ST. MARIANNE COPE PARISH Roman Catholic Churches of St. Thomas of Canterbury and St. Joseph
First Sunday of Advent - November 29, 2020
The last day to contribute to Coats for Kids is November 29th. We greatly appreciate your generosity to this cause. Last year, Knights of Columbus Council 7460 distributed 50 new winter coats to local children in need as part of their Coats for Kids initiative. Through the national Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids program, 1,780 Knights of Columbus Councils distributed thousands of coats to children in need throughout the United States. If you haven’t yet made your contribution, please send your check today for $20 (made payable to “Knights of Columbus 7460”) and write “Coats for Kids” in the memo line to: Steve Accilli, 96 Main Street, Cornwall, NY 12518 or place it in the Collection Box at St. Thomas Church.
—————————— St. Thomas Cemetery will be participating again in Wreaths Across America Day. The community will be laying wreaths on all of the Veterans' graves at St. Thomas Cemetery on Saturday, December 19th at noon. All of the wreaths for the Veterans who have markers on their graves have been sponsored. No additional donations are needed. If you know of a Veteran at the Cemetery without a marker, call Lisa at (845) 245-5304 so a wreath can be provided.
—————————— For information about Faith Formation Classes, contact Faith Formation Director Mary Ellen Tiernan ((845) 534-2547 (option 2) or [email protected]). The new email for the Faith Formation O ce is faithformation@ stmariannecope.com. All classes continue to be held virtually.
—————————— The Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Rita #264 extends an invitation to our parish to participate in the Spiritual Adoption Program begun by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. More than 4,000 babies are aborted each day. Please sign up to spiritually adopt a child endangered by abortion. Your only obligation is to pray for her/him and all the unborn. More details are at stmariannecope.com under the “Ministries/Catholic Daughters” tab. The program will begin January 1, 2021.
—————————— Reminders for Mass: Masks are essential, social distancing is a must, and hand-sanitizers are highly recommended. ~ Sign-up for weekend Masses: Information on Mass sign-ups is sent by Flocknote each week and the link is posted on the website. Signing up does not “reserve” seats for those attending unless they arrive early. We may not be able to seat latecomers once Mass has begun. For those with health concerns, the Sunday obligation continues to be waived. ~ Worship Aid: The readings, prayers, and music for Mass are available on the website under the Parish Life tab. Download and print it or view it on your smartphone. ~ The Bulletin is posted on the website each week and there are paper copies in the church. ~ Mass at St. Thomas Church is live streamed at 10 am on Sundays at stmariannecope.com and YouTube.

THE PASTOR’S CORNER
REMEMBERING LOVE
N ext to the account of
Jesus’ birth in
Bethlehem in humble circumstances
there are not many stories as popular
as A Christmas Carol by Charles
Dickens. We are all familiar with the
tale, whether we have actually read it
or have seen one of the innumerable
movie or television adaptations. My
rst recollection of A Christmas Carol
was in watching Mr. Magoo play the
part of Ebenezer Scrooge. My
favorite: the 1951 lm with Alastair
Sim. I can only imagine what the
Hallmark Channel’s Christmas
Countdown “A Christmas Carol in
Nashville” is about. I think I’ll avoid
it. None compares with the depth
and beauty of Dickens’ actual words.
A Christmas Carol is a wonderful
story that teaches about a man,
enamored of worldly gain, who has
forgotten how to love. With a heart
grown cold and mean, no recollection
of any love from the past remains
within him. He is given one more
chance, however, to change his ways
when three ghosts – of Christmas –
force him to reexamine his memory,
to see the present as it truly is, and
ponder his future in the light of the
One Love which came to us when he
was born of the Virgin Mary so many
years ago.
Through the season of Advent, the
Church calls us to prepare ourselves
for a similar remembering. We see all
our love in the light of that One Love.
This act of remembering reminds us
that through, with, and in that One
Love, all our loves triumph over sin
and su ering, evil and even death, to
live forever.
The priests and deacons of St.
Marianne Cope parish pray that this
Advent will be fruitful for you, so that
the love of God in Jesus His Son will
come to rest in your homes in a new
and more meaningful way this
Christmas.
The offering for an announced intention is $15. The Sunday Mass at noon will ALWAYS be offered only for the People of the Parish. Contact the Of ce for available 2020 and 2021 Masses for intentions.
Reading I: Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7. The prophet quotes a psalmist who cries out like a despairing man, and implores God’s intervention. He admits that God has abandoned the sinner to his guilt. Reading II: I Corinthians 1:3-9. Paul declares himself to be an authentic apostle by virtue of his calling. Using his regular salutation signi es God’s goodness and His many gifts. He thanks God especially for His gifts to the Corinthian community. The Gospel: Mark 13:33-37. “Not knowing the day nor the hour” is Mark’s reason for exhorting vigilance. Jesus expands His meaning to go past the pending destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple to include all Jews and Jewish Christians.
