A Family Blessing Lord of all, Bless our families. Be they formed by blood or by circumstance, Make them holy. As you reveal yourself to us in three persons: Father, Son, and Spirit, And in the relationship that flows among the three, May we find you in our relationships. In our marriages, in our families, In our households, in our communities, In our global humanity. May we look across all that divides us And see family, And embrace as a family does. And love as a family ought to. For where two or three gather in your name There are you in the midst. There indeed are you, The one for whom we long so deeply.

From the Pastor’s Desk

One of the things that has fascinated me since Pope Francis has become Pope is the way in which so many things he says are greeted as if they were brand new ideas, never before spoken in the history of the world. And while Pope Francis’s approach and style may well be different, I have to tell you that he just isn’t that original. Now that he has landed on our shores, it seems that some people are deeply disturbed by his message, leading them to brand him a Marxist, a pawn of the one-world-government conspiracy, and worse. Apparently he has said some pretty outrageous things. Here’s a few:

He keeps talking about justice for all, rather than just a few. He wants to judge the success of economic systems (including sacred capitalism) according to how those systems affect all people rather than just a privi-leged elite. He also wrote a whole letter about how we (all of us) have responsibility for taking care of “our com-mon home”, when all we’re doing is ravaging the earth to make more money. This pope also seems to approve of negotiations and agreements between peoples and nations that keep every one safer. He’s probably also against war, if you can believe it. None of this is new — it has been said by previous popes, and is an integral part of the social teachings of the Church. So you see, he’s not that original.

It also seems that he’s got a not so hidden agenda about human dignity. Every time he encounters a situa-tion where people are suffering and oppressed, he claims that those people have a dignity given them by God that cannot be ignored. And he says we need to respect that dignity, even if they are not yet born, if they speak a dif-ferent language, or live in a different culture, or even if they are immigrants! You’ll notice that this South Ameri-can pope keeps talking about the hungry, the thirsty, the ill, the naked and the imprisoned. Well, he didn’t come up with that list either. If you look at Matthew 25, (Jesus’ account of the last judgment), you’ll see that Pope Fran-cis stole that list right out of the Bible. As a matter of fact, a lot of these new and outrageous things the Holy Fa-ther is saying are very, very close to things that Jesus himself said. Nothing original here!

Yes, there’s something different about him. I think it’s about his simplicity, and his authenticity. He’s be-ing driven around Washington, D.C. in a Fiat, surrounded by limos and big black SUV’s. And he doesn’t fit into the media driven categories of liberal or conservative or even Marxist. For him, as Pope, it’s about the Good News of the Gospel. It’s about the beauty of God’s creation, especially the dignity of human beings. It’s about proclaiming God’s love and mercy, over and over again, to everyone. And that upsets people. Strange.
