What is it?

The SENTINEL Polished Rod Protection System is a revolutionary

patent pending PTFE (Teflon) bushing that is installed into the tubing

hanger and onto the polished rod inside a producing wellhead below

all surface control and prevention components of the wellhead

assembly yet allows for equipment to be run through without

problems.

It provides centralization for the polished rod to prevent metal to

metal contact with the production tubing below the tubing hanger. It

also provides support for the polished rod to prevent side loading the

stuffing box and premature wear of the stuffing box packing elements.

The system is comprised of two parts, SLEEVE and INSERT BUSHING,

which are matched to the production tubing ID, tubing hanger ID, BHP

and polished rod OD.

Benefits and Properties

• Virtually resistant to all chemicals.

• Excellent wear resistance and provides a low coefficient of friction.

• Will not damage wellhead or production components

• Very wide temperature range to allow for servicing the well without

damaging the bushing (-73°C to 204°C).

• Helical fluting allows for production fluid by-pass without high

pressure differentials (144m³/day with 100kPa differential), and

allows for polished rod supporting on the full length of the bushing.

• Cost effective repair for polished rod scoring and premature and

excessive packing wear

• Low cost initial install to prevent polished rod scoring from time of

initial completion through the life of the well.

History While attempting to fix a well with major polished rod scoring, it was

found that the surface wellhead equipment was not square to the sub-

surface tubulars. This created a deviation between the wellhead and

the sub-surface production tubing. The pumpjack is designed to

stroke the polished rod in a true vertical fashion. This minor deviation

at ground level was found to be approximately 3.0°. Other installs

were found to have slightly less of a deviation (+/-1°) depending on

well design for possible polished rod contact. Another factor into

some of the scoring issues was pumpjack alignment and sometimes

both.

Over the length of the polished rod, while the pumpjack was stroking

the rod string, at the bottom of the rod stroke the polished rod was

>8m below the stuffing box. The space between the OD of the polished

rod and the ID of the tubing was reduced to nil as the polished rod

was no longer running true vertical below ground but trying to run in-

line with the deviation, creating metal to metal contact and polished

rod scoring.

All available sucker rod centralizing equipment was used in an

attempt to solve the problem with the scoring to no avail. Through

trial and error on many wells it was also found that after the initial

start-up, there were no signs of polished rod scoring and it was not

long before the scoring started to become evident. On inspection of

the pony rods below the polished rod it was found that the guides

were worn to the point that the polished rod was able to contact the

production tubing ID creating the score.

The SENTINEL Polished Rod Protection System was conceived,

prototyped and installed to prevent the scoring on some major

problem wells to test the viability of the system and continues to

perform above expectation. It is a valuable piece of affordable

equipment that can be installed into the wellhead at the start of the

well. Prevention rather than reaction is always more cost effective.

changes, wellhead and pumpjack realignment as well as sucker rod

centralization equipment used prior to SENTINEL install.

Well#2 – New well that began to score shortly after well had been

producing.

Well #4 – Problem well that had numerous work-overs to attempt to

solve the scoring issue. Two joints larger tubing ran at surface to

attempt to allow more clearance between the polished rod OD and the

tubing ID.

In 4 wells, if the SENTINEL Polished Rod Protection System had been

available and installed it could have saved the prime contractor large

amount of downtime and costs.

Historically it has been found that mobilizing crews to perform one

polished rod change in a day ranges $10,000 - $17,000 depending if

your BHP has to be tripped out of the well due to seizing or other

potential problems with unseating and extent of damaged sucker rod

equipment.

Other benefits

The SENTINEL Polished Rod Protection System not only protects the

polished rod, which is the most expensive of the rods installed into the

well, but while the polished rod is being centralized at the tubing

hanger, it is also providing centralization up through the wellhead and

stuffing box alleviating side loading of the stuffing box elements,

which save the operator field maintenance costs down the road in

terms of stuffing box packing changes and crews to perform the

changes.

Operators have the chance to save big costs with one affordable

install, as one system install saves $10,000 - $17,000 on one scored

polished rod. The SENTINEL Polished Rod Protection System then

becomes a valuable asset in the design of the wellhead, pump and

rods.

After the SENTINEL Polished Rod Protection System install, the

“insert bushing” is the only component that would require

replacement after it wears down to the wear indicators. The wear

indicators were designed and implemented to allow operators, during

their runs, to visually inspect the polished rod for indications of a

vertical brass discoloration on the polished rod from the indicators, as

this is the only way to tell whether the insert bushing is wearing out.

The cost of replacing an insert bushing costs considerably less than

changing a polished rod.

To: Chris Colenutt Re: Sentinel Polished Rod Protector We have installed four systems to date and have seen great improvements on our run times. Scored polished rods have been an issue in the past. Numerous attempts have been made to correct the issue with limited success. Upon installation of the Sentinel Polished Rod Protector system, the issues have been reduced. I was personally on location when one of the systems was installed. The pump jack was aligned and roller guides were installed. This reduced the scoring but it was still evident. As soon as the system was installed the scoring disappeared. The installation on this particular well was installed 8 months ago and there has been no issues since. Currently our longest running system was installed 13 months ago. We have not seen any issues since the installation.
