SHARPEVILLE. - Although big in size, low level dams can be a great dangerfor river users. A recent drowning at theDlomo Dam highlighted why the gene-ral public must put safety at the forefrontof their minds. This comes after a managed about 40 to 45 was found dead onMonday afternoon.

The shocking discovery was made bya well known fisherman who immedia-tely alerted the police. On arrival Policefound the deceased floating in the Damon his back.

It is suspected that the man might ha-ve been a traditional healer because ofthe tattoo on his shoulder - the symbolof a diamond- and he had dreadlocks;traditional beads bound both his arms.He was wearing blue jeans and a T-shirtwith yellow sneakers.

Local traditional healers were calledto the scene to try and identify the decea-sed without any luck as none knew him.

Some community members also tried toidentify him with no luck.

As the man had a lot of visible injurieson his body because of the time he’d spentin the water only a post mortem will deter-mine what the cause of his death was, though it is suspected that he might havebeen killed somewhere else and thrown in-to the dam.

According to Sharpeville Police spokes-person Rapule Pitso, this is the third inci-dent in one year in which all three victimswere in the same age group.

He says, “We would like to appeal toall community members to come forwardand identify the man or if they have losta family member or relative who might bea traditional healer.”

The body was taken to the SebokengHospital Mortuary.

The body of a suspected traditional healer was found floating in the Dlomo Damon Monday afternoon in Sharpeville.

EVATON. - Usindiso (the Save) Non-Govern-mental Organisation believes in creating pro-ducers - not consumers. It held a drug awaren-ess campaign and different stakeholders suchas NYDA, CANSA and Love Life attended iton Friday.

The event was held in the New Hall at Eva-ton West. Those in attendance agreed thatdrugs kill and cripple the lives of young people, ultimately destroying them.

Ward councillor NomsaMooi was very pre-cise in her talk to women about abuse and drugabuse. “We cannot blame alcohol and our ad-dictions if we agreed to start using it in the firstplace. The abuse of women and children is aserious matter that we should start taking res-ponsibility for, and we should stop blaming iton the past and on our upbringing,” saysMooi.

She further lambasted women for abusingtheir own children. She urged them to start tea-ching their children about life. “Women are al-

so substance abusers and they also abusetheir husbands and children. All in all abuseis a serious offence. We should be carefulnot to give birth to a bitter nation throughwhat we say,” says Mooi.

Duduzile Matontsi from NYDA (Natio-nal Youth Development Agency) says theabuse of substances and alcohol has nevermade any person high - it degrades him/her.“When you are intoxicated you feel highwhen you are actually low, since your mindis unbalanced.”

Mxolisi Sebobo from SAMAG (SouthAfrican Men’s Action Group) deals with is-sues affecting men and repositioning themas head of the home. He added that if mencould take their position and be protectorsand pillars of strength to their families,South Africa and the world won’t be the sa-me. After numerous dignitaries had brieflytaken the podium there was a mini marchagainst drug abuse.

BOIPATONG.- A 42-year-old man who isHIV positive was recently sentenced to eightyears in prison by the Vanderbijlpark Magis-trates Court. The sentencing of the accused was the re-

sult of accusations from five different womenwho claimed to have been Aids-infected bythe accused. These five women had no ideathat the ‘love of their lives’ had been livingwith HIV/Aids for eight years.According to Police a full report from the

Health Department indicates that the accusedhad been taking ARVs since 2005. “Through

intensive investigation Police managed to geta full report from the Department of Healthsince the complainants were keen to know theoutcome of the case. At this present momentPolice cannot divulge the status of the fivewomen in terms of their privacy and theirrights,” says Police spokesperson ThembekaKoago.Sedibeng Ster ventured to speak to the five

infected women, but it proved impossible topersuade them to relay their story to the pu-blic. However, Emfuleni Local MunicipalHealth MMC Sello Pitso was at liberty to at-test to the matter. “It is an unfortunate situati-

on for those infected by the accused. Westrongly condemn what has happened. A per-sonwho is HIV positive should take responsi-bility and have acceptance counselling,” saysPitso. He adds that, as the Health Department, they will get to the bottom of this matter andensure that all the affected and infected per-sons receive counselling.

