KEENELAND FINISHES OUT WITH DECLINESBy Ron Mitchell
Keeneland's marathon September yearling sale,
highlighted by the sale of Beholder's half brother
for $3 million, ended Sept. 25, with strength at the
top and middle of the market and continued tepid
demand for lower-quality individuals.
Keeneland reported 2,792 horses changed hands
for $272,890,500 during the 13-day auction, a de-
crease of 3.1% from the $281,496,100 gross for 2,745
horses sold during the 12-day stand a year ago. The
cumulative average of $97,740 was a decrease of
4.7% from last year's $102,549 and the median fell
20% from $50,000 to $40,000.
From 4,479 head cataloged, 681 yearlings (15.2%)
were withdrawn from the auction, and the resulting
1,006 that did not attain their reserve prices repre-
sented 26.5% of the total through the ring.
During Sunday's final session, 147 horses sold for
$1,036,600, for an average of $7,052 and a median
of $3,200. There was no comparable session in 2015.

Angel Trumpet, brought $45,000 from Royal Flush
Racing to be the day's top price.
Keeneland officials said the sale showed stability
within the marketplace and is a positive sign for the
industry.
"Everybody I think is going to leave here feeling
very happy that the sale was a great success," said
Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales opera-
tions. "A healthy September bodes well for the whole
industry. People have left here very happy with their
sale and consignors have been very appreciative of
the buyers that showed up. Buyers are very happy
with what they bought and are looking forward to
going to the racetrack with these horses."
Russell said the increase in yearlings sold for
$500,000 to 93 this year from 69 in 2015 was indica-
tive of the strong demand at the top of the market.
"There was great selectivity but when you are
dealing with 93 half-million dollar horses there
should be," the sales company executive said.
"This was a very good sale from start to finish,"
Keeneland vice president of racing and sales Bob
Elliston said. "The results demonstrate the influence
of the Keeneland September yearling sale. In many
respects, this is the world's marketplace. Buyers
know they can get good value here, that this is where
you come to buy the most competitive horses availa-
ble at any price and level of the market."
The auction was topped by a Scat Daddy colt,
a half brother to multiple champion Beholder and
grade I winner and sire Into Mischief. The colt was
bought by M. V. Magnier on behalf of Coolmore Stud
interests from Clarkland Farm. The $3 million price
tag makes him the highest-priced yearling sold at the
September sale since 2010 and most expensive year-
ling sold at public auction in North America this year.
It marks the seventh consecutive year Keeneland has
sold the top-priced yearling in North America.
Next on the yearling sales calendar is the
Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale Oct. 4 in Timonium, Md.,
to be followed by the Oct. 24-26 Fasig-Tipton October
Sale in Lexington.
Keeneland’s next auction will be the November
breeding stock sale Nov. 8-20. BH

