FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT - MARCH 29, 2020

Making Our Faith Stronger (despite reasons to not believe)

THE PASTOR’S CORNER by Rev. Rees Doughty

Reading I: Ezekiel 37:12-14 The prophet’s message clearly is to his people in exile. He preaches on the hope- lled word of God to uplift them with the promise of new life, only because they have been spiritually dead. This will happen through God’s own Spirit.

Reading II: Romans 8:8-11 The Holy Spirit is the true power-giving life for the Christian here on earth. Later this same Spirit will enable him or her to rise up from death.

The Gospel: John 11:1-45, or 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 3-45 Jesus works His greatest of the seven “signs” by His giving of the gift of life. Having received this awesome power from His Father, He calls forth Lazarus. The evangelist provides us with all the surrounding circumstances we need to bolster our belief in the miracle.

hen in the late 6th century B.C., the Babylonians led by King Nebuchadnezzar conquered the Kingdom of Judah, a deep

wound left its mark upon the collective consciousness of the people who called themselves the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Political leaders, priests and Levites, soldiers and trades people - all but the few who were left to keep the city in fiefdom to Nebuchadnezzar - were exiled in bondage to Babylon. Weighing heavily upon every mind was the thought that God had abandoned them. The Temple of Jerusalem had been destroyed by the invading army and all the sacred objects sent to the treasuries of their enemy. The Temple was the place of God’s holy Presence, where the encounter with their Heavenly Father was real. Without the sacrifices that allowed them to enter into that Presence, without the offering of incense that expressed the human heart’s desire for converse with the divine, deprived of worship, their once inviolable faith and confidence in the covenant with the Lord was shattered.

By the rivers of Babylon there we sat weeping

when we remembered Zion…. How could we sing a song of the Lord

in a foreign land? (Psalm 137) Astonishingly, their faith proved more powerful than what they had suffered. The years of exile spurred an intense religious undertaking. Once dispersed scriptural writings from the Torah were gathered together and pondered for a deeper understanding of the Lord’s will. The prophecies of Ezekiel, one of their fellow exiles, spoke of a resurrection for the nation and a return to its

homeland. It’s possible that the practice of worship in a synagogue, of the kind to which Jesus was accustomed, began there (see Luke 4:15-22; John 6: 53-59). In every age, God’s people find challenges to their faith. In these days, when the human right to assemble freely for worship is frustrated by sensible guidelines enacted for the common good, the human need for converse with the Lord is even more insistent. If meeting God in His Presence is not at the moment possible in the means which are a habit for us, it is certain we are invited to a depth of experience “apart from His Presence.” Just as the Jews in exile longed for a return to Jerusalem and worship in the Temple, perhaps our “abstinence” will obtain for us a great hunger for the Bread of Life when we are able to gather together again. Pray then! Pray deeply and often! Ask to meditate on scripture and enter in conversation with Jesus with the asked for help of the Holy Spirit! Ask the Lord for such a yearning for the Sacrament that the reality of communion with him through his Body and Blood will no longer seem humdrum or repetitive but a new experience of his love and mercy! Ask for the grace of a spiritual communion by which the fruits of the sacrament are given to us regardless!

My Jesus, I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

W

A note from Father Doughty about parish nances: Many parishioners have inquired how they can continue to support the parish. Naturally, the parish relies on your weekly o ering to pay salaries and bills. May I encourage those who are not already giving electronically, to consider donating to the parish by going to our website and choosing the ParishSoft Giving option. O erings can be made on a one-time or recurring basis or you may register for an account to have donations automatically sent to the parish. If you give through envelopes, please send them via U.S. Mail to our address or drop them o in the large donation box at the parking lot entrance to St. Thomas Church when you can stop by to say prayers, 9 am-5 pm. We are grateful for your spiritual and nancial support within your means. May God continue to bless the parishioners of St. Marianne Cope Parish.

G U I D E L I N E S F O R F A S T I N G A N D A B S T I N E N C E :

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. This is a serious matter within Church law.

- FFASTING means only one full meal a day may be taken. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain physical strength

but together they should not equal another full meal in quantity. Snacking between meals is not permitted. Catholics

ages 18-59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Those who are not specifically obliged to fast are

encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent they are able.

- AABSTINENCE forbids the eating of meat or poultry. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged to abstain on

Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent and continue to oblige throughout their lives. Those who are not specifically

obliged to abstain from eating meat are urged to join in the discipline of abstaining to the extent that they are able.

- Remember AALL FRIDAYS OF THE YEAR are designated as days of penance during which we are encouraged to practice

self-denial out of gratitude for the suffering and death Jesus accepted for us.

All Masses scheduled at the Parish, until the Archdiocese allows

the resumption of public Masses, will be said privately

to ful ll the intentions of those Masses.
