The Daily News of TV Sales Friday, May 10, 2019 EDISON: THEY’RE WATCHING 2+ HOURS PER DAY Moms, for all the things they’re juggling, still find an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes per day for television. Edison Research’s annual Moms and Media report shows that only the internet gets more of mom’s time each day, clocking in at two minutes shy of four hours. “The internet is showing its media dominance,” said Edison Research VP Melissa DeCesare during a webinar yesterday. “Moms are spending 24 more minutes daily with the internet in 2019 than 2018.” That comes into focus when their feet hit the floor each day. When asked which media they’re most likely to use first each morning, 55 percent of moms said the internet. Television was second at 23 percent, followed by radio at 18 percent. Speaking of mornings, Edison notes half of moms use an alarm clock to wake up, while 12 percent said someone wakes them up — a husband or kids. The prevailing theme in Edison’s report isn’t time spent with each media. It’s that moms are more tech savvy than many think. “Moms embrace new media and technology, and they blend it rather seamlessly into their existing routines and often create new habits and behaviors as a result, especially when it comes to mobile,” DeCesare said. Smartphones are nearly at universal status: 94 percent of moms own one. That’s up from 92 percent last year. “The smartphone maintains itself as the must-have among moms. They can text, consume media, shop and take care of all kinds of tedious tasks without missing a beat. And if you want proof that a mom won’t part with it, just watch what happens when a mom loses her phone,” said DeCesare. TV already targets mobile users, and for those targeting moms there’s good reason to put more effort into smart speakers, too. Edison says 34 percent of moms own a smart speaker, up from 6 percent two years ago. “This is a big one for moms. It has the potential to be a real game changer,” DeCesare said. “Smart speakers can do so much already, but as their functionality continues to expand further I think even more moms will embrace them and find ways to integrate that technology into the household.” Amazon is leading the race, with 25 percent of moms saying they have an Amazon-powered device, compared with 16 percent who have a Google Home unit. “Video streaming is another habit that is quite popular among moms,” DeCesare said. Edison reports 71 percent of moms surveyed have a Netflix subscription. And 67 percent had watched a Netflix show in the past week. A majority (56%) also has an Amazon Prime Video subscription — often through an Amazon Prime membership. But just 31 percent had (Continued on Page 3) REPORT: BUSY MOTHERS STILL FINDING TIME FOR TV ADVERTISER NEWS Walmart, the nation’s largest employer, pays its U.S. store managers an average of $175,000 a year, according to a new company report cited by USA Today. FOX SPORTS ATTACHES ITS BRAND TO BETTING Fox is planning to debut a legalized sports betting product in partnership with Canadian gambling company The Stars Group, marking the first time a large legacy media company is branding a betting product, CNBC reports. Fox Bet will launch in the fall of 2019, the company said in a statement. Initially, Fox will debut two products, a free-to-play game and a real money wagering platform in states with legalized gaming, which will rival companies such as FanDuel and DraftKings. Fox will invest $236 million in The Stars Group in exchange for about 5 percent equity in the company. As part of the deal, Fox Sports said it will grant an exclusive license to The Stars Group for the use of certain Fox Sports trademarks to online sports wagering. Prior to the 10th anniversary of the commercial agreement, Fox Sports has the right acquire up to a 50 percent equity stake in The Stars Group’s U.S. business. Sports gambling has been legalized in eight states. A total of 15 could legalize by the end of the year and 30 by next year, according to Patrick Keane, CEO of The Action Network, a research and analytics company dedicated to sports gambling.

NETWORK NEWS CBS has ordered a third season of military drama series SEAL Team. The network has also renewed S.W.A.T., Madam Secretary, Bull, Hawaii-Five-O and MacGyver, and magazine shows 60 Minutes and 48 Hours, bringing the total number of series renewed for next year to 18. Starring David Boreanaz, SEAL Team follows the professional and personal lives of the most elite unit of Navy SEALs as they train, plan and execute the most dangerous missions. Max Thieriot, Neil Brown Jr., AJ Buckley, Toni Trucks, Jessica Paré and Judd Lormand also star... Fox has made its first new series pickups, ordering four of its six drama pilots to series. That includes cop/serial killer drama Prodigal Son, starring Tom Payne and Michael Sheen; John Slattery’s AI drama neXt; police drama Deputy, headlined by Stephen Dorff; and the Annie Weisman/Jason Katims sister drama based on an Australian format. The drama competition at Fox had been fierce from the start, with five of the six pilots emerging as solid contenders. The fifth in the group, soapy family drama Filthy Rich, headlined by Kim Cattrall, considered a suitable companion to Empire, remains in contention. Fox has also picked up to series live-action family comedy Outmatched (fka Geniuses), and the animated comedy The Great North... Fox executives told an audience of analysts at its Investor Day meeting yesterday what they had been waiting to hear for months: With its focus on live news and sports, the newly broadcast-centric company will use that clout to extract higher retransmission consent fees from pay TV operators, Multichannel News reports. Fox, which after the sale of certain cable assets to Disney in March left it with the Fox broadcast network, 28 owned and operated TV stations and several cable channels, is calling its newfound focus “The Power of Now.” Pay TV operators have long expected the company to use that clout to raise retrans rates. Just how much of an increase wasn’t revealed... CBS and CBS Sports Network will televise 20 Big East Conference men’s regular-season basketball games per year through the 2024-25 season in a new sublicense deal with Fox Sports. The pact includes at least two appearances for each of the 10 Big East schools... Jeff Glor, who has been the face of the CBS Evening News since late 2017, has told staff he will step down as anchor of the evening newscast after tonight’s program, three people familiar with the matter tell Variety. Norah O’Donnell won’t take over until this summer. Glor is currently in discussions about taking a new role at CBS News... Telemundo has unveiled its latest slate of 900 hours of original content, including a new drug lord drama starring Majida Issa and Mark Tacher. The network is launching a slew of new shows and renewals, including an update on its adaptation of gameshow The Wall. Operación Pacífico is the broadcaster’s latest Super Series, a slate of action-orientated telenovelas that have reinvented the genre with shorter runs. The show is inspired by the true story of federal agent Amalia Ortega. It has also renewed El Señor de los Cielos for a seventh season and is launching limited series No Te Puedes Esconder. In reality, it is “recharging” shows including The Voice (La Voz) and Exatlon as well as premiering The Wall.

