The Whitney winner=s circle | Sarah Andrew

    Whitney cont. from p1

Ortiz continued, AHe was comfortable. By the backside, we felt

pressure but by his own he started picking it up. I let him do his

thing because they were going really slow so I let him go early.

When I asked him turning for home, he responded really well.

ABig race. Big race,@ said co-owner WinStar Farm=s Elliott

Walden. AObviously, we had to get over the gate [issues] a little

bit and Irad and the gate crew did a wonderful job. He broke

great, Irad had him in a super position and felt great all the way

around there. Bob had him ready to go, as usual, when he

comes East. When he got in the position that we had hoped for,

which was kind of tracking Mr. Buff, we felt really good. Then

they throw up kind of easy fractions. But, he's just a different

horse this year. That's his second Grade I in a row. He got beat

by Tom's d'Etat in his first start at Oaklawn, but he's set up for a

big year and we're just excited to continue that.@

As for the beaten favorite, Tom d=Etat, jockey Joel Rosario said,

"He stumbled coming out. There was a lot going on. He was

standing fine, he just missed the break. It changed my plan

because I had to really get riding from there. I couldn't take my

time. I thought the pace was fine. Even after that, I was not too

far from the lead. It looked like I was in a good spot. But

stumbling coming out of the gate, I lost ground right away."

A perfect three-for-three as a juvenile, including his first top-

level success in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity, Improbable faced

his first defeat when second in last term=s GII Rebel S. and filled

the same spot behind Omaha Beach (War Front) in the

GI Arkansas Derby last term. Fifth, but promoted to fourth as

the tepid favorite in the GI Kentucky Derby, the $200,000

KEESEP buy finished sixth in last year=s GI Preakness S., after

which he was given a brief freshening. Making a successful

comeback in the Shared Belief S. at Del Mar, he was fourth in

the GI Pennsylvania Derby in September and could only manage

fifth in the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile Nov. 2. Coming up just 3/4

of a length short of Tom=s d=Etat in the Oaklawn Mile Apr. 11,

Improbable flashed signs of his impressive juvenile form when

running off to a 3 1/4-length success in the GI Hollywood Gold

Cup S. going 10 panels in Arcadia June 6. Cont. p4

said. AIt's extremely significant winning the Allen Jerkens.

Ricardo [Santana] did a great job with him today. I think the

    Echo Town | Sarah Andrew

The Hall of Famer continued, AIt was great to see him put it all

together when it matters so much on this stage. He ran solidly

here. He ran really well into the Woody Stephens, but I thought

the timing of this race was better.@

AHe broke really sharp today and when the dirt started hitting

him in the face, he was jumping a little bit but he was really

comfortable,@ Santana said. AI took him outside and he gave me

a nice kick at the end. He was traveling really well. I knew there

was plenty of speed today and I just wanted to sit behind the

speed. I'm really happy with the horse.@

A debut winner at the Fair Grounds Jan. 18, Echo Town was

third next out at Oaklawn Feb. 23 and returned to winning ways

in the slop there Mar. 13. Missing by a head in the Bachelor S. in

Hot Springs Apr. 25, he captured a Churchill Downs sprint

May 25 prior to his effort in the Woody June 20 at Belmont.

    VEXATIOUS HOLDS OFF >BISOU= IN

PERSONAL ENSIGN Champion Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) was bet like shecould not lose Saturday=s GI Personal Ensign S. at 1-5, butapparently no one told 9-1 shotVexatious (Giant=s Causeway). The Calumet runner refused toyield to the Eclipse winner in thefinal furlong of the Saratogastretch to secure a spot in thestarting gate for the GI Breeders=Cup Distaff. Stakes winner Motion Emotion(Take Charge Indy) went straightto the front with Vexatiousstalking in a close-up second andMidnight Bisou just off of them inthird through opening splits of:24.15 and :48.36. Vexatiousdrew even with the pacesetterwith three-eighths left to run andthat rival called it quits as Midnight Bisou ranged up dangerouslyon the outside. The Eclipse winner was three-wide turning forhome with Vexatious just to her inside as Point of Honor (Curlin)snuck up the fence and looked ready to tussle with the top two.Vexatious came out a bit on the chalk in early stretch, but wasquickly righted by pilot Jose Lezcano. Point of Honor soonbacked out of it on the rail, leaving Vexatious and MidnightBisou to duke it out to the wire and that they did. The pairstormed clear of the rest of the field in a fierce battle to thefinish, but Vexatious was always going the better of the two andheld Midnight Bisou at bay for a neck success. There was astewards= inquiry into thestretch run, as well as a claim offoul by Midnight Bisou=s jockeyRicardo Santana, but the resultwas left as is. It was the firstGrade I victory and first win atSaratoga for trainer JackSisterson. AWe always thought she had abig win in her and all credit tothe filly,@ said Sisterson. AI wantto say thank you to [owner]Calumet Farm, and myemployees for getting her in thebest shape possible. We startedoff the year in allowance racesand allowed her to improve, andshe deserves it. It's a whole team effort and I have a lot ofpeople to thank.@

