Practicing the Presence of God: What is Spiritual Communion?
THE PASTOR’S CORNER by Rev. Rees Doughty
ome time around the year 742 BC, a young man named Isaiah prayed in the holy Temple in Jerusalem. At the time the Assyrian Empire
with its succession of kings was intent on conquering the world and Israel was faced with the loss of everything, including their worship. In the book bearing his name and prophecies, Isaiah tells how the Lord had first called him to bear witness to God’s love for - and disappointment in - his people (cf. Isaiah 6:1-13). It happened perhaps at the hour when the priests had burned incense as an expression of Israel’s hope that their prayers would rise to God (and in a remembrance of how they beheld Him when led through the desert). Through the smoke, Isaiah could see an awesome vision: the Lord seated “on a high and lofty throne, with his garment filling the temple.” There were angels, seraphim, each with six wings above him. They were singing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory.” The ark of the covenant before which Isaiah prayed, with its effigies of angels forming its lid, appeared to be God’s footstool and the heavens His throne. At that time in Israel’s history, the cult of adoration became very localized in Jerusalem and in the Temple specifically. This meant that the people of Israel were sorely tempted to jump the fence and worship the idols of the pagan peoples who shared the Holy Land with them. The Lord’s message through Isaiah was, in so many words, “I am never away from you! I’m a lot bigger than you think!” Thankfully, his omnipresence (presence everywhere) seems to be acknowledged today by all believers and the present COVID19 crisis does not diminish our faith. The Church’s pastors have suggested, in the absence of Mass, a spiritual communion. By this simple practice, the faithful person asks that time spent in private prayer—whether watching Mass prayerfully on television or the internet, or reading scripture piously, or however else one may turn to God—would bring the same spiritual
benefit that receiving communion would give. For St. Thomas Aquinas spiritual communion was nothing more than, and nothing less than, “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament and a loving embrace as though we had already received him.” Of this practice, St. John Paul II encouraged the practice in his encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia:
The practice of “spiritual communion…” has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. St. Teresa of Jesus wrote: “When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.”
In truth, the prayer of the Mass is about communion with Jesus and therefore with his Father in Heaven through the Holy Spirit. That communion implies relationship, which implies friendship, friendship with God himself. Sadly, even when there were so many opportunities to enter into an abiding relationship with the Lord through the Eucharist, there are all too many occasions when we become oppressed by our “obligation” or uninspired or impatient and fail to enjoy its spiritual fruits. Father Walter Ciszek, an American Jesuit, arrested by the Russians on the eve of World War II for being a “Vatican spy,” sentenced to the Gulag in Siberia until 1955, and able to celebrate Mass and receive communion rarely and always secretly, said it was “the source of my strength and spiritual sustenance.” (From He Leadeth Me, p. 191). When he was freed and returned home, he wondered: “Sometimes I think that those who have never been deprived of an opportunity to say or hear Mass do not really appreciate what a treasure the Mass is” (He Leadeth Me, pg. 122). Perhaps this moment and the practice of the presence of God in spiritual communion will lead us to a more wonderful experience of faith in our lives?

The Archdiocese of New York has directed that palms NOT be distributed on Palm Sunday. Palms will be made available after this crisis has ended.
—————————— A note from Father Doughty about parish nances: Many parishioners have inquired how they can continue to support the parish. Naturally, the parish relies on your weekly o ering to pay salaries and bills. May I encourage those who are not already giving electronically to consider donating to the parish by going to our website and choosing the ParishSoft Giving option. O erings can be made on a one-time or recurring basis or you may register for an account to have donations automatically sent to the parish. If you give through envelopes, please send them via U.S. Mail to our address (340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520) or when you stop by to say prayers drop them o in the large donation box at the parking lot entrance to St. Thomas Church (open daily 9 am-5 pm). We are grateful for your spiritual and nancial support within your means. May God continue to
bless the parishioners of St. Marianne Cope Parish. ——————————

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. This is a serious matter within Church law.
- FFASTING means only one full meal a day may be taken. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain physical strength
but together they should not equal another full meal in quantity. Snacking between meals is not permitted. Catholics
ages 18-59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are not specifically obliged to fast are
encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent they are able.
- AABSTINENCE forbids the eating of meat or poultry. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged to abstain on
Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent and continue to oblige throughout their lives. Those who are not specifically
obliged to abstain from eating meat are urged to join in the discipline of abstaining to the extent that they are able.
- Remember AALL FRIDAYS OF THE YEAR are designated as days of penance during which we are encouraged to practice
self-denial out of gratitude for the suffering and death Jesus accepted for us.