VEREENIGING. - “We work hard here atMidvaal.” This was the unanimous messa-ge from numerous employees of MidvaalPrivate Hospital who went on strike lastFriday. They has had it up to the gills andexchanged their Midvaal uniforms fortheir green and yellow union T-shirts.

The gates in font of Midvaal Hospitalwere closed and those who wanted to visitthe hospital needed to use an alternativeentrance. The Midvaal uniformsthey usually wore were noti-ced hanging over the pa-lisades, togetherwith the bannersand posters. Some ofthe pos-tersread:“Awaywith yourlabour bro-kers, away, away,” “Awaywith your abnor-mal workinghours” and “Stop encouragingracism”. These unhappyMidvaalHospitalemployees told Sedibeng Ster that theydidn’t get the salaries they deserved or sa-laries commensurate with the constitution. Most of their salaries are between R1 800en R3 500 and they want to know what

they must do with this. “We don’t even get anymedical benefits and ifwe are sickwe are takento Kopanong Hospital, but all other staff mem-bers receive medical benefits,” Meisie Nhlapo, the shop steward, said. “We do everything, butwe don’t get the money,” another one toldSedibeng Ster.

According to them some employees whoused to get paidR19 an hour. Now they

suddenly receive decreased salariesof R13 an hour and now there are de-ductions, such as pension fund, which never appeared on their pays-

lips.Most of these employees are

members of the Hotel, Liquor,Catering and Allied WorkersUnion (HOTELICCA) aswell as the National Councilof Trade Unions (NACTU).

The representatives ofthe unions had a meetingwith the management ofMidvaal Hospital on Mon-day while unhappy em-ployees continued withtheir strike. Sedibeng Ster

asked Mr Gordon Caine forcomment, but has not yet re-

ceived a response.

The past week opened my eyes to the realitythat is faced by the youth in this country; thiswas largely due to the registration messagesthat were hammered into our heads.

I made sure that I engaged the youth so asto get to know their views about the upcomingnational elections. The evidence of the neglectof our youth was all around. The youth tell methat they are not going to waste their time andregister to vote or even go to the polls next year.

They tell me about the hardships that they

face when they want to further their educationfollowing their completion of Grade 12; theytell me about how hard it is for young peopleto receive financial assistance from institutionsto open businesses. These young people tell meabout the work experience that is needed whenthey apply for jobs. ‘Where are we going toget this when we come straight from Collegeor university?’ they ask.

Finally they tell me about the exploitationthey face when they are given temporary jobswith low wages or are employed on a contractbasis without any guarantee of a permanentpost and when they raise their voices they aredemoted, retrenched or straight out fired from

these positions. According to experts, two-thirds of Africa’s population are below 35 yearsand four out of every five young people livein developing countries. In survey after survey, the problems facing young people have beenidentified as unemployment, education, theirhealth and a lack of a voice in issues affectingthem.

The thousands of our youth standing by theroadsides in urban areas giving pamphlets out, selling garments, flowers and other things willnot make us the nation we need to be.

Youth unemployment is now a global pan-demic. It has now overtaken HIV/AIDS anddrug abuse. Youth unemployment and unde-

remployment is increasingly recognised as apotential trigger for social instability in otherworld regions. After having been largely ne-glected in national development agendas, theimmense challenges youth face to get jobsmust obtain prominence, therefore the youthmust also engage themselves in these issues.National processes for development cannothappen without the energy of the youth. Youngpeople must be urged to remain engaged in allthe national processes and advocate for theirown interests, not that of patronising politici-ans. The youth employment challenge con-fronts all youths in this country, regardless oftheir stage of socio-economic development andpolitical affiliation.