He continued, "We'll give her a well-deserved few days off and

let her jump ahead a bit. Obviously, it's a Win and You're In.=

We'll run her again before the Breeders' Cup and look forward

    to being home at Keeneland."

"I had a perfect trip,@ said Lezcano. AMy filly broke well. She

was relaxed the whole way and

just sitting behind the leader. I

    could feel the other filly

    [Midnight Bisou] coming and I

started asking my filly. Every time

the other filly came close to her,

my filly dug in. I showed her to

the other filly and she kept going.

She kept running. We could have

gone around one more time and I

still would have been in front

    with my filly."

    As for the beaten favorite

    Midnight Bisou, co-owner Jeff

Bloom said, AShe ran a huge race.

She barely lost the race. She's just

a remarkable race mare. I think what happened in the race

definitely caused a shift in momentum. Is it disappointing to

lose? Of course it is. You want to win all of them. They don't give

Grade I races away. You've got to go out there and do it. The filly

that beat us is a really nice filly. She ran a huge race last out and

is on the upswing, and that's what happens.@

Vexatious last visited the winner=s circle when promoted to

first via DQ in the 2018 GIII Dowager S. at Keeneland for Neil

Drysdale. Transferred to Sisterson last summer, she checked in

second in the track-and-trip Summer Colony S. And was off the

    board in the GI Juddmonte

Spinster S. next out. She kicked

off 2020 with a fifth in a tough

    Oaklawn optional claimer Apr.

30 and was third next out in a

turf test at Churchill June 6. The

    6-year-old was runner-up to

    another Eclipse winner in

    Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) in

    Belmont=s GII Ruffian S. July 11.

    Pedigree Notes:

Vexatious is the 35th Grade I

    winner for the late Giant=s

Causeway and is one of the 114

    graded winners and 192 stakes

COLLUSION ILLUSION BESTS HIS ELDERS IN

    BING CROSBY

Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy) got the better of his elders

and earned a spot in the gate for the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint,

holding off a late rally from Lexitonian (Speightstown) to take

Del Mar=s GI Bing Crosby S. Settling near the back of the pack,

the 9-5 chalk ran off the fence with only Lexitonian, who trailed

the field by several lengths, beat as the remaining five

scrambled for control through a sharp first quarter in :21.58.

Wildman Jack (Goldencents) gained a very narrow advantage as

the half went up in :44.73. Collusion Illusion wove his way

between horses at the top of the stretch, pushing through at the

fence to take control in the final sixteenth, and held off a

powerful late rally from Lexitonian to win by a nose.

A debut winner at this venue last July, Collusion Illusion

followed suit with a win in the GII Best Pal S. over track and trip

a month later. Pulled up and walked off when trying two turns in

the GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita last fall, he was

subsequently shelved for the reason and returned a winner in

an Arcadia sprint May 17. The $300,000 OBSAPR purchase

captured the GIII Laz Barrera S. last time at Santa Anita June 20.

    Pedigree Notes:

Candy and one of nine graded victors and 24 black-type scorers

    THOUSAND WORDS HANGS TOUGH IN

SHARED BELIEF Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) returned to winning

ways and improved his position on the GI Kentucky Derby trail

with a gutsy score in Del Mar=s Shared Belief S., which offered a

total of 50 points towards the Run for the Roses. Breaking

sharply from the inside post in this field scratched down to four,

the 9-1 shot had all three rivals hot on his tail through a :23.89

opening quarter. GI Santa Anita Derby hero and heavy favorite

Honor A. P. (Honor Code) was the first to break ranks, moving

up onto the pacesetter=s outside hip and was joined by $3.85-

million FTFMAR topper Cezanne (Curlin) to his inside as the half-

mile went up in :47.93. Cezanne drew even with his stablemate

Thousand Words turning for home and Honor A. P. joined in on

their outside. Thousand Words kept on finding in the stretch to

maintain a safe margin on his pricey barnmate all the way to the

line. Honor A. P. re-rallied in the final strides to be second,

finishing 3/4 of a length behind Thousand Words and a half-

length ahead of Cezanne. Cont. p10

In a dramatic, jostling, finish, it was favored Sadler=s Joy who

got to the line first, but his victory was short-lived as he was

disqualified for interference and veteran Cross Border was

promoted to his first graded victory in the GII Bowling Green S.