RUNHAPPY SET TO DEBUT AFTER FINAL PREPBy Evan Hammonds
James McIngavle's Runhappy, last year's champion
sprint male, got in his final work Sept. 25 at Keene-
land before he'll make his 2016 debut next weekend.
The 4-year-old son of Super Saver was timed in
:58 1/5 for five furlongs over the main track.
He is slated to make his 2016 bow in Churchill
Downs' Ack Ack Handicap (gr. III) Oct. 1.
Shipped from his base at the Kentucky Training
Center to Keeneland, Runhappy took to the track in
darkness around 5:45 a.m. EDT under exercise rider
Marcus O'Donnell. After trotting down the stretch
in the opposite direction, he turned and went into a
gallop. Hitting his stride as he went around the first
turn he gathered momentum down the backstretch
before breaking off.
Bloodstock agent Finn Green clocked Runhappy in
splints of :13 1/5, :25 3/5, :46 4/5, and :58 1/5.
According to data pulled from E-Trakka, a GPS
system in Runhappy's saddle pad, he got a half-mile
in :46 3/5, five furlongs in :58 3/5, and galloped out
six furlongs in 1:12.
"He's just a fast horse," Green said immediately
after the move. "I've seen a lot of horses in my time,
but I haven't seen anything like him. He's intelligent,
his cardiovascular system is off the charts, and his
biomechanics are incredible."
Trainer Laura Wohlers watched from the track's
apron.
"I don't know where he started off because I was
down by the wire to see him come down the stretch
so I couldn't see across the track," she said. "I think
he really started going around the half (mile). Marcus
started him out slow. He's been trying to get him to
relax early and finish up strong."
Cooling out at Barn 60 on Rice Road after the
move, O'Donnell said little as he hustled off to train
his own horses, but as he headed out the barn said:
"He's scary good, guys; scary good. I was trying to
gear him down after the turn, but he wanted to break
off again at the seven-eighths pole."
Gray Lyster, who bred Runhappy with his brother
Bryan and father, Wayne, was on hand for the move.
"I'm not a race guy, I'm a farm guy, but that was
just impressive," he said. "Even to the novice eye you
could see that he's just so fast."
Laura McIngvale Brown, the owner's daughter, told
Lyster, "You’ve bred yourselves a racehorse, guys."
Runhappy has not raced since wrapping up the
sprint championship with a resounding score in the
Dec. 26 Malibu Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park. The
Ack Ack Handicap is a one-turn mile race that would
serve as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I)
Nov. 5 at Santa Anita.
"I think he's ready," Wohlers said. "We're not going
to do anything else at this point. He did a strong
two-minute clip on Wednesday and did that well.
We've got this good, strong blowout under him and
now it's just letting him relax and conserve some en-
ergy. He'll go to Churchill the morning of the race. We
don't do Lasix, so there is no reason to go early." BH

TEXAS CHROME GETS THIRD STAKES IN OKLAHOMABy Jeremy Balan
Keene Thoroughbreds' Texas Chrome faced
enough trouble to have his share of excuses Sept.
25 in the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby (gr. III), but once
again found just enough to win his third straight
stakes.
Under the guidance of C.J. McMahon, the Tex-
as-bred Grasshopper colt moved into striking po-
sition turning for home in the 1 1/8-mile test, but
found no space between leading Sticksstatelydude
and slight favorite Fish Trappe Road.
McMahon and Texas Chrome ducked abruptly to
the inside for a clear path and battled to the wire as
Stickstatelydude narrowed his window on the rail,
but the game colt prevailed anyway by a half-length
at Remington Park.
It was the third straight half-length stakes score
for the J. R. Caldwell trainee, all since McMahon
hopped aboard for the first time in the Super Der-
by Prelude. He also won the Super Derby (gr. III) in
between.
"I was thinking (about) the outside and I saw (jock-
ey Rafael) Bejarano (aboard Fish Trappe Road) still
had some horse, and I knew he wasn't going to let
me through if he had as much as I thought he did,"
McMahon said. "When I saw the inside open up, I
went for it."
Breaking from the rail in the field of 11, Texas
Chrome travelled two wide in the backstretch and
three wide in the final turn as he tracked early leader
Way Striking, then Sticksstatelydude. Way Striking
set fractions of :22.95 and :47.25 through a half-mile
and Sticksstatelydude inherited the lead through
six furlongs in 1:11.69. Texas Chrome hit the wire in
1:48.94.
"I knew they had some other speed going into the
race, so my plan was to use the 1 hole to my advan-
tage and hopefully something would open up, and it
did," McMahon said.
The winner paid $6.60, $3.60, and $2.60 across
the board. Sticksstatelydude brought $5.80 and $3.60
and Fish Trappe Road delivered $3 to show.
Bred by Craig Upham, out of the Naevus mare
Margarita Mistress, Texas Chrome has eight wins
from 13 starts with earnings of $842,462. He was a
$10,000 purchase by Danny Keene out of the 2014
Fasig Tipton Texas yearling and fall mixed sale, where
Stoneview Farm consigned as agent. BH