‘A nation that does not take care of its youngis a doomed nation.’

BOPHELONG. - Although the election datehas not been set, some political parties are al-ready registering with their voices by closingroads with stones that bear rival protest mes-sages. Some residents of Muvhango exten-sions, the greater Bophelong area, were re-cently left thirsty for two days as their tapsran dry.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) mem-bers apparently persuaded the community tojoin them to take to the streets as they couldnot resist the thirst. Sedibeng Ster was in-formed by residents that they had spotted aColt double-cab bakkie of an EEF member. They alleged that the driver of the bakkie -Mabuza Motsoenyane - was seen transportingmembers to barricade roads. Others ran amokwith Lady Luck-driven impunity, trying to at-tack foreigners’ tuck shops. Shop owners gotthe message quickly and closed down.

Motsoenyane confirmed that the EFF ledthe protests because ELM Municipality haddriven them wild by closing the taps.

“How can we be required to check for ournames on voter registration lists when we aredenied water?” he asked.

“The municipality takes us for granted,”muttered an unhappy member of the EFF.

The Bophelong Golden Highway intersec-tion robots were closed with rocks that weremoved into the road by residents. Motoristswere forced to make speedy U-turns as thepolice were battled to bring the situation un-der control.

The following morning tap-functions wererestored though water was pouring out at alow pressure.

Registration stations operated smoothlywithout intimidation in Bophelong. EmfuleniLocal Municipality Communications officerKlaas Mofomme said: “Any problem relatedto a shut-down of water would immediatelyhave been broadcast by ELM to the communi-ty through radio.”

Sasolburg.

• Upgrading of the electronic timing device

• Repair of spectator and participant ablution facilities

• Main office building

• Ablution facilities for officials

• Replacement of the roofs of the refreshment kiosks

• Maintenance work to improve safety conditions

Most importantly, the entire tartan track is being replaced.

When the revamp has been done, the track will be a Level two

track, which will enable the stadium to host national events

where all records will be accepted by the International Athletics

The DP deVilliers Stadium, managed by a controlling body, is

looking forward to hosting top events as soon as the upgrading

project has been completed.

Currently the tartan track at the DP deVilliers stadium is being

replaced to be ready at the beginning of the new year for the

2014 athletics season.

The DP deVilliers stadium is a sports arena that was built by

Sasol in the 1970s for the local community. The original aim

of the stadium was to increase sports engagement within the

communities of the Metsimaholo area and also to make suitable

sports practice conditions available to athletes in the area. More

than 40 years later, this aim is still as relevant as ever.

The revamping project, that began in September 2012, is

expected to be done by the end of November 2013.Work at the

stadium include:

• Repair and upgrading of the flood lights to enable television

broadcasts in the evening

• Athletics equipment such as new hurdles

SEBOKENG. - Sedibeng College CulturalGroup lived up to expectation as a musicalgroup bent on bringing nothing but the bestentertainment in the college.Sedibeng Ster caught up with the group last

Thursday during rehearsals at the college. Sin-ce these young men and women are tertiarystudents much is expected from their parentstoward their education, while the college sha-res the same sentiments. However, these young musicians have one

thing in common, which is the love of musicand education. The group was started yearsago by former students who had representedSedibeng College Sebokeng.

Today the legacy is continued by studentswho are stepping right into the footsteps oftheir predecessors. “We sing cultural musicwhich is not common to any other young per-son these days. The main objective of thegroup is to keep cultural music alive,” saysSam Motaung, one of the group leaders.“Cultural music is not popular among our

peers, but we are trying every means to keepit alive as part of our heritage and tradition,”adds group conductor Teboho Makume. When asked howmusic and studywere jug-

gled, or whether one tends to be the main ob-jective, Makume responded that their immer-sion into cultural music did not mean they hadforgortten why they were there - to study.