REPORT: BUSY MOMS STILL FIND TIME FOR TV(Continued from Page 1)actually watched a show on Amazon. There’s less of a gap with Hulu: 30 percent had a subscription, and 29 percent watched a Hulu show in the past week. As overall use of Facebook has slipped during the past year, moms remain loyal. “Facebook is doing just fine among moms,” DeCesare said. “The percentage of moms currently using Facebook is at a very healthy 81 percent. In fact, mom’s Facebook usage has rebounded this year, coming in higher than we saw in 2018.”

She says that’s likely because lots of schools and activities that kids are involved in only communicate with parents through Facebook. Yet there are cracks showing. The number of moms who said they used Facebook more than any other form of social media dropped five points from last year. Even so, 64 percent of moms said Facebook still gets most of their social media time. Interest in Pinterest keeps growing, with nearly two-thirds of moms this year

saying they use the site. Instagram is growing too, with a majority saying they’re on the photo sharing site too.

FRIDAY NIELSEN RATINGS - LIVE + SAME DAY

TEGNA GETS Q1 LIFT FROM STRONG SUBS Tegna’s “productive” first-quarter growth was highlighted by its “continued strength” in subscription revenue and its acquisition of 11 TV stations in eight markets from Nexstar Media Group that included eight Big Four affiliates, David Lougee, Tegna president and CEO, said yesterday on an earnings call, TVNewsCheck reports. Tegna’s Q1 revenue grew 3 percent year-over-year to $517 million although, excluding political and estimated incremental Olympics and Super Bowl revenue, revenue came in at the high end of its guidance, increasing 8 percent. The revenue growth was “driven primarily by” subscription revenue growing 18 percent to $242 million that Lougee said was a “first quarter record,” along with growth in Tegna’s sales, digital and content operations. The company’s $740 million cash purchase of 11 stations from Nexstar, announced in March, was “the largest acquisition since we became a pure-play” media company in June 2017, Lougee noted. Since that purchase, the company also announced its acquisition of the 85 percent of multicast networks Justice and Quest that Tegna didn’t already own.

WSJ: ECONOMISTS SEE FASTER WAGE GROWTH U.S. wage growth is set to pick up over the next year, as economists expect a tight labor market will continue to push up workers’ pay. Most private-sector forecasters surveyed in recent days by The Wall Street Journal — 63.6 percent — expect wages will grow at a somewhat faster rate over the next year, while a further 5.5 percent of economists said wages will grow at a substantially faster rate. “We continue to hear from manufacturers about how difficult it is to attract talent in the tight labor market, a challenge that we do not see changing in the near future,” said Chad Moutray, chief economist at the National Association of Manufacturers. Just under a quarter of economists, 23.6 percent, expect wages to grow at the same 3.2 percent year-over-year pace seen in April. Just 7.3 percent expect the pace will slow over the next year.

THIS AND THAT Roku’s stock price jumped 28 percent yesterday to close at a record of $83.17, a day after the company reported stellar Q1 results. Retrans was the chief contributor to Nexstar’s top line in the first quarter, accounting for just over half the company’s total $626.6 milllion in revenue. That reflects continued strong retrans growth, up 13.8 percent in the quarter. Spot and digital, both down the in quarter, account for 40.4 percent and 8.4 percent of total revenue, respectively... Conroy Media, a boutique advertising media buying agency headquartered in suburban Chicago, has entered into a multi-year agreement with Nielsen for Local TV and Audio electronic ratings services in multiple markets across the U.S., the companies said in a news release.
