NEW PARISHIONERS – Welcome! There are registration forms on the resource tables in the foyers of our two churches. Just fill one out and drop it in the collection basket or return it to the parish office. You may also register by calling the parish office during weekday business hours.

YOUNG FAMILIES – At St. Philip Church, the quiet room is available for families with young children attending Mass, and at St. Catherine Church the foyer is available if your child needs a break.

PARISHIONERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS - The first pew in both of our churches is available for parishioners that have any type of physical limitations, and you may also receive communion while staying in your seat if you’d like. At St. Philip, those in the quiet room may proceed in front of the first pew for communion as well.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK - can be celebrated at any time for those who are ill or infirmed. When someone’s condition worsens, please call the parish office to arrange for Fr. Stu to visit and celebrate the sacrament rather then waiting until the final moments of their life.

The Pastor’s Desk Last week I gathered with priests of “Deanery 2” for our first meeting since the beginning of the pandemic. Well, we didn’t meet in person; instead it was a Zoom meeting, with each of us attending via the internet, represented by a block portrait in the upper part of the screen, taking center stage when we had something to say. This regional contingent repre-sents all the priests from West Simsbury to Manchester, En-field to Bloomfield. It’s a chance for us to talk and listen, share and pray as we carry out our daily ministries to God’s people in the North-Central part of the state. It was particular-ly needed as we’ve each tried to stay connected with our parish communities in all the creative ways we could these 3 months, especially now that Masses have started up again throughout the diocese. Guys talked about the challenges and blessings they’ve experienced and the ways we’ve been trying to make our wor-ship spaces safe and spirit-filled recently. For me, it’s seemed like we’ve lived a year in 90 days: Lent was cut in half, no Holy Week feasts, the Easter season flew by, the Faith For-mation ministry was completed remotely, and all of a sudden, summer is here. But in the midst of it all, here in our parish we’ve had good things to remember. The church bells chimed at 8pm to remind us of the marks of Christ’s cross in the pain and suffering of COVID. We formed house churches during Lent & Holy Week through prayer, scripture and our own home-style Tridu-um rituals. The cards of solidarity that made their way through the mail showed our bond as a community of faith. The devot-ed stewardship of those who could were signs of commitment to our parish each month, with envelopes sent to the parish office, gifts given online, and other treasure offerings dropped off in the message box of the entranceway. Generous gestures helping us hold our own, tending to our parish needs as we stayed connected in spirit, sharing ourselves and reaching out to others. And these caring ways continued when worship began a few weeks back. Small groups have come together slowly, cautiously to praise the Lord together. They entered through the front, side doors, checked out the new Giving Boxes, saw that the church was sparkling clean, with extra face-coverings and hand sanitizer on the tables, pews marked, and small post-ers with welcoming messages and helpful words hung about. We kept socially distanced with faces covered a bit but hearts open, joined in faith and a sense of gratitude to meet our Lord again in each other and his Bread of Life. These “reopening” steps will continue when we begin July with our new Mass schedule at St. Philip: the three weekend Masses from before and two other times from our recent week-day worship. Again, it will be gradual as we tell others that it was okay, we felt safe, we looked out for each other. For pro-tection, we won’t be able to sing out – which we’re so good at here at SMC! But we can sing quietly in our hearts and listen to Wendy and Mary feed us with their musical gifts. We’ll need to tend to tasks specific to this time, inviting those who can to lend a hand welcoming folks when they arrive and pre-paring the worship space afterwards for the next Mass. New chores needed now so that a sense of ease and safety can mark our time together and help the Lord move near as we form fresh memories and build parish in different ways, carefully, faithfully, together in Christ.

“Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.”

New Mass Ministries The past few weeks have been a learning experience as we gathered together at weekday Masses in our parish at St. Philip Church. Folks have been greeted as they’ve arrived through the front side doors and helped with any questions they might have. After Mass, we’ve also been tending to the tidiness of the church, making sure everything is spic-n-span and safe for those who gather next. As our new weekly Mass schedule begins the weekend of July 4 & 5, the church will be used more and we’ll need additional mem-bers of our community to foster a spirit of welcome and safety for all. Two new ministries will be created to help this happen during the weekend Masses and a schedule will be provided for each member.

