TV TIME GREATER THAN OTHERS COMBINED A GfK research study reveals that time spent with traditional TV is 16% greater than time spent with all other media platforms combined. The study was commissioned by the TVB and comprehensive results will be presented at the Forward 2016 annual TV industry leadership conference September 29 in New York. Preliminary results from the “Media Comparisons 2016” research study shows that American consumers spend more time with television than all other ad-supported media platforms combined. The study also revealed that consumers overwhelmingly trust local broadcast TV news over any other source. The study compares ad-supported media platforms in terms of reach, influence, engagement, trust and time spent among important demographic groups. “While media proliferation continues, results from the Media Comparisons study again confirm television’s dominant position as a reliable, proven marketing solution that presents accountable, measurable advantages for brand managers, advertisers and political campaigns seeking to reach target audiences and influence decisions,” said TVB president and CEO Steve Lanzano. “Study findings show that adults 18+ spend nearly five hours a day with traditional television, or 16% more time than is spent on all other ad- supported media combined. In addition, local broadcast TV news remains the primary and most trusted resource for news and information, while social media received some of the lowest marks,” he added. Among other findings: Adults 18+ spend four hours and 54 minutes with television—compared to the next three highest categories: radio (62 minutes), e-mail (56 minutes) and social media (50 minutes). Local broadcast TV news serves as the primary TV news source for 22% of adults 18+, compared with network TV news (14%), cable news channels (13%). Broadcast news websites and apps serve as the primary news source for 10% of adults 18+, compared with all other Internet news (8%) and social media (7%). And when it comes to digital news, 68% of adults 18+ cited local broadcast TV news websites and apps as the most trusted source of information, compared to all other Internet news (48%) and social media (31%). FCC NIXES UHF OWNERSHIP DISCOUNT In a 3-2 vote along party lines, the Federal Communications Commission has eliminated the “UHF discount,” under which stations in the UHF band counted only half as much as VHF stations against the national ownership cap. The FCC’s three Democrats voted to scrap the discount as “outdated,” noting that UHF is actually the preferred band today, but grandfathered existing ownership exceeding the 39% national cap. Republican Michael O’Rielly dissented, saying only Congress had the authority to change the UHF Discount. Fellow GOP Commissioner Agit Pai blasted the majority move on numerous fronts, including their failure to simultaneously review the national cap. Noting the FCC’s recent slap-down by a federal appeals court for trying to make joint sales agreements (JSAs) attributable, Pai said the UHF Discount change is likewise arbitrary and capricious—and therefore unlawful. The National Association of Broadcasters also assailed the FCC for focusing on a single item without addressing reform of all of its broadcast ownership rules.

BIG CHANGES AT TEGNA Tegna announced plans to spin-off Cars.com into a separate, publicly traded company. And upon completion of the spin-off, expected in the first half of 2017, Tegna CEO Gracia Martore will retire from the company. The split into two companies will leave Tegna as the largest independent broadcast station group among major network affiliates in the top 25 markets, the company said. Tegna also owns a 53% stake in Careerbuilder.com and is “evaluating strategic alternatives” for that portion of its digital segment. The other owners are Tribune Media and The McClatchy Company. Upon Martore’s retirement, Dave Lougee, currently president of the TV group, will assume the role of CEO and president of Tegna. Alex Vetter will serve as CEO and president of Cars.com.

SYNDIE SNIPPET Live with Kelly appears to be in no hurry to announce a permanent co-host. Solo host Kelly Ripa announced “Live with Kelly and You,” a nation-wide search that will give one lucky viewer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: the chance to sit beside Ripa as guest co-host on Live for a day. To enter, viewers should send a video pitch detailing why they have what it takes to join Ripa on the show, as well as a short bio. After the entries are narrowed down by the Live production team, the viewing audience will vote to determine a group of 10 semi-finalists, from which the final five contenders will be selected. The five finalists will travel to New York City the week of October 17 to compete live on the show, and the lucky winner will join Ripa at the co-host desk on Friday, October 21. Live with Kelley is produced by WABC New York and syndicated by Disney|ABC.

Updating that story, a federal judge has now issued a ruling allowing Hanjin ships to dock at U.S. ports without fear of U.S. creditors seizing the cargoes, although it’s not yet clear if Hanjin could pay the workers needed to unload the ships. The Wall Street Journal says the cargoes include toys, tires, clothes and computers. HP, one of the affected shippers, said if the situation is not resolved soon it would be a “cataclysmic event for customers.”
