Locals in UniformNavy Seaman Recruit Reynolds M. Montalvo Cancio, son of Melissa G. Cancio of Las Vegas, Nev. and

Reynolds L. Montalvo, of Woodside, N. Y., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit TrainingCommand, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Montalvo Cancio completed a variety oftraining, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidencethey need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes ofsacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navyskills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed totake into account what it means to be a Sailor.

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney visited the Entrepreneur Space in Long IslandCity on Tuesday, Oct. 11. While there, the politician, who has represented her Queens-Manhattan district since 1992, discussed ways that the federal government can help smallbusinesses with Queens Economic Development Corporation Executive Director SethBornstein and E-Space Founder Kathrine Gregory. Then she toured the facility, which rentsa commercial kitchen, workstations and classrooms while also providing counseling in suchareas as marketing, negotiating and pricing.

On Sunday, October 9, 2011, the CulturalAssociation of the Molise Region hosted anopening reception for the Italian artist, IdaSaitta’s debut in New York City. Throughher paintings, in this exhibit, entitled Sicilythrough a New Mirror, Saitta pays homage toher beloved Sicily with a “dive into history”and a new look at some of the famous worksof art found in this region. In this exhibit, wesee Saitta’s interpretation of some of thedetails of some of the most significant monu-ments in Sicily, including the Fountain ofPretoria, better know as “The Fountain ofShame” in Palermo, the dancing satyr foundin the sea near the City of Mazara del Vallo, the Fountain of Orion in Messina, the Abduc-tion of Persephone in the City of Enna, andthe Red Angel by Serpotta, to name a few.

Some of Saitta’s pieces focus on thepeculiarities of these historical works of art—peculiarities that have never been featured asthey should be. In short, they are reflectedimages from a surreal mirror, capturing thatwhich serves to highlight the well-deservedprestige that puts the signature on the histori-cal period from which it comes.

Saitta takes you by the hand and leads youacross an artistic bridge between Sicily and

New York, transformed and re-conceptual-ized. The essential lines of her work highlightthe mediterranean soul, Sicilianità e non solo, and the Sicilian Culture. The elements andthe natural colors depicted in her works comealive in such a way as to create the origins andcore of a new idea of Art.

The exhibit opened on Friday, October7th and will run through Tuesday, October 18,2011 in the Buzzeo Building Gallery at 31-1636th Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11106,weekdays 4:30 PM – 8:30 PM, Sunday 4:00 –8:00 PM, other times by appointment.

The Cultural Association of the MoliseRegion is a cultural association for Italian-Americans, Americans with Italian roots, and anyone else interested in the rich cultureof Italy.