at Saratoga Saratoga Saturday. Cross Border settled in fourth as

his stablemate Marzo (Medaglia d=Oro) loped along out on a

loose lead in the marathon event. Marzo=s advantage quickly

evaporated heading into the stretch for the final time and he

was swallowed up by a host of rivals. Cross Border was tipped

out four wide into the lane and was shadowed by Sadler=s Joy

just to his outside. Sadler=s Joy was grinding his way to the front,

but drifted in slightly causing Cross Border over into the path of

Channel Maker. Sadler=s Joy straightened and strode clear, but

his victory was soon overturned by the stewards, who placed

    him fourth behind Channel Maker.

Jockey Javier Castellano, aboard the disqualified favorite, felt

    the infraction was minor.

AThis is just a gutsy New York-bred and it=s good for the game

that they can breed a New York-bred that can win a Grade II at

Saratoga,@ said Kirk Wycoff. AWe love the Bowling Green. We

were second in it three years ago with Bigger Picture. It was a

calculated risk to come back in 10 days and we weren't all in

agreement, but [trainer] Mike Maker made the decision and

obviously it was the right one.@

Of the quick turnaround, Maker said, AHe's got a high energy

level. He held his weight well. It was just a mere workout the

    other day.@

Three Diamonds was the leading buyer at this year=s Fasig July

sale, restocking its stable with nine purchases for $499,000.

Showing slightly more gate speed this time while back in the

blinkers she sported for her first two outings, Hopeful Growth

was in a bit tight into the first turn before settling into a pocket

trip. She was asked for more to keep position into the home

bend, and tipped wide for the stretch drive. Hopeful Growth

took over despite struggling with her leads, and found another

gear once she found her footing to run up the score late.

AHer last race was the first time she ran around two turns,@

said trainer Anthony Margotta, Jr. AWe were hoping to hit the

board there, but typically a horse going two turns for the first

time in our program may need a race around two turns the first

time. This was our bull=s eye target. I took the blinkers off her

last two races so she would learn a little. I put them back on so

she would focus more after she learned a little bit. She=s bred to

go long and she has trained that way the whole time so I knew

she would go longer. She has always wanted to stretch out. The

Delaware Oaks was a race we needed to get in before this one

for the two-turn experience and to learn. I loved the trip. She

was patient on the rail. That=s what we have been teaching her

to do and it paid off.@

TIZ THE LAW >PERFECT= IN SATURDAY DRILL

Sackatoga Stable=s Tiz the Law (Constitution) tuned up for next

Saturday=s GI Runhappy Travers S. with a five-furlong work in

    :59.44 (2/24) at Saratoga Saturday.

AI wanted to go in a minute and he went in a minute. It was

perfect,@ trainer Barclay Tagg said of the work. AWe couldn't

have worked better. He came back good and he was breathing

good. Everything was good. He's a gem to work with. He is doing

perfectly as far as I'm concerned. I don't know what else we can

do for him. I like this colt. Why wouldn't you? We've got a nice

    horse.@

Sent out at 5:30 a.m., Tiz the Law recorded splits of :23 4/5,

:36 and out in 1:13 2/5 over a fast main track with exercise rider

    Heather Smullen aboard.

AHe=s a little more relaxed in the morning,@ said Smullen. AHe=s

nice and professional and does his job. There is always adversity.

If he sees someone, he will get strong. He will get aggressive.

He's a racehorse. Luckily, there was no one out there today. He

went out there today and did what I told him to do. He was

strong and consistent. It sure seems like [he's ready for the

Travers]. He's done everything they have asked him to do.@

Tiz the Law has won all three of his starts this season, opening

his sophomore campaign with a win in the Feb. 1 GIII Holy Bull S.

before adding the Mar. 28 GI Curlin Florida Derby. He is coming

off a win in the June 20 GI Belmont S.

Sackatoga Stable will be seeking its second GI Kentucky Derby

win next month at Churchill Downs. The operation, headed by

Jack Knowlton, won the 2003 Derby with Funny Cide.

