Seems lately the news is filledwith news stories coveringexpensive government pro-grams and citizens protestingthe spending of our tax dollars;but here is a great example agovernment spending programgetting it right by seeking toreward those Americans whohave done so much for theircountry -- our armed servicesmembers.For most Americans, thehome buyer tax credit expirestoday on April 30. ButCongress, recognizing thatmany members of the military,foreign service, and intelligenceservice members may havemissed out on the opportunityto take advantage of the creditdue to multiple deploymentsoverseas, has given servicemembers more time to takeadvantage of it. The law provides qualifiedservice members who servedon official extendedduty outside of the UnitedStates for 90 days or more atany time between Jan. 1, 2009,to April 30, 2010, another yearto buy a home and claim thecredit. “Qualified service mem-bers” are defined as a memberof the uniformed services of theUnited States military, a mem-ber of the Foreign Service ofthe United States, or anemployee of the intelligencecommunity. Qualified service memberswho are eligible for the homebuyer tax credit now have untilApril 30, 2011, to sign a salescontract, and until June 30,

2011, to settle and close on thehome. Both the $8,000 first-time and $6,500 repeat homebuyer tax credits are includedin this rule. For married couples, only onespouse, not both, needs to bea qualified service memberwho served the requiredamount of extended duty out-side the United States. In many cases, the rule thatrequires buyers to repay thecredit if they move out of theirhome within three years hasalso been waived for servicemembers. If the home owner ortheir spouse receives govern-ment orders for qualified official

extended duty service andhave to sell their home, they donot have to pay back the credit.This applies even if they haveto sell in the same year theypurchased the home. The newplace of duty must be at least50 miles from the principal resi-dence being sold. The IRS also clarified that sol-diers and other service mem-bers who are wounded over-seas, or have to return to theUnited States for other medicalreasons, are not denied thecredit if their time spent over-seas ends up less than 90days. So often we hear of misguid-
