Welcome Back It has been wonderful greeting all our students and families back for another year of learning at CBPS. We were delighted to welcome our newest students, Kindergarten 2020, yesterday. I hope you have all felt welcomed and your children have enjoyed the start to the year. Meet and Greet afternoon As part of our start of the year, we like to have a parent/teacher meet and greet. This will be on Tuesday Feb 11 at 3:15 to 4:30pm. Please come along to enjoy a free afternoon tea and the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher. Sport in School – Athletics We have been fortunate to have access to a grant for a sport program in athletics. This will begin in Week 4. It will run over 8 weeks and includes the facilitators supporting us at our school carnival in Term 2. The cost for this program would usually be around $50, but with school and federal government support, it will be provided to families for only $10. A note will come home today and on Skoolbag. Communication We are always looking at ways we can ensure adequate communication across the school. We have a variety of avenues, including our electronic sign, fortnightly newsletter (even weeks), Facebook, school website, Seesaw and Skoolbag. Please utilise these to gain information, as it is often the case that information has been disseminated when we have queries. Skoolbag will continue to be our primary formal method of communication. Please download the Skoolbag app. Facebook is predominantly for positive news, updates and event reminders. Seesaw is for class teacher and school work/student learning only. We are hoping to improve the way we utilise this in 2020. The school will continue to utilise the SMS absence notification system that was implemented 2019. Works and upgrades You will have noticed lots of improvements around the school. Most of the external areas have been painted. Many classrooms have had sections painted and there is new carpet in Support Unit and Admin areas. We have had new basketball backboards, asphalting and some signage installed. Some old fences on the residential side have been replaced and a new covered walkway will join the library to I block in coming weeks. I am sure you will agree that these works are giving us all a stronger sense of pride. Last year, I mentioned that we will be completing a security upgrade, which will include electronic gates at the Chittaway Rd side entrances. This work had been postponed several times while other works were complete. The gates will be installed during Term 1. You will have noticed a security upgrade in the admin also. All these measures are designed to keep our students safe and improve the facilities at our great school. Resource Packs Our resource packs are a cost effective way to ensure all the students have sufficient resources throughout the year. The payment for this includes, workbooks, all stationery and classroom supplies, subscriptions for digital technology, student printing/copying and digital access to Sound Waves, our spelling program for 2020. It also includes ongoing, year long replenishment. Thank you to the many families that have paid already. Novel Coronavirus As you are aware we have been liaising with our health colleagues in NSW and the Commonwealth to continue to provide you with the latest information on the Novel Coronavirus. So far, there haven’t been any students at our school that would fit the criteria for exclusion but I have included the most recent update from the department below: In line with this updated position as of Sunday 2 February 2020 our advice on exclusion for students and staff is as follows:

• Any student or staff member arriving in Australia from 1 February 2020 who has been in mainland China or transited through mainland China (not just Hubei province) is excluded from school and child care

Page 3: SCHOOL, HOME & COMMUNITY Term 1 Week 6...download the Skoolbag app. Facebook is predominantly for positive news, updates and event reminders. Seesaw is for class teacher and school

services for a period of 14 days from the date they left mainland China as the Novel Coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks.

• Any confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return

• Close contact of a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus will be excluded for 14 days since last contact with the confirmed case.

• Any student or staff member arriving before 1 February our previous advice remains that students or staff who were in Hubei province are excluded from school or child care services for 14 days, and those who were in the rest of China are requested not to not attend school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving China.

Mobile Device Restriction Early last year I provided some information regarding the review into the non-educational use of mobile devices in NSW schools. A new policy governing student use of digital devices and online services will apply in all public schools from 2020. It includes a digital device restriction from primary schools. Information can be found at the link below. The new policy covers student use of mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, laptops and any other device that allows connectivity to the internet and applications. It builds upon the important work in schools to teach young people to use digital technology in safe, responsible and respectful ways as we prepare students for life beyond the classroom. https://education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/strategies-and-reports/our-reports-and-reviews/mobile-devices-in-schools Please spend the time to read through the FAQs or familiarise yourself with the information. In summary, Primary-aged students will not be allowed to use digital devices during class time, recess and lunch, unless for an educational purpose or where a student needs it for other reasons, such as an adjustment to support their learning and wellbeing. Please rest assured that for most primary schools, including us here at CBPS, this reflects current practice and will not represent a major change. In line with expectations we will work to update our procedures to ensure they align to the new policy. For those who are unaware, all student mobile phones are to be handed in at the office at the start of the day and are collected as the students leave in the afternoon. Smart watches may present a developing issue, I ask to avoid any problems that smart watches be kept at home. Bus safety and Bus zone changes Please be aware about changes to our bus zones for 2020. The council, through Redbus, have advised that the bus zone will change to 8am-9:30 and 2:30pm-4pm. This will ensure the safety of everyone during bus arrivals, especially during the morning period with many buses arriving just after 8am. Please be aware of these changes. Allergy Awareness There are students at Chittaway Bay PS that have allergies, including eggs and nuts. We continue to ask that families be considerate with their child’s food choices, such as avoiding peanut butter and eggs. We ask that our whole community be allergy aware in support of our students that have the potential for an anaphylactic reaction. Have a great week of learning CBPS, Mr Green Principal

Download this App to be kept up to date with everything that is happening at CBPS. It features Events, News, Newsletters, Documents, and push notification alerts direct from the School.
