Year 11 Assessment: Mocks
Monday, 19th – Tuesday, 27th January 2015
Dear parents/carers
Please see the attached mock assessment tasks and timetable for your son/daughter. I would ask that you place this
in a prominent position in the house (the fridge is good, for obvious reasons). It is vital that students revise
adequately for these examinations, as the results will help us to place them in the right tiers of entry for the summer
exams and also inform any further intervention. Use the list below to help students plan their revision. Short
reports will be given out in time for feedback at the Consultation Evening on Thursday, 12th February 2015.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Year Mr Ross

December 2014 To the parents of year 8 children in the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Dear Parents, I am writing to you because your child is now at the age to begin preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation. Like Baptism and the Eucharist, Confirmation is one of the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church. It is sought as part of the response in faith to the personal call of Christ, and is a way of deepening a person’s participation in the life and worship of the Church. It is therefore a step to which you and your child should give careful consideration before requesting to join the preparation programme. The age at which Confirmation is received in this parish means that the children themselves should be fully involved in this decision, but in order to fulfil the commitment they make they will still need the active support of their parents.
I would therefore ask you to discuss this with your child and think seriously about whether you are all prepared to make the necessary commitment. Your child is asked to write a letter of application to the parish priest briefly saying why he or she now feels ready to prepare for Confirmation and how they intend to live out their faith commitment. You, as parents, are asked to support your child by ensuring that as a family you attend Sunday Mass every week, and in addition we ask you to encourage them by taking an interest in their coursework, and ensure that it is completed with care and on time. Most important however, is the example of your own life and the way in which you foster an attitude of faith and prayer within the home and family. The parish will do all that we can to support you and your child during this important time, but the Church emphasises that the right and the responsibility of parents in the religious upbringing of children is paramount and irreplaceable.
For children at St Bede’s school, some of the catechesis for the sacrament will take place during school RE classes. They will also be required to attend the catechetical sessions that take place in the parish. These are held on Monday evenings between 6.00 and 7.00 in St Bede’s School, beginning on 26th January. The full list of dates will be given to you on your child’s enrolment.
I very much hope that you will decide to enrol your child in the Confirmation programme. If you would like to do so, then please would you complete the enclosed form and return it to me by Friday 23rd January. There will be a meeting for parents and children beginning with Mass at 6.30pm on Tuesday 13th January at Mount Carmel Church. At this meeting you will be given further details about the programme and have the opportunity to ask any questions. The children who enrol on the course will make their commitment at either the 5.00pm parish Mass on Saturday 24th January or the 11.00am parish Mass on Sunday 25th January. If you have any queries in the meantime please feel free to contact me.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Fr Anthony Rohan Parish Priest

Tim Bowler Night Runner Zinny's life is falling apart. Shadowy figures are following him. His parents are keeping
secrets but he can't figure out why. Then his mum ends up in hospital, his dad disappears,
and Zinny has to do whatever he can to save his family. Even if it means helping the very
men he's been running from ...
As the clock ticks, Zinny knows it's only a matter of time before someone ends up dead -
and it could be him.
Lucy Christopher The Killing Woods Emily’s dad is accused of murdering a teenage girl. Emily is sure he is innocent, but what
happened that night in the woods behind their house where she used to play as a child?
Determined to find out, she seeks out Damon Hillary, the enigmatic boyfriend of the
murdered girl. He also knows these woods. Maybe they could help each other. But he’s
got secrets of his own about games that are played in the dark.
A new psychological thriller from the award-winning and bestselling author of STOLEN
and FLYAWAY.
James Dawson Say Her Name Roberta 'Bobbie' Rowe is not the kind of person who believes in ghosts. A Halloween dare
at her ridiculously spooky boarding school is no big deal, especially when her best friend
Naya and cute local boy Caine agree to join in too. They are ordered to summon the
legendary ghost of 'Bloody Mary': say her name five times in front of a candlelit mirror, and
she shall appear... But, surprise surprise, nothing happens. Or does it?
Next morning, Bobbie finds a message on her bathroom mirror... five days... but what does
it mean? And who left it there? Things get increasingly weird and more terrifying for
Bobbie and Naya, until it becomes all too clear that Bloody Mary was indeed called from
the afterlife that night, and she is definitely not a friendly ghost. Bobbie, Naya and Caine
are now in a race against time before their five days are up and Mary comes for them, as
she has come for countless others before... A truly spine-chilling yet witty horror from
shortlisted 'Queen of Teen' author James Dawson.
Cover Author Title Synopsis
Tim Hall Shadow of the Wolf A world of gods and monsters. An elemental power, rising. This is Robin Hood, reborn, as
he has never been seen before…
Robin Loxley is seven years old when his parents disappear without trace. Years later the
great love of his life, Marian, is also taken from him. Driven by these mysteries, and this
anguish, Robin follows a darkening path into the ancient heart of Sherwood Forest. What
he encounters there will leave him transformed, and will alter forever the legend of Robin
Hood.
Tom Hoyle Thirteen Born at midnight in London, on the stroke of the new millennium, Adam is the target of a
cult that believes boys born on this date must die before the end of their thirteenth year.
Twelve boys have been killed so far. Coron, the crazy cult leader, will stop at nothing to
bring in his new kingdom. And now he is planning a bombing spectacular across London to
celebrate the sacrifice of his final victim: Adam.
Kim Slater Smart I found Jean’s friend dead in the river. His name was Colin Kirk. He was a homeless man, but he
still wanted to live.
There’s been a murder, but the police don’t care. It was only a homeless old man after all.
Kieran cares. He’s made a promise, and when you say something out loud, that means
you’re going to do it, for real. He’s going to find out what really happened. To Colin. And
to his grandma, who just stopped coming round one day. It’s a good job Kieran’s a master
of observation, and knows all the detective tricks of the trade.
But being a detective is difficult when you’re Kieran Woods. When you’re amazing at
drawing but terrible at fitting in. And when there are dangerous secrets everywhere, not
just outside, but under your own roof.