SEBOKENG. – Phamehlo Primary Schoolcelebrated a cultural fun day on Friday whereparents and learners enjoyed good perfor-mances. Parents graced the fun day celebrati-on with love and dignity. Learners had muchto offer to all the audiences and much wasexpected from them. There were all kinds ofperformances - spiritual dances, cultural dan-ce which includes Sotho, Zulu and other nati-onalities. A beauty pageant was performed bythe senior phase. Music was part of the day

and a key element of celebration was - timeand again - when the programme director pul-led out audience members to participate in adance. Nomasonto Ndosi, a parent, says shewas very pleased by the event and the child-ren’s performance. “All of these children out-did themselves, all thanks to the teachers andthe greatest glory to the Almighty; now weknow that our children have hidden talent.“Charity begins at home and talent is iden-

tified in schools,” says Lindiwe Radebe whois an educator at the school.

Most employers pay salaries earlierthan normal in December. This is veryconvenient for most employees but canlead to that familar and tragic back-lashof financial difficulties if early pay isnot properly controlled. The first con-cern is with regards to debit orders. Itmay happen that by the time the normalmonthly debit orders go into the ac-count, that there are insufficient fundsas a result of the salary that came in ear-ly so that the funds are used up. Suchinstances are also accompanied by char-ges from the bank. One successful debitorder can charge a client up to R110-00,depending on the bank and type of ac-

count. After the charges, you then facea possible double deduction (whichmost companies prefer) in January e.g.your single premium debit order ofR750.00 will be R1500 in January. Thisis one of the cases that make Ja-nuary difficult considering allthose expenses associated withthe beginning of the year, e.g.school uniforms, school fees, transport, etc. So it is advisablefor the consumer to arrangewith the debit order company to deductearly as well (if you know your paydatein December), or once you get paid startfirst by paying your instalments in cash.Be in control, it’s your money.

SEDIBENG.-The celebration of a young couplewho have stepped out of the known and divedhead-first into the unknown as they begin a life

together as husband and wife is no smallthing.November 9 of 2013 saw the beginning

of a long, wonderful and prosperous jour-ney for youngBotleMahele andThaboLet-sabo. On the morning of the wedding thebride was escorted out of her home by her

father, heading for St Francis Fiesta Church inVanderbijlpark, where Botle was awaited by hersoon to be husband Thabo Letsabo.Emotions were raw as Mr Mahele gave his

daughter away into a life of marriage where theyoung couple were wedded by Father Liam. After Father Leam had a word or two with the

couple, vows and rings exchanged and FatherLeam blessed the marriage. The couple were, forthe first time, presented to friends and family asMr and Mrs Letsabo. With jubilation in the air, we left for the recepti-

on where the union was celebrated with friends, strangers and neighbours who eagerly waited tosee Mr and Mrs Letsabo for the very first time.As the day drew to a close, the newlyweds werecongratulated and encouraged as they entered intoa new chapter of their lives as husband and wife.Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Letsabo.

SHARPEVILLE. - It was heartwarming when the junior soccerteam captains were given a plat-form from which to speak duringthe MCS Soccer TournamentLaunch at Noma’s Kitchen inVu-ka on Sunday. The organisers took these yo-

ung ‘captains fantastic’ by surpri-se when they asked them to comeforward to speak on behalf oftheir teams. The launch was partof the semi-finalist draw for theu/13, u/15 and u/17 teams. Theseyoung captains passed this testwith flying colours, despite thefact that they were not informedthey would be asked to make aspeech at the launch. Guests andsponsors’ representatives couldnot believe it when these youngs-ters boldly took centre stage andmade many sit back and listen totheir interesting speeches. Thetournament brought some inno-vation to local football with te-ams from all over the Sedibengregion participating in this annualtournament.A Sebokeng Academy u/17

captain urged his opponents to upthe standard of the tournament inthe field of play, much to the de-

light of guests.Sello Tshabalala, tournament

chairman, says they brought a lotof innovation to this year’s tour-nament. “We have decided to in-troduce new things to motivatethese youngsters on and off thefield. We wanted to surprise them by

inviting them to the launch andasking them to speak. Our intenti-on is also to start to develop theirpotential because you could hearsome of them have the potentialto become Bafana Bafana cap-tains,” he concludes.Meanwhile, the semi-final ga-

