It is a voluntary, membership orga- nization open to merchants, organizations and individuals. Many older BIDs in the NYC area, such as the Times Square Alliance, are legendary as rescuing and stabilizing an urban loca- tion, which has a wonderful impact on the broader area. Why apply for a BID? Sanctioned by NYC Small Business Services, BIDs are good for property owners because they assist in the value of the rental spaces. They are good for stores and residents because the funds supporting the BID are from a set assessment the organization can depend on, in our BID’s case, provid- ing a $300,000 budget, rather than the voluntary contributions of Chamber mem- bers, which are $125 for member entities of any size, and $25 for non-voting indi- viduals. Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have sacrificedfor our freedom and pay them tribute with our support

On Veterans Day, we pay respect tothose who have fought for our countryand to the men and women who continueto do battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each Nov. 11, we recognize the braveryand sacrifice of our nation’s soldierswho’ve fought in deadly arenas on far-away battlefields so that our freedom, our families and our nation are safe.

The commemoration carries the pur-pose of President Woodrow Wilson’sofficial Armistice Day proclamation inNovember 1919 to “be filled with thesolemn pride in the heroism of those whodied in the country’s service and withgratitude for the victory, both because ofthe thing from which it has freed us andbecause of the opportunity it has givenAmerica to show her sympathy with peaceand justice in the councils of the nation.”

We can make our silent tribute at TheTomb of the Unknowns at ArlingtonNational Cemetery, where the remainsof brave soldiers from World War I,World War II and the Korean War nowlie in honored repose; at the Marine CorpsWar Memorial, which stands as a sym-bol of heroism and perseverance; beforethe nearly 60,000 names of the deadengraved on the Vietnam Veterans Me-morial. There are also seven Departmentof Veterans Affairs National Cemeteriesin New York State, including AlbanyRural Cemetery Soldiers’ Lot; Bath Na-tional Cemetery; Calverton National

A Message From Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan...

Cemetery; Cypress Hills National Cem-etery; Long Island National Cemetery;Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga NationalCemetery; and Woodlawn National Cem-etery.

However, responsibility asks us to gobeyond a mere salute to our soldiers anddemands that we address the increas-ingly complex circumstances of thosewho defend our families and our free-doms. Though we can never adequatelyrepay these brave men and women, theAssembly is committed to providing our

veterans with the help and support theydeserve when they are home.

New York State provides several ben-efits and services to our veterans andtheir families, like the state’s Homes forVeterans Program, which offers fixed-rate, low-interest mortgages to veteransand their spouses through the State ofNew York Mortgage Agency(SONYMA). New York State also offersthe Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptionto provide a partial exemption on realproperty taxes to wartime veterans, vet-

erans who received expeditionary med-als or the spouses of qualified veterans.

To help the thousands of New York-ers who have disrupted their lives toserve, the state lends its support to mili-tary families by awarding up to $500 inannual annuity payments to Gold Starparents of deceased veterans who meetincome eligibility requirements; grant-ing scholarships for undergraduate andgraduate studies at schools in New YorkState; providing burial allowances of upto $6,000; and restricting foreclosure ac-tions. In addition, New York State recog-nizes the dedication and sacrifice ofWorld War II, Korean War and VietnamWar veterans who left school beforegraduation by awarding them with a highschool diploma.

Veterans Day marks our commitmentto shared principles and ideals that bindus to the cause of democracy and the highprice we pay to defend these ideals inlives lost, families shattered and dreamsdeferred. This day of remembrance pro-vides us the opportunity to recognize thework and selflessness of those who de-fend our country and I will continue toensure that our soldiers and veteransreceive the help they so rightly deserve.

For information about state programsfor veterans, visit http://veterans.ny.gov/. If you’re interested in receiving a bro-chure on veterans’ benefits, contact mydistrict office at 718-784-3194.

How did the BID happen?Sunnyside Shine BID Execu-tive Director Alyssa Bonillawas the guest speaker at aKiwanis Club of Sunnysidedinner meeting at SidetracksRestaurant Oct. 20, where sheanswered questions about theBID. Bonilla explained that aBID is approved by the Citywhen more than 50 per cent ofproperty owners in an applica-tion area who seek BID statusare in favor, in a SBS applica-tion process. John Vogt, aWhite Castle System execu-tive, Chairman of SunnysideShines and also on the Cham-ber board, said “We finalizedthe effort to form the BID whenI was President of the Cham-ber, so the BID came out of theChamber.”

