Their first meeting last month focused on self-pampering, something the 14 women who attended admitted they did rarely. Though the ladies learned how to give them- selves relaxing hand massages, they also got a chance to express themselves. The majority of the women at the work- shop had never met one another, but that didn’t stop them from being completely open and honest. The women, ranging from expecting mothers to grandmothers, talked about everything from divorce to unem- ployment, two things Smith believes takes strength to deal with. She also believes these issues need to be discussed with other women who are dealing with the same things. “[Women] have to talk about things that are important to them,” Smith said. “They need to work on the issues that prevent them from speaking out and say, ‘I’m more than mommy. I’m more than your wife.’ They have to find a place where they can practice that before they can do it.” In the end, Smith and Goldberg want the workshops to be an open forum where women can go to express how they’re feel- ing, no matter what emotion. “Even if the feeling is sadness,” Goldberg said, “If at the end of the workshop there’s a bit more feeling of comfort, than the work- shop was a success.” The next Strong Women’s Group work- shop, Get Street Smarter for Women, will be held on November 18 th at the Sunnyside Library. This workshop will teach women how to protect themselves and discuss top- ics like personal and workplace safety, do- mestic violence and laws protecting women. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2010THE WOODSIDE HERALDPAGE 4

On October 21, 2010 Woodside On The Move, Inc. participated inthe 11th annual National Lights On After School rally and celebration. The national program supported by the Afterschool Alliance, variousorganization and over a million Americans is designed to help buildsupport for afterschool program services and call attention to theafterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, helpworking families and develop tomorrow’s leaders.

Councilman James Van Bramer attended the National Light OnAfterschool Program at WOTM and showed his support by addressingthe crowd and sharing his ideas for expanding afterschool resources. Both OST afterschool program principals Anna Efkarpides from P. S. 11and Vincent Vitolo from P.S. 152 were also present and supported thenational initiative.

Nine in ten Americans think afterschool programs are important, andthey want government to invest in afterschool. Afterschool programs keepkids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families. We need quality, affordable programs for all children and families. As studies show, kids inafterschool programs do better in school, achieve higher levels of educationand have greater expectations for the future. Moms and Dads have peaceof mind, and are more productive workers knowing their children are caredfor. Afterschool programming helps to provide the vehicle of creativity ina safe and supportive environment.

Woodside on The Move, Executive Director Rosa Reyes asked localresidents, legislators and program participants and their parents to sign thekeep the lights on afterschool petition to show their support.

Woodside on the Move, Inc. applauds the efforts of our current youthprogram supporters, Congressmen Crowley, Assemblywoman CatherineNolan, Councilmen James Van Bramer and Daniel Dromm, the NYSDepartment of Justice and the NYC Department for Youth and Commu-nity Development who provide the support and funding needed for thisvery important community effort.

A Real Happy Hour WithPurpose: Boys & GirlsClubAnyone from Sunnysideand Woodside knows that we donot have seperate fundraisers. Weall share similar aspirations forthis very diverse community. Ourcommon goals bring us togetherat time of celebration and unfor-tunate tragedy. We have youngand “older” leaders on both sidesthat roll up their sleeves to getthings done as one. This is noexception. The following articleis about two proud neighborhoodsthat share a global perspective, while being committed to takecare of their own. On October22nd, a group of Sunnyside andWoodside residents created ahappy hour (that is not the revo-lutionary element). What madethis particular happy hour spe-cial is that there was a real pur-pose behind it. Lead by VinnyRenda and James Arbona, HappyHour With Purpose (HHWP) heldtheir second event at Bar 43 on43rd Street and Queens Blvd. Aportion of the proceeds went tofund The Boy’s & Girls Club ofSunnyside & Woodside. There isa shared, growing concern in ourcommunity that children don’thave the same resources that pre-vious generations we’re afforded.HHWP is thinking beyond thebasketball courts and craftingmulti dimensional programs withthe help of a powerful volunteercommittee. Our culture of fastpaced information could be ourfutures biggest asset, if channeledcorrectly. HHWP believes weneed a structure setting to equallyguide both the basketball playersand scientist of tomorrow. Thatis why the Boy’s & Girls Club ofSunnyside & Woodside was cho-sen as a recipient of over $600raised in a neighborhood bar on43rd and Queens Blvd.We havesome great people in this neigh-borhood doing great things. Wewelcome everyone to visit usonline and get involved. TheBoy’s & Girls Club of Sunnyside& Woodside: www.swbgc.orgHappy Hour With Purpose:www.hhwpevents.org

ALL IN THE FAMILYMany areas of the country are experiencing buyers markets, and

current tax laws make this a very attractive time for parents to helptheir children become homeowners. Prices and interest rates maynever be lower than they are now, so strongly consider this potentialinvestment in your children’s future.

As parents, you can provide a significant downpayment, free oftaxation. Individuals may gift up to $13,000 per year, so two parentsmaking gifts to their child and spouse can give a total of $52,000 inone year without paying gift tax!

Above and beyond the outright gift, you may loan your familymoney, as long as you charge a minimum interest rate, which iscurrently very low. Then you can make your gifts each year, and yourchild’s family can use the gifts to pay the loan.

If neither of these options is attractive, you could purchase thehome yourself and then set up a Qualified Personal Residence Trust(QPRT), with the home passing to the children at the end of anestablished term, tax free. You will need to consult with yourfinancial advisor and employ an attorney to handle this kind oftransaction.

Begin by meeting with a real estate agent and explaining yoursituation. Contrary to what you may have been hearing, there ispractically no better investment today than real estate.

Letters To

The Editor

HEALTHCARE TONE IT DOWNDear Editor,

The government recentlyclosed its “comment period” forthe regional health insuranceexchanges created by thehealthcare law.

As state officials implementtheir plans, they should strive toensure that these exchanges don’tcrowd out other options. Whilethese exchanges will work wellfor many people, many patientswill find them unsuitable.

Insurers participating in theexchanges will offer a standardset of plans that must conform tospecific government standardsand include a package of to-be-defined “essential” benefits.

The exchanges only requireinsurers to offer two types ofcoverage. “Silver” plans cover-ing 70 percent of all medicalcosts. And “Gold” plans cover-ing 80 percent.

There are people who willwant even more expansive cov-erage. And there will be patientswho want to risk higher out-of-pocket expenses for lower upfrontcharges. The exchanges aren’trequired to offer these other op-tions. And the federally mandatedminimum benefits effectivelyprohibit the exchanges from of-fering stripped-down plans.

Healthcare coverage isn’tone-size-fits-all. There needs tobe an insurance market outsidethe government exchanges toensure people get the coveragethat best fits their individual medi-cal needs and financial means.

Sincerely,Peter J. Pitts

Dear Editor,While I fully realize the ur-

gency of the Fire Department’smission, it does not give themthe right to deafen New YorkCity residents.

If the Police can use a sirenthat doesn’t cause hearing loss, Isee no reason why the Fire De-partment doesn’t adopt some-thing similar.

Their insanely loud honkingof horns should be banned, as it iscompletely unnecessary.

If our Mayor is so concernedabout our health, he should de-mand that the Fire Departmenttone it down.

Sincerely,Scandia Khan