"I want to enjoy the next week because it is going to be a lot

of fun,@ Knowlton said. AWe will get to do a lot of things and we

will enjoy the moment at Saratoga. Hopefully, everything will

work out. We've got four weeks to hopefully win another

    Derby.

Knowlton continued, AIt=s exciting [to be here for the Travers].

My second biggest disappointment with the whole Funny Cide

run was not being able to even run in the Travers. When he got

sick, that was a bigger disappointment after not winning the

Triple Crown. Now, we've got a second chance. It's not often

you get second chances the way we have with this horse and to

do things that we couldn't do. We checked one box by winning

the Belmont. It would be wonderful to check this box to win the

Travers. I have a lot of confidence that he's going to get the mile

    and a quarter.@

Travers contenders Country Grammer (Tonalist), Shivaree

(Awesome of Course) and Caracaro (Uncle Mo) also breezed

over the main track at Saratoga Saturday, while possible Travers

entrant Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) breezed at Fair Hill Training

    Center in Elkton, Maryland.

Paul Pompa, Jr.=s Country Grammer worked four furlongs in

:47.66 (6/50) for trainer Chad Brown. The bay colt is coming off

a win in the July 16 GIII Peter Pan S.

Jacks or Better Farm=s Shivaree, trained by Ralph Nicks, went

five furlongs in 1:03.27 (24/24). The chestnut homebred was

second in the Florida Derby and is coming off an 11th-place

effort in the July 11 GII Toyota Blue Grass S.

AIt looked like he went well. He=s a tough horse and he handles

everything fine,@ said Nicks. AHe handled shipping up there fine.

He seems to be in good form. It was a nice maintenance breeze

on the bridle, just kind of cruising around there this morning, so

all is well. We decided last week to take a shot, and everything=s

    good.@

Global Thoroughbred and Top Racing's Peter Pan runner-up

Caracaro, trained by Gustavo Delgado, worked six furlongs

under Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano in 1:15.99 Saturday.

A maiden winner second time out at Gulfstream Park in

January, the bay colt was making just his third lifetime start in

    the Peter Pan.

AHe=s a good mover. Today, it wasn't about looking for time, it

was more like a two-minute lick starting from the three-quarters

and letting him gallop out,@ said Castellano. AHe just ran three

weeks ago, so today was a good maintenance work. He galloped

out beautiful past the wire, but I didn't let him overdo it. He

handled the track well. He did everything the right way today.@

Godolphin homebred Mystic Guide, a late-running third in the

Peter Pan for trainer Mike Stidham, added blinkers for his

five-eighths work in 1:01 flat (1/5) Saturday at Fair Hill.

AWe felt like he was a little more handy with the blinkers on,@

said Stidham. AHe broke off three lengths behind another horse.

We told the rider to stay even with the other horse down to the

wire and he galloped out well. He went out in :13 and change. I

was very happy with the addition of blinkers.@

Stidham said he is considering the colt for either the Travers or

the Sept. 5 GII Jim Dandy S.

    ART COLLECTOR HEADS CHURCHILL

    WORKERS

Bruce Lundsford=s Art Collector (Bernardini), winner of the GII

Toyota Blue Grass S. in his latest start, worked over a muddy

Churchill Downs track Saturday morning, going a half-mile in

:48.80 (3/18). Trained by Tom Drury, the colt carved out

fractions of :12.80 and :24.60 before galloping out five furlongs

in 1:01.20 and six panels in 1:14.80.

AIt=s so nice to have a horse who is versatile and can really run

over any surface,@ said Drury. AHe did everything very easily this

morning and it was really just a perfect work. We are still taking

things one day at a time. We just have to get there and we=re

    keeping our fingers crossed.@

Drury indicated the colt remains on course to make his next

start in Sunday=s Runhappy Ellis Park Derby ahead of a tilt at the

Sept. 5 GI Kentucky Derby. Also targeting Ellis=s Derby next

weekend, Jackie Rojas, Wayne Scherr and Raymond Daniels=s

Necker Island (Hard Spun) covered four furlongs in :47.80.

Other possible Kentucky Derby contenders that recorded

breezes Saturday were John Oxley=s GIII Lecomte S. winner

Enforceable (Tapit) (five furlongs in 1:02.60) and Lloyd Madison

Farm=s GIII Indiana Derby runner-up Major Fed (Ghostzapper)

    (four furlongs in :50.20).

