• Mrs. Ballintyn, Faculty Moderator, provides her guidance, moral support, and organizational skills at all of the team’s meetings

• The school is involved through participating and supporting service opportunities, fundraising, and school assemblies

• The Students in Action team requested the Religious Studies department to record the students’ service hours and to submit the hours to the team

• We totaled those hours and matched the total number of recorded hours against the number of enrolled students by class

The mission of the Jefferson Awards team is to promote recognition for student service that exceeds the mandated requirement of the school’s Christian Service Program. The Jefferson Awards Students in Action Team is comprised of students from all grades representing all areas of school activities and a faculty moderator as appointed by the school principal. The members of the team will actively seek other students for recognition through personal interviews with peers, create posters advertising the Jefferson Awards in our school, promote a spirit of service through their role model of giving as a team, and create a scholarship gift for graduating seniors who have done extraordinary service. The Students in Action team will apply a can-do motto in the school as a model and attitude for fellow students to follow.

Beginning the year with our vision and team ready to serve

• We openly share our input during the meetings and voluntarily rise to the challenge when needed.

• Our Students in Action succession plan includes sponsorship, team discussion and mentorship of new members.

• Over the past three years we have grown from three (3) members to 25 members.

• The team leaders will continue to screen and invite eligible candidates and Jefferson Awards recipients who exemplify leadership and service.

• The Students in Action team attended the Fall Leadership conference and participated in forming new friendships and initiating partnerships with other schools.

• Our team is comprised of 25 members:– 10 seniors, 9 juniors, 2 sophomores, 2 freshmen, our team moderator and business

• Our Principal, Fr. Bill, presented each winner with their certificate during TV morning show (WSAL)

• Students were acknowledged on Jefferson Awards Website, located on School’s webpage

• Winners appeared in the September and November editions of the Salesianum Review

• Winners announced in three Crossroads Section of The News Journal (Sept., Nov., Feb.) We will continue to submit winners for the rest of the year

• All winners were submitted to the News Journal’s Grassroots process for the State of Delaware

• Encouraged interested volunteers to check our Service Website where we have posted numerous volunteer opportunities• Assisted many volunteer groups in the school:

– Student Council, Interact Club, Senior Board, Junior Class Officers, Campus Ministry/Salesian Spirituality Commission, and Salesianum Parents Association

• Assisted students, DJ and Parker Sutera, by helping them raise funds for Teens Against Poverty (Hoagies for Haiti)

• Demonstrated the benefits of volunteering in the community by establishing our partnership with Connecting Generations

Through the recognition of students and our continual participation in school committees and functions, the Students in Action team

has kept the mission of service at the forefront of students’ attention.

• The Students in Action program was recognized as an official activity of the school and students receive academic credit through the Service Program

• We announced that the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be named in honor of Reverend John Spellman, OSFS and that the senior scholarship gift will be in recognition of our principal, Reverend William T. McCandless, OSFS

• Lastly, the team was able to raise more than double the amount of money than the previous year and decided to create three categories for the distribution of the scholarship money: the senior who did the most service for the community; for the school and for the Students in Action team

• Invited Lakshman Somasundaram and Coby Owens (2013) to the team enhancing our teams’ cultural diversity

• Partnered with the UD Men’s Basketball Team in our Fr. Spellman 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

• Collaborated with St. Anthony of Padua Grade School in our Indian School Project

• Participating in the Service Summit in Cincinnati

• Institutionalized the Students in Action initiative into our charism as Salesians
