensor more prone to noise from low level hydrocarbon contamination from those different potential sources of contamination. Any hydrocarbons contained in any of these gases are ionised by the sensor, causing drift and noise which limits reliable performance for ultra-trace level measurements.

Figure 1 – PED sensitivity to CH4, CO2 and NMHC

with NanoChrome

Fig. 1 shows a chromatogram obtained with a PED sensor at 5 ppb for CH4, CO2 and NMHC. This chromatogram shows clear sensitivity to hydrocarbons, as well as sensitivity to CO2 achieved without the use of a methaniser which converts CO and CO2 to CH4. While a methaniser is always required to measure CO and CO2 with a FID sensor, it is not required by the PED – improving measurement reliability, avoiding catalyst poisoning risks associated with methanisers and creating a further reduction in cost-of-ownership.

Fig. 2 shows a step response using a Servomex NanoChrome analyzer at ppb level, again showing the sensitivity achieved with this new sensor. The achievable limit of detection for CO, CO2, CH4 and NMHC is below 1 ppb.

Fig. 3 shows chromatogram obtained for speciated hydrocarbons analysis, showing the PED sensor’s clear sensitivity to the different hydrocarbons.

There are limitations to using PED technology, most notably the sensitivity of the measurement means it is suitable only for trace analysis applications (<1000 ppm). Due to the nature of the plasma, the sensor also exhibits occasional mild cross interferences due to the sample matrix, which requires more demanding chromatographic methods – as is also sometimes the case with FID technology.

Overall the new PED sensor developed by Servomex has many advantages over the FID technology. The sensor revolutionises the analysis of hydrocarbons, CO and CO2 by improving measurement sensitivity, successfully addressing the safety concerns associated with the use of hydrogen and reducing the cost of ownership.

The new PED sensor is at the heart of the new Servomex NanoChrome analyzer, designed to that measures ultra-trace level of impurities in electronic gases. Integrated alongside the Servomex DF-500 ultra-trace analyzer series and DF-700 moisture analyzer series, Servomex now offers the semiconductor industry a single, complete solution for reliable UHP gas analysis