AI was very happy with how [Enforceable] worked this

morning,@ said 21-year-old Declan Carroll, whose father, David,

oversees trainer Mark Casse=s Churchill Downs string. AHe did

everything in stride. I was just the pilot.@

Highlighting the fairer set Saturday morning, Peter Callahan=s

Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil) worked five furlongs in 1:01 in

preparation for the Aug. 15 GI Alabama S. at Saratoga. The

chestnut, who was runner-up behind Art Collector in the Blue

Grass last month, carved out intermediate fractions of :13.40,

:26.40 and :38.20 before rounding out the move in 1:14.20 for

six furlongs, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols.

AShe worked really good and handled the muddy surface well,@

Brian Hernandez Jr., who was aboard for the work. AShe=s a very

talented filly as we saw in the Blue Grass how well she handled

running against the boys. She cruised along out there this

    morning.@

Trained by Kenny McPeek, Swiss Skydiver, who is

automatically qualified for the Sept. 4 GI Kentucky Oaks with

350 points, annexed the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks, GIII Fantasy

    S. and GII Santa Anita Oaks earlier this spring.

DEL MAR BANS DESORMEAUX FROM RIDING Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux was taken off his mount

at Del Mar Friday by track management after an alleged

altercation earlier in the week. The story was originally reported

    by the Daily Racing Form.

Del Mar officials did not provide specifics on the alleged

incident, but Del Mar's Josh Rubinstein said, "Our action is not

related to racing, but rather is as a result of conduct not

consistent with our standards and values."

A California Horse Racing Board rule allows a racetrack to

remove or deny "access for any reason deemed appropriate by

the association." The CHRB's Mike Marten said, "The Del Mar

Thoroughbred Club has provided the California Horse Racing

Board with the information they relied upon. The CHRB is

conducting its own investigation to determine if there were any

rule violations that would require CHRB action with respect to

    Mr. Desormeaux=s license.:

Desormeaux's agent J.R. Pegram declined to comment.

FILLY=S DEATH AT BELMONT LEADS TO ARREST

According to a Newsday story, a 2-year-old filly let out of her

stall Thursday at Belmont Park by a former employee resulted in

a fall that led to the filly=s death. The former employee,

identified by the Nassau County Police Department as Ramzan

Antooa, 38, of Elmont, had been spotted at approximately 7:45

p.m. by Belmont=s security personnel releasing the filly. He was

arrested at the scene and charged with burglary and reckless

    endangerment of property.

Newsday quoted New York=s Gaming Commission=s database

as stating the horse A...ran loose and fell. Injuries sustained in fall

    subsequently necessitated euthanasia.@

Arraigned Friday at First District Court, Antooa was freed

without bail. The case is due back in court Sept. 21. Antooa=s

burglary charge is a felony, while the endangerment charge is a

    misdemeanor.

Patrick McKenna, New York Racing Association=s director of

communications and media relations, told Newsday the

deceased horse was a filly named Pasta (Fr) (Frankel {GB}).

There was an unraced filly by that name who last worked three

furlongs at Belmont July 26. The owner and trainer=s names

were not immediately available, but the filly had gone through

the Tattersalls October yearling sale last year as an 150,000gns

RNA. She was bred by Al Asayl Bloodstock Ltd.

ELLIS CANCELS FINAL FIVE RACES SATURDAY

Following the fourth race Saturday at Ellis Park, heavy rain

swept into Henderson, Ky., forcing the track to cancel the final

five races on the card. Rain the night before had already caused

Saturday=s turf races to be taken off the grass.

"In the best interest of safety for our jockeys and horses, we

are calling off the remainder of the Saturday racing program,"

said Ellis Park general manager Jeff Inman. "The rain is supposed

to let up this evening, and the forecast calls for beautiful

weather for Sunday's Kentucky Downs Preview Day."

Sunday=s card, which features five turf stakes for Kentucky

Downs Preview Day, is scheduled to be held as planned.

The Saratoga opener Saturday was one of those vintage events

in which virtually every firster was touted as a runner, and it was

Klaravich Stables, Inc.=s Reinvestment Risk (Upstart) who

emerged as the best of the bunch while becoming his freshman

sire (by Flatter)=s third winner and first >TDN Rising Star=. A

$140,000 FTKJUL yearling turned $280,000 OBS March

acquisition off a strong :20 4/5 breeze, the bay joined the Chad

Brown barn at Payson Park this spring before stints at

    Monmouth and, most recently, locally.