CONNECT WELL AFTER PA DERBY VICTORYBy Blood-Horse Staff
Connect was in fine fettle Sept. 25, the day after his Pennsylvania
Derby (gr. II) victory at Parx Racing and trainer Chad Brown said
the Breeders' Cup will be considered along with several other races.
Brown, who watched the Pennsylvania Derby from Belmont
Park, was thrilled with the performance of Connect, who beat 11
other 3-year-olds, including Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum
Brands (gr. I) winner Nyquist and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) victor
Exaggerator to earn his first graded stakes win.
The colt won his first three starts this year, including the Cur-
lin Stakes July 29 at Saratoga Race Course before finishing sixth
in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 27 one start prior to Saturday's
race, which he captured by a half-length from Gun Runner.
"We always thought a lot of Connect," Brown said of Paul
Pompa Jr.'s son of Curlin. "He's a horse that took a while to come
around. He had a couple of minor injuries along the way and he
finally showed yesterday what we thought all along about him—
that he could be a top 3-year-old dirt horse.
"We're very excited about him. So far he looks OK and we'll
form a plan in the days to come. The Breeders' Cup will be con-
sidered, but there are other races as well and other routes we can
take with him. He's definitely an exciting horse for the future." BH

BELIEVE YOU CAN HALF SISTER SCORES FIRST WINBy Mary Reeder
Brereton Jones' homebred Cause She's Fast, a Cre-
ative Cause half sister to 2012 Kentucky Oaks (gr.
I) winner Believe You Can, defeated six other maiden
juvenile fillies Sept. 25 at Laurel Park to get her first
score in her second start.
Cause She's Fast broke with the leader
from post 6 but was taken back to midpack
while She's Achance Too set moderate
fractions. Making progress on the the far
turn, Cause She's Fast edged up to get past
the leader coming off the turn with pres-
sure from Natural Notion, who closed well
to edge She's Achance Too for second by a
head.
Trained by Larry Jones, Cause She's Fast
won by one length and covered six fur-
longs 1:13.04 on a fast track.
Cause She's Fast and Believe You Can
are out of the unraced El Prado mare El
Fasto. Believe You Can (Proud Citizen), who
also won the Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) and
the Tempted Stakes (gr. III), was consigned
to the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed
sale in foal to Tapit, but did not reach her reserve
price on a final bid of $4.9 million.
Cause She's Fast posted a bullet half-mile breeze
at Delaware Park Sept. 16, going :47 4/5, the best
time of eight moves at the distance that day. She
made her debut at Delaware Park Aug. 25, finishing
sixth going 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf. BH

WARD: SCOPE REVEALS LADY AURELIA BLEDBy Blood-Horse Staff
Star Kentucky-bred filly Lady Aurelia will return to
the United States for time off at co-owner Ston-
estreet Farm near Lexington after a scope following
her first defeat in the Sept. 24 Cheveley Park Stakes
(Eng-I) revealed she bled.
The 2-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy entered
Newmarket's Cheveley Park unbeaten in three career
starts, but after setting the pace showed signs of
tiring in the final 50 yards and was passed in the final
strides by winner Roly Poly and runner-up Brave
Anna, finishing third as the 4-6 favorite.
"It was a head-scratcher and disappointing," Ward
told England's Press Association about the loss, "but
when we got back to the barn, the vet scoped her
and she ended up having bled with a score of three
out of five, which, in a group I, is enough to get you
beat, probably. At least it's a bit of an answer as to
the reason why she didn't kick on that last little bit of
the race."
Ward said Lady Aurelia will stay at Stonestreet about
90 days and return to him early next year. Initial plans
call for a start in the Commonwealth Cup (Eng-I) at Roy-
al Ascot, where after winning her April debut at Keene-
land, she impressively took the Queen Mary Stakes
(Eng-I) in June before landing the Prix Morny (Fr-I) Aug.
21 at Deauville one start prior to the Cheveley Park. BH