Where do BID fundscome from? The propertiesowner must pay their assess-ments according to a formulabased on property value andfrontage. The retailers withinBID geography properties au-tomatically become part of theBID and pay an additional as-sessment in their rent. For in-stance, one medium sized re-tailer we spoke with onGreenpoint pays approxi-mately $35 per month, or $420per year.

Who guides the organi-zations? “The SunnysideChamber of Commerce Boardof Directors is elected by themembership from amongthemselves, and serve two yearterms,” said Lily Gavin ofDazies Restaurant, on theBoard in both organizations.Sunnyside Shines has yet todetermine term limits for itsofficers, whose appointmentswere part of the approval ap-plication. Both boards are un-

Those serving in bothorganization boards are An-thony Lodati, Lowery Liquors,Gerry Lederman, Triad Man-agement and Maureen Lynch,Lynch Funeral Home.

Why do we need both?“The Sunnyside area has manyblooming businesses, organi-zations, and initiatives in andoutside of the BID geography, which rely on the longstandingstrength and proven record ofthe Sunnyside Chamber, saidIra Greenberg, local attorneyand Chamber president. “Ouropen membership means thatmembers can elect any mem-ber to guide the organizationand its future, and volunteerscan add expertise.” SunnysideChamber of Commerce boardmembers, in addition to theabove, but not on the BIDboard are, Patrice Lee of AprilGlass, Rigoberto Cardoso ofPronto Car Service, DianeBallek of 108 CommunityCouncil, Becky Barker ofMetLife and financial advi-sor, Bruce Bendell of MajorAuto, Seth Bornstein ofLaGuardia College, Tim Chenof Quaint, Mohammed Daudof Best Western City View,Michael Kearney of KearneyHome Care, Grace King ofCitibank, Vincent Renda ofEdward Jones, Marlene R.Sabba of Sabba Printing Com-pany, Sherilyn Jo Sabba of theWoodside Herald, Roel vander kooi of the Lions Club,(and this author).

What does the Chamberdo? Sunnyside Chamber ofCommerce holds Business

Card exchanges at memberbusinesses to assist individualmember promotion, providesan online directory and mem-ber web pages, holds specialevents, and monthly network-ing luncheons on the secondTuesday of every month at12:30. The luncheon meetings, with speakers of interest, areat Dazies Restaurants, cost$20, and are open to anyoneinterested. LaGuardia Com-munity College, at 31-10Thomson Avenue, kindly do-nates chamber offices. (To seethe fuller line up of Chamberactivities, see article, “GoodThings Coming inSunnyside.”)

What does SunnysideShines do? Bonilla explainedthat the basic mission of everyBID could be described asfourfold, “Cleaner streets, en-hanced security, marketing andholiday lights.” The BID rentsan office is at 45-56 43rd Street.

(To see a fuller line-up ofBID activities, see article,“Good Things Coming inSunnyside.”)

As Sponge Bob wouldsay,” It’s all good!” For ayoung organization, less thantwo years old, SunnysideShines shows strong accom-plishments. The SunnysideChamber, at 66, is an institu-tion. So yes, there are manydifferences in the managementstructure and frequent compe-tition as occurs in all organiza-tions populated by Homo sa-piens. But from the point ofview that everyone wantsSunnyside to thrive and pros-per, having two organizationscaring strongly and workinghard means, in the big picture, there is no downside forSunnyside.

Increasing the visibility ofthe arts in Sunnyside is consid-ered by many to be a practicalmove to improve the area. “Whenthe artists are evident, successfollows, “ says Gerald Lederman,of Triad Management, Boardmembers of the BID and Cham-ber, who also serves as Treasurerof the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside. To add your arts organization tothe roster, contact Queens ArtExpress coordinator DavidBromley at 917-584-7710, or lo-cally, Alyssa Bonilla at 718-606-1800.

holiday lights and lovely silverdecorations on Greenpoint andQueens Boulevard already put upby Sunnyside Shines for every-one to enjoy.