Off at 4-1, he broke in midpack and was pushed along by Irad

Ortiz, Jr. to grab a foothold at the rail just off the pace. Second

timer Windcracker (Super Saver) showed increased speed to

seize a clear lead through an opening quarter of :22.79, but he

left the rail open for Reinvestment Risk turning for home and

the colt came through willingly to take over after a :46.14 half.

The race was won at that point, and Reinvestment Risk poured it

on in the stretch to run up the score to 7 3/4 lengths and stop

the clock in1:09.95 after finishing up in a snappy :23.72.

Windcracker held on for second over Olympiad (Speightstown--

Tokyo Time), the seemingly less fancied half of a 7-5 entry with

eighth-place finisher Outlier (Not This Time).

Upstart was a 5 1/2-length debut winner at Saratoga himself

before adding the Funny Cide S. for New York-breds here nine

days later for owner Ralph Evans and the late Rick Violette,

Jr.--who at one point campaigned many of Klaravich=s most

precocious babies. Twice Grade I-placed to complete his juvenile

season, Upstart added the GII Fountain of Youth S. at three and

GIII Razorback H. at four before retiring to Airdrie Stud. In

addition to his three winners, Upstart is responsible to Belterra=s

    Hoover S. runner-up Uptown.

Reinvestment Risk was one of two Upstart colts purchased by

agent Mike Ryan at OBS March--he also bought $600,000

Founder, who is training towards his own debut up at the Spa,

for fellow Chad Brown clients Jeff Drown and Don Rachel.

Reinvestment Risk is the second foal out of a four-time winning

daughter of Candy Ride (Arg) who was acquired by breeder

Gerry Aschinger for just $6,000 at the 2016 Keeneland January

sale. Dam Ridingwiththedevil, who=s out of a half-sister to

MGSW My List (Banker=s Gold), produced a Strong Mandate filly

in 2019 and Stormy Atlantic colt earlier this term before being

    bred to Audible for 2021.

Cariba added to trainer Christophe Clement=s red-hot start to

card to be sired by a different Airdrie Stud stallion. Second by a

nose over 7 1/2 panels in her final start for the now retired

Kiaran McLaughlin at Gulfstream Mar. 7, Cariba was second in

an Apr. 19 optional claimer there going an additional sixteenth.

She successfully cut back to take a six-furlong, first-level

Belmont allowance June 28, and was flattered when the runner-

up from that heat returned to win well last weekend. Perched in

a good stalking spot in fourth early, Cariba advanced willingly

into the lane. She hit another gear when called upon for more

by Irad Ortiz, Jr. in midstretch, and ran down pacesetter Jakarta

in the shadow of the wire. It was also Ortiz=s fourth win on the

card--he piloted Improbable (City Zip) to victory in the GI

    Whitney S.

"This filly came from Kiaran McLaughlin, and Kiaran was very

helpful when she came to us in the winter,@ Clement noted. AShe

came in great shape, and she keeps getting better. She's got

black-type now. She belongs to a wonderful man, Everett

Dobson of Cheyenne Stables. He is an owner-breeder, so this is

very meaningful for him because down the line she is going to

be expected to be a broodmare. As usual, we are delighted. Irad

gave her a great ride, and life is good.@

El Tigre Terrible, winner of the Speakeasy S. over the Santa

Anita turf last October, doubled up on his stakes tally when he

powered home an easy winner Friday night at Del Mar. The bay

gelding was unhurried early and settled near the rear of the

field. He inched closer down the backstretch, but his progress

was stymied in traffic entering the far turn. Tipped out five wide

at the top of the lane, El Tigre Terrible surged to the lead with a

furlong to run and strode clear.

AHe broke just a bit slowly today, so he put himself in behind

the leaders and was comfortable there,@ said winning jockey

Flavien Prat. AWe had good pace to run at, so that was good.

When it came time for him to perform, he performed.@

El Tigre Terrible graduated versus $50,000 maiden claimers at

Del Mar last July and added an optional claimer win to his

resume two starts later before moving to the lawn to capture

the Oct. 6 Speakeasy. Sidelined for eight months after that

effort, he overcame trouble to be second in his return in the

June 6 Desert Code S. and was back on the main track and back

to sprinting Friday following another troubled trip when 11th

when stretched to one mile for the first time in the Oceanside S.

    last time out July 10.

AIt was very frustrating, he=s had two very bad trips the last

two races and I thought he was getting in trouble again here,@

said winning trainer Peter Miller. AHe had a horse to his outside

and it looked like he was running up on heels again. But Flavien

knew what he was doing and he was the best horse. I am very

nervous in those moments. He=s a hard-trying little horse with a