Greeter Team – This ministry will be about helping folks feel welcomed and informed as they enter the main foyer of the church. Ministry members will answer questions and point out items of interest (such as the Giving Boxes, safety items, and where to proceed to be seated). Using a hand-counter, a tally will also be kept of how many folks gather at each Mass. Team members will be asked to arrive 15 minutes be-fore Mass as they greet and remind folks of our safe practices, help-ing everyone feel at ease as we worship together.

Set-up Team – In an effort to maintain a safe, tidy setting when we come together, this ministry will make sure everything is clean and set-up for the next Mass. Team members will gather in the sacristy through the left-side door to take up their cleaning supplies and safety items in order to wipe down the tops of the pews, door handles, push-pads & bars and any other areas that need tending. Used towels and latex gloves can then be dropped off in marked bins in the sacristy when finished. Also, the tables and shelves in the church foyers will be checked for adequate supplies of face-coverings and hand sanitizer. The time needed to carry out this ministry is about 20 minutes after Mass.

If you’d like to join me and help out in these important ministries, please sign-up on the resource tables/shelves or call the parish office (860-623-4636).

Many thanks,

Fr. Stu

A Note of Thanks

Dear Friends of Enfield Loaves & Fishes:

Thank you for your very generous monthly donations of delicious sandwiches over the past few months. Your assistance helps us feed the ever-increasing number of hungry people in Enfield and the surrounding area. We are continuing to feed those in need during the current health crisis by serving bagged meals-to-go outside of the soup kitchen for home consumption. The number of guests be-ing fed has more than doubled during the past weeks and your gen-erous support makes it possible for us to continue our mission.

Thank you again for thinking of us and sharing with the needy. We truly appreciate your kindness.

Gratefully,

Priscilla Brayson

Director

New Mass Schedule at SMC

Our new weekly Mass schedule starts the beginning of July, with three weekend Masses and two weekday Masses. This is a gradual process, mindful of the pandemic and the need to be thoughtful and caring for others. To help this happen, due to its size and other features, and the need for cleaning after each Mass, St. Philip’s will be the parish church used for all Masses for the foreseeable future until a vaccine is created and available to all. Another consideration is the number of people who will be able to safely gather at one time in the church. Based on the guidelines set by the diocese, no more than 100 persons can be present at a given Mass. When we come together, we’ll do so attentive to social distancing and the need for quiet time afterwards so the church can settle and be kept safe. Everyone is invited to choose a Mass as your sabbath time with the Lord. It may be a weekend liturgy, when more people will be gathered together, or one of the weekday Masses which will be smaller and a bit more quiet. As time goes on we’ll evaluate how our weekend Mass attendance is progressing, and if needed, we may ask everyone to let us know which Mass they plan to attend on a given weekend by calling the parish office or going online to the parish website. Until then, you need not call ahead of time for the foreseeable future.

This will be our weekly Mass schedule beginning July 4 & 5:

Weekend Masses - Saturday at 4:00pm & Sunday at 8:30 & 10:30am

Weekday Masses - Tuesday at 12:10pm & Thursday at 8:00am

Here are some other helpful practices as we join in worship.

Entering/Departing Church – Everyone will be asked to wear a face covering. Enter through one of the two side doors in the main foyer so you can be greeted and helped as needed. Then walk down the sloping aisles to pick out a marked row to sit in. At the end of Mass, all will leave, 6ft apart, one row at a time, down the side aisles and out the side foyer doors. Seating & Social Distancing - Seating will be in every other row with no more than 4 in each pew (such as: 3 singles; or 1 couple and 2 singles; or 1 family of 3 and 1 single; or just 1 family of 4+). Rows to sit in will be marked at the end of each pew with a colored sheet of paper. Giving Boxes/Baskets – There will be no passing of the collection baskets during Mass since we need to abide by social distancing and hand safety. Instead, marked Giving Boxes can be found in the wooden wall shelves as you enter. There’s also two wicker Giving Baskets on the carpet near the sanctuary as you depart. Both the Giving Boxes & Baskets enable us to take care of our stewardship offerings on our own at Mass while mailing them in or using Online Giving if needed. Communion Time – Ministers of the Eucharist will wear face coverings and hand-sanitize before serving at communion. Those who would like to receive communion can come up wearing face coverings, one row at a time, 6ft. apart. Communion will be received in the hands, flat and extended towards the minister, mindful of the red marker strips in the carpet. After receiving the host, each person is asked to step six feet to the side, lower your face covering, consume the host, replace the covering, and return to your seat. We’ll continue to get used to things together as the Lord helps us along the way, feeling safe as we worship our God together.