SEBOKENG. - Sebokeng Ajax FC left the Safa SedibengSAB League with disappointing results when they lost1-0 to Try Me Again FC at the Shakespeare Stadium onSunday.Despite the results the Ajax Coach Master Zondo says

he is not disappointed with his team’s performance. Spea-king to Sedibeng Ster Sports, Zondo says he could notfault his players as they did everything by the book butwere unfortunate to earn a penalty.Zondo says they could have won the game if they had

converted their chances into goals after creating so manyscoring opportunities for the better part of the game. Theydid not look like a team just promoted to the SAB Leaguethis season. However, if their weekend performance isanything to go by, there is no doubt that Ajax will bethe team to watch this season. They played like they havebeen in the SAB League before and it was also encoura-ging to see them playing the same kind of football theyplay while they were still campaigning in the PromotionLeague. To date, Sebokeng has been promoted to the Safa SAB

League after doing well at the Promotion Play-Offs. Theywere campaigning at Stream A. Zondo says he will notput his players under any pressure as they try to adaptto the SAB League. He believes after five games his boyswill be used to the demanding schedule of the SAB Lea-gue. “I think if we can continue to play the way we didagainst Try Me Again, I have no doubt that we will finishat a related position on the log at the end of the season. This was an encouraging performance, taking into consi-deration that it was our first game in the league. My boysadapted very quickly and one could not tell which wasthe new team in the league. Make no mistake, Try MeAgain is the best team in the league but we gave a goodfight. After the game they should be complimented forgiving Try Me Again a run for their money,” says Zondo.Sebokeng Ajax will be away to RESA at the Dick Fou-

rie Stadium on Saturday. The game kick-off is at 15:00.Zondo was confident that he will come back home withmaximum points come Saturday. In another SAB League match played at the George

Thabe Stadium on Saturday, Vaal Milano and Ghetto pla-yed to a goalless draw in the Sharpeville derby.

Enough of Vaal Killer soccer grounds! Shoo-ting From The Hip wishes to take this oppor-tunity to complete my congratulations to thedevelopment coaches, especially to the Emfu-leni Local Football Association’s Stream Afor their commitment. For the past two months the development

coaches in this streamhave beenworking tire-lessly to keep youngsters busy and focused.Shooting From The Hip never saw this be-

fore, where development coaches meet al-most every day just to talk about the futureof football not only in this stream but in Sedi-beng as whole. It is encouraging also to see the coaches

who at one stage quit football because of dirtypolitics in this region, making a comeback tofootball and making a huge difference. Shoo-ting From Hipwants to compliment those co-aches for their effort. This is the right direction and maybe also

an opportunity to start development centresin this region to improve the standard of foot-ball. Shooting From The Hip encourages coa-ches from other areas to start coming togetherfor the sake of the youngsters. It is high time development coaches wor-

ked in unison. When Shooting From The Hip debates or

highlights the challenges that football facesin this region, some of the development coa-ches think of Yours Truly as a gratuitouslycontroversial ‘Self Appointed Minister ofFootball’. Football needs someone with‘balls’ (pun intended) who is brave enoughto lead the development coaches in this regi-on.The sooner they realise this the better, be-

cause we need to get rid of the ‘I’ mentalityin local football. In case you are not aware, this region has the potential to produce po-werhouses in South African football as wasonce the case. Shooting From The Hipdoesn’t need to mention those who hoisted

the Sedibeng flag high in the past, but whatis important is to move local football forward. We can learn from other countries, specifi-

cally Spain, which dominates the world withits famous ‘tiki-taka’. The foundation thatSpain has laid over the past eight years is star-ting to bear fruit. This is the approach that South African

football should take – to come up with a ten-year plan to move football forward. To thosedevelopment coaches in Stream A: gentle-men, continue with those meetings and oneday somebody will realise how important itis to discuss the future of football in this regi-on. Shooting From The Hip would like to seeother coaches join those gatherings. Let’s mo-ve this bus in the right direction.