LA CRESSONNIERE TO MISS ARCBy Blood-Horse Staff
Unbeaten dual French classic-winning filly La
Cressonniere will bypass the Prix de l'Arc de Tri-
omphe (Fr-I) Oct. 2 at Chantilly after suffering a mild
setback, trainer Jean-Claude Rouget said.
The Le Havre filly was highly regarded for the
Arc, with only Roger Varian's multiple group I winner
Postponed topping her in the pre-race market.
Unbeaten in eight starts for owners Ecurie Anto-
nio Caro and Gerard Augustin-Normand, La Cresson-
niere was pointed to Europe's premier middle-dis-
tance race off victories in the Prix de Diane Longines
(Fr-I, French Oaks) and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches
(Fr-I, French One Thousand Guineas) this spring,
followed by a two-length triumph in her Arc prep, the
Prix de la Nonette (Fr-I) Aug. 23 at Deauville.
"There is a problem. Not a very strong problem,
but we had to do treatment and that means we can-
not run her on Sunday," Rouget told Press Associa-
tion Sport. "It's not very important for the future, but
enough for her not to run on Sunday.
"We don't know exactly what it is. She has to go to
the topography and so on to have it checked it out.
The problem is towards the back." BH

CALIFORNIA CHROME ARRIVES AT SANTA ANITABy Blood-Horse Staff
California Chrome, North America's all-time lead-
ing money earner, arrived by van at Santa Anita
Park Sept. 25 to begin final preparations for the
$300,000 Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 1, the
final major steppingstone to the $6 million Breeders'
Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 5.
Owned by California Chrome LLC, a partnership
consisting of Perry and Denise Martin, Taylor Made
Farm, and several prominent breeders, the 5-year-
old California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit has earnings
of $13,252,650 and will be in search of his sixth con-
secutive victory on Saturday.
"He doesn't mind traveling, that's for sure," said
assistant trainer Alan Sherman, following California
Chrome's 34-mile freeway trek from his home base at
Los Alamitos Race Course. "He'll jog tomorrow on the
main track and we'll go out with him at about 7 (a.m.)."
Fresh off a five-length score in the Pacific Classic
(gr. I) Aug. 20 at Del Mar, California Chrome began
his current five-race winning streak at Santa Anita
Jan. 9, with an impressive victory in the San Pasqual
Stakes (gr. II).
Tentative plans call for the chestnut horse to con-
clude his racing career by running in the $12 million
Pegasus World Cup (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park Jan. 28.
Following the Pegasus Wrold Cup, California
Chrome is expected to begin stud duty at Taylor
Made in Kentucky. BH

BENSON GETS FIRST CHURCHILL WIN AS TRAINERBy Blood-Horse Staff
Trainer Liam Benson, a 21-year-old student at
the University of Louisville's Equine Industry
Program, saddled his first Churchill Downs winner
in the Sept. 24 opener with Expected Ruler, who
also gave the trainer his first stakes victory in last
year's Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park.
"It was a lot of fun especially since we had a
lot of people over from U of L fill up the winner's
circle," Benson said. "The horse ran unbelievable.
I had a feeling that he was sitting on that race. It
was just a matter of getting the race to go and get-
ting a clean trip. (Jockey) Didiel (Osorio) gave him a
great ride."
The 3-year-old son of Leroidesanimaux entered
Saturday's race off a close fourth in Saratoga's
Quick Call Stakes on Aug. 4 where he was 1 3/4
lengths behind Holding Gold. His last victory came
at Keeneland in April against allowance company.
"It was definitely a confidence booster for him,"
Benson said. "I don't have the slightest idea what we're
going to do next. We're kind of limited with the whole
turf sprint thing. He might end up on the dirt at some
point going short. He's more likely to go short on the
dirt than long on the turf anytime soon. He's nominat-
ed to the ($150,000) Woodford Stakes gr. III, Oct. 8, at
Keeneland), but 14 days is a little tight for what I would
like. (Saturday's) race didn't take anything out of him
though. I gave him a little more than a full feed (Satur-
day) night and he devoured it." BH