SEBOKENG. - Expect sparks to flywhen the Sedibeng Boxing Associati-on in conjunction with the SowetoBoxing Association hosts Boxing De-velopment scheduled to take place atthe Saul Tsotetsi Stadium on Saturday.

This mouth-watering news was re-vealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Than-duxolo Madikizela from Emfuleni Lo-cal Municipal Sports and Recreation. The tournament is part of the ongoingboxing revival in the Sedibeng region.

According to Madikizela they ex-pect boxing clubs from as far afield asSoweto to ‘trade leather’ on Saturday.Former boxing greats Aaron ‘Ak47’Kabi’s boxing club will also take partin this long-awaited amateur boxingtournament.

Madikizela says the first bout willstart at 12:00 while weighing of boxerswill start from 9:00.

The event presents Sedibeng boxerswith an opportunity to showcase theirGod-given talent against their Sowetocounterparts.

Some local boxing names expectedto honour the event include BonganiMahlangu from Boipatong. Madikize-la says this is the last tournament ofthe year.

“The tournament is part of our cam-paign to restore boxing in Sedibeng re-gion and I want to thank the SowetoBoxing Association for accepting ourinvitation and also helping us revivethe sport in this region,” he says. Me-anwhile, Madikizela urges all Sedi-beng region residents to come in num-bers to support the initiative on Satur-day. He believes the tournament willtake Sedibeng boxing to the next level.

SEDIBENG. - It was a busy weekend for SafaSedibeng Regional Head Coach ThulaniMthimkulu as the regional squads were selec-ted at Shakespeare and Saul Tsotetsi SportsComplexes on Saturday and Sunday. Mthim-kulu, who coordinated the process, believesthat there is lots of potential as far as talentis concerned in this region. However, he saysthat he was aware that good talent was alsoleft behind due to the challenges some of theareas experienced. He believes this is some-thing that needs to be addressed in the nearfuture to ensure that all the players attendthe trials. For example, Mthimkulu says 162players turned out for the trials for the u/13and u/15s. Given the statistics Mthimkulusays Sebokeng and Evaton jointly brought57 players while Boitshepiville brought 18players and Lesedi only 11 players in theu/13 category.

In u/15 trials Sebokeng and Evatonbrought 58 players while Boitshepivillebrought only 18 players.

To make things worse, Midvaal did not ha-ve one representative in both the u/13 andu/15 while Lesedi brought only the u/13s.Mthimkulu says these are some of the chal-lenges that need to be dealt with in the nearfuture to give all youngsters a fair chanceto participate in trials of this kind.

“I will compile the report to Safa Sedibengregarding this situation because we were ex-pecting other areas to bring their players asthis is the Sedibeng squad,” he says

On the other hand, Mthimkulu also sugge-sted that the criteria change next year alongwith how to select the squads.

On Sunday, Mthimkulu was at the SaulTsotetsi Sports Complex where the Sedibengregional ladies squad for u/13 and u/15 was

also selected. Speaking to Sedibeng SterSport, Mthimkulu says he will make some re-quest to Safa Sedibeng as a way forward whenit comes to the selection of the teams accor-ding to the areas. The Sedibeng Regional

squad will be among the Safa regions that willparticipate at the Futsal Inter-ProvincialChampionship scheduled to take place atNgoako Ramathlodi Stadium in Seshegofrom November 27-30.