NIGHTFLOWER WINS SUCCESSIVE EUROPABy Myra Lewyn
Jurgen Imm's homebred Nightflower captured the
Preis von Europa (Ger-I) for the second successive
year Sept. 25 at Cologne.
Andrasch Starke coaxed a powerful, sustained
rally through the final furlong from the 4-year-old
Dylan Thomas filly, who collared brief leader Red
Cardinal with 50 yards to run and edged past to win
by three-quarters of a length.
Nightflower landed last year's edition of the race by
a length from Sirius, who was never a factor this year,
finishing seventh of eight runners, while 2016 German
Oaks (Ger-I) victress Serienholde came in last.
Nightflower was timed in 2:29.30 for 2,400 meters
(about 1 1/2 miles) on turf rated good. Trained by Pe-
ter Schiergen, the filly's 14 starts are topped by three
wins, including the 2015 Diana-Trial (Ger-II), and sev-
en seconds, four of which came in group I company,
most notably two editions of Germany's top race, the
Grosser Preis von Baden, in 2015 behind Prince of
Gibraltar and Sept. 4 behind Iquitos.
Iquitos could have stamped himself as Germa-
ny's top middle-distance runner with a win Sunday,
but after a bump at the start and a collision with an
opponent, he raced at the back of the field and never
got into contention.
Three-year-old filly Kasalla made the lead early,
with David Simcock's British raider Red Cardinal chas-
ing the leader and Nightflower close up. Red Cardinal
bid for command 300 meters out, then switched to
the inside for a clear run and took charge 100 meters
out, but Nightflower came on too strong. Kasalla kept
on for third, just a short head back.
Nightflower was bred in Ireland by Imm's Stall Niz-
za. Her dam is 2009 Oaks d'Italia (Ity-II) winner Night
of Magic, by Peintre Celebre.
Elsewhere in Europe Sunday, Philippe Bellaiche's
Waikika landed her first top-level victory in the Pre-
mio Vittorio di Capua (Ity-I) at San Siro racecourse in
Milan, edging Charlie HIlls' British-based Jallota by a
neck.
Ridden by Gerald Mosse for trainer Yann Barber-
ot, French-bred Waikika covered 1,600 meters (about
one mile) in 1:34 on turf rated good after overhauling
pacesetter Kapersky nearing the final furlong. She
stayed on under pressure from Mosse and was al-
ways holding the runner-up. Kapersky held for third,
another three-quarter of a length back.
Five-year-old Waikika, a minor stakes winner in
France who was previously twice group III-placed at
Deauville, is by Whipper from the Green Tune mare
Fruhling Feuer. Barberot plucked her from the 2012 Ar-
qana October yearling sale for €15,000 ($19,535), where
Haras d'Etreham presented her as agent. She was bred
by Pontchartrain Stud and Revilo Park Stud. BH

ANALYSIS
TAPIT ON TRACK FOR THIRD EARNINGS RECORDBy Eric Mitchell
Gainesway's Tapit is on a solid track to set a
third consecutive, single-season progeny
earnings record.
The 15-year-old son of Pulpit—Tap Your
Heels, by Unbridled, is 10.7% ahead in Northern
Hemisphere total progeny earnings through
Sept. 22 than he was on the same date last year.
He has accumulated $16,160,742 so far this year
compared with the $14,601,523 in purses his
runners earned at this time a year ago.
Tapit first shattered the single-season record
for North American-based stallions in 2014
when his runners earned $18,650,956, which
was 28.8% more than the previous record of
$14,481,242 set by Smart Strike in 2007. Tapit
broke his own achievement handily in 2015
when his runners earned $19,132,708 in North-
ern Hemisphere races.
It should be noted that the total
earnings used in this analysis are up-
dated from when these single-sea-
son records were originally reported
because of delays in reporting of
results from various countries.
Tapit's earnings shortly after the end
of 2015 were just over $18.65 mil-
lion. Though the single-season bar
has been set a bit higher at $19.1
million, Tapit is on pace to exceed
$20 million in progeny earnings by
the end of the year.
By Sept. 22 in 2014 Tapit run-
ners accumulated 87.4% of the
total purse money they would
earn by end of the year. On the
same date in 2015 Tapit's progeny
earned 76.3% of their eventual
total earnings. Through Sept. 22
this year, Tapit's progeny earnings
are 81% of $20 million.
All earnings totals used here
are Northern Hemisphere-only earnings report-
ed to The Jockey Club Information Systems and
are derived from direct conversions from native
currency to U.S. dollars. Some differences will
be seen on BloodHorse sire lists, which adjust
earnings from Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore
because of the large disparity in purse value
relative to race quality. BH s Share this story
